Happy Halloween! My guest today is novelist and author J.W. Ocker whose book "A Season with the Witch: The Magic and Mayhem of Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts" documents his experience moving to "Witch City, USA" for the month of October. Salem is, of course, the site of the famous Witch Trials of 1692, and Ocker tells us about the tragedy that occurred over 300 years ago and how the city handles and embraces that legacy today. From its vibrant month-long celebration of Halloween called Haunted Happenings to its vibrant Wicca community of real life witches, Salem has become synonymous with witchcraft. Ocker is a travel writer with a passion for the strange and weird. He runs a very active blog at OddThingsIveSeen.com and he also hosts his own podcast of the same name. For this Halloween episode, I am also joined by a very special guest co-host, Jennifer, who hosts Haunted Happenstance, a creepy serial podcast set in a historic apartment full of unusual and spooky coincidences. his week Shawn Gilmore and John Ward hang out with paranormal investigator, historian and founder of Village Haunts; While visiting various destinations in the United States Don Traynor never felt satisfied with generic ninety minute historic tours aboard a double decker bus or an amphibious quacker car. The prerecorded vignettes about the points of historical significance just didn’t suffice as the vehicle was cruising past them at 35 miles per hour. Maybe, if you were lucky, you’d get a few extra seconds to snap a picture if the red lights were working in your favor. Then he discovered historical ghost tours. What started with ghost tour on a warm October evening during a visit to Haunted Happenings in Salem, Massachusetts, the shores of which his oldest descendent in America arrived upon on June 24th 1625, soon became a ritual for Don no matter what location he would visit. He found historical ghost tours to be the perfect conduit to fuel his interest in history, his desire to stand in the footsteps of the past, and to provide a forum to discuss paranormal events experienced by guides and patrons similar to his own. In the years to follow Don continued to explore the connection between historical locations and the paranormal with focused attention on connecting to the residual activity. Most probably related to the duel explosion of social networking and paranormal based television programming, the opportunity to communicate with more like minded examiners became much easier to identify and execute. This led to Don joining a now defunct local paranormal investigation group called Chautauqua Paranormal. Although short lived, this opportunity allowed him to investigate and explore historic locations and private homes gaining valuable experience. Open to collaborations and new experiences, Don has worked closely with a number of paranormal investigation groups over the past several years assisting with investigations and events performed by many groups in the New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio region. He is the founder of Village Haunts, a public service endeavor to support historic locations in raising funding to realize their missions through the facilitation of public paranormal investigations of historic locations. Through Village Haunts he has worked with organizations such as the Historic Bemus Point – Stow Ferry, The Daughters of the American Revolution, and Dunkirk Lighthouse & Military Park. Village Haunts is entering its ninth season organizing public ghost tours at Dunkirk Lighthouse and has now facilitated 50+ events at that historic site. Always looking to give back and learn new things, Don is entering his 9th season as a volunteer program coordinator at Lily Dale Assembly in Lily Dale, NY and continues to seek out reportedly haunted locations during his professional travels, with an emphasis on institutional settings.http://www.villagehaunts.com/schedule_events_cons_publics

On Episode 335 of The Harold & Maudecast hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Episode 1 of Blumhouse's new series for Hulu, Into the Dark, "The Body". In partnership with Blumhouse Television, Into The Dark is a horror event series from prolific, award-winning producer, Jason Blum's independent TV studio. The series includes 12 super-sized episodes, with a new installment released each month inspired by a holiday and will feature Blumhouse's signature genre/thriller spin on the story. "The Body" is inspired by Halloween, written by Paul FIscher and Paul Davis, directed by Davis, based on their short of the same title. A sophisticated hitman (Tom Bateman) with a cynical view on Los Angeles and modern society selfie culture, finds himself in a difficult situation when a group of party goers, thinking the body he's carrying is part of a costume, insist he accompanies them to a Halloween party. Unbeknownst to the group, particularly Maggie (Rebbecca Rittenhouse) who has become enamored with him, this Killer doesn't have a change of heart. "The Body" lacks any of the standard elements that excite even casual horror fans. There's no intrigue or mystery. The plot is silly and confusing, at one point The Hitman is separated from The Body and the group decides to transport it themselves, all over the streets, for what reason? No idea. The acting is mediocre. Bateman is the most reconizable most recently seen in Kenneth Branagh's remake of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. His performance is not convincing. Alfie Allen aka Theon from Game of Thrones played the part in the original short and was far superior in the role. There are episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that are much better than this film. There is very little payoff in terms of gore, only at the end do we get anything resembling classic horror gore. If this is the best of the series, it's not likely to entice new Hulu subscribers. We will reserve judgment as we haven't seen all of the episodes yet and some of them have some name stars like Dermot Mulroney. It feels a bit like Jason Blum had a bunch of scripts and none of them were quite good enough to greenlight as features on their own so they put together this anthology. Here's hoping we're wrong. "The Body", Ep 1, Into the Dark, is available to stream on Hulu beginning October 5, 2018. Additionally in this episode we highlight the top Halloween Haunts in the US 2018, Netherworld, The Queen Mary, Salem's Haunted Happenings and more!
