Happy Valentine's Day week! We are so thankful for all of you and for your listening to our show! On today's episode, we are talking to Paul and Margaret Purifoy! Paul and Margaret are the parents of our very own Robin Wall. They have been married for almost 52 years, so we thought they would be good to talk to about making a marriage work. Paul and Margaret had a “frayed knot” when they were faced with the difficult decision of a next step for Margaret's mother, after she was widowed with Alzheimer's disease. They decided to take her in, and take care of her themselves; this was actually Paul's idea! This is the most precious couple and they share so much wisdom with us from their journey of a long and happy life together. Through the ups and downs of life they have managed to stay close to the Lord and close to each other. You will love listening to them and get so much out of it. Listen in. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..." Most of us are familiar with the first line of the Book of Genesis. And whether we believe it or not, most of us would agree that when taken literally, it's incompatible with the modern-day scientific worldview. But for the first time, Genesis has been analyzed by dozens of scientists and scholars who provide a reasonable case for Creation. Thomas Purifoy (writer, producer, and director of the film Is Genesis History?) explains. Greetings SOTAns, We hope you are all keeping well. In light of the recent social unrest in the Twin Cities, we are discussing a similar situation that happened in Los Angeles in 1965–The Watts Riots (aka the Watts Rebellion). Similarly to the unjust story of George Floyd in Minneapolis, these riots started with the arrest of a black man by a white officer and lead to community rebellion against systemic oppression against POC communities. The artist, Noah Purifoy, was a resident of Los Angeles and created sculptures out of the refuse from the riots. He later moved to Joshua Tree and spent the rest of his life creating assemblage art, resulting in his outdoor art museum, which we reviewed in the fall of 2018. We wanted to share more of his story, highlighting how his great art career was catalyzed by a striking social upheaval and how his legacy continues on through his art. Kit's family moved to the desert in the early 60's from Duarte, California. Kit was youngest of four kids, spread out over a number of years, so two of her siblings had already left home by the time the family made the move to the Mojave. Kit spent time riding horses barefoot and bareback and made a few bucks to spend on school clothes sweeping and washing curlers at Barbara's Beauty Salon (now known as 'that blue building' next to Ink & Steel in downtown Joshua Tree. After being voted 'Queen of Landers', Kit married at 17, had a child and moved to a local reservation with her husband with what by today's standards would be considered an early form of 'pre-fab housing'. Living for several years without running water or electricity still gives Kit an appreciation of the flip of a light switch. In this episode, Kit also talks about her appreciation for the Native American culture and what life on the reservation was like for her. Kit is a 'doer' and has had many jobs over her lifetime. Among other things, Kit has cleaned houses, been a firefighter, an ambulance driver, a meat cutter and a medical supplies driver. That last one, was the job that paved the way to her meeting renown environmental sculptor, Noah Purifoy and ultimately, apprenticing with him for many of his later years. It was Kit who encouraged Huell Howser of California Gold fame to come out and interview Noah for the program. With a home in 29Palms, Huell was also a lover of the desert. Kit is featured in the episode with Noah - watch it here. Kit has always been creative, but because she did not train in the 'fine art' of it, never really felt as if her work from found objects in the desert was truly art. It wasn't until stumbling upon Noah's place in north Joshua Tree that Kit really felt she was on to something with her found object, recycled material work and later, black-smithing. Though moving to the desert as a kid was a bit of a culture shock, Kit says she and her family immediately adapted and totally fell in love with the desert - she's been here going on 40 years. https://blogs.chapman.edu/huell-howser-archives/2001/10/24/noah-purifoy-visiting-939/

#12 Thomas Purifoy: 'Is Genesis History?'
In this 38-minute podcast, Joe Lewis shares with listeners Noah Purifoy (1917-2004) the man, the social worker, the Director of the Watts Towers and pioneering arts advocate and activist. Known for his work with the vernacular, read “junk”, which started in 1965 using debris leftover from the Watts Rebellion, Purifoy worked steadily out of Los Angeles, spending the last 15 years of his life in Joshua Tree. Purifoy took debris, mixed it with the vernacular and social issues, and created unique and powerful works, reverberating far beyond the desert. Lewis describes the influence that the Watts Rebellion had on Purifoy (min. 2), his standout pieces (min. 4), starting of the Foundation and his “studio” (min. 9) and the role of the natural elements in composing (and decomposing) his work. Joe then continues with how it worked in a “proper” museum, surround by white walls (min. 18), special memories (min. 22), his need to go out to Joshua Tree (min. 29) and how the Foundation deals with the elements to preserve his work and legacy. Feted by the art world, including at LACMA, Purifoy's art transcends what has been termed “Junk Dada” - there is something intensely relevant in our times about inequality, mass consumption and polarization. Feed your soul. Keep listening.

We then discuss the origins of the universe with director Thomas Purifoy. We talk about why it is important to learn about our origins, why it matters how life started, the dangerous of just believing "science" because science says so, and how Christians find truth without solely trying to justify the Bible.
