He studied at the cathedral school of Cologne and, while still a boy, was made provost of the churches of St. George and St. Severin at Cologne and of St. Mary's at Aachen, as it was a common abuse in the Church at the time to appoint the children of nobles to such positions. In 1199 he was elected provost of the cathedral at Cologne. He led a worldly life, and in the conflict between two Archbishops, Adolf and Bruno, hesided with his cousin Adolf, and waged war for him. Consequently, he was excommunicated by the pope along with his cousin. After his submission he was reinstated in 1208 and, to atone for his sin, joined the crusade against the Albigenses in 1212. On Feb. 29, 1216, the chapter of the cathedral elected him archbishop by a unanimous vote. The mendicant orders of the Franciscans and the Dominicans settled in his realm while he was Archbishop. He was well disposed towards the monasteries and insisted on strict religious observance in them. Ecclesiastical affairs were regulated in provincial synods. He was considered a friend of the clergy and a helper of the poor.Engelbert exerted a strong influence in the affairs of the empire. Emperor Frederick II, who had taken up his residence permanently in Sicily, gave Germany to his son, Henry VII, then still a minor, and in 1221 appointed Engelbert guardian of the king and administrator of the empire. When the young king reached the age of twelve he was crowned at Aachen by Engelbert, who loved him as his own son and honoured him as his sovereign. Engelbert watched over the young king's education and governed the empire in his name, careful to secure peace both within and without of the realm.Engelbert's devotion to duty, and his obedience to the pope and to the emperor, were eventually the cause of his ruin. Many of the nobility feared rather than loved him, and he was obliged to surround himself with bodyguards. The greatest danger came from his relatives. His cousin, count Frederick of Isenberg, the secular administrator for the nuns of Essen, had grievously oppressed that abbey. Honorius III and the emperor urged Engelbert to protect the nuns and their rights. Frederick wished to forestall the archbishop, and his wife incited him to murder. On November 7, 1225, as he was journeying from Soest to Schwelm to consecrate a church, Engelbert was attacked on a dark evening by Frederick and his associates, was wounded in the thigh, torn from his horse and killed. His body was covered with forty-seven wounds. It was placed on a dung-cart and brought to Cologne four days later. King Henry wept bitterly over the remains, put Frederick under the ban of the empire, and saw him broken on the wheel a year later at Cologne. Frederick died contrite, having acknowledged and confessed his guilt.Engelbert's body was placed in the old cathedral of Cologne on February 24, 1226, by Cardinal Conrad von Urach. The latter also declared him a martyr, though a formal canonization did not take place. In the martyrology, Engelbert is commemorated on November 7 as a martyr. A convent for nuns was erected at the place of his death. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

Societe’s (https://societebrewing.com) Doug Constantiner wants to make beer you can drink a lot of. Not excessively, of course, but consistently. “The holy grail of beer is not the beer that there’s a hundred bottles of, and every 25 bottles were aged in a different barrel,” he says. “The holy grail of beer is the beer that you can drink every single day. That you can buy on the shelf at the store. And you can have a couple of them every day and not get sick of it.” The terms “drinkable” and “balanced” get thrown around often in brewing parlance, but for Constantiner and the team, they’re core principles informing every style of beer they make—from IPA to wild ale to imperial stout. Societe has generally resisted the current trend of fruit and adjunct additions in everything, in favor of building a classic brewery brand respected for thorough execution and timelessness. Fellow brewers have noticed, and two GABF gold medals for their session IPA are validation for the quality in their approach. In this episode, Constantiner gets into the details of these aroma-forward West coast IPAs—pushing malt out of the way while timing additions for better balance of aroma and bitterness, strategically layering hops for complexity despite their “overspiced” nature, building body without malt flavors that get in the way of the hops, and considering unique flavor aspects to hops varieties that can set their beers apart. “For the hoppy stuff, what do we love about hoppy beers?” says Constantiner. “Well it’s the aroma. It’s not the bitterness, which is why we’ve never published our IBUs. The IBU race of the mid-oughts had nothing to do with hoppiness, it was just bitterness. So we just thought ‘let’s make these hoppy beers as hoppy as we can, and make them a delivery vehicle for that aroma, and get it into your face as quickly as possible, but it has to be balanced too.’” With their wild beers, Societe takes a similar approach to complexity and nuance, eschewing acidity for Brett-driven funk while carefully adjusting variables in their blending stock. “Creating acidity is easy. It’s ‘how do we create this incredibly complex layered beer?’ And I think that’s time, blending, and a lot of experimentation.” Constantiner discusses how they pitch cultures, growing each of their lactic acid bacteria and Brett strains separately then timing additions and amounts to achieve specific results. Cell counts, timing, and temperatures all have big effects on the finished beers, and Societe aims to control and understand the variables. At the end of the episode, Constantiner recounts the critical move they made earlier this year, moving from a model of taproom sales and distributed draught beer only to canning. “On Feb 2nd, 100% of our revenue came from on-premise sales,” says Constantiner. “That’s 8% from our tasting room, and 92% from wholesale. Feb 3rd, we started canning. By the time the shelter in place orders and restaurants were shut down in California, we were at about 84% on-premise.” A couple months later, the brewery’s production is at full speed, brewing at a higher volume than 2019, with new tanks on the way to support more production. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. It has been two months since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most of Tulsa. It’s been one year since historic flooding created an ongoing crisis in Tulsa. On this episode Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum discusses how last May’s flooding prepared him to lead the City’s response to the pandemic. He also reflects on the past two months and where he sees us headed. We kick off our conversation discussing G.T. Bynum the family man. Like many other Tulsans, he’s a partner and a parent, which meant home schooling and everything else that comes with quarantine. As you’ll hear, it’s created some wonderful lifelong memories for the Bynums. The Mayor also discusses the mental and physical health impact the early days of the pandemic had on him and what he found works for him to improve both aspects of his life.We did not discuss Tesla. Our 20-minute phone conversation on May 19 occurred hours before the golden driller became giant Elon Musk. Bynum has also previously stated he cannot comment on potential projects. Following my chat with the mayor, my second guest on this episode is Tulsa Chief of Police Wendell Franklin on policing during a pandemic. More on that later. Let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks. Wendell Franklin is a 23-year veteran of the Tulsa Police Department. He knows the department well. During his career he led all three TPD divisions. On Feb. 1 he became the new chief of police. He did not get much time to adjust to his new role before the pandemic forced a shutdown and changed the responsibilities of the department. Franklin discusses policing during a pandemic and how fortunate he and others were to have a Tulsa pandemic playbook sitting on the shelf. He also talks about what it’s been like to closely work with this episode’s first guest. There were 10 murders in April. That’s the most in that month dating back to 1989 according to the Tulsa World. Franklin shares his thoughts on why there was a spike in homicide. On May 11 Tulsa Police made an arrest in connection to the 2011 murder of Peggy Gaytan. Franklin reflects on the importance of closing the 9-year-old case.Franklin is a lifelong Tulsan, who graduated from Booker T. Washington. He’s a reader and enjoys studying World War 2. The 46-year-old shares how this led him to better understand and appreciate what Tulsa has overcome the last two months and how proud he is of his fellow citizens for how they have responded to the pandemic. Here is my conversation with Police Chief Wendell Franklin.

On Feb. 24, 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court heard argument in Opati v. Republic of Sudan, a case involving a dispute over whether the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act authorizes punitive damages for terrorist activities that took place before Congress amended the statute to provide an express cause of action contemplating such damages. Following the 1998 al Qaeda bombing of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, victims and their families brought suit against the Republic of Sudan, alleging that it had assisted al Qaeda in carrying out the attacks. In doing so, plaintiffs invoked a terrorism exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA)--but there was uncertainty as to whether, even in the absence of an immunity bar, Congress had provided a federal cause of action for claimants such as plaintiffs. In 2008, however, Congress amended FSIA to provide an express cause of action and directed that claims such as plaintiffs’ be treated “as if ” they had been originally filed under the new cause of action. Congress also made punitive damages available under the new cause of action and authorized the filing of new claims that arose out of the same incident as earlier claims. Plaintiffs amended their complaint accordingly and, following a bench trial, obtained a multi-billion dollar damages award, including more than $4 billion in punitive damages. Sudan challenged the punitive damages award on appeal, arguing that Congress had not expressly authorized punitive damages based on conduct that predated its 2008 legislation. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit agreed, but the Supreme Court subsequently granted certiorari to consider whether, consistent with its decision in Republic of Austria v. Altmann, 541 U.S. 677 (2004), FSIA applies retroactively, thereby permitting recovery of punitive damages under 28 U.S.C. § 1605A(c) against foreign states for terrorist activities occurring prior to the passage of the current version of the statute. On Feb. 26, 2020, in a 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court decided Shular v. United States, rejecting the defense argument that Florida’s unique drug laws cannot be used to enhance a federal sentence. At issue was a federal statute known as the Armed Career Criminal Act (“ACCA”). ACCA imposes a mandatory 15-year sentence on defendants convicted of federal firearms-related felonies if they have 3 or more prior convictions for “serious drug offenses” or “violent felonies.” In 2017, local law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at the Florida home of Eddie Shular who was the target of a drug trafficking investigation being conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”). During the search, the officers seized a firearm from a bedroom closet. Because Shular was a convicted felon, he was charged under federal law with the crime of being a felon in possession of a firearm (18 USC section 922(g)(1)). He pled guilty to that offense and because he had more than three prior convictions for serious drug offenses, he was sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison under the applicable federal statute. He appealed his sentence arguing that because, under Florida law, none of his state convictions would qualify as a “serious drug offense” because the relevant state laws did not require that the government prove that Shular had “knowledge of the illicit nature of the substance,” and the Florida crimes were, therefore, broader than the generic drug offense analogs under federal law. The Eleventh Circuit upheld his conviction and sentence, rejecting the application of the “categorical approach” to defining “serious drug offenses, and holding that the ACCA definition “requires only that the predicate offense involves certain activities related to controlled substances.” The Supreme Court affirmed, holding that “serious drug offense” requires only that the state offense involves the conduct specified in the statute, and does not require that the state offense in question match certain generic drug offenses under federal law. The opinion was written by Justice Ginsburg. Justice Kavanaugh filed a concurring opinion. To discuss the case, we have Gregory A. Brower, Shareholder, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck.

Taglieri, holding that a child’s habitual residence under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction depends on the totality of the circumstances specific to the case, not on categorical requirements such as an actual agreement between the parents. The Hague Convention, and the federal law that implements it in the United States, indicate that a parent whose child has been removed to another country in violation of that parent’s custodial rights can petition in federal or state court for the return of the child to the child’s country of habitual residence. The courts of that country can then resolve any underlying custody disputes. The opinion was given by Justice Ginsburg. Justice Thomas joined as to Parts I, III and IV, and filed an opinion concurring in part and concurring in the judgment. Justice Alito filed an opinion concurring in part and concurring in the judgment. To discuss the case, we have Margaret Ryznar, Professor of Law, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.As always, the Federalist Society takes no particular legal or public policy positions. All opinions expressed are those of the speakers.

“My biggest goal right now is making the Olympic team for 2020. I feel like that’s a start. Sometimes I get a little scared thinking about bigger goals for years and years down the road. I like to do incremental ones. I think I would want to be known as a tough runner. I feel like I’m not super glamorous but a little more blue collar – just getting the work done and being tough. I like to be a badass.” On Feb. 9th, Elle Purrier broke a 37-year-old American record when she won the Millrose Games mile in 4:16.85. Her time took seven-tenths off Mary Slaney's time and now ranks as the second-fastest indoor mile in history. Before her breakout indoor season, Dana and Elle sit down during a high-altitude training stint in Flagstaff, Arizona to dive into some of her upbringings on a dairy farm in northern Vermont and what led to her success at the University of New Hampshire and post-collegiately. She now has her sights set on making her first U.S. Olympic team in 2021. In 2019, Purrier qualified for her first national team and competed in the 5,000 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Doha. She finished 11th with a personal best of 14:58.17. She is one of 16 American women who have broken 15 minutes on the track for 5,000 meters. Her personal best of 4:02:34 for the 1,500 meters also makes her a contender for that squad to Tokyo. On this episode, we touch on: - Growing up on a farm in Montgomery, Vermont - Brief basketball aspirations - Experiencing a runner’s high - Her favorite parts of training and some of the craziest workouts that she’s done - Advice for a high school runner pursuing running at a higher level - Envisioning her legacy within the sport as a competitor - The 5th Avenue Mile finish: “That’s a classic example of not overthinking something and just competing. That’s when I think I have my best races. That’s definitely a good lesson.” - And more... ➡️ Follow Elle on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elleruns_4_her_life/ ▶ Follow Dana: https://twitter.com/dana_gio6 https://www.instagram.com/dana_gio/ ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag instagram.com/citiusmag facebook.com/citiusmag Recommended read: Olympic hopefuls Gevvie Stone, Elle Purrier have very different paths ahead to Tokyo in 2021 (NBC Sports) | https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2020/03/25/tokyo-olympics-gevvie-stone-elle-purrier/ Photo for this episode's cover art by Kevin Morris | https://www.kevmofoto.com/

This comeback story was to be paired with a forthcoming visit to the enigmatic Stanich’s in what we were calling our “Lazarus” or “Flatliners” episode -- two old bars pronounced dead that somehow returned to tell the tale. Now, every drinking establishment in the metro area will face the same improbable challenge.  On March 16, COVID-19 social distancing efforts forced every bar, tavern, saloon, pub, and lounge in the state to put its stools on the counter and send its staff into the virtual unemployment line. Even as our local health news slowly improves, they all face an uncertain future.  We discussed it all over several rounds in our Steinhaus/Buddy’s Lounge glassware, in front of our ubiquitous, soul-sucking Zoom cameras in this very special, history in the making episode of HBTG...dedicated to every single person who has brought us joy one glass at a time in bars throughout Portland and beyond. Lindsay Buziak's unsolved homicide remains one of Canada’s most infamous cold cases. On Feb. 2, 2008, the 24-year-old realtor was scheduled to show a Saanich home to a potential buyer. However, the woman caller had a foreign accent and made Lindsay uncomfortable. The woman wanted to see a million-dollar home in Saanich.Lindsay told both her father, Jeff Buziak, and her boyfriend, Jason Zailo, that something seemed suspicious about the phone call. Police later said the call was made from a cellphone purchased in Vancouver under a false name and used only once for luring Lindsay to the home.Lindsay asked her boyfriend to attend the showing with her. Zailo arrived 10 minutes late with a friend. The two men waited outside for Lindsay. Zailo told officers that as he waited, he saw a man and woman open the front door and then close it again. Zailo tried the front door, but found it locked. His friend found the back door open. Zailo entered and found Lindsay dead in an upstairs bedroom. Someone had stabbed her at least 40 times.Note*** The opening clip was an interview with Dr. Phil (www.drphil.com) and Jeff Buziak. 2-25-20 Tonight at 9PM ET GotMead Live will be talking with Roger Wanner and Joe Abruzzo, owners of W A Meadwerks on Long Island in New York. These guys are truly passionate about their mead, and managed to open a meadery in a place that's pretty darn expensive, and do it on a shoestring. Roger will be speaking at MeadCon this year on how they managed to open their meadery with very little up front. W A Meadwerks started in Roger's basement in West Islip after being lucky enough to try commercial meads from Schramms, Superstition and Melovino. They made a few good batches and they dumped a few at the beginning. After the bad batches, they started upgrading Roger's basement. They started to enter some of their meads in local competitions. They won some awards and received some great feed back. At that point they had the insane idea to open a commercial meadery, the idea being that one did not exist on Long Island. They opened their doors in Lindenhurst, Long Island, NY in September of 2018. After being open a little under a year they decided to try and put together an all mead festival on Long Island with the help of their village. The first year of the festival had 6 commercial meaderies, mead sent to them from all over the country along with more than 25 home made meads. The event was wildly successful and will be held again this year. 18 months in and they are have already out grown their production in their current space. On Feb 19th they signed the lease to a second production space and look forward to their growth in 2020. Roger started making beer with kits in his basement, and discovered mead as he dug deeper into craft brewing. He fell in love with it, and with the science of meadmaking. Joe has been in the Long Island bar and restaurant industry for the last 20 years. He also worked in one of the best craft beer bars on Long Island for 7 years and spent a year and a half at a brewery. He's been into craft beer for about 10 years. Who has it? Who should have it? What power does God have and how does God use it? Power is one of the most complex subjects in the Holy Scriptures, primarily because so much of what it teaches about power seems contradictory: Is God an all-powerful Creator, or a God who “empties himself” of power to assume flesh and die in humiliation and weakness? Each Sunday in February, we explore power from a different angle. On Feb. 2nd, we looked at our charged world, full of good and evil powers, with the help of theologian Walter Wink. On Feb. 9th, we explored the confounding idea that God’s strength is known in weakness. On Feb. 23rd, we explore the work of Reinhold Niebuhr and “Christian realism” and ask ourselves what faithful power looks like in the face of dictators, genocide, and institutional evil.

On Feb. 12, Hubei health authorities announced an additional 14,840 cases of the coronavirus. It marks the largest single-day rise since the epidemic began and is almost 10 times the number of added cases from the day before. Health authorities said the spike was due to the inclusion of “clinically diagnosed cases” in Hubei. Others suspect the true reason is because of a recent change in top leadership in Hubei province and Wuhan city, as these two Xi Jinping appointees seek to avoid taking responsibility for their predecessors’ incompetence and concealment of the epidemic. To decode these events, Zooming In did a thorough case study of one of China’s most popular media outlet’s coverage of the coronavirus epidemic. We also did a preliminary calculation of the infected population and death toll in Wuhan based on an exclusive investigation by the Epoch Media Group into one of Wuhan’s funeral homes. Creating a New Healthcare
Episode #79 - Creating Consumer-Centric Care with Alan Lotvin MD of CVS Health

Creating a New Healthcare

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2020 28:48

Dear Friends & Colleagues,Today’s episode shares unique insights into one of the most powerful examples of transformation occurring in the American healthcare market. The leadership at CVS Health has been intentionally curating an expansive and comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery - specifically in the arena of chronic disease management, which makes up the vast majority of encounters and dollars spent in healthcare.  By way of quick background, CVS Health - previously the CVS Corporation - was renamed in 2014, following a landmark strategic decision to remove cigarettes and other tobacco products from its shelves. Its assets now include: One of the largest payers in the country (Aetna), and its accompanying state-of-the-art consumer analytic and population health analytic capabilities;CVS Minute Clinic, a provider arm which has now been greatly expanded with HealthHubs;CVS Pharmacy, one of the largest retail pharmacy chains, including its Specialty pharmacy;CVS Caremark, one of the largest pharmacy benefits managers in the US. Our guest this week is Dr. Alan Lotvin, who, at the time of this interview was Executive Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer for CVS Health. On Feb 12, 2020, one day prior to the posting of this episode, Dr. Lotvin was appointed President of CVS Caremark, the largest division of CVS Health. This represents a significant opportunity and is a measure of the trust the organization places in him. He will also have oversight of CVS Specialty and CVS Kidney Care. Dr. Lotvin has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical benefit management and specialty pharmacy industries. He began his career as a practicing cardiologist in New Jersey. He holds a master's degree in Medical Informatics from Columbia University and also holds a US Patent for Circulatory Valve Repair. In this interview, you’ll hear:How CVS Health is constructing a consumer-centric healthcare system - making it easier, affordable and more convenient to stay healthy. The broad swath of chronic diseases that CVS Health plans to manage.CVS Health’s differentiating value proposition and its new positioning in the larger delivery ecosystem. How the vertical assets of CVS Health are enabling it to create and optimize value-based health services. How CVS Health is using its multiple sources of data and it’s powerhouse consumer analytics to improve patient engagement and health outcomes.CVS Health represents one of the most remarkable stories in the annals of American healthcare.  As described in my book on Reframing Healthcare, I consider CVS Health to be one of the poster childs for what a consumer-oriented, value-based healthcare approach should be. What you will hear woven throughout this interview is a story of a purposeful leadership team committed to creating care that is safe, effective, convenient, easy to use and navigate, all while being affordable. It is also a story of leadership that has been forward thinking enough to invest heavily in the most cutting edge analytics to identify patients in need and proactively assist them in accessing the care they need to stay healthy. There is another facet of this story that also needs to be underscored. The CVS Health approach is a collaborative one. Dr. Lotvin refers to “collaborative partnership agreements” and “open platform models” of care. He points out that while healthcare is highly competitive, there is also the opportunity to cooperate - the notion of ‘coopetition’. This understanding also points toward the direction I believe American healthcare should be heading - toward a more open ecosystem of care rather than the closed legacy system models and platforms of the past. The ‘ecosystem economy’ is upon us, and we, in healthcare, have the unique opportunity to actually contribute to creating a more connected, agile and responsive system of healthcare.  I’ll leave you with a quote from Dr. Lotvin which captures this overarching sentiment. “There is so much opportunity for us to do the right thing for patients and consumers, and really improve healthcare… We need to be tenacious and get through all the problems because the opportunity is really there to do important work that will benefit people, benefit society and benefit the people who are able to do it well. It’s the proverbial win for everyone.” Until Next Time, Be Well.Zeev Neuwirth MD
