On June 25 and 26, 1876, the Battle of Little Big Horn took place along the Little Big Horn River in Montana Territory. Known to the Plains Indians as the Battle of the Greasy Grass, it is widely remembered as Custer's Last Stand. The 7th Cavalry Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer faced the combined forces of several tribes including Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho. The only survivor of regiment on Last Stand Hill was Captain Keogh's horse Commanche, but 7th Cavalry troops in other portions of the battlefield did survive.
We talked with Historian Sarah Keyes about her new book, "American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail." We delve into the history of the Overland Trail, discussing the 6,600 migrants who perished along the treacherous journey westward, their final resting places often marking the landscape of Indigenous land. Keyes' explains how the graves of these migrants emerge not just as tragic markers of a treacherous journey but as pivotal sites that shaped the course of U.S. expansion into the West. With death at the forefront, the Overland Trail transforms from a tale of triumph to one of profound struggle, where Indigenous resilience and resistance intersect with white settlers' ambitions. Keyes' reimagining of this historic touchstone challenges conventional narratives, revealing a complex history of migration, dispossession, and the indelible imprint of death on the American landscape. We highlight two artifacts from the Museum of the Rockies collection including a spur, that possible belonged to trailblazer, John Bozeman and a Log Cabin design quilt made before the Civil War and transported west to Montana Territory by the Lucy Nave Tinsley family. Snow is a common occurrence in North Dakota, but not in June! That's what the Seventh Cavalry endured for two cold, wet days, stuck in camp in the Badlands, while marching west from Fort Abraham Lincoln. The expedition was headed into Montana Territory, where Plains Indians would later defeat Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his men at the Battle of Greasy Grass, or Little Bighorn.

Join us as we talk with Dr. Laura Arata about her book, Race and the Wild West: Sarah Bickford, The Montana Vigilantes, and the Tourism of Decline, 1870-1930. We discuss the life of Sarah Bickford, a black woman who grew up enslaved in Tennessee and then traveled to Montana Territory after she was emancipated. Sarah settled in the gold rush town of Virginia City where she lived out the rest of her life. She married twice, both times to white men. When her second husband died, she inherited his shares of the Virginia City Water Company and eventually acquired sole ownership, which she ran until her death in 1931. In addition to Sarah, we discuss Mattie Castner and Mary Fields, two black women who grew up enslaved but moved to Montana in the late 19th century and made lives for themselves in Montana.
In this episode we finally cover Custer's Last Stand in the Montana Territory on June 25 1876.
There are many legendary figures who emerged from the American Wild West. In this all new episode we explore the life of the lesser known, though no less incredible, Mary Fields, who has come to be known as Stagecoach Mary. Born enslaved, Mary was emancipated around the age of 33 after the American Civil War. Eventually she moved west to the Montana Territory. There she worked alongside the Ursuline nuns and Jesuits at St. Peter's mission until she was dismissed for an incident involving drawn firearms. Mary was a mold breaker and was unafraid to push against the expectations of others. She drank, smoke cigars, carried firearms, and sometimes wore men's clothing. She was also someone of great generosity and won the admiration of many people in Cascade, Montana. She was an unstoppable force, and at the age of 63, became history's first African American Star Route Carrier for the US Postal Service. This was a dangerous job, but despite the threat of predators, bandits, rugged terrain, and harsh winters, Mary and her mule Moses never missed a day in her eight year tenure as a Star Route Carrier. If the whether became impassable for her stagecoach, Mary would deliver the mail by snowshoe, carrying the sacks over her shoulders. Mary became a legend in her own time as stories of this gun carrying, cigar smoking, hard liquor drinking woman who seemed to break down every barrier thrown her way, earned Mary her place in history. Come hear how the life of Mary Fields become the legend of Stagecoach Mary.

Levi Boone Helm. The Kentucky Cannibal. Born in 1828 in Kentucky, and hanged in Montana Territory in 1864, this guy was mayhem on legs. He spent nearly his entire adult life fighting, robbing, killing, and running from the law. He killed at least 18 men in various shootouts and other violent encounters. He ended up stuck way out in the woods on numerous occasions with no option for food other than to eat another grown man, which he did if he got hungry enough. He spent his final days riding with The Innocents, an outlaw gang active in Bannack and Virginia City, Montana, before a massive vigilante mob brought them down. Lotta yip, yip, yaw in this one. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Terrence McCauley is an award-winning writer of Thrillers, Crime Fiction and Westerns. His first two Aaron Mackey westerns (WHERE THE BULLETS FLY and DARK TERRITORY), published by Pinnacle, were finalists for the Western Writers of America's Silver Spur Award. WHERE THE BULLETS FLY won the Western Fictioneers Award for Best Novel in 2018. The third and fourth books in the series, GET OUT OF TOWN and THE DARK SUNRISE, were published in 2020. ABOUT THE BOOK - THE DARK SUNRISE At long last, U.S. Marshal Aaron Mackey and Deputy Billy Sunday will see crime baron James Grant and his kill-crazy cronies stand trial for the mayhem and suffering they unleashed on the people of Dover Station. But as Montana Territory's statehood is approaching, murdering devils like Grant can no longer be tolerated in positions of political power. Or can they? Montana's capital of Helena follows its own set of laws—laws that not only set Grant free, but give peacekeeping authority to a sadistic murdering gunslinger like Colonel Warren Bell, Mackey's commanding officer during the war. The city's leaders prefer keeping killers like Grant and Bell under their thumbs. Mackey knows there's no controlling these bloodthirsty madmen. And if they think they're above the law, then Mackey and Billy will just have to appoint themselves judge, jury, and executioners . . .
Had an great conversation with Courtney Green, Founder of Montana Territory Hat Co., on the Podcast and was completely surprised by her amazing story... The American West has always held my heart. I am endlessly inspired by the elements of this wild landscape. To me Montana has always symbolized freedom, hope, resilience, and work ethic. It is a place that is at once wild, rugged and raw and yet utterly peaceful; rich in unrivaled beauty, history, art, and culture. I am constantly humbled by my surroundings and this place that I get to call home. When I started The Montana Territory Hat Company, I committed to an iconic product that represented a sense of place and time. Heritage Inspired. Of the West. I believe in product that feels like art. Classic designs, quality construction, thoughtful details, built with a sense of pride and purpose. Something Inspired by the past, to be lived in and loved today, and passed on to future generations. The Cowboy Hat is perhaps the most timeless and iconic symbol of the American West. I do not believe any other item has the potential to evoke the same sense of pride, purpose, and individual style. Some things do get even better with age. I build every hat by hand one step at a time in my studio in Bozeman, Montana escaping occasionally with my two little kids to our family ranch to ride horses and help work cattle under the expanse of the Bridger Mountain Range and the big Montana sky. Best Old Time Radio Podcast with Bob Bro Thursday, December 3, 2020 - OTR Westerns Fort Laramie - "Gold" It has been said that greed for gold is a fat demon with a small mouth -- whatever you feed it is never enough. A wagon train coming through Fort Laramie is bound for he Oregon Trail. Of course there is also the nearby Bozeman Trail which travels further north through the Montana Territory. By treaty, wagon trains are prohibited on the Bozeman Trail since it cuts through the Powder River Basin -- the last and best hunting grounds of the Norther Plains Indians. But gold was recently discovered in Montana territory; gold that can make men rich. And some pioneers wanted their share, Indians be damned. 1877 Oglala Sioux chief Crazy Horse is fatally bayoneted by a U.S. soldier after resisting confinement in a guardhouse at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. A year earlier, Crazy Horse was among the Sioux leaders who defeated George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana Territory. The battle, in which 265 members of the Seventh Cavalry, including Custer, were killed, was the worst defeat of the U.S. Army in its long history of warfare with the Native Americans. After the victory at Little Bighorn, U.S. Army forces led by Colonel Nelson Miles pursued Crazy Horse and his followers. His tribe suffered from cold and starvation, and on May 6, 1877, Crazy Horse surrendered to General George Crook at the Red Cloud Indian Agency in Nebraska. He was sent to Fort Robinson, where he was killed in a scuffle with soldiers who were trying to imprison him in a cell. 1972 A group of Palestinian militants belonging to the Black September terrorist group stormed the apartment Israeli athletes were staying at the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany several days after the XX Olympic Summer Games had begun. Before she was able to fire off a shot, Secret Service agents tackled her and wrestled her to the ground. Fromme was a member of the Charles Manson cult "The Family." After Charles Manson was arrested in 1969, Fromme and other female members of the cult started an order of “nuns” within a new group called the International People's Court of Retribution. Fromme herself was still so enamored of Manson that she devised the plot to kill President Ford in order to win Manson's approval.

Gallatin History Museum director Bill Jones discusses the legendary Bozeman pioneer and entrepreneur who is credited with bringing the first Texas cattle to Montana Territory in 1866. The ambitious businessman invested in milling, ranching, banking, and real estate and, for his family home, built Bozeman’s first true mansion, an imposing 1888 Second Empire–style residence that sat for fifty-two years on Main Street.
By 1864, with a variety of strategic roads leading to and from the Gallatin Valley, the region served as the primary agricultural center of southwestern Montana. Montana Department of Transportation historian Jon Axline looks at several of these important roads leading into Montana Territory, including the Montana-Utah Road, the Mullan Road, early toll roads, and, of course, the Bozeman Trail.

Civil Rights and Conflict in the United States: Selected Speeches
Big Hole National Battlefield is a memorial to the people who fought and died here on August 9 and 10, 1877.In 1877, about 750 non-treaty Nez Perce fled Idaho in the face of demands from the US Army that all Nez Perce move onto a reservation a fraction from the size of their traditional homeland. The Army was enforcing a national policy of placing all American Indians on reservations to make way for the westward expansion of the young United States. In early August, the non-treaty Nez Perce camped for several days along the North Fork of the Big Hole River. They knew they had crossed into Montana Territory, and believed they were safe from further pursuit. Just before daybreak on August 9, 1877, military forces attacked them as they rested after six weeks of conflict and flight. Although the soldiers and civilian volunteers attacked the village while most of the Nez Perce slept, the warriors quickly mounted a resistance and drove the military men to retreat to a wooded hill nearby. The soldiers dug trenches for protection, but the Nez Perce warriors surrounded the fortified hill and held the soldiers there. Meanwhile, the older men, women and children in the camp buried the dead and fled again. The Battle of the Big Hole lasted less than 36 hours, yet casualties were high. Between 60 and 90 Nez Perce were killed, most in the initial attack on the sleeping camp, with countless wounded in the ensuing battle. Twenty-two soldiers, and 5 civilians were killed, and many more were severely wounded. This week's interview: Big Hole National BattlefieldWebsites:http://www.eTravelogue.com/http://www.nps.gov/bihoBe sure to stop by our site and suggest attractions that you think we should cover on the program!Listen to this issue
