It's Monday, October 7th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Muslim employer forces 17-year-old Christian boy to convert The Muslim employers of a 17-year-old Christian who works at their gas company in Pakistan have forcibly converted him to Islam and are holding him in illegal custody, reports MorningStarNews.org. Samina Javed, a brick kiln worker in the Sheikhupura District (in Punjab Province) said her son, Samsoon Javed, began working at a Liquified Petroleum Gas outlet owned by Usman Manzoor in November. Samsoon's father, Falamoon Masih, died in 2018 due to illness, and he is one of four children Javed had from that marriage. She is now married to her second husband with whom she had another son. In July, after he began working at the gas outlet, his family began noticing a change in his behavior. The mother explained, “He began avoiding us and his siblings and didn't speak much when he was at home. We came to know about Samsoon's conversion [to Islam] in September, when he didn't come home from work.” Javed, a member of a local Brethren church, said that they were able to see Samsoon after a few days when his Muslim employer was not present at the shop. She explained, “Samsoon kept silent and avoided eye contact when we asked him about his conversion. It was quite clear that he was scared and under pressure. He told us to leave, saying [his boss] would be angry if he saw us there.” They later learned from contacts that the Manzoor brothers had been taking their son to an Islamic spiritual guide (Pir), where he was pressured to abandon his Christian faith. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” Please pray that Samina Javed would be able to regain custody of her 17-year-old son Samsoon in Pakistan to enable him the freedom to follow Christ. Biden unsure which storm people have just endured Last Wednesday, President Joe Biden took an aerial tour of the damage from Hurricane Helene with the North Carolina Governor and Asheville Mayor. Flying in his helicopter, known as Marine One, he viewed the visible destruction including buildings that had been flattened, trees knocked down, and houses submerged under water. The next evening, a reporter asked Biden about the impact of Hurricane Helene. Let me play the audio. Because the sound of the plane is so loud in the background, I will repeat what was said. REPORTER: “What do the states in the storm zones need, Mr. President?” PRESIDENT BIDEN: “What?” REPORTER: “What do the states in the storm zone -- what do they need after what you saw today?” BIDEN: “Oh, in the storm zone.” REPORTER: “Yes sir.” BIDEN: “I didn't know which storm you were talking about. They've got everything they need. And they're very happy across the board.” Truth be told, the people hit by Hurricane Helene, especially those in North Carolina, are not very happy across the board. Clearly, Biden is out of touch with reality. DeSantis sent Florida Guard to North Carolina, first help they received Appearing on Fox News with Harris Faulkner, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis explained that after the Florida Guard had completed their Hurricane Helene rescues in Florida, he authorized the military personnel to rescue North Carolinians. DeSANTIS: “I authorized air assets, National Guard, state guard, Highway Patrol, to go into western North Carolina. So, it created this odd circumstance where the first people that they come in contact with is some state guard unit from Florida and not any of the federal assets. I don't think the federal assets were marshaled very quickly at all. “But the lesson that I think people should take from this is one we learned in Florida long ago. We don't rely on FEMA – [Federal Emergency Management Association] -- to do any of that type of activity. We rely on FEMA to basically be a bank account. There's federal programs in place. We get our people qualified for individual assistance, reimbursement for some of the debris, but we take the matters into our own hands for the preparation and the rescue and response. I just think it's sad.” In addition, The Wall Street Journal reports that homeowners are rushing to file insurance claims after Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction across six states. Many of them will likely be left empty-handed. In recent years, property insurers have hollowed out coverage and sharply increased rates to make up for steep underwriting losses driven by natural disasters. Melania Trump champions abortion in new memoir And finally, last Thursday, Donald Trump said he gave his blessing for his wife Melania Trump to endorse a “fundamental right” to abortion in her upcoming memoir, at a time when relations are already strained between the GOP ticket and the party's pro-life base, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Earlier this week, an advance excerpt of the former First Lady's book was published, in which she declares that a “woman's fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes. Restricting a woman's right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body.” Sadly, Melania disregards the humanity of the children in the womb created by God. In Jeremiah 1:5, God said, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Fox News asked Trump for his reaction. FOX NEWS: “What's your reaction to Melania's memoir championing abortion rights and reproductive freedom?” TRUMP: “We spoke about it and I said you have to write what you believe. I'm not going to tell you what to do. You have to write what you believe. “She's very beloved. People love our former First Lady, I can tell you that. But I said you have to stick with your heart. I've said that to everybody. You have to go with your heart. “There are some people that are very, very far right in the issue, meaning without exceptions. And then there are other people that view it a little bit differently than that.” Mrs. Trump's pro-abortion declaration comes the same week her husband clarified he “would not support a federal abortion ban, under any circumstances, and would, in fact, veto it.” Trump tweeted those outrageous comments while J.D. Vance, his VP pick, was debating Tim Walz in New York last Tuesday. Trump now opposes further federal action on abortion, supports letting the Abortion Kill Pill to be distributed by mail, and has criticized pro-life states for overly “harsh” abortion bans. The former president has taken credit for making the GOP “less radical” on abortion, including by having the national Republican Party platform rewritten to reflect his more liberal position. Politico reported that multiple prominent pro-life figures were frank in their disapproval. Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said, “It is not a pro-life position, it's not an acceptable position, and it does not provide the contrast on this issue to the degree that we have had in the past between him and Kamala Harris. What President Trump is doing is suppressing his own support.” Students for Life of America chief policy strategist Kristi Hamrick said, “President Trump keeps saying that he wants to be out of the federal business of abortion. So, number one, stop funding it.” And Live Action founder and leader Lila Rose lamented, “Unfortunately, it seems like Trump doesn't care about the pro-life base anymore. He came out recently and said that he supported access to these deadly abortion drugs, and that is horrific. When Trump is publicly compromising, it's deeply discouraging to pro-life and pro-family voters, and I think that he's putting his own election in jeopardy. Quite frankly, this is a losing strategy.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, October 7th, in the year of our Lord 2024. In a record-breaking week, Kamala Harris has united the Democratic party behind her, with significant momentum and grassroots support. Former Senator Claire McCaskill and former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri liken it to the energy felt in the Obama campaign, especially as online support grows organically among younger voters. They also take a beat to reflect on President Biden's heartfelt address to the nation Wednesday night, and the legacy he leaves after decades of public service. Then, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stops by, to chat veepstakes, explain the Democratic Convention rules, and highlight some important governors' races to watch in November. And lastly, Claire and Jen dispel the myth of the vice president as a ‘DEI' candidate with a reality check: JD Vance is the candidate who's been handed everything he has.Further reading: As promised, here is Governor Tim Walz' winning hotdish recipe from the Minnesota Congressional Delegation's Hotdish Off: Turkey Trot Tater Tot Hotdish.

In this pilot episode of Best Part of the Book, a personal nod is given to the small rural town of Ashe County where McFarland has called home since it was founded in 1979. Host Mark Perzel talks with Janet Pittard, author of A Hospital for Ashe County: Four Generations of Appalachian Community Health Care. Janet shares favorite stories she uncovered in the extensive research and over 100 interviews she performed in the writing of the book. You don’t have to be from Ashe County, North Carolina to appreciate these hometown stories surrounding a small hospital in a rural Appalachian community. BOOK DESCRIPTION: When Ashe County Memorial Hospital opened in November 1941, it was the realization of a dream for the poor, sparsely populated county in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina. Building a hospital is a major undertaking for any community at any time. Accomplishing this in the waning days of the Great Depression and on the brink of World War II, while scant local resources were taxed by catastrophic floods and severe snows, was a remarkable feat of community organization. This is the story of the generations of supporters, doctors, nurses, emergency personnel and others whose lives are interwoven with regional health care and the planning, building and operation of (the “new”) Ashe Memorial Hospital. This legacy, brought to life through 114 photographs and personal interviews with 97 individuals, traces the development of health care in a remote Appalachian community, from the days of folk remedies and midwives, to horseback doctors and early infirmaries, to the technological advances and outreach efforts of today’s Ashe Memorial Hospital. Her love of stories came from her father, who entertained his little girl with stories he thought up while driving the state’s winding mountain roads for his job. That is where Janet’s love of western North Carolina originated. Now she combines her love of writing with her love of her mountain home in West Jefferson, generating stories and books set in the High Country. Janet began her career as a freelance writer after retiring from the North Carolina Governor’s Office with 30 years of service. She wrote over 100 stories for Our State Magazine from 2003 to 2009 and also wrote for several projects with UNC-TV’s Our State program. Later she contributed stories to two published anthologies related to Ashe County and wrote for an online newspaper called Ashe County Line. Janet is a regular participant in Wordkeepers, a local writing group. Scott Presler of Early Vote Action joins Dawn to expand on the game plan the GOP needs to follow with early and mail in voting. Read more about Early Vote Action below. Early Vote Action PA (“EVA”) was created to achieve a strict purpose — organize & mobilize Republicans to vote early, so that by the time Election Day rolls around, the Republican victory is already baked in. At EVA, we're intent on marshaling the time, labor, and resources of conservatives around the country to achieve this goal in 2024, with a specific focus on the key swing states of Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The foremost goal for Republicans in 2024 is to take back the White House, and the path to 270 Electoral College votes runs through these five key swing states. If we win these swing states, Republicans will retake the Senate, strengthen our hold on the House, retake the North Carolina Governor's Mansion, retake the Nevada Legislature, strengthen our holds on the other respective states' legislatures, and see victories in down-ballot races at the county and local levels. It will be efficient, precise trickle-down organizing & mobilizing. Importantly, also, at EVA we're working to ensure that Republicans from every state are operating not merely as 50 disjointed operations, but rather as one team of concerned American conservatives fighting to win the necessary electoral fights to retake our country. Because if we retake these five key states, we can continue our movement's march into every state across the country with powerful momentum, until every state on the map is ruby Republican red! Whether you're in Tulsa or Jersey City, Bar Harbor or Anchorage, at EVA we are ready to connect with you to organize teams of conservative Americans, build phone banks and letter writing centers, provide the requisite data to engage with the voters we need to get to the polls, and get them to the polls early. We're ready to win, and we're intent on ensuring that our path to victory begins on the day ballots go out. To reach this goal, we need you on our team, because when we organize and mobilize we win. Tune in 10 AM - 12 PM EST weekdays on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT; or on the Audacy app!

NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ROY COOPER THINKS ITS A STATE OF AN EMERGENCY FOR KIDS TO HAVE SCHOOL CHOICEThis damn fool is making North Carolina a Laughing Stock!! What a mess, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declares 'state of emergency' over school choice billRepublican state lawmakers have planned to use their veto-proof majority to pass education reformBy Lindsay Kornick | Fox NewsGov. Roy Cooper declares state of emergency over upcoming education reformNorth Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency on Monday ahead of the Republican state legislature planning to pass school choice legislation.Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a "state of emergency" on Monday in an attempt to stop a school choice bill from passing the state legislature.Cooper released a video announcement where he declared a state of emergency, arguing that the state of public education is "no less important" than other emergencies."It's time to declare a State of Emergency for public education in North Carolina. There's no Executive Order like with a hurricane or the pandemic, but it's no less important," Cooper stated. He continued, "It's clear that the Republican legislature is aiming to choke the life out of public education. I'm declaring this state of emergency because you need to know what's happening. If you care about public schools in North Carolina, it's time to take immediate action and tell them to stop the damage that will set back our schools for a generation."Cooper's announcement drew intense backlash on Twitter as an overreach of government power. The Blaze columnist Auron MacIntyre wrote, "Executive governing in the permanent state of exception to save democracy.""Neutering the abuse of emergency power by the executive branch should be priority number 1 for every state," Conservative account "PoliMath" tweeted.School choice advocate Corey DeAngelis wrote, "they're losing control over the minds of other people's children. good. cry harder, @RoyCooperNC.""What a hypocrite. Public schools aren't good enough for his kids, but they are for yours," Independent Women's Forum senior policy analyst Kelsey Bolar blasted.Purple Strategies partner Rory Cooper commented, "If I *were* the Governor of NC, I would've been declaring a state of emergency when the state was in the bottom third of states reopening schools and depriving children of the education they needed. Not once parents got involved and demanded something better for their kids.""A ‘state of emergency' over a bill passed by the legislature. Very serious," Americans for Prosperity vice president Casey Mattox joked. In April, Republican lawmakers in North Carolina announced efforts to move forward with education reform bills that promote school choice. One measure includes a bill that would provide equal funding to charter school students along those who attend public school. Critics, such as Cooper, claimed that the bill mostly serves to cut funding for public schools."Put together, these ideas spell disaster that requires emergency action. The North Carolina I know was built on support for public schools, and we can't let the legislature tear them down. I'm fighting back, and I need you to do it too. Public schools can survive this legislative session if we can limit the damage, but we all need to pull together to do it," Cooper said. The measures by state Republicans followed the announcement by State Rep. Tricia Cotham that she would be defecting from the Democratic Party to join the GOP. Her decision, she stated at the time, came from her support for school choice."On issues like school choice, like charters, we have to evolve," Cotham said. "One-size-fits-all in education is wrong for children … [Democrats] didn't really want to talk about children. They had talking points from adults and adult organizations."Cooper has been criticized for opposing private school vouchers while sending his daughter to a private school in Raleigh. He has also attempted to end the state's Opportunity Scholarship Program which provides vouchers to lower and middle-income students.=====================LIFE, LIBERTY, JUSTICE FOR ALLPROTECT OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS#GoRight For Peter Boykinhttps://PeterBoykin.comPeter Boykin For NC LT GOVERNOR 2024#ncgov #ncltgov #ncltgovernor #NCGOP #NCpolitics #ncpol #PeterBoykin #GoRight #Trump #gop #Election2024 #ElectionsMatter

Since 1986, the North Carolina Victim Assistance Network has supported people in their darkest hour…people who are the family members of murder victims. They offer emotional support, support in the courtroom, and financial support. Their state funding has been virtually eliminated. It's a non-profit organization that offers services free to their clients. They are hoping the Governor's Crime Commission will reconsider funding them. Below is information provided by the NC Department of Public Safety regarding VOCA (Victims of Crime Act) funding: VOCA BACKGROUNDER AND TRENDLINES Victim Assistance grant funds are made up of federal dollars that in North Carolina are distributed by the Governor's Crime Commission. These funds – the GCC's largest source of federal funding – have fallen by 57% over the last five years and are in jeopardy of falling further. In 2018, the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission received $103 million to support victims of crime. In 2022, the GCC received only $44.7 million. Of that money, 30% is federally mandated to be distributed to organizations supporting victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Another mandatory funding stream earmarks at least 10% for underserved populations including family members of victims of homicide, as well as victims of human trafficking and other crimes. In 2022, GCC surpassed this mandatory minimum and allocated almost 30% of funding to projects that support underserved populations. The remaining funds are allocated using priorities set by the Commission during the summer months. Some of the funding priorities this year are community violence intervention, legal services and hospital-based services. The reduction in federal VOCA funding has increased competition among worthy applicants serving victims of crime in North Carolina and throughout the country. VOCA Victim Assistance grants come from the U.S. Crime Victims Fund, which is made up of deposits of federal criminal fines, fees, and penalties. Deposits to the CVF have been decreasing since 2017 due in part to decreased federal prosecutions, and this has in turn helped drive down the amount of money distributed to the states. Statement from Caroline Farmer, Executive Director of the Governor's Crime Commission, on administration of VOCA funding. The Governor's Crime Commission understands the impact VOCA-funded organizations have on our communities. We support NCVAN and their work. The federal funding that NCVAN and other organizations previously relied upon has been cut dramatically. This is a pivotal moment for the VOCA federal fund, and we are taking the following steps to ensure that victims continue to receive support in their recovery: We require VOCA applicants to write to their regional U.S. Attorneys' Office, sharing the ways that their work supports victims of federal crime in our state. The U.S. Attorneys' prosecutions help fund these groups. We are working closely with groups such as NCVAN that are looking for new sources of funding following the loss of some or all of their VOCA funding. Our 2023 Request for Proposal for VOCA funding is currently open. We encourage organizations to review the criteria and submit their applications by the Jan. 31 deadline.

Mark Peiser: The Moving Target of Perfection Since 1967 when Mark Peiser became involved with the Studio Glass Movement, he has been recognized for his uniquely individualized approaches and accomplishments in glass. Continual investigation of the expressive implications of glass properties and processes has led to his distinctive bodies of work. Recently Peiser published the book, Thirty-Eight Pieces of Glass – with Related Thoughts, pairing his glass with brief writings of resonance. To quote from the preface: “Since I began with glass 50 years ago, I've received countless questions asking, basically, what's it about? In that discussion I've tried to answer honestly and completely but I've always felt to have fallen short – short of the words and short of the voice that would say them. When I started to assemble this book, I began feeling much more truthful and satisfying answers to that question. I hope you will, too. That these selections sorted out into something of an abridged life story was a bit of a surprise to me. It shouldn't have been. All along I've said my work has been about my feelings and experiences and, over many years, what else is a life?” Peiser, an internationally known glass artist, was born in Chicago in 1938. After studying electrical engineering at Purdue University (Lafayette, Indiana, 1955-1957), he received a Bachelor of Science in Design from Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, Illinois, 1961). Peiser studied piano and composition at DePaul University School of Music (Chicago, Illinois, 1965-1967) before attending Penland School of Crafts (Penland, North Carolina) in 1967. After five weeks of glass classes, he became the first resident craftsman in glass at the school. Peiser is a founder of the Glass Art Society, of which he is now an honorary member, and a leading presence in the Studio Glass Movement. Inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Craft Council in 1988, Peiser received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass in 2004, the North Carolina Governor's Award in 2009, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Glass Art Society in 2010 and the North Carolina Living Treasure Award in 2011, among others. He has exhibited worldwide and is in many public and private collections including the Asheville Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, the Glassmuseum Ebeltoft, the Lucerne Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, The Museum of Art and Design, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, among others. By challenging established formulas and techniques throughout his career, Peiser has created and combined new and unusual colors in his glass sculptures. This approach to glass is radical as he has literally invented new glasses in order to pursue an idea through to creation. In 2009, a special glass formulation was created by melting opal glasses for his Palomar series of sculptures that pay homage to Corning Glass Works' famous 200-inch Disk, the telescope mirror cast in 1934 for the Mt. Palomar Observatory in California. Currently, Peiser is working on the Marko Blanko Project to develop a specialty glass for filigrana. Peiser's work highlights include: EARLY WORKS 1967 – 1977 Develops blowing skills, designs and builds various furnaces and equipment, develops formulations for crystal, various opal and luster glasses. Produces iridescent miniatures, gather pots, flower forms, spaghetti bowls, copper core vessels, opaque geometric and image vessels. PAPERWEIGHT VASES (PWV) 1975 – 1981 Introduces and develops torch working techniques for furnace blown work allowing more detailed imagery and perspective. Produces Paperweight Vases portraying natural subjects and landscapes, urban views and abstract imagery related to the vessel form. INNERSPACE (IS) 1983 – 1994 Develops graphite molding process and casting glasses. Makes compound cast glass pieces that compose the internal volume of solid transparent forms. Produces Innerspace series including Ascensions, Hands, Light Beams, Moons, Mountain Skyscapes, Muses, Planets and Polychrome Progressions. FORMS OF CONSCIOUSNESS (FOC) 1994 – 2004 Develops bottom pour casting furnace, casting and mold techniques, and glass formulae allowing larger scale work representing psychological conditions. CONTRITION SECOND STUDY (CSS) 2000 – 2004 Produces a limited edition of 50 as a learning experience to formulate and develop casting process for controlled translucency in sculptural glass. COLDSTREAM CASTING (CSC) 2001 – 2007 A creative use of my bottom pour furnace. My most fun in a glass shop since 1969. View videos of the Coldstream Casting process on You Tube by searching Mark Peiser. PALOMAR 2008 – 2012 Develops vermiculite molding process. Produces Palomar series as a tribute to the accomplishment of the Palomar Mirror in 1934. For more about the Palomar series and the transition to the Passage and Etudes Tableau, search You Tube for Mark Peiser's Corning Museum of Glass talk. PASSAGES AND ETUDES TABLEAU 2012 – PRESENT Refines formulation and heat treatment of light scattering glasses. Produces work whose subject is light. Now, more than a half century later, Peiser's name is synonymous with invention and precision. He conveyed to ToYG podcast: “Most of my earliest memories are of making things. I seem to have a knack for seeing how things work, how things go together, and how to make it. If I have a gift, that's it. “When I was in design school, I became concerned with the essence of quality. Read some books and papers, sat through some lectures, and developed a somewhat subconscious but deep commitment for my life's efforts. Later working in industry, design and advertising it was difficult to impossible to implement quality. At my level it was irrelevant and deeply unsatisfying. When I happened into Penland and the beginning of the Studio Glass Movement, the control offered by the notion of a one-man glass studio seemed an avenue that could lead to quality. I've done my best to hold to that path throughout my career. All in all, I've been successfully self- employed for 57 years. As we all hope, with the rest of life, I did the best I could at the time. But unlike the rest of life, I could disappear a bad piece like it never happened. “Being an artist is not just another job. It's a commitment.”

May 14, 2021 I don't know if I should travel to South Carolina to buy fireworks or step back six more feet. A huge milestone was conquered yesterday afternoon. After sixty plus weeks of wearing a diaper over our faceS the CDC reached that point in Covid 19 recovery where it's OK to walk into a building without wearing that strip of cloth. But! But! You have to be fully vaccinated. I burst out in huge laughter. Because I know how many people I work with on the frontline who refuse to get the shot. They're on the frontline and still feel like it's a conspiracy. To pour even more fuel onto this fire is how fast the North Carolina Governor jumped in and said it wouldn't be happening in his state. It's like being a teenager all over again. You've got your first car. The freedom is all yours. Driving wherever and whenever you want. Then your parents say, “Be home by nine or those keys belong to me.” My father was sick with his strict walk and way. He only allowed us five minutes to talk on the phone. As teens with budding hearts of love how can you get anything done inside five minutes? His command taught how to lie. To make up excuses. To create fake news. Five minutes? What his discipline did during my teen years trained me to be more giving and compassionate toward today's young adults. His dictatorship at 4172 Ryan opened my heart to give people the opportunity to succeed until the moment they disrespect the gift. The agreement. The collaboration. Equal love. Equal respect. Until the agreement is broken. I get it! Humans have this drive to not want to follow any rules. Many of us don't like confrontation either. When things aren't moving the way you intend it generates a ton of negative. Oh baby! Feel that fire! Whew! You've got some good negative! Sadly a lot of that negative is turning into bad decisions which leads to improper behavior. The CDC, President Joe Biden and science have cleared the way for the masks to taken off while in a building. The Governor of North Carolina doesn't agree. Can I get his phone number? I just wanna call him up when the maskless masses grow in large numbers. Call him up to let him know that being a political father during the pandemic means we ain't coming home at 9pm. He can try and take the car keys but the people know he may have words but he isn't gonna be heard. I get it! How do you prove you are fully vaccinated? I get it! Only 37% have been fully vaccinated! At any given moment we could be the global hot spot. I get it. My Dad told my teenage self, “I can't stop you from getting an STD. If you get it. It wasn't because I didn't tell you how to protect yourself. Make your own choices and please God in Heaven please locate the right decision.”

It's never made sense to force people to wear a mask outside. Good ventilation has always been an ignored key in reducing coronavirus transmission. But after a year of mandating it, the North Carolina Governor says we are free to be maskless outside. (Gee! Thanks!) Also, he expects to lift all other restrictions on capacity, distancing, and gatherings on June 1.... but NOT the mask mandate for INDOORS. If we want that order lifted, he demands we get 2/3rds of adults vaccinated with at least one dose. 'Herd immunity' is the phrase not to be uttered in a year of COVID briefings held by the North Carolina Governor. But that's what we're aiming for. So, what percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated or have recovered in order to achieve herd immunity? The Governor won't say... except that he wants everyone to get vaccinated. 93: Leadership Lessons from The Duke Endowment (Rhett Mabry) SUMMARYIt’s hard not to be impressed by an organization that has contributed over $4 billion in grants to nonprofit organizations since its inception, but that’s exactly The Duke Endowment has done, making it one of the largest 501(c)(3) private foundations in the United States. Equally impressive as the Endowment’s impact on its four program priorities (higher education, health care, rural church and child care) is the thoughtful leadership that President Rhett Mabry and his team bring to the philanthropic sector. As the guest on episode #93 of the Path Podcast, Rhett not only shares a wealth of knowledge from his three decades of experience in the charitable sector, but also specific advice for current and aspiring leaders in the nonprofit community. What are funders like the Endowment looking for in you as a nonprofit leader? What about your board? What do they want to see in your strategic plan and in your methods of evaluation? Lots of fascinating insight, and a unique opportunity to learn the answer to the question on your mind: “I wonder what the funder thinks about my nonprofit?”ABOUT RHETTA native of Greensboro, NC, Mabry joined the Endowment in 1992 as Associate Director of Health Care. He became Director of Child Care in 1998, was named Vice President of the Endowment in 2009, and became President in 2016. Mabry holds a Master of Health Administration from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill. Before joining the Endowment, he was a manager at Ernst & Young and HCA West Paces Ferry Hospital. He has served on the North Carolina Governor’s Early Childhood Advisory Council and the board of the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research. He is a past board chair of the Southeastern Council of Foundations, and serves as an Observer to the Duke University Board of Trustees. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper says we're not wearing masks enough, and we're not social-distancing enough, and we're not washing our hands enough. So, if we don't comply with his new, stricter Executive Order... he'll look to lock the state down again. He's ordering authorities to punish individuals along with business owners who don't comply with his edict. That’s the same one-day total from November 20, tying the one-day record. The seven-day average for new positive tests has risen to 7.4 percent statewide, up from 7.2 percent yesterday. In the Blue Ridge Health District, there are 37 new cases, bringing the seven-day average for new daily cases to 38. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper yesterday announced new mask requirements due to rising cases in that state. “We’ve passed the grim benchmark of losing more than 5,000 North Carolineans to COVID-19,” Cooper said. “We hold each of them in our memories and they will not be forgotten. This Thanksgiving week, our state and the country are reporting record high case numbers and hospitalizations.”The new mask requirement goes into effect at 5 p.m. tomorrow in North Carolina. People must wear masks in all indoor settings. Previously the requirement only applied to businesses. “I have a stark warning for North Carolineans today,” Cooper said. “We are in danger. This is a pivotal moment in our fight against the coronavirus. Our actions now will determine the fate of many.” Hat tip to the newsletter Raleigh Convergence for the information. Jennifer Koch is with the firm Rhodeside & Harwell. “We in the first round, taking the survey for example, we got 1,100 responses to that,” Koch said. “We’ve seen about 100 responses so far to the survey.”However, Koch said this time around, participants are being asked to comment on draft materials. Feedback is being taken through December 2. (virtual meeting page)The steering committee that is reviewing the work met last night to review the high-level principles of the affordable housing plan, which includes an aspirational $10 million a year commitment in city funding for affordable housing projects. Sarah Kirk is with the firm HR&A, a subcontractor hired to produce the affordable housing plan.“There are three guiding principles that really underpin the whole plan and you will see those referred to throughout the draft plan,” Kirk said. “Those are racial equity, regional collaboration so collaboration completely particularly within the urban ring, but we’re talking about ways to collaborate with Albemarle County and with other regional jurisdictions, with UVA to jointly address affordable housing challenges and we talk about the need for a comprehensive approach. So we think about not only using land use or subsidies, but using both as well as tenants’ rights to the city can advance tenant’s rights.”On the notion of regional cooperation, the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission is already spearheading a regional affordable housing partnership and is administering the state’s COVID-related Rental and Mortgage Relief program. On March 10, UVA President Jim Ryan announced that up to 1,500 new units would be built on land controlled by UVA or its real estate foundation. (UVA Today article)Much of the conversation dealt with that recommendation of $10 million in dedicated annual funding. Phil Kash is with HR&A. “We think consistency is key here, having an expected level of impact,” Kash said. “One, so the city can build its systems and lay plans around us, but also so nonprofit partners, CRHA and the entire ecosystem of affordable housing can build and scale up to capacity to deploy this this money effectively.”In the past two months, Council has finalized two major agreements. That includes $3 million in funding for the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority for the Crescent Halls renovation and new units at South First Street, and about $5.5 million in funding for the first phase of the Friendship Court redevelopment being undertaken by Piedmont Housing Alliance. One councilor made this brief comment.“I’m just going to say that we have to be realistic,” said City Councilor Heather Hill. The city is currently facing the limits of its borrowing capacity. The panel also discussed the role of homeownership in the plan. We’ll have more from this meeting in a newsletter coming up later this week. *The Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority met last night for its monthly meeting. Executive Director John Sales said that for the first time in a long time, the vast majority of tenants no longer owe back rent thanks to an $80,000 payment from City Council out of its share of CARES Act funding. “That’s like probably the first time in 15 or 20 years that the account balances are at zero,” Sales said. The two who do have account balances are working out a payment plan with CRHA officials as part of a new eviction abatement program. Speaking of the two CRHA development projects, the city has issued building permits for both Crescent Halls and South First Street Phase One. Dave Norris is the CRHA’s redevelopment director and he said the next step is to complete financing. “We’ve cleared those hurdles which is huge and once we have closed on the projects, we’ll be able to get started on the construction,” Norris said. Norris said they are aiming for a mid-December date to close the financing deal, which includes the $3 million in city payments as well as low-income housing tax credits. (LIHTC). “That’s mostly due to a last minute delay caused by some bureaucratic issues with [the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development] but we’re working through them,” Norris said. Planning for a second phase of redevelopment at Phase 2 has been taking place all year and Norris said work has begun to get HUD-required paperwork done in advance. Negotiations between the general contractor are underway to ensure that at least some residents can be hired for the construction through a process known as Section 3. “Part of that conversation involves getting a little more specific on their Section 3 hiring commitments so that our Section 3 coordinator, Joy Johnson, has a clearer idea of roughly how many positions and what kind of skills and trades they are looking to hire from among the over 80 people she has in the pipeline for Section 3 employment,” Norris said.”The CRHA Board will next meet in late January. *Today in meetings, the Albemarle Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. and will hold a public hearing for on a special use permit for outdoors displays at a former restaurant in the Rio/29 intersection that is being converted into a car dealership. They’ll also take action on an altered form of the Breezy Hill subdivision in the Village of Rivanna. Southern Development has lowered the total number of units from 160 to 130 to try to assuage opposition from nearby residents.
