I have been an active participant in the yoga industry since the early 2000s, and I have never really understood how brick and mortar yoga studios, especially locally owned ones without corporate backing, made it work.  I've been curious about it, and I have seen a few studios run incredibly well and last a long time, but we all know those are the outliers. These spaces are so important for us as teachers and students, and for the wider community as well, but they so often struggle to survive the impact of late stage capitalism.  And that was true even BEFORE the pandemic, when so many of our favorite local businesses closed down. There are not that many yoga studios that have been around for a long time, but we are VERY lucky today to hear from one of my old friends, Deb Flashenberg who has had a thriving locally owned yoga studio in New York City since 2002. AMAZING.  (and if you want to listen to my previous episodes with Deb please check out 31: How To Work With Pregnant Yoga Students and 104: Postnatal Considerations in Asana with Deb Flashenberg) In this episode you'll hear: what the vibes were like back in 2002 what changed in the landscape between 2002 and 2019 how and why Deb and the Prenatal Yoga Center survived COVID what the “comeback” post-COVID been like what thoughts and advice Deb has for people thinking about opening up a brick and mortar space now Learn More From Deb: Prenatal Yoga Center website Prenatnal Yoga Center on Instagram Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training

The Birthful Podcast | Talking with Pregnancy, Birth, Breastfeeding, Postpartum & Parenting Pros to Inform Your Intuition

It's common knowledge that walking, swimming, and doing prenatal yoga can all be super helpful during pregnancy, but what about running, barre, CrossFit, or weightlifting? Deb Flashenberg shares with Adriana how strength-focused exercising can lead to a too-tight core and pelvic floor that make for more difficult labors and harder postpartum recoveries. They explore how you can figure out if your pelvic floor is too tight and what you can do about it to have a more flowing birth.  Sponsor offers - TIME SENSITIVE! NEEDED - Get 20% off at ThisIsNeeded.com with code BIRTHFULHONEYLOVE - Get 20% off at HoneyLove.com/Birthful JENNI KAYNE - Get 15% off at JenniKayne.com/Birthful with code BIRTHFUL15ONESKIN - Get 15% off at https://www.OneSkin.co/ with code BIRTHFULAQUATRU - Get 20% off at AquaTru.com with code BIRTHFULHOMETHREADS - Go to HomeThreads.com/birthful to get a code for 15% off your first orderACORNS - Go to acorns.com/birthful to start investing in your futureGet the most out of this episode by checking out the resources, transcript, and links listed on its show notes page.  If you liked this episode, listen to our interview on Protecting Your Perineum and our episode on Vaginal Rehab. Deb Flashenberg, the founder of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC and host of the Yoga Birth Babies Podcast, brings valuable insights to the discussion on childbirth.  Together we discuss the dramatic identity shift that happens when you cross the threshold into parenthood. We also discuss the prenatal and birth experience. Emphasizing the importance of a mother's right to choose her birthing experience, she underscores the need for thorough preparation and the significance of having a well-prepared birthing team and advocate who is familiar with the mother's preferences. Additionally, she delves into the topic of pelvic floor health, highlighting the common issue of postpartum loss of bladder control and dispelling the notion that it is unavoidable.    IN THIS EPISODE: [3:13] Deb introduces herself and shares her professional background and training and how yoga inspires her life [7:30] Explains her roles as a doula and describes how the pelvic floor and the misconceptions surrounding this critical function [12:39] Deb discusses deciding what type of birthing experience you want and selecting a provider and team [16:16] Deb talks about what she would like to see in the future regarding birthing and things that need to change [22:42] Deb shares how the transition to a parent is a lifestyle, emotional and physical change  [28:14] Deb discusses her decision to have home birthing, and she outlines how socio-economics can affect the ability to choose your birthing vision [37:01] The different fears associated with the birthing experience are discussed [42:05] Deb defines what the family unit means to her   KEY TAKEAWAYS: You should never feel guilty about taking time for yoga. It isn't just exercise. It's a way to clear your mind so that you are present for the rest of the day.  Women who have problems with peeing when they laugh or sneeze have a weak pelvic floor, and it is false to think it's normal, and they have to live with it. Seek a pelvic therapist.  Medical staff need education about informed consent. Being in a hospital setting does not give someone a license to touch a patient without asking and being given permission.    RESOURCE LINKS: Stork'd - Facebook Stork'd - Instagram Stork'd - YouTube  Prenatal Yoga Center - Website Prenatal Yoga Center - Instagram   BIOGRAPHY:  Deb Flashenberg is the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. During pregnancy, the physical changes come in fast, and sometimes, furious! A great way to tune into these changes and create more body awareness is through “yoga asanas”, which are movements and poses from the ancient Indian tradition that promote physical & mental wellbeing. Prenatal yoga is becoming more popular these days as research and science points to the immense benefits of healthy and safe movements for birthing individuals. Not only can it help pregnant people throughout each trimester, but it can also assist in a smoother birth as well!In the show today, we have Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. Deb advocates for how yoga poses can help create more balance in the body so that birth flows better and there is less obstruction for the baby. She talks about “mock contractions” in her yoga classes that help her clients prepare for 60-seconds of physical and mental challenge during labor and delivery.Along with being a prenatal yoga teacher, Deb is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator, mother of two and self proclaimed "birth and anatomy geek”. Deb received her first vinyasa yoga certification with Shiva Rea and then added to her education by completing the OM Yoga advance yoga teacher training with Cyndi Lee. After the challenging birth of her first child, Deb became incredibly interested in pelvic health and has since earned her Pelvic Floor Yoga Certification with Leslie Howard. For the past 7 years, Deb has also greatly enjoyed being the host of the podcast,  Yoga | Birth | Babies, where she speaks with some of the world's leading experts in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenthood. Have you ever wondered how people who are incredibly dialed into their niche go there? This week I have an interview with my new friend Deb Flashenburg. Deb is the founder and owner of Prenatal Yoga Center in New York City. She highlights all her work as a pre and postnatal yoga teacher, and I think you will hear something in her voice that I found really striking. The tone she takes when she talks about the thing that lights her up the most. I want that for all of us, the idea that we can evolve--often by accident, into the profession or specialty that most fills our cup and allows us to show up more fully in the world. For Deb that is childbirth prep and education, for me, it is teaching the tenants of true self-care, but for you, that may be something else. We all have such interesting journeys in how we came to be as yoga professionals, and I hope it inspires you to listen to someone who is doing the work that feeds her soul as much as it inspired me to talk to her.KEY TAKEAWAYS:*Most of your favorite yoga pros who have a really specialized niche have gone on a journey to find that thing they are passionate about. Often times it comes by accident or by lucky happenstance that shifts in our brains to become *the* thing we want to share with others. *Once you learn a new skill or have some new knowledge, bring that info to your current students before you integrate that into new workshops or training. (this is something we will cover more in-depth during our professional development challenge) Use your current students and classes as a Petri dish to experiment and integrate new knowledge. *there is an aspect of performing to teaching yoga in front of people. if you have performing arts experience that can help you in your ability to capture your students' attention during classes, and even if you transition into working in the online space. If you've never had performing arts experience, it isn't too late! Take a class, join a troupe, and learn the skills of captivating a crowd. It can be invaluable. *teaching hybrid can be a challenge in training settings but can be possible to do it skillfully in group class settings. watch for more conversations about this on the podcast as we talk more about what it is to be the next generation of yoga professionals.Sunlight Streams, Our SponsorVirtual Retreat TicketsRESOURCESWorking In YogaWebsiteInstagramYoga Professional Development Free ChallengeDeb FlashenburgWebsiteInstagram

OTHERWORLD - Get 25% off at eatotherworld.com/birthful with promo code BIRTHFULOMGYES.COM - Get a special discount at OMGYES.com/birthfulDOCKATOT - Get 15% off at dockatot.com/birthful with promo code BIRTHFULSTORYWORTH - Get $10 off at storyworth.com/birthfulMOSSA - Get an extra 30-days on your free trial at mossaondemand.com with the code BIRTHFUL30Get the most out of this episode by checking out the resources, transcript, and links listed on its show notes page.  If you liked this episode, listen to our interview on Protecting Your Perineum and our episode on Vaginal Rehab. You need to feel heard, respected, and supported BEFORE your big day and be sure you and your support team are all on the same page. Now I feel it's too late to change!” Ideally, it's best to have a very important conversation with your doctor at the beginning of your pregnancy to make sure that the way he or she practices medicine matches up with the way you want to birth. If you're already into your pregnancy and a relationship with your doctor, be sure to ask these key questions at your next appointment! If you were doing yoga and cycling routinely while you're pregnant… that should be enough to prepare you physically for birth, right? In fact, it might not be enough and you could STILL feel out of balance physically when you go into labor. For today's guest, Deb Flashenberg, this was her story. She thought she had covered all the bases for smooth labor, but instead, she was in labor for hours and found that her baby was asynclitic  or not in line with her birth canal because her pelvic was out of balance. So, what IS balance when we're preparing for childbirth and labor? How can we achieve balance before we give birth? Deb teaches us the important key to finding balance during your pregnancy to help create less obstruction for baby's birth during labor. You will learn where to start and what not to forget when training to be a future mama.    Learn where to start and the important keys to finding balance during your pregnancy and create less obstruction for birth in this episode of the Mamas in Training Podcast.   FOLLOW on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mamasintrainingpod/ WRITE a Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1474667560?mt=2&ls=1 JOIN our Facebook Community: https://urlgeni.us/facebook/mamasintrainingpod   Click HERE for the Full Show Notes ___________________________________________________

How is yoga like birth? They both ask us to get uncomfortable and sit with that discomfort. How long can we sit with it? Where does our mind go when we get uncomfortable? How quickly do we reach for distraction? Yoga prepares us for birth not only physically but also by integrating the mind/body connection and strengthening our intuition and our physical body. Today, Deb Flashenberg of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC speaks with us about how to get safely uncomfortable and learn to use your body, breath and mind to get to the to other side, whether on your yoga mat or at your birth.  We also discuss postpartum recovery, and the importance of recovering physically from inside to outside, such as when it comes to diastasis recti and posture.  * * * * * * * * * *Connect with us on Instagram @DownToBirthShow, where we post new information daily related to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Can too much exercise during pregnancy become a detriment to your birth experience? We wouldn’t presume to give you a definitive answer to this question because frankly it’s not our place and we’re not the experts of your physical body, pregnancy, preferences or life experience. This is a question we explored with today’s guest Deb Flashenberg, founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in New York. Deb has her own experience and story around exercising during pregnancy, as well as practicing yoga consistently.  We talk a little bit about Deb’s journey into the work she’s doing now, her own process of exploring birth options, fears around pregnancy and childbirth and honoring motherhood. Deb’s story and message is a powerful one. For her, it’s about “trusting yourself, and being okay when you’re not perfect.” Also to find your personal voice, own your autonomy and proclaim “this is my life!” And you can access Deb and all her wisdom on her own podcast “Yoga Birth Babies” and through the Prenatal Yoga Center’s podcast. For a very long time I felt I “knew what to do” in many parts of my life... how I worked, how I drank, how I ate... and it wasn't until I came to the hard realization that I needed help that things changed. Let's zoom in on my health for a moment... because of all of the things I'd been going through until that point in my life, I had  accumulated a wealth of information. I'm a nerd you see, and when a topic interests me I become addicted. Wanting to know every detail I have to break the subject apart and put it back together in a way that makes sense to ME... and how come I didn't think of doing that for myself? To break myself apart into all the parts of me that were hurting, and put them back together to make sense… to ME. Healing, healing again with the healing! Well it never ends, it does get better but then we must begin again. And asking for help while humbling, it is life changing. When the ego becomes my friend and I can say - out loud - I actually have no clue what I'm doing… and can you PLEASE HELP ME. Today I speak with Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. She is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator and mother of two. After the challenging birth of her first child, Deb became incredibly interested in pelvic health and has since become and advocate for women's health during this incredible vulnerable time, when for some reason, after 9 months of high alert for the mother to be, once the baby comes the new mother somehow moves to the background… Deb has earned her Pelvic Floor Yoga Certification with Leslie Howard. For those who love podcasts, you can tune into Deb's podcast Yoga | Birth | Babies where she speaks with some of the world's leading experts in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenthood. A FAVORITE RITUAL Reading in bed at night is my all time favorite ritual. After a long day, I love slipping into my warm bed, pulling the covers up high and read a book. My husband and I usually go to bed around the same time, so it is nice to mark the end of our day not on our phones but quietly reading. A NON-NEGOTIABLE Exercise and yoga. These are non-negotiable and I find a way, even when traveling, to exercise and do yoga. While I do get sore and feel my body work, I don't consider yoga part of my exercise routine. For me, my "exercise" needs to be cardio and weights. My yoga practice is a time to step away from the outside world and explore how my body moves in different positions and deeply listen to what is happening and what is being asked of me in the poses. I have mainly been studying Iyengar yoga for the past 13 years and it is so detail oriented and specific, there really isn't space to mentally go elsewhere. I always feel like I was on a mental vacation when I emerge out of class. Now I feel it’s too late to change!” Ideally, it’s best to have a very important conversation with your doctor at the beginning of your pregnancy to make sure that the way he or she practices medicine matches up with the way you want to birth. If you’re already into your pregnancy and a relationship with your doctor, be sure to ask these key questions at your next appointment! In this episode of “Yoga | Birth | Babies,” I take off my interviewer hat and become the guest speaker!  For the past 17 years I have had the joy and honor of leading group yoga classes as well as teacher trainings.  In this podcast, I breakdown the principles from which I teach and train other teachers.  For those who are new to teaching or just students who want to better understand my methodology, I hope you enjoy! In this episode, I cover:  The importance of seeing your students! Learning from your best teachers, your students. The pros and cons of demonstrating. Know your demographic: who you are teaching and how they best learn. Don’t be afraid to correct and adjust a student Hand on adjustments- does everyone need to be adjusted? Know why you are touching a student – your hands should be giving information as to how to stabilize or go deeper in a pose. Don’t ignore the student who needs the most attention because you are overwhelmed by their poses. My personal pet peeve- massage or little creepy adjustments. Teach!  Don’t just recite memorized cues –  or shout out poses. Intelligent sequencing – how do poses relate to one another. Using music- it should add to the underlying flow and drive of the rhythm About Deb : Deb is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music with a degree in Musical Theater. She has spent most of her life performing and was introduced to yoga through a choreographer in 1997. After several years as a yoga student, she decided to continue her education and became certified as a Bikram Yoga instructor. In 2001 Deb headed out to Seattle to study with renowned prenatal yoga teacher Colette Crawford, R.N., at the Seattle Holistic Center. Deb has received certification for Vinyasa Yoga from Shiva Rea as well as completed the OM Yoga advanced teacher training with Cyndi Lee in 2004. Deb has also studied the Maternal Fitness Method with Julie Tupler. Deb currently studies with Cyndi Lee, Genevieve Kapular, and Carrie Owerko. After being witness to several “typical” hospital births, Deb felt it was important to move beyond the yoga room and be present in the birthing room. In 2003, Deb attended her first birth as a DONA certified labor support doula. In that short period of time, Deb has attended about 100 births. She is continuously in awe of the beauty and brilliance of birth. In 2006, Deb received her certification as a Lamaze® Certified Childbirth Educator. In September of 2007, Deb completed a Midwife Assistant Program with Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt and many of the other Farm Midwives at The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee. I am a prenatal yoga teacher, labor support doula and Lamaze teacher; I didn’t want my students to feel I disapproved of their birth plans based on the fact that I was preparing for a home birth. I came to my decision rather organically from attending hospital births for over ten years. I witnessed what hospitals had to offer to a low-risk woman and I did not want fight to have the birth I envisioned. Home birth is not for everyone. But it is an option for many. My hope for you, dear listener, is that your baby’s birth is infused with your voice. Although my two home births were challenging and forced me to dive to depths I did not know I had, I am grateful for having had the opportunity. I felt supported, heard, loved, and seen. I hope all birthing mothers can feel the same — no matter where they choose to birth.
