Clare pet owners are being urged to take proactive measures following an outbreak of a viral disease with a high mortality rate in the West of the county. It comes as an animal shelter in West Clare has been forced to close due to an outbreak of Panleucopaenia. The An Cat Dubh Sanctuary at Cloonlaheen, near Miltown Malbay has confirmed blood tests in the case of a number of deceased cats and kittens has detected the presence of Panleucopaenia. The Shelter has since closed, meaning it can't currently facilitate re-homing requests, admissions or rescues. It's founder Dr Rhona Lucas says they've implemented stringent infection controls in the wake of the incident and are working to determine the origin and extent of the outbreak. She says there's a huge body of work ahead. The airborne disease, which attacks white blood cells, is highly contagious and has a high mortality rate amongst kittens in particular. The symptoms include high fevers, profound lethargy, loss of appetite, severe vomiting and diarrhea. John Garrahy from Treaty Veterinary Clinic in Shannon says the disease can easily spread and is likely circulating in the local environment. He's told Clare FM, however, that hydration and anti-biotics are effective treatments and he's encouraging pet owners to consider a highly effective vaccine.

Clare's County Dog Warden is warning pet owners that high temperatures can prove fatal for dogs. Once temperatures rise above 20 degrees, conditions can quickly become dangerous, particularly during exercise, as dogs rely mainly on panting and releasing small amounts of heat through their paw pads to cool down. Travelling in cars is especially hazardous, as vehicles can quickly develop an oven-like atmosphere in warm weather. Clare's County Dog Warden is urging pet owners to leave dogs in a cool, well-ventilated area at home with access to plenty of water and to only walk them early in the morning or late at night.

This week, hosts Chris Anthony and Mary Oquendo dive deep into the art of choosing the right pet professional—whether it's a groomer or a boarding facility. Fresh off her vacation, Mary Oquendo shares her own pet boarding experiences, sparking a conversation about what matters most when entrusting the care of your furry friends. From behind-the-scenes stories at boarding facilities to insights on different grooming environments—shops, mobiles, house calls, and even spa-style salons—the team unpacks what pet owners should look for, what groomers need to consider about their clients, and how pricing, specialization, and pet personality play crucial roles. They touch on everything from certification and continuing education to room security and pet preferences, making sure both pet owners and professionals alike walk away with a checklist for finding the best care. So grab your travel mugs and tune in as the Traveling Groomers crew blends practical advice with real-world anecdotes, helping you make informed decisions for your beloved pets—plus a few laughs and digressions along the way.

To the neighbors in his exclusive New Jersey enclave, Dr. Jonathan Nyce was a "gentle giant" — a brilliant molecular biologist on the verge of a billion-dollar medical breakthrough. But behind the 21-room mansion and the 6,000 tulips in the drive, the "perfect" marriage he shared with his wife, Michelle, was a facade built on secrets, financial ruin, and a suffocating need for control. When Michelle's body was discovered in her Land Cruiser at the bottom of a frozen ravine on a cold January morning, it looked like a tragic accident. However, investigators soon found that the math didn't add up.Today's snack: Mackenzies Chocolates from Santa Cruz (thanks Molly!) Listen to part 2 on Patreon nowJoin our March Madness bracketsSources:"Collegeville Man Sentenced to 97 Months in Prison for Scheme to Sell Fraudulent Canine Cancer Drugs to Pet Owners." Send a textWorried pet parent meets phone tree is a stress spiral no one needs—so we put it to the test. We sat down with health services researcher Dr. Simon Haeder to unpack a large secret shopper study that mimicked real owners calling nearby clinics to book first-visit puppy care. Across six diverse states, the results upend common assumptions: two-thirds of callers landed an appointment, average waits hovered around six days, and typical drives were about 13 minutes. Even better, directory inaccuracies were rare. But averages aren't the whole story. A meaningful slice of callers never reached a human or bailed after long holds, and rural clients paid a bigger time tax with longer waits and drives. We zero in on the most fixable barriers—phones and scheduling—and outline practical steps clinics can take right now: enable online booking for routine visits, add an answering service or AI-assisted intake to capture messages reliably, and set clear callback expectations. These low-friction changes reduce abandonment, calm anxious owners, and free front-desk teams to focus on in-clinic care.We also zoom out to the big questions shaping veterinary access. How different are wait times for dentistry, oncology, and other specialties, especially outside metro hubs and away from teaching hospitals? What happens as pet insurance grows? And how do cats, horses, and rural communities fit into an access map still being drawn? You'll come away with data you can use, a checklist to improve client communication, and smart planning tips if you're welcoming a new pet.If this conversation helps you see veterinary access more clearly, subscribe, share with a fellow pet lover, and leave a quick review so others can find the show.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.05.0311INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ® OR AJVR ® ?
