Wondering what all the social media chatter about genes and genetic variants (like MTHFR) really have to do with your child's health? On this episode of the Brainy Moms podcast, Dr. Amy and Sandy talk to functional medicine physician Dr. Randy James about the connections between our genes, our environment, and our overall wellbeing.Dr. James unpacks the philosophy of functional medicine, which seeks to understand the root causes of health issues rather than just masking symptoms. He explains why modern medicine often falls short when addressing chronic conditions or nebulous symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or general unwellness. The key difference? Functional medicine recognizes that every human is "infinitely biochemically unique" and requires a personalized approach.Dr. James breaks down how our genes and environment interact. He demystifies the often misunderstood MTHFR gene variant, which affects approximately 40% of the population to varying degrees. This genetic variation impacts methylation – a critical process involved in detoxification, neurotransmitter production, and cellular repair. Research has shown statistical associations between MTHFR variants and conditions like ADHD, autism, depression, and other mental health challenges. But here's where hope enters the picture: Dr. James emphasizes that genetic predispositions are not deterministic. Just as someone with fair skin doesn't panic about their increased skin cancer risk but instead adapts with sunscreen and protective clothing, understanding your genetic variants allows you to make targeted lifestyle modifications that can dramatically improve outcomes. From prioritizing organic foods to eating plenty of green vegetables rich in natural B vitamins, these evidence-based strategies can help support optimal methylation pathways.Parents will find particular value in Dr. James' practical advice for supporting children with genetic predispositions. He outlines developmental red flags to watch for, explains why "normal" symptoms might not be healthy, and offers guidance for navigating the complex world of nutrition and supplementation without becoming overwhelmed.Ready to take control of your family's health journey? I saw a video recently from Dr Mark Hyman, the most well known name in Functional Medicine. He was struggling with an aspect of his health, took a test and found he was missing a vital bacteria in his gut called akkermansia. He found no available supplement that provided it so he went to work doing the best he could with a mix of different foods. He was able to improve his levels. However the video I saw was with him and the founder of a biotech company, Pendulum, who is now providing the first akkermansia supplement. I right away asked my friend and doctor, Randy James about this, and he said yes, it's an exciting new product. So, I'm now taking it. On this show then, I've brought on Pendulum's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Adam Perlman. I've known of Dr Perlman before from his work as Director of Integrative Health and Wellbeing at Mayo Clinic, Florida, and as Associate Vice President for Health and Wellness for the Duke University Health System, overseeing Duke Integrative Medicine and the Duke Diet Center. I started off curious about Adam's personal health journey that led him from working as a medical doctor in traditional medicine to a functional and integrative medicine focus. We hit on some key issues around wellness in America, then I quizzed him about some new supplements that actress Halle Berry is saying are her anchors for health, and doctors I follow and respect like Mark Hyman and Peter Attia are attesting to. Along with my focus on akkermansia, Pendulum also has a GLP-1 probiotic that is having significant results with abating hunger, instead of the new pharma options. We actually didn't spend too much time on it but they are running ads for it on the show. As part of this show, Pendulum is offering 20% off your first probiotic membership, you can get it by ordering it at pendulumlife.com/drivesyou Sign up for a $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to sign up for your FREE 60-day trial. I hear from more and more people who just enjoy the journey of personal growth. They almost feel guilty about it, especially if they are mostly around others who seem content to just maintain life. They wonder why they have this insatiable appetite for more insight about themselves and life. Of course, I resonate with them. Over the past years I've realized that what I value most is not going after any specific goals, but just always having a goal to go after. My experience is most goals we achieve are anti-climactic if we think they alone will finally satisfy us. And again, I'm brought back to realizing what gives me the most fulfillment is having goals to go after, every day, all the time, so that…I enjoy the daily journey of life. It's the overall hope of discovering some new insight about myself or life that I can apply and find joy in. And then continue the next day on the same path to a new, inspiring destination. I wanted to talk more about it and invited my best friend, Randy James, to join me. Randy is a medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert who you can find at truelifemedicine.com. What drew me to him 15 years ago, I now realize, was how we resonated in a desire to pursue personal growth. Randy is insatiable with new information and always excited to talk about a new idea and concept. Though not just for the sake of the idea. He's excited about a new insight he can apply to his own life or the life of a patient, his family, or his friends. Like me. Following is our conversation about this concept of growth and the joy in the growth, even more than the goal. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Not everyone is driven to be an entrepreneur, but sometimes we may need to go down this path in order to have freedom to do what we think is best. My best friend, Randy James, is a medical doctor. When he started he made a pact with God that he'd be a doctor, but he never wanted to be a businessman. Following is a story of why he reluctantly went into business for himself, and now testifies that having to learn the business side of his vocation has helped him be a better doctor and serve his patients better. I have always loved being an entrepreneur, but I'm not a naturally gifted businessman overall. I'm not great at running a business, I just want to do my art, and I feel many of you will resonate with just that. There is a product or service or message you care deeply about, and don't see how to deliver through traditional channels…as an employee. So you're looking to set out as an entrepreneur, or you already have. I recorded this show to commiserate with you, and give you some inspiration and ideas on reconciling what you do and how you do it. I also ask for your grace, we had an audio malfunction we totally missed, and Randy's mic wasn't working. Our audio team worked to make things as clear as possible, but you'll notice a stark difference in the audio quality when he talks. I think you'll find Randy's story worth the slight audio error. Clinically we hear about gut health and the microbiome. I'm not a doctor. So in layman's terms, the idea is, we eat food. We chew it up and swallow and it goes down into our system. The processing plant. How is the processing plant doing? Is it able to break things down? Get out nutrients? Turn things into energy and vitality? I'm with Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine practitioner to talk about what happens, what we want to happen, and how to make it happen so that we are getting the necessary benefits from our food. Recovering from injury is a popular topic, whether it's a broken bone, a soft tissue sprain, pull, or tear, or a severe illness or disease. Yet as you'll hear in this episode, we hit on the reality that living itself is injury. Every morning you wake up, hopefully having gotten quality sleep that was healing. Let's say you start at 100%, which is impossible, but whatever level you start out, from that point on you are depleting yourself, physically and mentally. You spend the day wearing down your resources, which is why by nighttime, we are tired. It's our body saying, “Hey, I've used up enough resources I need rest and recovery to recharge!” If you have a specific, acute injury from an accident or illness, your body needs even more recovery. Thus the things we think to do to recover from a big injury, don't differ from things we want to address every day for our recovery. It's a valuable paradigm shift to realize the reality of our existence as it pertains to our overall, daily capacity and ability. I'm with Randy James, medical doctor and functional medicine expert to talk about your health, which drives all you do. Find him at truelifemedicine.com Got a comment or question about an episode? In this episode we talk about play. Non-productive activities, in essence, though what you'll find is these activities greatly support our overall productivity. I spent a lot of years with no room for play. I saw it as unproductive. It took a while to notice the joy my friends who played had, and how it seemed to coincide with their success everywhere else. It can be a hard issue for the aspiring and success oriented individual, as the topic of play and fun can sound like a frivolity or luxury and lacks the valor of just pushing toward the big goal. And we all know some people who mainly play and don't get much done. But you're not at risk of this. You are likely, very productive. Maybe too productive. And you need some play to inspire and invigorate and rejuvenate you. Some people used to view sleep as a luxury too, and bra about getting 4 hours of sleep. We know better now and I'm so grateful that I find people bragging about getting a solid 8 hours or more! Among the truly successful I see a priority given to play. Budgeting time for non-productive work that gives our emotions a break and our inspiration a boost. In this episode I'm joined by my great friend Randy James, medical doctor and functional medicine expert, as we dig into the concept. Got a comment or question about an episode? In this episode we want to gain clarity on what we are in fact, becoming. You are working to grow, which means you are looking to become…something. Something more, but what? If you don't have a clear destination in mind, you are likely to wander. Imagine going out in your car to travel, but without a clear place to go. “I'm just traveling!” But we often do this in our growth. “I'm just seeking growth!” Well, to what end? Who are you striving to become. Another aspect is the reality that you are in fact becoming…something. Every day. You are evolving or devolving or remaining stagnant, which is still a becoming. “Yeah, over time, Arnold just became…stagnant. Stuck.” We happen to our transformation or our transformation happens to us. I'm joined by Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine expert and one of my favorite allies in striving to grow and become. This is a candid discussion to humbly look at our propensities as humans and the challenge this reality of becoming can be even for aspiring people. Got a comment or question about an episode? In this episode look at our physical wellness, as our bodies are the vehicle that houses everything we drive toward. Few things drive our appetites like…sugar. We see sugar as a gift and honor it like we honor wine. And like wine, it's probably not best to have it in excess. For the greater span of time, humans went most of their lives with little to no sugar outside of the occasional fruit when it was in season. In America it wasn't until around 1619 when sugarcane came on the scene. Today sugar is added to everything. The American Heart Association recommends up to 25 grams, or 6 teaspoons per day. Though the average American consumes 88 grams, about 22 teaspoons a day. What's best for our physical health? Today, 1 in every 3 Americans has diabetes or prediabetes. Another way to look at it, around 122 million Americans have a sugar related disorder, while only 14 million have an alcohol disorder. We are sicker and bigger than ever and sugar is the primary culprit. In this episode I'm joined by Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert and we talk about how to best view and manage sugar. Something again, we love too! And work to manage in regards to our wellness desires. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. As your body is the physical vehicle for all you do here on earth, this episode is about having it in great working order. As we continue to look at the best foods to fuel our bodies, we now turn to fruit. Where should it factor into your diet? Should you have any? A little or a lot? And then, which fruits are the most beneficial to your wellness? It seems so basic, but these types of questions on food categories and the value of different varieties can be stumbling blocks in our pursuit of health. I'm joined by Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert and I talk through whether we are generally best to eat fruit or not, and if so, which fruits and how much. Welcome, I'm Kevin Miller, your host, guide and fellow traveler as we unearth what drives us. When we know what drives us and why, we get where we want to go. Our bodies drive everything we do, so in an effort to get them in the best shape possible, in this episode we are talking about food. I recently covered the best meats. Here, the best grains. With the huge focus on gluten and inflammation you hear more and more about being grain free and that all grain and carbs are the enemy. Yet as Dan Buettner covers in the Blue Zones which showcase the healthiest places in the world, most of them have some grains as a dietary staple. Overall, yes, we're best to minimize grains. Just like meat. A great plate of food would have veggies as half or more of the meal and not a side item. In America we have made a staple of big portions of grains at every meal. Who didn't grow up having bread with pretty much every meal? And we generally choose the least nutrient dense, life-giving options. I'm with Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert to discuss what grains will serve you best. Our bodies drive everything we do, so in an effort to get them in the best shape possible, in this episode we are talking about meat. Eating meat or not is one issue, but if you choose to, are they all equal? Absolutely not. Again, we're talking about food, the items we ingest every day that are intended to build, repair, heal, and help us flourish. So if the next meal has meat, does it contain the natural ingredients it was intended to? Ingredients that give us life? Or is it made up of synthetic hormones, antibiotics, waste products, and an overall soup of refuse and pharmaceuticals? It matters, hugely. The type of meat to a degree, but moreso, the lifestyle of the animal it came from. Medical doctor and Function Medicine expert Randy James and I walk through meat to help you understand what will best support your drive. Your body is the vehicle for all your drive, so we seek to strengthen it for you in this episode. We live in a culture where many people don't eat many vegetables, and if they do, they gravitate towards the least beneficial. Food is your best medicine, so here is your guide to getting the most out of your veggies. And the goal? Make veggies half or more of every meal. Not the side. Meat and grains and other are your side. But to vegetables, not all are created equal. In a recent episode, Dr James quipped about his kids going for the most sugar-full veggies like carrots and snap peas and it sparked a listener to ask which veggies were in fact, “better”. We intended to discuss the “better” foods in five categories but found just getting through veggies was a complete episode. To give you some Cliff's Notes, his “top tier” picks for the most nutrient dense veggies were broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, spinach, cabbage (especially purple) and kale. Tier two? Peas, corn, carrots and okra. Why? You'll serve yourself well to understand, so in this episode Dr Randy James and I break it down. Quick call out to my new friend, Kathy. She's been a listener for years, loves these health focused shows I do with Dr James, and this week surprised me by showing up at his practice, True Life Medicine, here in Colorado. She flew in to become a patient.. I came out to see someone in the foyer and she recognized my voice, not realizing my studio is in his office building. We had a great visit. You can check out what Randy can offer you at truelifemedicine.com. Got any questions? Hit me up, kevin@kevinmiller.co. OK, next up, Randy and I give you the lowdown on the best veggies. You are driven by your values and today we discuss the value of feeling good, and we look at sleep. Think about this, everyday we must eat. But we can eat junk food and feel like crap, or we can eat wonderful, healthy food and feel great. It's the same with sleep. Everyday we sleep, and we can do some things and get horrid, non-rejuvenating sleep, or we can do other things and get great, recharging and refreshing sleep. I've learned I can't always judge my sleep on how I think I slept. Sometimes I'm out like a light, wake in the morning feeling ok, only to crash later in the day. And other times where I feel I tossed and turned some, I wasn't ready to wake up when I did, but I had good energy for the day. This show is about the tangible habits we can employ to give ourselves a better chance of getting quality sleep. I'm talking with medical doctor, functional medicine expert and my close friend, Randy James. As we unpacked good sleep habits we were a bit surprised to realize just how many integers there are regarding our sleep. From the food we eat prior to sleep, to our mattress, to light and sound and even the topic of our last waking thought. What we thought would be a quick run through of our list turned into a much longer discussion and resulted in even us realizing just how many things can influence our sleep quality Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! This is a What Drives Your Health episode where we look to support your body, which everything you drive is dependent on. Let's talk about why calories in vs calories burned doesn't always work. You've likely been in a place of feeling like you are eating clean, not eating that much, you are exercising well, but still not losing weight, or not losing enough weight. You may even be gaining weight. In this episode we hit the reality that a calorie isn't a calorie, but even further, any certain calorie may be fine for one person and not so much for another. The weight loss industry wants to give pat answers that everyone can simply follow, but they just don't exist. Ultimately you must have some understanding of food and calories and your personal makeup in order to find a nutritional and exercise plan that gives you the results you desire. In this episode I'm joined by my friend, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert Randy James and we strive to help you get a grasp on finding your ideal plan. This is a What Drives Your Health episode and we look at how choice pollution is feeding into your anxiety. This is not what we want fueling our drive. When you are faced with too many choices, you are inclined to do…nothing. Or if you're like me you just make a rash decision just so you can move on. Taking time to figure out the best decision can cause stress and from this we are generally suffering from decision fatigue. Now think about the reality of life today that always has an infinite amount of choices for anything at any given moment. It produces a culture of anxiety. We're calling it “choice pollution” and in this episode Dr Randy James of True Life Medicine and I talk about the problem, the solution and the anti anxiety drugs being prescribed for it. This is our What Drives Your Health episode, because the physical body of you is the vehicle for everything you drive towards! If it's compromised, so are all your efforts. Here we're looking at IBS, SIBO & How To Poop More Frequently & Effectively. I'd say that is not a sexy topic, but being bloated, gassy and constipated is definitely not sexy and we want to help. IBS, irritable bowel syndrome, affects nearly everyone to some degree, even those living a very clean, healthy and active lifestyle. Diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, abdominal aches and pains and general discomfort down there should not be “normal” and there is hope to address it. I've had my own bouts with these issues, so I really feel your pain. When you do a search in Google and type in, “How often should you…” the number one search is “wash your hair”, number two is “poop”. You are not alone. In this episode Dr Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and I talk candidly about IBS, SIBO, poop and more. Quick note…hearing all the incredible messages on the What Drives You podcast is powerful. To help it really take root in your life, I invite you to join us in the Drive Tribe online community and join the daily discussions where we go deeper, together, on all the show topics. This community has been a long time coming, and the time is now. We give a primary focus to what is driving us, and what is driving others…to us. We want to influence others with how we feel we can help them. We want to help you drive your influence so you are impacting other people for good. High blood pressure medications have become one of the most common prescriptions in our culture. Current stats put about 50% of Americans on high blood pressure, with people needing it at younger ages all the time. Like many ailments we accept this as a norm and taking blood pressure meds is like having your morning coffee or tea, just a norm. But at the core, there is a reason our blood pressure is high! High blood pressure is a symptom of the body not doing what it's supposed to do. Or in truth, the body is trying, but it can't overcome…something we are doing to it or not doing for it. There are little side effects to the medication itself, but what else is going on? Being overweight is the primary correlation but then you have seemingly fit people like actor Will Smith who was on them too. How does that happen? I'm joined by Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert. The culture talks about “life span”, which is how long we live from the day we are born until the day our heart stops beating. Health span however, is how long you are well and able. Do you care more about living to be 100, in a nursing home, in a wheelchair, hooked up to oxygen, wearing diapers, and completely devoid of any conscious thought, or being active and able in body, mind, and spirit, well into your sixties, seventies, or eighties? Dr Randy James and I recorded this segment following our weekly, Friday guys gathering where we share our lives together. One of the guys had just spent time with his family and witnessing his elderly mother who could not get around much and was not able to join the family in much of any activity other than eating. While we want to be sensitive, he was just aware she has peers who are fully capable in body and mind and he's aware of her lifestyle choices that have not helped the disability she finds herself in. Randy and I have a candid and I hope compassionate discussion on this and it brings to light what our goals are, and how our daily actions are supporting these goals. This is a What Drives Your Health episode. Your health comes from what you do and don't eat, and what exercise you do and don't do. And good sleep. Basically your lifestyle. Add to that your genetics and we have it pretty much covered, right? But what about your thinking? Not your mental state, but your actual thinking? Can you think yourself healthy? Or unhealthy? I'm with my great friend, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and he and I have been studying this concept for a long time. A book we read cites a study where people worked out their biceps, with dumbbells. But half of the test subjects were tasked with just thinking about growing their bicep. The first group using dumbbells, grew their biceps. They measured bigger. The second group who just thought about it, also, got bigger biceps. Not as much as the actual dumbbell lifters, but take the measuring tape, and sure enough...they got bigger biceps just from thinking about it. Now take that to your health. As you'll hear in this show, I talk about an injury I have. The only mental input I give it is...negative. I think about the pain and the lack. According to this study I could be helping heal it with my thoughts, but currently I'm making it worse. Let's talk about how to use some thinking exercises to increase our health. This is a What Drives Your Health episode and we're talking about your thyroid. Your thyroid regulates much of your body, such as metabolism, growth and development. We as a culture are having more and more thyroid dysregulation. In this episode we dig into what problems thyroid dysregulation causes within us so you can hopefully ascertain if you are being negatively affected. We cover how traditional medicine treats it, and then of course how my co host, Dr Randy James, would treat it from a Functional Medicine perspective, even down to nutritional supplements and recommended dosages. Here in America many people suffer from hypo and hyper - thyroidism, though hypo is most common and the result is feeling the brakes are on in your physical health and you are pushing forward and feeling like you're in quicksand. Let's see if we can shed some light on the issue. Everything in our lives is speeding up. Technology and artificial intelligence and deliveries and...boom. We can fill every second with something new and interesting and the marketplace is focused on delivering us instantaneous gratification in any way possible. Compared to our grandparents and especially great-grandparents, the speed and convenience of life and survival is supersonic. We can do in one hour, maybe even 20 minutes, what it took them all day to achieve. So how is it working for us? Are we awash in free time and leisure? Are we happier and healthier and more at peace than ever? Exuding so much joy as a result of all the privilege we have? You know the answer. We as a culture are sicker, sadder, and more anxious than ever. But the speed and convenience is not bad, only our management of it. I can have a burger for a dollar in a minute at a drive-through, or have one that costs $10 and an hour over my grill. Which will serve me better? Dr Randy James and I talk through this issue, not with certainty, but with grappling. In this episode I wrap up our series on Physical Transformation with my Big ideas, Big Takeaways and Big Actions. I began our series with a conversation with celebrity trainer Don Saladino who regularly trains the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Hugh Jackman. Instead of mere tips and tricks and hacks he gave the hardcore lesson on mindset and how it's more about how we think than merely how we train. I just watched the new Christmas movie starring Ryan Reynolds, Spirited, with my kids and had fun showing off pics of Ryan with Don, and me…with Don. And I'm actually starting Don's program, The Long Game, to help me get back in shape after 10 weeks out due to injury. You can get 20% off any of Don's ePrograms at donsaladino.com and use code Drive. In part 3 I continued the conversation on Physical Transformation with my pal, medical doctor and Functional Medicine guru Randy James, and he shared from his perspective on sitting with patients every day, who are looking for physical transformation, though instead of getting shredded to play Deadpool like Ryan, they are mostly trying to alleviate chronic pains and illness and gain back their physical capacity. From these conversations and my own life experience with physical transformations, I've pulled out some primary highlights for achievable and sustainable physical transformation. We continue our series on Physical Transformation. I kicked us off with celebrity coach Don Saladino who is well known as trainer of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Emily Blunt, Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman and more. I appreciate he gets paid big bucks for results. Period. So he can't sugarcoat or minimize what it takes to transform a body. Which is…hard, and it takes far more than just giving direction on how to lift weights, run, and eat. So I asked my friend, medical doctor and functional medicine expert, Randy James, to join me in this discussion. He, like Don, is paid out of pocket for transformation. While Don often has people coming to him to change their physical appearance, Randy generally has people coming to him to change how they feel physically. But I think the psychology is the same. It means different goals, different habits, and ultimately different beliefs about yourself. This is our What Drives Your Health show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The vehicle that drives all we do. In this episode I wanted to hear from people who have made significant health improvements and what their catalyst was. I asked listeners to share their health accomplishments. I asked to hear from people who were out of shape and possibly ill...and got fit and healthy, and what was the catalyst for them. What triggered them to finally make change and commit to it? My cohost is Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and my dear friend. Dr James and I talked through comments that included, chronic back pain and back injury, weight gain due to health problems and medication, committing to health due to responsibility to family, and not wanting to be a future burden to family, spinal surgery recovery, and family history of heart attacks. The discussion was rich on what caused these folks to take big action on their health and we didn't get to half the responses and will continue in the next What Drives Your Health episode. This should give many of you some significant inspiration and equipping to make any big changes you may be looking for in your own health and wellness journey. There is a culprit draining your energy. Anxiety. And here's the deal, you do have anxiety. You are on the spectrum. We all are. Our effort is to help you understand this so you can work to mitigate it. In our culture today we know pesticides have gotten into all our foods. We can't escape it, it permeates our entire country at this point. Same with anxiety. We live amongst it and can't avoid it, even if we don't feel we worry about much. Even as we've normalized anxiety. We're finding people are so often feeling drained by day's end and they aren't aware of the role the anxiety of our culture plays in our lives. I'm with my Peak Wellness co-host, Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine Expert, and we're going to get anxiety on the table and discuss how to mitigate it. This is our Peak Wellness show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The vehicle that drives all we do. In this episode…we address how to run. Specifically, how to run without injury and keep running into old age. We're advocating running simply because it's one of the easiest exercises that can be done nearly anywhere and anytime with little to no equipment required. So many people who would run however, do not. Even those who used to at an elite level. The reason? Aches and pains. We've gotten to where it's the norm to stop running earlier in life and try to find an exercise with less impact. I had that as my own story. I did a 2 hour run on Father's Day about xis years ago. It was glorious. Except for the pain in my hip and back. Then my co host Dr Randy James and I got a hold of some new information. Today we both run pain free. It's not a guarantee for you, but it sure is a great hope and opportunity for all those who would like to continue, or start running. This is our Peak Wellness show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The vehicle that drives all we do. In this episode, How To Upgrade Your Personal OS. When your phone or computer is always on, always running multiple programs, it gets bogged down. We often power it down and reboot. As humans we get this. We go through a day and by the end, we need relief and rest. We kick off the shoes, get some food, maybe watch a show, then sleep. But now think about upgrading the operating system on your phone. That's different. You shut down every program, power the phone completely down, then allow the operating system to be updated and upgraded. It may take a while and require some input along the way to set things up correctly. When we keep running the same programs of our life without ever taking a break to allow new information to come in and take root, we miss the possibility of a real upgrade. In this episode Dr Randy James and I talk about the primary roles in our lives and the concept of backing off from them for a time. A day. A week. Taking in new information and taking time to consider our true desires. Our authentic drive. Then coming back to the world with an upgrade. Think about this in terms of your job. The work you do. Being a spouse. A parent. Being a homeowner and parent who is continually keeping up with everything. How can you take a step back, so you can resume with an upgraded you? I wrap the series on Heal Thy Self. I began with Dr. Bradley Nelson, veteran holistic physician and one of the world's foremost experts on natural methods of achieving wellness. He's author of the best-selling book "The Emotion Code" which provides step-by-step instructions for working with the body's energy and healing power. His new book is, “The Body Code: Unlocking Your Body's Ability to Heal Itself,” and it is was our muse for this series. The concept of tapping into your subconscious to guide you in how to heal yourself, is initially a stretch for me. But there is just so much of it that makes sense and I have too many people I respect who attest to finding healing through these methods, so I wanted to being the concepts to us all. I invited my close friend Randy James to discuss this topic with me in part three. Randy is a medical doctor and functional medicine expert, and he too felt that while some of the concept is hard to embrace, there is just so much that lines up about the power of our own psyche and the lack of addressing emotional damage in any other way. Here I strive to address some highlights and bring in some issues we didn't even address in the previous three episodes. We continue this series on Heal Thy Self that we kicked off with veteran holistic physician Dr. Bradley Nelson. His new book is, “The Body Code: Unlocking Your Body's Ability to Heal Itself,” and it is our muse for this discussion. The methods he talks about have some basis in science but require…some faith and mind expanding. I found enough people testifying to Dr Nelson and his concepts that I wanted to discuss it more, and when I find people who are influencing lots of people, and people I respect, I want to know more. This is an exploration of possibility. It doesn't mean I understand and follow it all. To help, I have here with me today Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and my dear friend. We're going to talk about the concept, respectfully, candidly and with as little bias as possible. This is our Peak Wellness show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The foundation for all we do. In this episode…we talk about breathing. How to breathe. Isn't that odd. I, like you, figured I knew how. For over 52 years I've been breathing air in and continuing to live. I was a pro cyclist and seemed to breathe pretty proficiently. What more do I need to know? Turns out there is a lot to know if we want to be fully functioning. In this show, my great friend and Peak Wellness CoHost, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and owner of truelifemedicine.com and I discuss the message of the book, Breath, by James Nestor. Here is a big hook of the message that may intrigue you as it did me, our nose is not simply for smelling. It is for breathing through. Our mouth is for food. When we use our mouth for breathing instead of our nose, especially at night, there are negative consequences. James Nestor is a journalist who just went to study breathing. When he and another guy spent weeks only breathing through their mouth alone, you'll be amazed at the negative results. I've talked to so many people who have had radical improvements in their lives by working on more breathing through their nose. You'll learn much in this show and even the simple awareness of correct breathing will benefit you tremendously. I wrap up our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and I'm going to give you a paradigm shifting analogy that I believe will forever change how you view your brain's ability in regards to the overall health of your body. I kicked off the series with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon whose focus is Muscle Centric Medicine. Her new book is called Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well. The focus was on how muscle, built by protein and resistance training, is key for our brain health and long term cognitive ability. This concept is a cultural shift. Then I brought on Randy James, my close friend, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, to talk about his experience with patients and his own growing understanding of the importance of skeletal muscle as it relates to overall health. Here now, I give you some highlights from the conversations, and again, an analogy I believe will greatly alter how you view and care for the future health of your brain. We continue our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and How To Remain Fully Capable As You Age. My catalyst for this series is Dr Gabrielle Lyon whose expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine, and that is our muse, how in our search for long term health often misses the vital role of skeletal muscle. Gabrielle's new book is Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well and her podcast is The Dr Gabrielle Lyon Show. Here, I'm with my great friend, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. He works directly, hand in hand with patients every day who are seeking to live long and live well. You can find him at truelifemedicine.com. He listened to my conversation with Gabrielle and I've brought him on to get his take on these topics of muscle, protein, and aging well. We actually bring back the question he always gets asked, “Dr James, what exercise is best?” And his answer has always been, “Whatever one you'll do!” Which is true if you're coming from a sedentary place. But based on Dr Lyon's research we're now saying, you'll serve your health best to give resistance training precedent over cardio. Both are best, but this is a strong case for resistance training taking a lead in the discussion. We look at a key way to give your body a break. If you've ever driven a car that was overheating, you know the only way to give it a break is to turn it off and let it cool down. Our bodies in today's culture, are almost always overheated as they try to digest food. Constant food, too much food, and food our bodies don't like and struggle with. Even in our sleep our bodies are generally toiling away trying to deal with the foods we've put in them. We never give them a break. The term for this that nobody likes is…fasting. I grew up with it as a religious practice, but here we are primarily talking about it from a physiological and psychological standpoint as we truly believe it can be a profound tactic to use for your healing. We includes my co host in this show, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. If you have a chronic illness or disease, fasting may be the best medicine possible. And I'll preface it by saying...I don't enjoy it. I've broken bones, and I don't like wearing a cast to heal. But I do. I've dealt with psychological things and seen therapists. Not a great joy. But I want the help. The topic today is...not eating food. For a prolonged period. In order to enable the body to heal. Eating throughout the day, from morning till night, is something humans have done only for a very short amount of time. A time where we've seen a massive rise in chronic illness and disease. Our bodies were created for and intended to get a break from food. In this episode we discuss just this, prolonged fasting. And you'll hear me address that I do not, at all, like to not eat. I love to eat. But I also love to feel great. To perform at a top notch level. I don't want aches and pains, now at 52 or in the future at 92. I want to think clearly and creatively. I want to be fully mobile and spry. I have no reason to give these up. And taking times to not eat and let my body heal is paramount for all this. You don't have to abstain from food for 30 days. But mere intermittent fasting is not enough to get the full benefits of fasting. So...here you go. The episode your taste buds and belly don't want to hear, but the rest of your body is starving for. I wrap up our series on…men. Manhood. I called it “The Place Of Man” because that seems to be the question these days…what is…the place of men? How should we view ourselves? We grew up with expectations that seem to have changed. Maybe for better. Maybe for worse. I think both. But I find more and more men who feel numb, ashamed, or just dissatisfied. And I could say floundering with who they are, but it may be just as much, who they feel they should be. I talked in depth with Connor Beaton, founder of ManTalks, an international organization focused on men's wellness, success, and fulfillment, author of Mens Work: A Practical Guide To Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, And Find Freedom and host of the Man Talks podcast. Then part three was with my great friend Dr Randy James. We got deep on the issues we are experiencing as men, and what we see in the culture. Here then are four main highlights I found from our conversations and my own pondering within them. I'll also share about an event I just returned from with 39 guys who did 40 miles of the Grand Teton Trail in one day. We continue our talk on A Man's Place and I titled the show, Are We Having Fun Yet? How To Enjoy Life & Not Merely Survive It. My catalyst was Connor Beaton, founder of ManTalks, an international organization focused on men's wellness, success, and fulfillment, author of Mens Work: A Practical Guide To Face Your Darkness, End Self-Sabotage, And Find Freedom and host of the Man Talks podcast. Now I'm with Dr Randy James. Randy is truly my best friend and we've walked through life together for a good decade and a half. Randy and I started off discussing what the point is. When do we leave childhood and school and say, “Ok, I'm done having any fun and enjoying and experiencing this life, now I'll just be responsible and devote the rest of my days to the grind of life.?” That sounds exaggerated, but are we living lives that our kids or young people would be inspired to pursue? No wonder kids aren't leaving home soon these days. The point isn't just to have fun. I'd argue that pursuing great purpose and fulfillment eclipses mere fun. But should we truly enjoy our lives? Solomon in the Bible said, and I paraphrase, “I tried it all, all variations of life, and t's all vanity. Ultimately nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.” So Randy and I have a candid talk about work and family and responsibility and finding true joy and tending to our hearts and souls, as men, but the message is relevant to all. Along with every illness, disease, and malady in America, Parkinson's Disease is on a drastic rise. It's no longer just an old person's issue but is being rapidly experienced in the 30-50 year old range of men and women. As we discuss in all our discussion of illness and disease, there are lifestyle issues at work. But different than most other issues we cover, my co host, Dr Randy James reveals that with Parkinsons there are some significant environmental toxin issues that come into play, which makes it relevant for everyone to be aware of. Everyone has heard of “the placebo effect” and it's usually thought of negatively. We don't want mind games to fix us, we want a literal ingredient or treatment. But here is the deal, your attitude and expectations can cause a placebo to heal you, or cause a literally beneficial treatment to fail you. What you expect has a dramatic effect on your reality. That's not conjecture, it's clinical. Do you expect your exercise to enhance your health? Do you expect your nutritional supplements to enhance your health? Do you expect your efforts to eat healthy to enhance your health? The bigger issue is your awareness of how you feel and what you expect from all your efforts. If you have doubt or bitterness in regards to any of your efforts you are likely sabotaging them. But you'll be incredibly well served to increase your positive expectations of improvement. I'm joined of course by Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine and owner of truelifemedicine.com, and you're about to hear how he and I have great faith that our expectations are incredibly powerful placebos in our overall levels of health and wellness.
