This is a juicy conversation with somatic educator Aimee Takaya to explore Hanna Somatics, a neuromuscular reeducation method for releasing unconscious muscle tension stored from life experiences. Aimee shares her journey from chronic pain as a Bikram yoga teacher to discovering a radically gentler approach to healing, and why she believes somatic modalities are meant to work together like ingredients in a recipe, rather than one-size-fits-all. We dig into the danger of dogma in healing spaces, and why integrating multiple somatic modalities leads to deeper transformation. In this episode, we explore why authentic healing requires embracing the full spectrum of human experience, the messy, the ugly, and the uncomfortable, rather than bypassing it.Learn more about Aimee and her upcoming retreats:Aimee Takaya is a Certified Hanna Somatic Educator, Somatic Yoga Teacher, Podcaster and Transformation Facilitator. Everyone tells you to move on.Stay busy. Stay productive. Get distracted.Nobody tells you that grief is not proof something went wrong.Nobody tells you that what feels like heartbreak is your nervous system going through actual physiological withdrawal — real, not metaphorical. And nobody tells you that the love you are grieving was never outside of you.It was always yours. In this raw and personal episode — recorded outside in her backyard from the middle of an experience, not the other side of it — Monica Bravo shares what she is learning inside grief right now. She reads words from her meditation teacher Peter that stopped her completely. She explains what is actually happening in your body during loss. My current perspective on eating disorders is that labeling food behaviors as a disorder has kept the field of food recovery distracted, continuing to focus on that food is the problem. Patterns of binge eating, restriction, yo yo dieting, food noise, and body image struggles need to be re-labeled as nervous system dysregulation or a trauma response. Food, for many, was never actually the problem, but it was the strategy to support the nervous system, to cultivate safety, and to produce specific neurotransmitters. The safer you feel in your body, the less you can experience food or body image impulses that are trying to facilitate safety. In this week's episode, I chat with Francesca Annenberg, Eating Disorder Recovery, Somatic Practitioner, and Psychedelic Integration Guide, about: How psychedelic assisted therapies can be utilized in food recoveryHow movement, sensory awareness and reconnecting with the body can transform food and body image issuesBuilding safety and trust in the bodyThe connection between food, relationships, and self worthYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/breakthrough-food-recovery-stucknessI truly believe somatic psychology has been the missing piece for many people struggling for decades with their food and body image. If you've ever felt like you know stress is impacting your health (but don't actually know what to do about it) this episode is for you.In this conversation, I'm joined by somatic practitioner, fitness coach, and functional nutrition specialist Joelle Reyes to unpack what somatics actually is, how stress lives in the body, and why “just managing stress better” often isn't enough. We dive into the nervous system from a physiology-first perspective, explaining why chronic stress keeps so many women stuck in symptoms like bloating, fatigue, anxiety, hormonal disruption, and stalled progress even when nutrition and training look solid on paper. This episode bridges the gap between what you intellectually understand about stress and what your body is actually experiencing, and explains how learning to close the stress loop can make everything feel easier — from digestion and recovery to emotional regulation and training results. In this episode, we cover:What somatics actually is (and what it's not)The difference between top-down (mind-based) and bottom-up (body-based) stress regulationWhy your body doesn't know the difference between work stress and physical dangerWhat it means to “close the stress loop” and why most people never doHow chronic fight-or-flight impacts digestion, hormones, recovery, and metabolismWhy you can't think your way out of nervous system dysregulationHow strength training, rest periods, and awareness can become somatic toolsPractical ways to start reconnecting with your body without doing anything extreme or uncomfortableWhy feeling your emotions isn't the same as being overwhelmed by themConnect with Joelle:Instagram: @joellereyesBeyond the Weights Coaching: @beyondtheweightscoachingPodcast: The Beyond the Weights Podcast
Life rarely changes all at once.More often, it shifts quietly. Our roles evolve, identities loosen, and the things that once defined you no longer quite fit.In this episode, we explore what happens when you find yourself asking: “Who am I now?” Whether through personal change, professional transitions, healing journeys, or moments of awakening that don't come with a clear roadmap.Together with our guest Dr. Katie T. Larson, Ph.D., a Hypnotherapist, Growth Coach, and Somatic Practitioner who works with Highly Sensitive People, Empaths, and Intuitives, this conversation weaves together lived experience, science, and spirituality to unpack how identity forms, why change can feel so destabilising, and how growth isn't about fixing yourself, but remembering who you are beneath the layers. You'll hear reflections on:Why change can feel uncomfortable even when it's necessaryThe difference between growth and constant self-improvementHow the body, mind, and nervous system respond to transitionLetting go of old labels, roles, and expectationsLearning to trust inner knowing during uncertain chaptersThis episode is an invitation to meet yourself where you are — not who you used to be, or who you think you should be — and to move through life's transitions with more compassion, curiosity, and trust.Dr. Katie T. We are so glad to welcome back Brittany Piper – speaker, author, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, and educator in sexual violence prevention and trauma recovery. In this episode, she is sharing her expertise of somatic healing, which starts with the body and can be life-changing for anyone with trauma, anxiety, and/or chronic stress, especially if traditional talk therapy isn't working. We discuss the science of the nervous system, learning the language of your body and how to regulate your stress responses, how to de-escalate your anxiety, and what a “trigger” actually is. We also discuss trauma and anxiety in relationships – talking to your partner about your needs, how you can be a helpful partner to someone who is struggling, co-regulating, and using a tool called “parts work” in a conflict. Before Brittany joins us, we're discussing wild AI text summaries, and unpacking a listener dilemma about a situationship with a colleague. Hope you enjoy! Your body has been speaking to you—whispering, nudging, sometimes even screaming. But have you been listening? When we disconnect, whether due to trauma, societal pressures, or daily stress, we override the signals that guide us toward pleasure, safety, and alignment. This disconnection often manifests as chronic pain, anxiety, digestive issues, or even numbness.Healing doesn't come from pushing harder—it comes from allowing space, feeling into the moment, and recognizing that slowing down is actually the fastest way to true transformation. In this week's episode, Angela and I, talk about...Is your body trying to tell you something? Why do so many of us feel disconnected? What if the key to healing isn't doing more, but doing less?Could slowing down actually get you where you want to go—faster? And many more! Juliet chats with Laura Phoenix, a writer, healer, yoga teacher, and somatic experiencing practitioner who is queer, neurodivergent, and traumatized. Their life's work is guiding people in yoga and bodywork for trauma recovery. Juliet & Laura discuss going beyond 'talk therapy' and learning to listen to our bodies that are always trying to tell us something. They connect over their shared humanity in "walking the walk" in their own mental health journeys. They dive into what somatic experiencing is and how it supplements talk therapy to help clients go deeper. It makes sense as we're WHOLE beings and can access "movement as a tool to broaden our awareness."There is lots to explore in the world of trauma and bodywork and Laura posits "isn't that where the medicine is?" regarding something specific in therapeutic work. Hi everyone, welcome back to The Chai on Life Podcast! It feels really good to say that after the holiday hiatus we've had. The holidays were so nice, and I feel so blessed that I was able to take that pause to fully focus on Hashem, my family and other connections in my life and now feel even more energized coming back to the podcast and all of the conversations and guests I have lined up for this year.Today's episode is on somatic healing with Rena Reiser. While we recorded this before the chagim, it feels like such an important one coming back into everything. We had time and space to turn off, to disconnect from technology and the news and reconnect to the things that matter most.More about Rena:Rena is a Polyvagal-Informed Focusing Trainer. She trains female leaders and healers to facilitate embodied change in the lives of those around them. In other words, Rena helps them understand how their clients' autonomic nervous systems impact their behaviors and emotions and how to use the Focusing technique to explore and shift these behaviors effectively.Rena has more than a decade of ongoing training including Focusing, Polyvagal Theory, Non-Violent Communication, and Inner Child/Parts work that she uses in her own life and that of her clients. Together they forge a uniquely empowering approach that allows clients to shift their behaviors at their source in a compassionate and embodied way.In this episode, she speaks about why we are so stressed and overwhelmed today, how we can get to a place of menuchas hanefesh, what menuchas hanefesh actually means, exercises we can do to achieve more calm right now, why that may be the prerequisite to other spiritual growth and so much more. She even goes through one of her modalities with me in real time so you can get an idea of how things work. It's Cheshvan, it's the time to put all of our spiritual growth into action and this episode is the perfect way to set the stage to get you into the best mental headspace in order to achieve your goals. To learn more about Rena, you can visit her website at renareiser.com. According to Men's Coach and Somatic Practitioner Sean Hotchkiss, everyone carries traumatic experiences with them from when they were young. These can be major emotional traumas like the divorce of your parents, or they can be micro traumas... but when they are left unresolved, they can shape who we are as adults (and parents), how we navigate life, and how we relate to others. In this episode honoring Mental Health Awareness Month, Sean Hotchkiss joins the conversation to discuss the real value of expressing anger and the benefits of unpacking our traumas of the past, all the way down to a cellular level.Episode 106 of Modern Dadhood, Adam and Marc open the show by welcoming new listeners, and giving shout-outs to Hark Audio, where Adam recently created his first Harklist, and Pocket Casts for generously highlighting Modern Dadhood in the Kids & Family category. The guys acknowledge Mental Health Awareness Month and introduce the guest into the conversation. Sean Hotchkiss is a Men's Coach, Somatic Practitioner, and Embodiment Guide. He works with men (many of whom are dads) to uncover and process traumas of their past. The conversation gets deep, covering topics like:• What it means to be a somatic practitioner and embodiment guide• What inspired Sean to transition from fashion writing to coaching• What are the most common sources of trauma for men?• How are repressed traumatic experiences accessed and processed?• Who can benefit from this kind of coaching?• And more!Marc rounds out the episode with a quick installment of Did I Just Say That Out Loud?LINKSSean Hotchkiss (official website)Sean Hotchkiss (Instagram)Caspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeModern Dadhood (website)AdamFlaherty.tvStuffed Animal (Marc's kids' music)MD (Instagram)MD (Facebook)MD (YouTube)MD (TikTok) #moderndadhood #fatherhood #parenthood #parenting #parentingpodcast #dadding #dadpodcast

— Kelsey's goal is to touch everyone with empathy and acceptance and teach everyone to accept and empower themselves without limitations and to help support them through their grievance. We don't need to be "love and light" or "fully healed" as we are all human and this is not sustainable.” Valeria interviews Kelsey Crystal — She is a Clairvoyant Medium and Somatic Practitioner based out of Dallas, Texas. Kelsey has been in business for four years and has clients in seven countries including Canada, Tanzania, Australia, Germany, and India. She discovered her abilities as a Clairvoyant Medium as a child and they became stronger the older she became and the more life experiences she endured. Kelsey takes a realistic, trauma-informed approach to her readings as she believes the way the messages are communicated to the client can make all the difference. She now combines her somatic work with her readings as she understands the nuance and overwhelm certain messages can elicit. Kelsey believes you can heal but can never be fully healed, and this is okay. She believes that through acceptance and finding the support you need, you can help heal yourself and find clarity, peace, and purpose, and that being fully healed should never be the goal as this is not realistic and creates shame surrounding one's trauma. Kelsey loves what she does and hopes to combine her readings and somatic work with her current studies in the near future. To learn more about Kelsey Crystal and her work, please visit: https://www.kelseycrystal.com/
