My guest today believes that the single biggest problem with our health these days is not that we carry too much fat but that we don't carry enough muscle, and that if we start to focus and prioritise our largest organ – our muscle – we can burn more fat, improve our body composition, decrease our risk of disease and increase our energy levels. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. Each week I'll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests. Today's clip is from episode 418 of the podcast with Dr Gabrielle Lyon – an osteopathic doctor who is board certified in family medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois and completed a research & clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University. She is the founder of the Institute for Muscle Centric-Medicine™ and the author of Forever Strong: A New, Science-backed Strategy for Aging Well. In this clip, she shares why muscle is critical for our health and our metabolism, how to make new healthy habits stick, and why strength training can help us live longer, stronger, and better lives. Episode Summary In this episode of the Empowered Nutrition Podcast, Erin is joined by Julia Mitchell, a functional nutritionist, bison rancher, and mother of two. Julia combines her expertise in Muscle-Centric Medicine® from her work with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's Clinic, regenerative agriculture, and food quality to help individuals optimize their health. As a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) and Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist (LDN), Julia discusses the importance of building muscle mass and consuming nutrient-dense foods like grass-fed animal proteins to improve body composition and support longevity. She also shares insights from her experience raising grass-fed bison in Alberta, where she practices regenerative agriculture to promote personal health and improve land quality. Throughout the episode, Julia emphasizes the need for sustainable nutrition strategies, understanding macronutrient needs, and the role of resistance training in enhancing metabolic efficiency. Episode Highlights The Muscle Metaphor for Blood Sugar Management: Julia explains how muscle acts like a "sponge" for glucose and fatty acids, emphasizing that larger muscle mass means better capacity to absorb and store nutrients efficiently, preventing excess in the bloodstream. Why Cutting Carbs Alone Isn't Enough: While reducing carbs can help lower blood sugar, it doesn't improve your body's ability to handle glucose in the long term. Resistance training is crucial for building muscle mass and improving metabolic efficiency. The Danger of Crash Diets and Caloric Restriction: Prolonged caloric restriction or crash dieting can lead to muscle loss, reducing metabolic capacity and making it harder to maintain weight loss in the future. The importance of preserving lean mass while losing fat is emphasized. Macro Tracking as a Tool for Awareness: Tracking macronutrients, particularly protein, can help individuals understand their eating habits and ensure they're meeting their nutritional needs. However, it's not for everyone and should be used as a learning tool, especially for those without a disordered relationship with food. How Tracking Can Prevent Overeating: Julia explains how tracking food intake can help individuals avoid mindless overeating, a common problem in today's food environment, where calorie-dense foods are easily accessible. The Balance of Nutrient Density and Caloric Control: While eating nutrient-dense foods is important, it's also necessary to be mindful of calorie intake to avoid weight gain. Being curious about your nutrition and learning how to optimize it is key to achieving long-term health goals. This is a special replay of an episode of the REJUVENAGING with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast that was first posted on September 19, 2023.In this podcast episode of the REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon discusses her unique approach to optimizing muscle health and aging well through a strategy that combines nutrition, fitness, and self-help principles. The concept Dr. Lyon introduces is "muscle-centric medicine," emphasizing the critical role of skeletal muscle in overall health and well-being. She highlights that muscle is often overlooked in preventative medicine and explains how it functions as an organ system within the body. Dr. Lyon believes that healthy skeletal muscle is essential for aging gracefully and maintaining mobility.Dr. Lyon's background includes training in nutritional sciences, board certification in family medicine, and fellowship training in nutritional sciences, making her extraordinarily well-equipped to address the topic of aging and muscle health. She shares her journey of discovery during her fellowship in geriatrics and nutritional sciences, where she observed a common thread among her patients—their health issues were often linked to inadequate skeletal muscle mass rather than obesity. This insight led to the development of her unique perspective on muscle-centric medicine.Dr. Lyon acknowledges the absence of a standardized measurement for optimal skeletal muscle mass, making it challenging for individuals to determine their own muscle health accurately. She emphasizes the importance of strength, mobility, and metabolic markers in assessing muscle health. The conversation underscores the importance of resistance training and strength-building exercises in aging well, as these activities contribute to maintaining metabolic health and functional independence.Overall, the interview with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon provides valuable insights into the often-overlooked role of skeletal muscle in healthy aging and offers guidance on how individuals can improve their muscle health for a more vibrant and energetic life.Connect withhttps://www.facebook.com/doctorgabriellelyon/https://twitter.com/drgabriellelyonhttps://www.instagram.com/drgabriellelyon/https://drgabriellelyon.comVisit Dr. Ron athttp://www.drron-kaiser.com Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon chats with Dr. Anthony Gustin about Muscle-Centric-Medicine®. With her background in family medicine, geriatrics, and nutritional science, Dr. Lyon discovered that optimizing your health starts by focusing on the biggest organ in your body: skeletal muscle. Her book Forever Strong outlines how your muscle health directly impacts your metabolic health, mental health, and overall lifespan. As she says, “Muscle is the key to longevity and aging well. The more muscle health you have, the better your trajectory of aging.” So she uses this approach to help the world's game changers — from Navy SEALs and elite athletes to CEOs and entrepreneurs — become the best versions of themselves. During their conversation, Dr. Gustin and Dr. Lyon discuss: The habits, behaviors, and standards her high-performing patients share that predict success across every aspect of their lives. How to create systems that address your personal weaknesses and outsmart your predictability. Why muscle health is so underappreciated and often ignored. Signs you don't have healthy skeletal muscle. Why a lack of muscle is a greater health threat than obesity. Measuring strength vs. power to determine muscle quality. The importance of eating enough protein, working out hard enough, and building/preserving muscle mass as we age. My guest today believes that the single biggest problem with our health these days is not that we carry too much fat but that we don't carry enough muscle. She believes that if we start to focus and prioritise our largest organ – our muscle – we can burn more fat, improve our body composition, decrease our risk of disease and increase our energy levels. Dr Gabrielle Lyon has a doctorate in osteopathic medicine and is board-certified in family medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois and completed a research & clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University. She is the founder of the Institute for Muscle Centric-Medicine™ and the author of a brand new book, Forever Strong: A New, Science-backed Strategy for Aging Well. Dr Lyon first appeared on my podcast about 18 months ago. In that conversation, she made the compelling case that the quality of our lives is directly related to the health of our muscles. She explained how having more muscle can improve our metabolism, reverse insulin resistance, reduce our risk of disease, protect our skeleton and improve our mobility and balance. She also explained the critical role of resistance training and the importance of consuming adequate protein. In this conversation, we pick up where we left off. We cover: The crucial importance of muscle mass for all of usThe relationship between the health of our muscles and the health of our brainsThe role of mindset when it comes to implementing new health-promoting behavioursHow to make healthy habits stickHer exact exercise recommendations for both the time-pressed individual and the time-rich individualHow to reframe stress to make it work for usThe impact of sleep loss on our ability to build muscleWhy Dr Lyon is not such a huge fan of goals!! This is a truly empowering conversation, built on the idea that ageing well is a choice. It is jam-packed with practical, real-world insights. I hope you enjoy listening. She is board certified in Family Medicine and completed a combined research and clinical fellowship in Geriatrics and Nutritional Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. She completed her undergraduate training in Nutritional Sciences: Vitamin & Mineral Metabolism at the University of Illinois. Dr. Lyon is a subject matter expert and educator in applying protein types and levels to health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. She has continued to receive mentorship from Dr. Donald Layman, Ph.D., over the course of two decades to help bring protein metabolism and nutrition from the bench to the bedside through her concept of Muscle-Centric Medicine®. Dr. Gabrielle has been seeing patients since 2006 and has helped thousands reach their full health potential. Her clinical practice services the leaders, innovators, mavericks, and executives in their prospective fields. Dr. Lyon works closely with the Special Operations Military serving on the SEAL Future Foundation's medical board and the Hunter Seven Foundation's leadership board, helping establish protocols for early detection, education, and treatments for cancer and toxic exposures. Have you ever counted calories or focused on certain macros and found protein to be the key for you? I'd love to hear about what you did and how in the comments below! In this episode: How Dr. Lyon came to understand muscle as she does today It's not about obesity; it's about being under-muscled What is sarcopenia and what's important about it NOW? How anyone can improve mitochondrial biogenesis The two big components of healthy skeletal muscle and healthy mitochondria Protein food fears and the science around them A mindset tip from working with Navy SEALs-- HUGE shift in thinking! Dr. Lyon's thoughts on GLP-1 agonists... you'll be surprised! Quotes "One of the reasons why I wrote this book and why this book is so important and why we have to be a unified front is that in the media, there's this push to go plant-based and there is this push that we need to decrease our dietary protein intake and nothing is further from the truth." [14:36] "We are at the precipice of a new frontier of medicine that is really going to define amino acids as individual nutrients, as well as muscle as this organ of longevity." Today, we cover something that everybody wants at some level or another—muscle. If you want to live a long time and you've fallen for the plant based nonsense science that's out there to sell more Froot Loops, well, you're heading in the wrong direction from a longevity perspective. I wrap up our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and I'm going to give you a paradigm shifting analogy that I believe will forever change how you view your brain's ability in regards to the overall health of your body. I kicked off the series with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon whose focus is Muscle Centric Medicine. Her new book is called Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well. The focus was on how muscle, built by protein and resistance training, is key for our brain health and long term cognitive ability. This concept is a cultural shift. Then I brought on Randy James, my close friend, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, to talk about his experience with patients and his own growing understanding of the importance of skeletal muscle as it relates to overall health. Here now, I give you some highlights from the conversations, and again, an analogy I believe will greatly alter how you view and care for the future health of your brain. We continue our series on Strong Body Strong Mind and How To Remain Fully Capable As You Age. My catalyst for this series is Dr Gabrielle Lyon whose expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine, and that is our muse, how in our search for long term health often misses the vital role of skeletal muscle. Gabrielle's new book is Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well and her podcast is The Dr Gabrielle Lyon Show. Here, I'm with my great friend, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. He works directly, hand in hand with patients every day who are seeking to live long and live well. You can find him at truelifemedicine.com. He listened to my conversation with Gabrielle and I've brought him on to get his take on these topics of muscle, protein, and aging well. We actually bring back the question he always gets asked, “Dr James, what exercise is best?” And his answer has always been, “Whatever one you'll do!” Which is true if you're coming from a sedentary place. But based on Dr Lyon's research we're now saying, you'll serve your health best to give resistance training precedent over cardio. Both are best, but this is a strong case for resistance training taking a lead in the discussion. We are talking about aging well. Specifically, maintaining our mental and physical strength and capacity, as long as possible. The media talks about lifespan, but what I care about is health span. I want to be healthy and able to the end, whether my end is 60 years old or 100. As opposed to lingering for the last 5 or 20 years as is getting to be the norm. A tragic norm. My expert on the topic is Dr Gabrielle Lyon. I've known of Dr Lyons for a long, long time through Functional Medicine circles. Her focus and expertise is Muscle-Centric Medicine, and today we are talking about just that…muscle, and how we are missing this necessity in our culture that is obsessed with so many of the wrong things for aging well. Dr. Lyon is board certified in family medicine and is a subject-matter expert and educator in the practical application of protein types and levels for health, performance, aging, and disease prevention. And we're going to get into this topic of protein, in relation to muscle. Her new book is, Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, which I've been studying and is the catalyst for our conversation here. In this podcast episode of the REJUVENATING® with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon provides valuable insights into the often-overlooked role of skeletal muscle in healthy aging and offers guidance on how individuals can improve their muscle health for a more vibrant and energetic life.Connect with https://www.facebook.com/doctorgabriellelyon/https://twitter.com/drgabriellelyonhttps://www.instagram.com/drgabriellelyon/https://drgabriellelyon.comVisit Dr. Ron athttp://www.drron-kaiser.com Hosted on Acast. When most people think about getting in shape, their first priority is usually fat loss - and for good reason. Excess adipose tissue can, in many cases, contribute to or exacerbate dozens of other health problems. But what if instead of focusing on losing fat, you focused on gaining muscle? Lean muscle tissue is a metabolic workhorse. It strengthens your bones, acts as a natural glucose storage location and helps to balance your hormones. Interestingly, it's often faster to build muscle than it is to shed fat, and the two often go head-in-hand.
