The Government's cracking down on dog owners tying up pets for too long. MPI and SPCA Animal Welfare Inspectors will now be able to issue fines topping $1,000. The regulation targets dogs tethered in poor conditions with signs of mistreatment like excessive barking. SPCA Scientific Officer Dr Alison Vaughan told John MacDonald that the regulations won't be targeting people who tether their togs temporarily, such as when they pop out to the shops. She says the issue is prolonged tethering, sometimes known as life chaining, in which dogs are living out their whole lives on a chain. Host: John GscheidmeierGuest: Sophia from the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) of WaukeshaEpisode Overview:In this insightful episode of Wisconsin Real Estate Today, host John Gscheidmeier welcomes Sophia from HAWS to discuss the challenges and best practices of moving with pets. Whether planned or unexpected, relocation can be stressful for animals, and this episode provides expert advice on how to make the transition smoother for both pet owners and their furry companions.Key Takeaways:Understanding HAWS' Mission:The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) supports Waukesha County with pet adoptions, education programs, and community assistance. They aim to build a no-kill community and provide resources to help owners keep their pets.Challenges of Moving with Pets:Moving can be extremely stressful for animals, particularly dogs and cats, who rely on routine and familiar surroundings.Dogs may become anxious seeing moving boxes, new environments, and unfamiliar people.Essential Pre-Move Considerations:For Renters & Condo Buyers:Research pet policies before committing to a new lease or purchase. Some landlords and condominium associations have breed or weight restrictions.Preparing Your Pets for the Move:Gradually introduce moving boxes and changes to avoid overwhelming them.Create a safe space for pets on moving day to reduce stress.Moving Day Strategies:If possible, arrange for someone to watch your pet during the busiest parts of the move.Introduce pets to the new home gradually—let them explore room by room.Walk dogs around the property on a leash to establish boundaries.Recognizing and Managing Pet Stress:Signs of anxiety include panting, excessive licking, trembling, hiding, and avoiding eye contact.Consider consulting a veterinarian if your pet struggles with anxiety.Chewing and licking help produce dopamine, which can naturally calm pets.Post-Move Adjustments:Provide consistency with feeding, bathroom breaks, and bedtime routines.Check fences and yards for any escape points before letting pets roam freely.Be patient—adjusting to a new home takes time for pets.Microchipping & Identification:Ensure pets are microchipped and wear updated ID tags in case they get lost.Register pets with the local municipality after moving.Final Thoughts:Sophia and John emphasize the importance of preparation, patience, and using available resources to ensure a smooth transition for pets. What if a prevention of domestic violence was hiding in plain sight – on four legs? Research shows that in homes where abuse happens, pets are often victims too. So, could vets be the missing link in identifying and addressing domestic violence? Should they have the same mandatory reporting requirements as doctors and teachers? Today’s guest, Dr Lydia Marwood, knows just how intertwined abuse of animals and humans is. She’s a forensic veterinary pathologist regularly tasked with performing necropsies of animals or animal remains suspected to be victims of crime. Lydia led the investigation that unearthed a mass grave of 99 greyhounds in NSW’s Hunter Valley—a discovery that shook the state and contributed to a ban on greyhound racing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you’re toying with the idea of getting a pet, the first question to ask yourself is: Are you ready for the time, financial, and emotional commitment? Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah hunts for new perspectives on issues that matter to young people. On this episode of The Usual Place, host Natasha Ann Zachariah found out what blindspots first-time pet owners may have and what they should anticipate when getting a pet.Dibashini and TheAsianPawrent manager Jamie Wong dropped by to share their views about how to assess if you’re ready for a furry companion, the differences between adopting and buying pets, and the financial and emotional commitments of a pet owner. They also brought their furkids with them – Dibashini with her shiba inu, six-year-old Zuko, and Jamie with Yoko, a Bernedoodle (a mix of Bernese mountain dog and poodle), and Bowie, a kerry blue terrier pomsky. The starting point of a pawrent’s journey should start with deciding whether an animal’s personality, type and its age, among other factors, would be a good fit for the family, said Dibashini. Before anyone becomes a pet owner, they should do a lot of research about the breed or type of animal they want to adopt, and what their specific needs are, said Jamie. Drawing from his recent AJVR article, Simon offers a detailed exploration of how the Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines (PACV) survey tool was adapted to understand the hesitancy among pet owners. With over 20% of dog and cat owners showing reluctance to vaccinate, Simon underscores the vital role veterinarians have in safeguarding public health, urging them to build trust and communicate effectively about the risks and benefits. This episode shines a light on the parallels between human and pet vaccination, calling for more research and proactive engagement in this evolving field. Inspired by Simon's dedication and insights, our discussion reminds listeners of the importance of understanding vaccine hesitancy's broader impact on both pets and public safety. Magic meets science in this episode of Fur Real. Have you heard of the unicorns of the sea? Narwhals, with their iconic tusks, are as fascinating as they are mysterious. Joining us is Dr. Martin Nweeia, the leading expert on these Arctic creatures, to share incredible stories and surprising facts. Did you know their “horn” is actually a tooth that can grow up to ten feet long? Or that they can dive over 7,000 feet deep thanks to a special protein that supercharges their oxygen reserves? But narwhals aren't just science—they're steeped in legend. Inuit mythology tells of a woman who was pulled into the sea while hunting, and her braided hair became the tusk we see today. In medieval times, the tusk was believed to have magical powers, capable of curing poison and disease. Even Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea drew inspiration from these incredible animals. From myths to biology, Dr. Nweeia brings stories you won't want to miss. We're diving into a cutting-edge treatment for pets: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Did you know this therapy, often used by elite athletes to enhance recovery, is available for our four-legged friends too? But what exactly is HBOT, and what can it do for your pet? In simple terms, HBOT is a therapy where pets breathe in pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. This boost in oxygen saturates their red blood cells, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and providing relief from a variety of ailments. It's similar to the chambers divers use when they resurface too quickly and experience “the bends”—only, in this case, it's for our pets' recovery and well-being. Our guest, Teri Swanson, has years of experience with HBOT for animals and guides us through its benefits, explaining how it helps pets recover from injuries, surgeries, and even chronic conditions. If you've ever wondered about ways to enhance your pet's health, you won't want to miss this enlightening episode! www.furrealpodcast.com www.animalhyperbaricstx.com fb The Fur Real Podcast fb All Creatures Hyperbaric Care ig @thefurrealpodcast @markakyle tik tok @thefurrealpodcast Speical thanks to J Jig Cicero @jjigcicero for our music intro and outro..you rock!!!
