I have been an active participant in the yoga industry since the early 2000s, and I have never really understood how brick and mortar yoga studios, especially locally owned ones without corporate backing, made it work. I've been curious about it, and I have seen a few studios run incredibly well and last a long time, but we all know those are the outliers. These spaces are so important for us as teachers and students, and for the wider community as well, but they so often struggle to survive the impact of late stage capitalism. And that was true even BEFORE the pandemic, when so many of our favorite local businesses closed down. There are not that many yoga studios that have been around for a long time, but we are VERY lucky today to hear from one of my old friends, Deb Flashenberg who has had a thriving locally owned yoga studio in New York City since 2002. AMAZING. (and if you want to listen to my previous episodes with Deb please check out 31: How To Work With Pregnant Yoga Students and 104: Postnatal Considerations in Asana with Deb Flashenberg) In this episode you'll hear: what the vibes were like back in 2002 what changed in the landscape between 2002 and 2019 how and why Deb and the Prenatal Yoga Center survived COVID what the “comeback” post-COVID been like what thoughts and advice Deb has for people thinking about opening up a brick and mortar space now Learn More From Deb: Prenatal Yoga Center website Prenatnal Yoga Center on Instagram Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training
There's a saying that goes, “You don't know what you don't know,” and this is especially true when it comes to prepping for birth. If you aren't informed about the different options for your birth, then how can you be expected to make the most informed decisions in your birth! Today, we'll be diving into the key differences between a hospital-led childbirth education class and an independent-led childbirth education class. In this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I am joined by Ceridwen Morris. Ceridwen is an author, childbirth educator and doula who has supported thousands of expectant parents in New York City for over twenty years. She is the author of the forthcoming How to Give Birth (Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, 2025). Morris served on the board of The Childbirth Education Association of Metropolitan New York for five years, and ran the education program at Tribeca Pediatrics for ten years. She has taught at Real Birth, City Births, NYC Birth Prep and Prenatal Yoga Center. As you give this episode a listen, I hope it inspires you to bring questions to your care provider that explore how the birthing experience can be tailored to your preferences, versus you having to conform to hospital policies and protocols. One of the best things about founding and developing Prenatal Yoga Center has been getting the chance to foster and grow our perinatal community. Throughout the months during (and after) their pregnancy, our students and staff get to know each other through rich dialogue where we work through things that come up, connect on shared experiences, and learn from different ones! Being so invested in their journey leading up to birth, I always feel fortunate when I get to hear how baby came into the world. So today, we have one of my favorite episode types: a community birth story. On today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies, we have former prenatal student Alicia Krakauer. Alicia is a born and bred New Yorker, a musical theater actress, and singer songwriter. After finishing her graduate degree at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, she met her husband Liam back in 2014. They now live back in her hometown of NYC, and have just welcomed their first baby boy, Alastair, who was born at Lenox Hill just like his mommy! Alicia gets candid about the twists and turns that occurred in her birth and gives wonderful advice on how to process duality; allowing the space for more than one thing to be true, in both birth and postpartum. This is such an organic conversation, and I can't wait for you to hear it. Today we have a beautiful community birth story from Prenatal Yoga Center graduate, Courtney Vasserman! I personally loved this story and think it will be inspiring, relatable, and encouraging for our community to listen to. Courtney takes us through how she prepared for birth, including the methodology and tools she found incredibly impactful from classes at PYC, along with the coping skills she used and how those varied from early labor, to active labor, to transition. This story is absolutely beautiful, as Courtney speaks on the empowerment and trust she found in her body, yet honest in the sense that she doesn't shy away from describing her postpartum challenges- pelvic floor issues, breastfeeding struggles, and feelings of isolation. I appreciate how she opens the curtain to what a lot of people experience, and offers affirmation to those who need know they aren't alone and will get through it. Sharing her birth story today on Yoga | Birth | Babies, Prenatal Yoga Center graduate Courtney Vasserman grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and currently lives in New York, where she has worked as an advertising strategist since 2012. She lives in Manhattan with her husband Alex, her mini Bernedoodle Muffin, and now her 4.5 month old baby girl Sophie, who she is so in love with. She has always dreamed of being a mother. Courtney would like to offer the advice that it is okay to slow down, especially in the postpartum experience. She acknowledges that, especially for those like her who are career driven and type-A, it may be hard to learn and accept this concept in the first few months. However it is okay to spend five days in bed when you've just given birth! It's okay to ask someone else to hold the baby or not go on that mile walk. She reminds us to acknowledge the little accomplishments in those tender postpartum months. Courtney reassures that you don't need to be running around, and that slowing down will be better for both you and your family in the long-run. Deb Flashenberg, the founder of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC and host of the Yoga Birth Babies Podcast, brings valuable insights to the discussion on childbirth. Together we discuss the dramatic identity shift that happens when you cross the threshold into parenthood. We also discuss the prenatal and birth experience. Emphasizing the importance of a mother's right to choose her birthing experience, she underscores the need for thorough preparation and the significance of having a well-prepared birthing team and advocate who is familiar with the mother's preferences. Additionally, she delves into the topic of pelvic floor health, highlighting the common issue of postpartum loss of bladder control and dispelling the notion that it is unavoidable. IN THIS EPISODE: [3:13] Deb introduces herself and shares her professional background and training and how yoga inspires her life [7:30] Explains her roles as a doula and describes how the pelvic floor and the misconceptions surrounding this critical function [12:39] Deb discusses deciding what type of birthing experience you want and selecting a provider and team [16:16] Deb talks about what she would like to see in the future regarding birthing and things that need to change [22:42] Deb shares how the transition to a parent is a lifestyle, emotional and physical change [28:14] Deb discusses her decision to have home birthing, and she outlines how socio-economics can affect the ability to choose your birthing vision [37:01] The different fears associated with the birthing experience are discussed [42:05] Deb defines what the family unit means to her KEY TAKEAWAYS: You should never feel guilty about taking time for yoga. It isn't just exercise. It's a way to clear your mind so that you are present for the rest of the day. Women who have problems with peeing when they laugh or sneeze have a weak pelvic floor, and it is false to think it's normal, and they have to live with it. Seek a pelvic therapist. Medical staff need education about informed consent. Being in a hospital setting does not give someone a license to touch a patient without asking and being given permission. The truth is that 100 kegels a day will not physically heal the postpartum body. When it comes to postpartum recovery, the conventional medical world is seriously lacking in its understanding of the changes a woman's anatomy has gone through and what the body truly needs.Today's guest, Deb Flashenberg, founder and owner of Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC joins us to discuss the emotional and physical benefits of postnatal yoga. In today's episode, we're: Exploring the intense physiological changes the anatomy endures through pregnancy and then very suddenly through and after childbirth and the effects on the muscular structures within the core. Highlighting the importance of diaphragmatic breathing, understanding exactly how to do it, and emphasizing the holistic benefits of the breath component of a postnatal yoga practice. Discussing the emotional, mind-body connection of a yoga class and the importance of finding community during the postpartum healing period through shared experience and physical recovery. If you're in the years postpartum and wondering how to feel connected to your body again, this will get you pointed in the right direction. For the postpartum professionals, Deb will specifically address what you need to know about how to support moms in rehabilitating their core and what to suggest for physical recovery. During pregnancy, the physical changes come in fast, and sometimes, furious! A great way to tune into these changes and create more body awareness is through “yoga asanas”, which are movements and poses from the ancient Indian tradition that promote physical & mental wellbeing. Prenatal yoga is becoming more popular these days as research and science points to the immense benefits of healthy and safe movements for birthing individuals. Not only can it help pregnant people throughout each trimester, but it can also assist in a smoother birth as well!In the show today, we have Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. Deb advocates for how yoga poses can help create more balance in the body so that birth flows better and there is less obstruction for the baby. She talks about “mock contractions” in her yoga classes that help her clients prepare for 60-seconds of physical and mental challenge during labor and delivery.Along with being a prenatal yoga teacher, Deb is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator, mother of two and self proclaimed "birth and anatomy geek”. Deb received her first vinyasa yoga certification with Shiva Rea and then added to her education by completing the OM Yoga advance yoga teacher training with Cyndi Lee. After the challenging birth of her first child, Deb became incredibly interested in pelvic health and has since earned her Pelvic Floor Yoga Certification with Leslie Howard. For the past 7 years, Deb has also greatly enjoyed being the host of the podcast, Yoga | Birth | Babies, where she speaks with some of the world's leading experts in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenthood. Have you ever wondered how people who are incredibly dialed into their niche go there? This week I have an interview with my new friend Deb Flashenburg. Deb is the founder and owner of Prenatal Yoga Center in New York City. She highlights all her work as a pre and postnatal yoga teacher, and I think you will hear something in her voice that I found really striking. The tone she takes when she talks about the thing that lights her up the most. I want that for all of us, the idea that we can evolve--often by accident, into the profession or specialty that most fills our cup and allows us to show up more fully in the world. For Deb that is childbirth prep and education, for me, it is teaching the tenants of true self-care, but for you, that may be something else. We all have such interesting journeys in how we came to be as yoga professionals, and I hope it inspires you to listen to someone who is doing the work that feeds her soul as much as it inspired me to talk to her.KEY TAKEAWAYS:*Most of your favorite yoga pros who have a really specialized niche have gone on a journey to find that thing they are passionate about. Often times it comes by accident or by lucky happenstance that shifts in our brains to become *the* thing we want to share with others. *Once you learn a new skill or have some new knowledge, bring that info to your current students before you integrate that into new workshops or training. (this is something we will cover more in-depth during our professional development challenge) Use your current students and classes as a Petri dish to experiment and integrate new knowledge. *there is an aspect of performing to teaching yoga in front of people. if you have performing arts experience that can help you in your ability to capture your students' attention during classes, and even if you transition into working in the online space. If you've never had performing arts experience, it isn't too late! Take a class, join a troupe, and learn the skills of captivating a crowd. It can be invaluable. *teaching hybrid can be a challenge in training settings but can be possible to do it skillfully in group class settings. watch for more conversations about this on the podcast as we talk more about what it is to be the next generation of yoga professionals.Sunlight Streams, Our SponsorVirtual Retreat TicketsRESOURCESWorking In YogaWebsiteInstagramYoga Professional Development Free ChallengeDeb FlashenburgWebsiteInstagram

Today we have a very special episode, as I write that I'm realizing that I say that about almost every episode because they're all special to me! However, this is the kind of episode that I hold very dear, a community birth story. These episodes are truly special. I love hearing the stories from our community about their births and what makes today's extra extra special is that my guest Lauren Seidman has been with Prenatal Yoga Center for four births! Yes, she has four kids. Several years ago Lauren appeared on YBB about the birth of her second child and how she made some choices to go in a different direction for baby two. With baby four, she went in a totally different direction than she did for baby one, two, and three, which is what we're highlighting in today's episode. In today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies childbirth educator, doula, and mother of four Lauren Seidman talks about the very different direction she took having baby four. Based on the title, cat's out of the bag, Lauren decided after having three hospital births that she wanted to have a home birth. In our conversation not only does Lauren tell the beautiful birth story that she experienced she talks about what it was like when she told her friends and family “Hey, folks I am having a home birth,” some of the pushback that she got, and some of the misconceptions about home birth she dealt with. Listening to Lauren's birth story, I had a smile across my face the whole time. She paints the most beautiful picture of giving birth. All I could think about was the headlamp her midwife had on as she was in the dark bathroom birthing her child, it was really fantastic. So if you're curious about home birth or you just want to hear a really positive empowering birth story, you're going to enjoy hearing what Lauren has to say. Did you know that between one in four to one in six people in the perinatal world experience urinary leakage also known as incontinence? It's speculated to be much more common as these numbers are just from patients reporting their symptoms. Many people assume that after having a baby, they're going to pee a little when they sneeze, laugh, or go for a run. However, while this experience is common, this is not a normal function of the body. So many people just live with these symptoms that alter the quality of their life, but they don't have to. In today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies, I'd like to offer you some solutions to this problem. I brought on my friend Marianne Ryan PT OSC as the guest today. If you follow Prenatal Yoga Center on instagram you've likely seen many of our collaborative reels and instagram lives. Marianne is a wealth of knowledge. She's a physical therapist and board certified orthopedic clinical specialist practicing just a few doors down from my studio here in NYC. Marianne is also the author of the bestselling book Baby Bod. Marianne and I talk about the different types of incontinence, the role of kegels, how to resolve some of the issues and things that can make incontinence worse, and what a visit with a Pelvic Floor PT is like. it's a really great conversation. Please know that if you're having any sort of leakage, you deserve to live a better life than that. Enjoy this conversation. Deb Flashenberg is the founder and director of “Prenatal Yoga Center”, the first of its kind in New York City. Deb shares how her American mom Harriet rebuilt her life, showing up for her children after her husband passed away in an accident and leaving her a widow at 55. We learn from Harriet about being in (but not wallowing in) dark times; making your friends into your family; allowing yourself to enjoy life; and resilience and hard work. Today I have a unique podcast episode for you. I'm calling it birth not required. Many times people make the assumption that unless you've had a baby you should not be supporting pregnant folks. They wonder how someone could possibly relate to what a person feels when they're going through birth. Personally, I had Prenatal Yoga Center for many years before I had my first child. I was a labor support doula, prenatal yoga teacher, and a lamaze teacher. Sometimes people would say to me “but you're not going to understand what I'm going through.” And it was true. I might not have had their experience or know exactly what they were going through. However, even after I had two kids, I could only relate to what my experience was which may not be what they will experience. For today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies I have Jessica Lorion the host of Mamas In Training Podcast. Jessica has not had her own kids yet and she's very much a mama in training. She's learning about all the options that she's excited to perhaps participate in as she has her own kids. As she learns, she's also sharing this valuable information with her community. Though not a mama, she's supporting and helping parents train for their big excursion into parenthood and it's a really unique, wonderful, interesting, and rich conversation that I think you're going to get a lot out of. Deb Flashenberg is the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. She is a yoga teacher, labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator and has completed a midwifery assistant program at The Farm in Tennessee with Ina May Gaskin and The Farm midwives. On this episode of the Pure Nurture Podcast, Deb is sharing all about five essential questions to ask your care provider before birth. When you're in labor, it's not a good time to start negotiating your delivery wishes. You need to feel heard, respected, and supported BEFORE your big day and be sure you and your support team are all on the same page. In this episode, you'll hear about: Who is Deb Flashenberg & how she got into supporting pregnant women before she became a Mom (2:35) Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC Yoga | Birth | Babies Podcast Who's Afraid of the Pregnant Yogi? online program When you meet your doctor for the first time, ask these 5 key questions to make sure you're on the same page (5:36) Is it too late to switch care providers in your 3rd trimester? Now I feel it's too late to change!” Ideally, it's best to have a very important conversation with your doctor at the beginning of your pregnancy to make sure that the way he or she practices medicine matches up with the way you want to birth. If you're already into your pregnancy and a relationship with your doctor, be sure to ask these key questions at your next appointment! Prenatal yoga tones your body, especially the pelvic floor, hip, and abdominal core muscles, which are all needed for a powerful birth. But any woman who has birthed unhindered understands that we are stronger than we know."~Marcie Macari Our guest today, Deb Flashenberg is the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. How is yoga like birth? They both ask us to get uncomfortable and sit with that discomfort. How long can we sit with it? Where does our mind go when we get uncomfortable? How quickly do we reach for distraction? Yoga prepares us for birth not only physically but also by integrating the mind/body connection and strengthening our intuition and our physical body. Today, Deb Flashenberg of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC speaks with us about how to get safely uncomfortable and learn to use your body, breath and mind to get to the to other side, whether on your yoga mat or at your birth. We also discuss postpartum recovery, and the importance of recovering physically from inside to outside, such as when it comes to diastasis recti and posture. * * * * * * * * * *Connect with us on Instagram @DownToBirthShow, where we post new information daily related to pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. My guest today is Deb Flashenberg who owns the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. When the pandemic hit last year, Deb quickly pivoted to take her entire studio online. Which was no small feat, considering that Deb offers pre and post natal classes to pregnant people plus she runs a yoga teacher certification program. Now that the world is opening up again, Deb has been feeling really overwhelmed about how to bring her in person classes back without losing the progress she's made online, incurring a ton of extra expenses or burning herself out. Deb and I walked through a simple process to identify her clear priorities and immediate next steps so she can bring in person classes back without feeling stressed. Though Deb's business may not look like yours, if you feel stuck in analysis paralysis with so many things you want to do and no clear way to decide what to focus on, you'll get a ton of value from my conversation with Deb. “Beautiful things may be on the other side of fear and discomfort.” This is Mirror trainer, birth doula and prenatal yoga teacher Rachel Nicks' life philosophy. Hello all! Today's podcast is a fabulous interview with Caprice Abowitt. Caprice Abowitt is a certified yoga instructor, birth doula, childbirth educator and certified breastfeeding counselor. A classically trained dancer, Caprice fell in love with yoga after sustaining a back injury and now specializes in kids yoga, pre- and postnatal, and yoga for the pelvic floor. She is a senior teacher at the Prenatal Yoga Center, where she co-leads teacher training in New York City and along the East Coast in addition to directing Continuing Education Programs. Additionally, Caprice leads Childbirth Education for expecting parents as a founding instructor with Birth Smarter. She is based in Brooklyn, where she lives with her husband and son. I met Caprice when she co-led my prenatal yoga teacher training that I participated in. She was so knowledgable and kind, and had a fascinating background - I knew I wanted to have her on the podcast. The content of this interview was different than expected - as we are in the middle of COVID-19, there have been a lot of things that have changed, from our personal schedules to the policies for pregnant and birthing folks around the country. We talk about what drew Caprice to prenatal yoga, how being a doula informed her own birth experience, and why doulas - both in person and virtual - are incredibly important. You can learn more about Caprice by going to sagecaprice.com and be sure to check Birth Smarter and Prenatal Yoga Center for virtual classes with Caprice! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/samantha-attard/message
Hey there Mamas! I see you, I feel you and I understand your struggle. It’s my mission to help you drop the mom guilt, stop feeling overwhelmed, embrace your body, let go the ridiculous expectations you have, release shame and all the “shoulds” you have for yourself!! Join my guest, Amy Griffith, and I talk about how to surrender to YOUR UNIQUE journey of motherhood! Learn how to embrace the mess, ask for help (and not try to do everything!!) and take things one moment at a time. About Amy Griffith Amy grew up dancing since age 5 and has been fortunate to make a career out of it. After experiencing life as a dancer in New York City and learning more about determination, hope, struggle, and community than she ever thought she would, the transition to yoga seemed natural to her. Stepping onto her mat and out of the constant, electrifying buzz that is city life, gave her the opportunity to simply slow down. Yoga taught her how to breathe, how to really listen to her body and how to find more compassion for herself and for others. Amy received her certification through The Prenatal Yoga Center and learned just how strong women are. Amy believes that "Our bodies are designed to create life and birth can be positive!" She was inspired and determined to share this positivity with her students. Having experienced two home births and one hospital birth, she's witnessed the power of trusting her body. "I learned that there is a strength within us that is revealed during pregnancy, then birth, then motherhood." Can too much exercise during pregnancy become a detriment to your birth experience? We wouldn’t presume to give you a definitive answer to this question because frankly it’s not our place and we’re not the experts of your physical body, pregnancy, preferences or life experience. This is a question we explored with today’s guest Deb Flashenberg, founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in New York. Deb has her own experience and story around exercising during pregnancy, as well as practicing yoga consistently. We talk a little bit about Deb’s journey into the work she’s doing now, her own process of exploring birth options, fears around pregnancy and childbirth and honoring motherhood. Deb’s story and message is a powerful one. For her, it’s about “trusting yourself, and being okay when you’re not perfect.” Also to find your personal voice, own your autonomy and proclaim “this is my life!” And you can access Deb and all her wisdom on her own podcast “Yoga Birth Babies” and through the Prenatal Yoga Center’s podcast. For a very long time I felt I “knew what to do” in many parts of my life... how I worked, how I drank, how I ate... and it wasn't until I came to the hard realization that I needed help that things changed. Let's zoom in on my health for a moment... because of all of the things I'd been going through until that point in my life, I had accumulated a wealth of information. I'm a nerd you see, and when a topic interests me I become addicted. Wanting to know every detail I have to break the subject apart and put it back together in a way that makes sense to ME... and how come I didn't think of doing that for myself? To break myself apart into all the parts of me that were hurting, and put them back together to make sense… to ME. Healing, healing again with the healing! Well it never ends, it does get better but then we must begin again. And asking for help while humbling, it is life changing. When the ego becomes my friend and I can say - out loud - I actually have no clue what I'm doing… and can you PLEASE HELP ME. Today I speak with Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. She is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator and mother of two. After the challenging birth of her first child, Deb became incredibly interested in pelvic health and has since become and advocate for women's health during this incredible vulnerable time, when for some reason, after 9 months of high alert for the mother to be, once the baby comes the new mother somehow moves to the background… Deb has earned her Pelvic Floor Yoga Certification with Leslie Howard. For those who love podcasts, you can tune into Deb's podcast Yoga | Birth | Babies where she speaks with some of the world's leading experts in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenthood. A FAVORITE RITUAL Reading in bed at night is my all time favorite ritual. After a long day, I love slipping into my warm bed, pulling the covers up high and read a book. My husband and I usually go to bed around the same time, so it is nice to mark the end of our day not on our phones but quietly reading. A NON-NEGOTIABLE Exercise and yoga. These are non-negotiable and I find a way, even when traveling, to exercise and do yoga. While I do get sore and feel my body work, I don't consider yoga part of my exercise routine. For me, my "exercise" needs to be cardio and weights. My yoga practice is a time to step away from the outside world and explore how my body moves in different positions and deeply listen to what is happening and what is being asked of me in the poses. I have mainly been studying Iyengar yoga for the past 13 years and it is so detail oriented and specific, there really isn't space to mentally go elsewhere. I always feel like I was on a mental vacation when I emerge out of class. Now I feel it’s too late to change!” Ideally, it’s best to have a very important conversation with your doctor at the beginning of your pregnancy to make sure that the way he or she practices medicine matches up with the way you want to birth. If you’re already into your pregnancy and a relationship with your doctor, be sure to ask these key questions at your next appointment! One of the three pillars of Prenatal Yoga Center methodology is community, also knows as sangha. Feeling part of community, especially in such a transitional time like pregnancy and parenthood, can help assuage fears, feel supported and find a general camaraderie. In an effort to deepen our community connection, Yoga |Birth |Babies continues to share conversations and personal stories from our community members. In this episode of Yoga| Birth |Babies, we get to know one of our community members, Yali Szulanski. Yali bravely shares her personal struggles with a serious eating disorder and how she was able to keep it in check during her two pregnancies and postpartum. In this episode of “Yoga | Birth | Babies,” I take off my interviewer hat and become the guest speaker! For the past 17 years I have had the joy and honor of leading group yoga classes as well as teacher trainings. In this podcast, I breakdown the principles from which I teach and train other teachers. For those who are new to teaching or just students who want to better understand my methodology, I hope you enjoy! In this episode, I cover: The importance of seeing your students! Learning from your best teachers, your students. The pros and cons of demonstrating. Know your demographic: who you are teaching and how they best learn. Don’t be afraid to correct and adjust a student Hand on adjustments- does everyone need to be adjusted? Know why you are touching a student – your hands should be giving information as to how to stabilize or go deeper in a pose. Don’t ignore the student who needs the most attention because you are overwhelmed by their poses. My personal pet peeve- massage or little creepy adjustments. Teach! Don’t just recite memorized cues – or shout out poses. Intelligent sequencing – how do poses relate to one another. Using music- it should add to the underlying flow and drive of the rhythm About Deb : Deb is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music with a degree in Musical Theater. She has spent most of her life performing and was introduced to yoga through a choreographer in 1997. After several years as a yoga student, she decided to continue her education and became certified as a Bikram Yoga instructor. In 2001 Deb headed out to Seattle to study with renowned prenatal yoga teacher Colette Crawford, R.N., at the Seattle Holistic Center. Deb has received certification for Vinyasa Yoga from Shiva Rea as well as completed the OM Yoga advanced teacher training with Cyndi Lee in 2004. Deb has also studied the Maternal Fitness Method with Julie Tupler. Deb currently studies with Cyndi Lee, Genevieve Kapular, and Carrie Owerko. After being witness to several “typical” hospital births, Deb felt it was important to move beyond the yoga room and be present in the birthing room. In 2003, Deb attended her first birth as a DONA certified labor support doula. In that short period of time, Deb has attended about 100 births. She is continuously in awe of the beauty and brilliance of birth. In 2006, Deb received her certification as a Lamaze® Certified Childbirth Educator. In September of 2007, Deb completed a Midwife Assistant Program with Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt and many of the other Farm Midwives at The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee.
