POPULARITY
And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities.2 And the people blessed all the men, that willingly offered themselves to dwell at Jerusalem.3 Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants.4 And at Jerusalem dwelt certain of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin. Of the children of Judah; Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalaleel, of the children of Perez;5 And Maaseiah the son of Baruch, the son of Colhozeh, the son of Hazaiah, the son of Adaiah, the son of Joiarib, the son of Zechariah, the son of Shiloni.6 All the sons of Perez that dwelt at Jerusalem were four hundred threescore and eight valiant men.7 And these are the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jesaiah.8 And after him Gabbai, Sallai, nine hundred twenty and eight.9 And Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer: and Judah the son of Senuah was second over the city.10 Of the priests: Jedaiah the son of Joiarib, Jachin.11 Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, was the ruler of the house of God.12 And their brethren that did the work of the house were eight hundred twenty and two: and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchiah.13 And his brethren, chief of the fathers, two hundred forty and two: and Amashai the son of Azareel, the son of Ahasai, the son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer,14 And their brethren, mighty men of valour, an hundred twenty and eight: and their overseer was Zabdiel, the son of one of the great men.15 Also of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hashub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni;16 And Shabbethai and Jozabad, of the chief of the Levites, had the oversight of the outward business of the house of God.17 And Mattaniah the son of Micha, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, was the principal to begin the thanksgiving in prayer: and Bakbukiah the second among his brethren, and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.18 All the Levites in the holy city were two hundred fourscore and four.19 Moreover the porters, Akkub, Talmon, and their brethren that kept the gates, were an hundred seventy and two.20 And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance.21 But the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel: and Ziha and Gispa were over the Nethinims.22 The overseer also of the Levites at Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micha. Of the sons of Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of God.23 For it was the king's commandment concerning them, that a certain portion should be for the singers, due for every day.24 And Pethahiah the son of Meshezabeel, of the children of Zerah the son of Judah, was at the king's hand in all matters concerning the people.25 And for the villages, with their fields, some of the children of Judah dwelt at Kirjatharba, and in the villages thereof, and at Dibon, and in the villages thereof, and at Jekabzeel, and in the villages thereof,26 And at Jeshua, and at Moladah, and at Bethphelet,27 And at Hazarshual, and at Beersheba, and in the villages thereof,28 And at Ziklag, and at Mekonah, and in the villages thereof,29 And at Enrimmon, and at Zareah, and at Jarmuth,30 Zanoah, Adullam, and in their villages, at Lachish, and the fields thereof, at Azekah, and in the villages thereof. And they dwelt from Beersheba unto the valley of Hinnom.31 The children also of Benjamin from Geba dwelt at Michmash, and Aija, and Bethel, and in their villages.32 And at Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,33 Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim,34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,35 Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen.36 And of the Levites were divisions in Judah, and in Benjamin.
Now those that sealed were, Nehemiah, the Tirshatha, the son of Hachaliah, and Zidkijah,2 Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,3 Pashur, Amariah, Malchijah,4 Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch,5 Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah,6 Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch,7 Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin,8 Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah: these were the priests.9 And the Levites: both Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel;10 And their brethren, Shebaniah, Hodijah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,11 Micha, Rehob, Hashabiah,12 Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah,13 Hodijah, Bani, Beninu.14 The chief of the people; Parosh, Pahathmoab, Elam, Zatthu, Bani,15 Bunni, Azgad, Bebai,16 Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,17 Ater, Hizkijah, Azzur,18 Hodijah, Hashum, Bezai,19 Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai,20 Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir,21 Meshezabeel, Zadok, Jaddua,22 Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah,23 Hoshea, Hananiah, Hashub,24 Hallohesh, Pileha, Shobek,25 Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah,26 And Ahijah, Hanan, Anan,27 Malluch, Harim, Baanah.28 And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;29 They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;30 And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, not take their daughters for our sons:31 And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.32 Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;33 For the shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.34 And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the law:35 And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the Lord:36 Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:37 And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.39 For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.
Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,2 That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.3 And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.4 Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.5 And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,6 These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;7 Who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, Baanah. The number, I say, of the men of the people of Israel was this;8 The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two.9 The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.10 The children of Arah, six hundred fifty and two.11 The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand and eight hundred and eighteen.12 The children of Elam, a thousand two five.37 The children of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred twenty and one.38 The children of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.39 The priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Ziha, the children of Hashupha, the children of Tabbaoth,47 The children of Keros, the children of Sia, the children of Padon,48 The children of Lebana, the children of Hagaba, the children of Shalmai,49 The children of Hanan, the children of Giddel, the children of Gahar,50 The children of Reaiah, the children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda,51 The children of Gazzam, the children of Uzza, the children of Phaseah,52 The children of Besai, the children of Meunim, the children of Nephishesim,53 The children of Bakbuk, the children of Hakupha, the children of Harhur,54 The children of Bazlith, the children of Mehida, the children of Harsha,55 The children of Barkos, the children of Sisera, the children of Tamah,56 The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.57 The children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Perida,58 The children of Jaala, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,59 The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.60 All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety and two.61 And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father's house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.62 The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred forty and two.63 And of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai, which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife, and was called after their name.64 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.65 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.66 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,67 Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.68 Their horses, seven hundred thirty and six: their mules, two hundred forty and five:69 Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses.70 And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests' garments.71 And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver.72 And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests' garments.73 So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore.2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.4 Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.5 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away.7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;8 And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.10 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.11 Now therefore make confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.13 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.16 And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month.18 And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.19 And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass.20 And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah.21 And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.22 And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.23 Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.24 Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.25 Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.26 And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah.27 And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.28 Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai.29 And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.30 And of the sons of Pahathmoab; Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.31 And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.33 Of the sons of Hashum; Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei.34 Of the sons of Bani; Maadai, Amram, and Uel,35 Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh,36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasau,38 And Bani, and Binnui, Shimei,39 And Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah,40 Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai,41 Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah,42 Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph.43 Of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, and Joel, Benaiah.44 All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;2 Which came with Zerubbabel: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mizpar, Bigvai, Rehum, Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel:3 The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two.4 The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.5 The children of Arah, seven hundred seventy and five.6 The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and twelve.7 The children of Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four.8 The children of Zattu, nine hundred forty and five.9 The children of Zaccai, seven hundred and threescore.10 The children of Bani, six hundred forty and two.11 The children of Bebai, six hundred twenty and three.12 The children of Azgad, a thousand two hundred twenty and two.13 The children of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six.14 The children of Bigvai, two thousand fifty and six.15 The children of Adin, four hundred fifty and four.16 The children of Ater of Hezekiah, ninety and eight.17 The children of Bezai, three hundred twenty and three.18 The children of Jorah, an hundred and twelve.19 The children of Hashum, two hundred twenty and three.20 The children of Gibbar, ninety and five.21 The children of Bethlehem, an hundred twenty and three.22 The men of Netophah, fifty and six.23 The men of Anathoth, an hundred twenty and eight.24 The children of Azmaveth, forty and two.25 The children of Kirjatharim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty and three.26 The children of Ramah and Gaba, six hundred twenty and one.27 The men of Michmas, an hundred twenty and two.28 The men of Bethel and Ai, two hundred twenty and three.29 The children of Nebo, fifty and two.30 The children of Magbish, an hundred fifty and six.31 The children of the other Elam, a thousand two hundred fifty and four.32 The children of Harim, three hundred and twenty.33 The children of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred twenty and five.34 The children of Jericho, three hundred forty and five.35 The children of Senaah, three thousand and six hundred and thirty.36 The priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three.37 The children of Immer, a thousand fifty and two.38 The children of Pashur, a thousand two hundred forty and seven.39 The children of Harim, a thousand and seventeen.40 The Levites: the children of Jeshua and Kadmiel, of the children of Hodaviah, seventy and four.41 The singers: the children of Asaph, an hundred twenty and eight.42 The children of the porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, in all an hundred thirty and nine.43 The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth,44 The children of Keros, the children of Siaha, the children of Padon,45 The children of Lebanah, the children of Hagabah, the children of Akkub,46 The children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, the children of Hanan,47 The children of Giddel, the children of Gahar, the children of Reaiah,48 The children of Rezin, the children of Nekoda, the children of Gazzam,49 The children of Uzza, the children of Paseah, the children of Besai,50 The children of Asnah, the children of Mehunim, the children of Nephusim,51 The children of Bakbuk, the children of Hakupha, the children of Harhur,52 The children of Bazluth, the children of Mehida, the children of Harsha,53 The children of Barkos, the children of Sisera, the children of Thamah,54 The children of Neziah, the children of Hatipha.55 The children of Solomon's servants: the children of Sotai, the children of Sophereth, the children of Peruda,56 The children of Jaalah, the children of Darkon, the children of Giddel,57 The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Ami.58 All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety and two.59 And these were they which went up from Telmelah, Telharsa, Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not shew their father's house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:60 The children of Delaiah, the children of Tobiah, the children of Nekoda, six hundred fifty and two.61 And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Koz, the children of Barzillai; which took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name:62 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.63 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and with Thummim.64 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,65 Beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and there were among them two hundred singing men and singing women.66 Their horses were seven hundred thirty and six; their mules, two hundred forty and five;67 Their camels, four hundred thirty and five; their asses, six thousand seven hundred and twenty.68 And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:69 They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests' garments.70 So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.

A (About): Jeremiah is persecuted by Pashur for speaking God's truth, yet he boldly prophesies judgment against him and Judah for their lies and idolatry. B (Best Verse): Jeremiah 20:6 – "…to whom you have prophesied lies." C (Call): Receive God's Word with humility, even when it convicts, and repent rather than resist.
2 Samuel 16 verses 1-4 describe the betrayal of Mephibosheth by Ziba the manager of Mephibosheth's estate. Ziba met the fleeing David and slandered his master by lying about Mephibosheth's words claiming that Mephibosheth had said that he would be advanced by Absalom. Ziba came bearing gifts hoping to ingratiate himself to David so that should the king survive the attempted usurpation he would promote Ziba. The food, wine and fruit were of great value to the needy king.Ziba's appeared to be a no lose strategy. Should Absalom's usurpation work it would totally destroy Mephibosheth's position and, possibly, securing Zibah's advancement. In the unlikely event of David being victorious he had already secured the current king's favour.Verses 5-14 tell of another betrayal by the Benjaminite Shimei as he stood at a distance and following David threw stones, dust and curses at the king because of the bloodshed experienced by Saul's household at the hands of David and his warriors. The hot-headed Abishai asked permission from David to separate Shimei's head from his body. David forbade that action saying that he deserved the blasphemy of this Benjaminite. Shimei's treachery was minor alongside Absalom's insurrection. After passing through the Kidron valley David refreshed himself. In verses 15-19 Absalom enters Jerusalem and there is met by Hushai who feigns friendship with Absalom who seems surprised by this. Hushai says he will be grateful to serve Absalom. Absalom's Achilles' heel is his pride which Hushai will continue to exploit so that Absalom's rebellion will fail. Hushai is the providential answer to David's prayers. We also see the value of true friendship. True friends stand by each other regardless of the danger, or cost. In verses 20-23 Ahithophel David's former counsellor, but now his arch enemy, gives his counsel as to how Absalom must act to drive an irrecoverable chasm between David and Absalom. This action involves a public defiling of the king's concubines. This was the right only of a king. It meant that the people of Israel would be forced to choose sides in the upcoming war. Ahithophel's advice was perfect to achieve the desired outcome. In Jeremiah's 20th chapter we see the outrageous abuse of Jeremiah, at the hand of Pashur. This false prophet put Jeremiah in the stocks and arranged to have him severely beaten. But, our Sovereign doesn't take lightly the affliction of His beloved children, and will recompense the evil upon the heads of the perpetrators. Pashur is given the appellation: "Terror on every side", as a prophecy of the terror the false prophet not only brought to others, but would incessantly experience in the remainder of his miserable life. Pashur would be repaid when he would experience terror as Pashur and his family were dragged to Babylon. At terrible times lying prophets appear to prosper. We see many of these prophets in chapter 23 and another prominent example of one of these in chapter 28. In verses 7-12 Jeremiah laments his terrible treatment that has been caused by his faithfulness to the LORD God Almighty. The prophet claims that this was not how God should reward them that speak for their God. In his extremity Jeremiah says that his Sovereign has deceived him. The prophet says that because of his suffering he tried to keep silent. However he could not because the Word of the LORD was like a fire in his bones. Do we share the prophet's zeal for the message of his God? O that we do! Verses 10-12 tell us that Jeremiah felt betrayed by his friends but the prophet knew that his Omnipotent Sovereign would never abandon his faithful servant. Yahweh would recompense Jeremiah's foes. In verses 14-18 Jeremiah, feeling extremely depressed like Job, pleads with Yahweh to end the prophet's own monumental miseries. Romans 5 enumerates the blessings of justification by faith and the process in life through which we go to bring us to a state of being at peace with God. Carefully read verses 1-5 to better understand what the Almighty does to develop character in His children. The Apostle points out that the saving initiative comes from, and also commences with, our Father. Slowly read aloud verses 6-11 and marvel at the loving kindness of our Sovereign. Paul next elaborates the problem produced by our Adamic heritage - not our fault, but our misfortune - and contrasts this with the boundless blessings and benefits for those who transferred their allegiances to our Lord Jesus Christ, the one man by whom many have been made righteous. Romans chapter 6 outlines the process by which we identify with the salvation wrought in Jesus. Baptism (burial in water) joins us symbolically to the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus. We no longer remain the servants of sin, but rather became slaves of God, serving righteousness. In verses 12-22 the Apostle speaks of our transferring of our allegiance from king sin, who we have tirelessly slaved for until we joined Christ through belief and baptism, to God and His Son the Christ in whom we have been liberated from past slavery. We now are in a position to receive the gracious gift of God, rather than rightfully being rewarded by our deserts. Meditate on the meaning of verse 23 - we earn death, but God graciously gives eternal life.
Jeremiah 20 is one of the most interesting passages in Scripture. It records a prayer from the prophet Jeremiah who, having been physically beaten by the priest Pashur and jailed, subsequently utters a very honest prayer to God that is full of doubt and faith. It's a fascinating text worthy of reflection because it nudges us to rethink some of our own misconceptions about prayer, as well as the relationship between faith and doubt.+++Support the The Bible (Unmuted) via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheBibleUnmutedRead Matt's blog: matthewhalsted.substack.comDon't forget to subscribe to The Bible (Unmuted)!

Jeremiah 38-1-6 -Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,-2 Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence- but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live- for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.-3 Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.-4 - Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death- for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them- for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.-5 - Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand- for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.-6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison- and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire- so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.-
So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.2 Now the first inhabitants that dwelt in their possessions in their cities were, the Israelites, the priests, Levites, and the Nethinims.3 And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Manasseh;4 Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Pharez the son of Judah.5 And of the Shilonites; Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons.6 And of the sons of Zerah; Jeuel, and their brethren, six hundred and ninety.7 And of the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hasenuah,8 And Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, and Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephathiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah;9 And their brethren, according to their generations, nine hundred and fifty and six. All these men were chief of the fathers in the house of their fathers.10 And of the priests; Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, and Jachin,11 And Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God;12 And Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchijah, and Maasiai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer;13 And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and threescore; very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.14 And of the Levites; Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;15 And Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Micah, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph;16 And Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, that dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites.17 And the porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief;18 Who hitherto waited in the king's gate eastward: they were porters in the companies of the children of Levi.19 And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the Lord, were keepers of the entry.20 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the Lord was with him.21 And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.24 In four quarters were the porters, toward the east, west, north, and south.25 And their brethren, which were in their villages, were to come after seven days from time to time with them.26 For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.27 And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.28 And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale.29 Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.30 And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices.31 And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the things that were made in the pans.32 And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath.33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.34 These chief fathers of the Levites were chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem.35 And in Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, Jehiel, whose wife's name was Maachah:36 And his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab.37 And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.38 And Mikloth begat Shimeam. And they also dwelt with their brethren at Jerusalem, over against their brethren.39 And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.40 And the son of Jonathan was Meribbaal: and Meribbaal begat Micah.41 And the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Tahrea, and Ahaz.42 And Ahaz begat Jarah; and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza;43 And Moza begat Binea; and Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.44 And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan: these were the sons of Azel.
The exile of Babylon is spoken to Pashur the priest by Jeremiah, who grieves at the unpopularity of the message God continually gives him to Prophecy, hence his being named the Weeping Prophet. Pauls letter to the Ephesians is a clear picture of what God desires for us.

église AB Lausanne ; KJV Jeremiah 21 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying, Inquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us. Then said Jeremiah unto them, Thus shall ye say to Zedekiah: Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which besiege you without the walls, and I will assemble them into the midst of this city. And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence. And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy. And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death. He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey. For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. ...

église AB Lausanne ; KJV Jeremiah 20 Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib. For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword. Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon. And thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies. O LORD, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. ...
21:1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when king Zedekiah sent unto him Pashur the son of Melchiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, saying, 21:2 Enquire, I pray thee, of the LORD for us; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon maketh war against us; if so be that the LORD will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us.
I think a man’s life before God can deteriorate in stages. As he passes through those stages, his options narrow. Suppose there is a man who regularly abuses alcohol and drives his car after he’s done it. His friends have warned him; they have even hidden his car keys. One by one he has alienated his friends as he gets angry with them for trying to save his life. Then one day a prophet shows up at his house with a message from God. If you will repent of your drunkenness—if you will check yourself into treatment and get this under control—you can keep your job, your home, your family. If you don’t, you are going to lose everything. That would be a turning point in a man’s life. Two roads lie in front of him. One leads to a good life; the other…not so good. Now suppose the man doesn’t listen; he drives drunk and hurts himself badly. After emergency surgery he has lost a leg and and his job. The prophet comes back again. If you will repent of your drinking—if you will just check into a clinic and get dried out—you can still have a life. You may have lost your job and your leg, but you can still have a life. But suppose he still doesn’t listen. This time he kills a man and goes to prison for manslaughter. Once again the prophet comes to him. You have lost everything except your life. Repent now and you can save that.Does this sound far-fetched to you? Our question here is: How does God think? How does he operate? Would God ever do anything like this? During different stages in our lives, we have the opportunity to turn things around if we will just do it—if we will just listen. And if we won’t, those opportunities may later be closed off to us.Well, for a long time, a prophet named Jeremiah had been getting messages from God for the Kingdom of Judah. At first the message was, Repent and do the right thing and you can live and flourish in this place. There was a good king reigning at that time, but the people were corrupt in ways I don’t even like to talk about. Jeremiah preached for a long time to these people, but nothing changed. One day, a different king found himself in trouble with the king of Babylon, and he sent a priest named Pashur to Jeremiah with a question.

Jeremiah Was the Weeping Prophet. Jeremiah lived in a troubled time. He was given a difficult message to proclaim. The trials of his people made Jeremiah a man of tears.Speaking Out for God Brought Jeremiah Persecution. Telling the truth cost this prophet his freedom so he was stricken by Pashur, the son of the high priest. Finding himself in prison, Jeremiah wanted to resign. Why Couldn’t This Discouraged Preacher Quit?1. He was called. 2. He was saturated with God’s Word3. He was sure his message would meet the needs of God’s people.

Jeremiah sees a potter whose clay has not turned out the way he wanted to, and God uses this to explain his actions. God will rework Israel into a different type of vessel if Israel will change its path, which Paul would echo in 2 Timothy 2:20-21. This does not match what the priests and false prophets were saying at the time, but those people, both then and now are not guaranteed to proclaim what is in the Bible and the catechism. Jeremiah shatters a flask to emphasize the analogy. Jeremiah is placed in stocks by Pashur son of Immer, and the people seek to kill Jeremiah, for prophesying things like Israel will be captured, but people will die unless they surrender. Even Jeremiah's own family is against him, and Jeremiah is despairing more than at any other point in the Bible. At this point, the timeline is interrupted and goes back to the reign of Josiah.

DESCRIPTION: Sometimes G-d wants us to wait until we are mature to enter our promised land. However, when YHWH instructs us to GO - possess the land NOW – it is sin not to obey. Why wait 40 years and suffer cruel hardship. It is the same when our enemies are surrounding us in the land G-d promised us. This is a message, not only for Israel, but for you, personally. ISRAEL: FORMULA FOR MILITARY SUCCESS MUSIC / INTRO "And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that G-d led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines (same Hebrew root as Palestinians), although that was near; for G-d said, 'Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt'." (Torah: Exodus 13:17) The Hebrew word for "led" used above is the word "nachah" which means "to guide" (and by implication "to transport"). It was only a few miles and a few days to the Promised land from Egypt; however, G-d didn't lead the children of Israel directly to the land of promise. There were several reasons for this. There may be several reasons - at least one - why YOU have NOT entered the territory of conquest for which you have labored and prayed for years! Notice, the main reason) G-d didn't directly lead them into the prized goal was because "they might change their minds when faced with warfare, and turn back to their previous state." CONSIDER: 1. If you turn back, God cannot fight for you. Why? Because, when you turn your back, you are disobeying your leading and your Leader (your Spiritual Leader: Meshiach). 2. You will not see MIRACLES unless you put yourself in a position in which G-d can work for you. G-d works in the area of the impossible. What is impossible with men is possible with G-d. 3. Israel – and you, personally - may not need direction, you may just need to go forward. I have been telling you for over a year: “Israel, attack your enemies before it’s too late.” MUSIC After Moshe had sent out the 12 spies to spy out the land, Joshua and Caleb said: "If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it us: a land which flows with milk and honey." (Torah: Numbers 14:8) Caleb had previously told the Moshe and the people, "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it." (Torah: Numbers 13:30) The Hebrew word used for "possess" is "yarash" and means "to occupy by driving out previous tenants and possessing in their place." The meaning is also "to seize, to rob, to inherit." In the parable of the nobleman who went away to a far country, Messiah taught us that during the time before He returns from Heaven, we are to "occupy" until He returns to Planet Earth. The word for "occupy" here used is the Greek "pragmateuomai" which means "to busy oneself with, to trade." There is an old saying, "You are as others see you." The devil knows if you have FEAR in your heart. If you do, ask G-d to help you: to take the fear away. King David said, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee (the LORD)." (Psalm 56:3) Go to the Word of G-d and RECEIVE BY FAITH the power promised in the scriptures, such as: "For G-d has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (Brit Chadashah: 2 Timothy 1:7) In Hebrews 10:35-38 we are admonished, "Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him." In context (see verse 39) we know that this is talking about ultimate wholeness and deliverance and patient enduring unto the coming of the LORD. However, there is a principle here that transfers, or applies, to our singular battles in our lifelong journey to victory. G-d, our Commander, does NOT want us to draw back. MUSIC I used to have two white German Shepherds (Alsatians); one was older, named Pashur, and one was a young pup about three months old, named Padah. The pup was very bold; however, when I walked to the village near my mountain home, the older dog would cower around people and became very fearful. He was so fearful that people would even laugh and make fun of him. It was very embarrassing to me. I have often thought of how displeasing it must be to our Messiah when we are fearful. CONSIDER: Don't draw back from opportunity, or you will give Satan – and your enemies - a victory. You may be in the wilderness but you do NOT have to camp. Go forward! In Torah, Numbers Chapter 14, the people wept and wanted to return to Egypt. It is interesting to note that Moshe did not want the job for which he was chosen. Volunteers can quit, but Moshe could NOT quit: he was drafted (recruited, conscripted). Caleb and Joshua (the only two men of faith among the 12 spies who searched out the land) - who believed and trusted God - were the only members of the people of Israel over 20 years of age that made it into the Promised Land forty years later. G-d said about Caleb, "But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land where into he went; and his seed shall possess it." (Torah: Numbers 14:24) CONSIDER: The children of Israel averaged about 150 funerals a day for 40 years. What a price for NOT going into your PROMISED POSSESSION and receiving your blessing! G-d is looking for ONE person! (Ezekiel 22:30) G-d is NOT looking for an F-16 jet fighter plane or a drone "lock in" missile. He is looking for someone who can use a slingshot. Are YOU that person? We have to be ready. Joshua told the people: "How long are you slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers has given you." (Joshua 18:4) MUSIC Medical science tells us that disease has a relationship with passivity. It appears that non confrontational people get sickly more readily and sometimes draw serious illnesses. There is a price - spiritually, mentally, physically, and materially - for disobedience! And, why would we want to disobey any orders from our Leader that were given to lead us into blessing, power, and honor AND that will bring blessing to others!
