Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Check out Sam's YouTube channel here: YouTube.com/@TheFilmFanclub Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Climax is a 2018 psychological horror film directed, written, and co-edited by Gaspar Noé. Featuring an ensemble cast of 24 actors, led by Sofia Boutella, the plot is set in 1996 and follows a French dance troupe holding a days-long rehearsal in an abandoned school; the final night of rehearsing is a success, but the group's celebratory after-party takes a dark turn when the communal bowl of sangria is spiked with LSD, sending each of the dancers into agitated, confused and psychotic states. Kill Your Friends is a 2015 British satirical black comedy crime-thriller film directed by Owen Harris and written by John Niven based on his 2008 novel of the same name. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Craig Roberts, Tom Riley, and Georgia King.

On this episode of Sparking Change, Dil speaks to Owen Harris – game and Virtual Reality designer – about his VR experience, ‘DEEP’, and how ordinary board games also help him to take care of his mental health. Owen has dealt regularly with anxiety and depression over the years, and DEEP was originally his safe space; an underwater world he built, where he could go to meditate when things got hard. Not only is it visually stunning, but the game’s controller is slow, full breaths – like in yoga, or scuba-diving – and the more controlled your breathing, the more control you have in the game. With mental health issues and anxiety skyrocketing around us, it’s always important to seek help when you need it. DEEP is not a replacement for conventional therapies, but a complementary experience that could help put out the fire before it starts.

We're doing something a little different this month! Instead of tackling a topic ourselves, we've invited ten of our favorite designers onto the podcast to share their personal game design processes and philosophies. Whether you're interested in mobile games, VR, tabletop games, narrative design, escape rooms, or just listening to talented people share their secrets, you're not going to want to miss this one! Special thanks to Alexei Othenin-Girard, Jacob Burgess, Jonathan Ying, Kyle Pulver, Laura E Hall, Llaura Ash McGee, Owen Harris, Pat Kemp, Sig Gunnarson, and Teale Fristoe for taking the time to share their processes, and to John Smith, Ryan Ike, and Joshua Du Chene for providing the music on this episode.

With an imagination like Charlie Brooker's at your disposal, translating language into imagery is "like butter." If you aren’t familiar with the anthology show, Black Mirror got its start on Great Britain’s Channel 4 way back in 2011. It may best be labeled as “dystopian tech-fi,” in that it deals with technology that exists in our modern world, but could slide into some dark purpose. It's easy to see how society could slip into anyone of the nightmarish scenarios which Brooker creates, and that's what makes the series so effective. After two seasons with Channel 4, Black Mirror would go on to become a sensation in the United States thanks to millions of binge watches on Netflix. So when Channel 4 announced they would no longer be produce the show, it only made sense for Netflix to pick it up and fund a new season themselves. The season premiered on October 21. This episode of the No Film School Podcast is broken up into two parts. The first is an interview with Joe Wright who directed the episode “Nosedive.” Mr. Wright has directed some high budget adaptations including Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Anna Karenina, and most recently Pan. Among other things, we discussed his transition from big budget picture to streaming TV and actors are the most important tool at your disposal as a filmmaker. Next, Producer Jon Fusco talked with Owen Harris, director of the “San Junipero” episode. No stranger to the series, Mr. Harris also directed the classic Be Right Back episode back in Season 2 about a grieving widow who uses computer software that allows you to "talk" to the deceased. We discussed the differences between directing for anthology and episodic TV and his open collaboration with writer/creator Charlie Brooker.
We have a confession to make... Virtual Reality? Oculus Rift? HTC Vive? Haven't really given any of them much thought. We're fascinated enough by, you know, actual reality. But with Mark Zuckerberg recently calling VR the “next major computing and communication platform,” and Virtual Reality poised to be a $40 billion industry by 2020 (Wall Street Journal paywall), we decided it's time to face the inevitable, and strap the inevitable to our face. Who? Max Read was our guide. He's a senior editor at New York Magazine where he recently launched their new tech/culture vertical Select All. He's been reporting on virtual reality for a while. Where? The Tribeca Film Festival's "Storyscapes" program. It was a big showroom filled with cutting edge technology related to storytelling. Basically, a temporary VR convention. No non-nerds allowed. Why? It's time for us to get a handle on this new wave of technology, and figure out how it could impact our lives. We had some reservations — like the cringe-y idea of shining a screen a few inches away from a child's eyes — but with every technological innovation come unwarranted fears. Remember how parents always told their kids not to sit right in from of the TV? Max Read: editor or VR model? In this episode we mention a few examples of VR technology: DEEP VR, developers Niki Smit and Owen Harris Google Cardboard, boosted by the New York Times The Turning Forest, Chris Pike from BBC Research & Development Listen to the episode (player above) to hear what happened when Manoush and Max took VR off the lot for a tech drive (sorry). But minor spoiler: there's a lot of grey area. Instead of learning about the Great Wall of China, students could actually go there. But what if they become so invested in these immersive, virtual worlds, they withdraw from the real world? We weren't really thinking about VR before... but we are now. Locked in a bunker, presumably because the rest of the world is dying off at a rapid rate, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan are forced to do nothing but talk to each other for another week. This time, it's about 10 Cloverfield Lane, the sequel to 2008's Cloverfield. Directed by Dan Tractenberg, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr. Some points of discussion are: does this work as a sequel to Cloverfield? Can John Goodman ever not be great? Why does Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character remind them of You're Next? Chris also saw Kill Your Friends, from Owen Harris who previously directed the movie about Sam Houser of Grand Theft Auto fame -The Gamechangers. Dylan goes back into the vault and discusses why Erin Brockovich is still great and maintains that Julia Roberts is a great actress. There is also discussion of some news that has happened over the past week, including a new way to possibly watch films currently in theaters but at home. There are also a slew of Blu-ray releases that have been released, most notably Brooklyn, Carol, and The Big Short. Next week we will be reviewing The Little Prince and Man of Steel.
Cast members Nicholas Hoult, Ed Skrein and Craig Roberts join director Owen Harris and writer John Niven to talk about their new film, Kill Your Friends. The film tells the story of an A&R executive pushing the excesses of the Brit Pop era music industry to the extreme. Hosted by Edith Bowman at the Apple Store, Covent Garden in London.
