Making a Birth Plan? Here's What You're Probably Missing

Send us a textThe birth plan has become a staple of pregnancy preparation, but most expectant parents are approaching it all wrong. What began as a revolutionary tool for restoring autonomy during the natural birth movement of the 1960s has too often devolved into a rigid checklist that sets birthing people up for disappointment and even trauma.I reframe how we think about birth plans, explaining that they were never meant to be a list of demands but rather a foundation for communication, informed choice, and emotional preparation. Drawing on wisdom from pioneers like Sheila Kitzinger and Penny Simkin, I reveal why the most powerful birth plans focus not on controlling external events but on cultivating internal strength. You'll discover the five most common birth plan mistakes and practical strategies for avoiding them—from treating the plan like an inflexible checklist to using it as a shield against your deepest fears. Through guided visualization exercises and nervous system training techniques, I introduce the concept of a "birth vision" that keeps you anchored in your power even when birth takes unexpected turns.Perhaps most powerfully, I draw parallels between birth and athletic performance, explaining why elite preparation involves not just visualizing your ideal scenario but training for every possible challenge. Just as no professional athlete enters competition without a coach, I share  why dedicated prenatal coaching helps birthing people show up with clarity, confidence, and the ability to stay grounded under pressure.Whether you're preparing for your first birth or looking to heal from a previous experience that left you feeling powerless, this episode offers a revolutionary approach to birth preparation that honors both the unpredictability of birth and your capacity to lead your experience with strength and grace. Welcome back to another episode of The Mama Village! Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to our first international guest, Brittany, all the way from Southern California.  In today's episode, Brittany shares her empowering journey through pregnancy and her beautiful hospital birth story. After feeling pressured by her OBGYN about her rapid weight gain that didn't reflect her overall health, she made the brave decision to switch care providers and hire a private midwife and a doula. Brittany's experience highlights the importance of finding supportive care that truly understands and respects your body and your journey. Brittany will also take us through a touching moment in her postpartum journey—an intuitive ceremony in her first shower after giving birth, where she expressed gratitude to her incredible body for carrying her baby, giving birth and healing postpartum. Brittany also opens up about the challenges she faced in the postpartum period, and how she sought help through a postpartum doula, counselling, and lactation support. This episode is a heartfelt reminder of the strength we all possess, the importance of community, and the journey of motherhood. So, let's dive into Brittany's inspiring story! Host Debra Pascali-Bonaro examines the overuse of epidurals and explores its impact on people's chances to experience a pleasurable orgasmic birth. She encourages listeners to be aware of their options when it comes to epidurals - understanding both the benefits and risks associated with using one. This conversation provides tips on oxytocin enhancers and other techniques to manage pain during childbirth. Debra also discusses how hospitals often use language that can create fear or anxiety around birth, which can lead to unnecessary medical interventions. Tune in to this episode to learn more about how you can have an empowered and pleasurable birthing experience!   In this episode: • The importance to know all options, benefits, risks, alternatives and intuition before making an informed decision about epidural • Exploring Pain vs Suffering in the Hospital • Understanding how comfort measures can provide calm and comfort in labor • How to create a code word for when an epidural is offered • Penny Simkin's Pain Medication Preference Scale helps to understand preferences • Evidence-basedbirth.com provides resources on pain management during labor and birth   Key Takeaways: • Epidurals can be a valuable tool, but overuse is putting people at risk and decreasing their chance of having a pleasurable orgasmic birth • Epidurals typically slow labor and create a hormonal gap • Pain is not a descriptor for many people, but in hospitals it is • The language and environment of hospitals can create pain • Pain and suffering are different; one can exist without the other   Tweetable Quotes: "No one should suffer in childbirth. But by having someone there and now personalizing that we need to justify the budget it's now a personal thing." - Debra Pascali-Bonaro "Pain can be a normal part of labor. It's giving you the messages. When you listen to your body and listen to your baby, you'll be able to feel if you get in one position that feels better that's often leaning forward and moving." - Debra Pascali-Bonaro   Connect with Debra! Later in life, the birth of her second child was a re-traumatizing experience for her, as it commonly can be for survivors. The third time, Juanita used mindfulness tools, meditation, a trauma-informed team to support her, and super strong boundaries to have exactly the birth she desired, even in the midst of a time of national chaos. Today I'm sharing my top 3 books to read while pregnant I do not recommend What to Expect When You're Expecting or other mainstream resources on pregnancy and reproductive health Mainstream maternity education or reproductive health education tends to err on side of very medical, very fear-based and often fairly inaccurate information I do suggest reading very specific things by some brilliant leaders in the space Also opening your mind up to the experience of other people who have been pregnant, who have tried to get pregnant and who have given birth in many ways. https://www.amazon.ca/Killing-Black-Body-Reproduction-Meaning/dp/0679758690/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=killing+the+black+body&qid=1617225010&sr=8-1 (#1 Start with Killing the Black Body by Dorothy E. Roberts) This podcast is called an ethical exploration of parenthood so we need to talk about racism right at the beginning Killing the Black Body is something that will help you understand the immense privilege you have as a white person, and the far reaching effects of racism in the world of reproductive health and pregnancy https://www.amazon.ca/Ina-Mays-Guide-Childbirth-Material/dp/0553381156/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2FMP6FDXQLVHA&dchild=1&keywords=ina+may+gaskin+a+guide+to+childbirth&qid=1617224941&sprefix=ina+may+gas%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-1 (#2 Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth) A cult classic if you will, amongst birth workers and natural birth movement followers The stories that are shared in this book are inspirational and full of hope We do not have to accept the status quo cascade of interventions leading to a surgical birth This is showing us that there is another path; that there are more options available The thing that I find disappointing about this book is that it's very hard to replicate the environment that the book promotes There are some really practical, tactical, strategic things that you will have to do in preparation to have an experience similar to that.  If we're going to give birth in a hospital, we are already stepping outside of our environment and into someone else's I come in at the middle ground, I want you to have a great birth experience in the hospital or at home https://www.amazon.ca/Birth-Partner-5th-Childbirth-Companions/dp/1558329102/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2L77XX872U15B&dchild=1&keywords=the+birth+partner&qid=1617224882&sprefix=the+birth+partner%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-1 (#3 Birth Partner by Penny Simkin) The best resource for birthing partners: the person who will be the primary support for the person giving birth It's an encyclopedia of all the things you need to know  There is a special focus on pain, coping with pain, and the unique experience of pregnancy and birth among survivors of traumatic abuse and sexual assault This book will help YOU understand how to deal with YOUR pain Pain and suffering looks different for everyone It's not a moral issue, something we have to endure or not endure Pain is an intimate issue, which is why I don't spend very much time speaking about pain management in general - however, I am very knowledgeable about pain and it's management so don't be afraid to ask me about it These are my favourite books! During pregnancy and birth, trauma can happen. Dr. Tracey Vogel, an OB anesthesiologist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania talks to us about the stories of such traumas – especially those related to anesthesia and surgery – that she will be featuring in her upcoming book, and how the medical community can help prevent further birth trauma. > “There is a big gap between how providers think they are doing, and how patients think those providers are doing.” There are many problems with how maternal care providers deal with their clients. First, they aren’t asking the right questions. The focus is almost exclusively on the physical; there is little to no addressing of the emotional or mental wellbeing of the patient. If they do ask the right questions, however, they aren’t considering that not all mothers want to tell you about their feelings, especially if they see you as responsible for their terrible experience. Care providers carry on thinking they are doing a good job. Meanwhile, women are traumatized. > “Women end up with PTSD after what should be a positive event.” Conversations about trauma and wellbeing should happen before anyone ever gets to the operating room. Be clear beforehand about views, wishes, and expectations, and talk about contingency plans. Instead of telling the patient how things will be done, there needs to be a shift to inquiry. In order to do that, the medical establishment needs to learn new skills – how to listen and how to plan collaboratively. Being open to feedback isn’t enough; there is a need for proactively seeking feedback, really listening, and being willing to dig a little deeper. So many people are so unaware that they have trauma, or that childbirth, under care, can be retriggering of that trauma. > “One size fits no one.” All of the protocols that we are adopting aren’t for everyone. Birthing needs to be a tailored experience. It’s hard to go through all of this training and find out we need to start again with new skills, but we do. Advice to other clinicians: - Get some education and learn listening skills. - Beware of the phrase “at least.” - Be careful with your words, even “congratulations.” Let patients put their own words to their experience. Before having children, Julia worked as a counselor for youth, adults, couples, and families. She has facilitated a personal growth group for teens, silent retreats for midwives and doulas, and a mindfulness group for new mothers.  I so enjoyed chatting with her in depth about her birth and postpartum stories! Just a few of the things we chat about: -    How birth is a metaphor for what we need to learn as parents-    Her vivid descriptions of her kids' birth stories-    How a 30 day challenge ted talk inspired her to start her book-    How she learned to let go of control when it comes to parenting, and how labor taught her that. -    Looking for the spaces in between the pain – in labor and in life-    The best advice is to not take any advice too seriously-    Love is expansive, not exclusive Here is some praise from the one and only Penny Simkin about Julia's Book: “From her own unique and varied childbearing experiences, Julia Aziz learned much beyond what labor and birth can be like; she guides us through her musings on the lessons gained from her labors–about life as a woman, life partner, mother, and human being. When I was pregnant for the first time, I remember vividly coming back from that first doctor’s appointment. It was the one where the doctor said to me “yes you’re pregnant!”. So now I’m a bit dazed and in shock, and she says to me “well, congratulations! I’ll probably next see you with baby. Good luck!” And I remember thinking WHAT?! What do you mean you’re only going to see me after baby’s born?! Who’s going to look over me? Of course it was the midwife, but I remember feeling completely abandoned in that moment and slightly panicky. Like I needed help being pregnant. It seems silly looking back, but I’m sure I wasn’t alone in feeling this. What I think I needed in that moment was to fast forward in time and listen to the chat that you’re about to hear that I had with today’s guest. Today I’m speaking with Kicki Hansard who’s a bit of a legend in the birthing world. Kicki is a certified birth and postnatal doula with experience in all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting. During the last 12 years, she has been preparing couples for the arrival of their baby and supported many of them through the birth and postnatal period. Kicki is also a doula course facilitator and has trained over 500 aspiring doulas. Kicki has studied with Ina May Gaskin, Sheila Kitzinger, Dr. Jack Newman and the "grandmothers of all doulas", Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus. In 2005, she took part in a television programme called "Mum + One" about doulas, which can still be seen on the Discovery Home & Health Channel. Kicki was also rewarded the Pregnancy & Birth Magazine and Doula UK award "Doula of the Year" in 2009, the first and only time this award has been presented. Kicki is a chapter contributor to the Amazon #1 bestseller, The Roar Behind the Silence and has just launched her own book, The Secrets of Birth. (I'm sorry but this free guide is no longer available.  If you are looking for super useful resources such as this then join the Fearless Mama Ship. Find out more here.) She was also invited to contribute to the UK government initiative 1001 Critcal Days at the Houses of Parliament which is about helping to improve the 1001 days from conception to when a child is 2 years old. Kicki believes that birth is a truly normal, and at the same time, deeply profound event that is optimised by personalised support defined birth goals with flexibility built in and a solid education. Her goals are to instill confidence with true information, equipping women and families for the work of labour, birth and the postnatal period and to understand each family's unique needs and birth goals. During my chat with Kicki we really dance about the whole pregnancy, birth and motherhood thing, but what makes it so great is that you really get a sense listening to Kicki of her philosophy when it comes to pregnancy, birth, and motherhood; and it’s the same for both. Be open and flexible. Know your choices - so do your homework - but trust yourself. Trust your innate wisdom to do what’s right for you and for your baby. There are no shoulds just go with the flow and be flexible to respond to each moment. And be ok with just being ok. It’s really liberating! Pregnancy birth and motherhood Some of the things we talk about include; Using birth and pregnancy to find out more about yourself and use what you learn in other parts of your life Why its important to be flexible and open in your mind when it comes to birth and motherhood The futility of the fight against wanting it to be normal. It being birth or motherhood. She says “it was the struggle that was painful, not what was going on around me. When I accepted it and enjoyed it, it became easier.” Being open to finding a new “normal”  in motherhood and the lessons for us to learn in being flexible Why our need to control things is damaging. "You can’t control birth. Once it starts, it’s about going with the flow. Just like being a parent!"

The Birthful Podcast | Talking with Pregnancy, Birth, Breastfeeding, Postpartum & Parenting Pros to Inform Your Intuition

Today’s show is about connecting with your baby in utero through song. Figuring out a newborn’s needs can be tricky, and sometimes a baby will cry no matter what you do. Penny Simkin is here to tell us about just that.
