Our guest today is Rich Johnston, the president and owner of Vertical World in Seattle, known as America's First Climbing Gym (TM). He's also the founding chairman of the Climbing Wall Association, where he served for 16 years, and a board member on The Mountaineers. Rich tells us about the earliest days of the climbing-wall industry, why he never thought climbing gyms would succeed, and how important culture and philosophy are to creating a community of climbers that abide by the inherent risk doctrine. All of this is a prelude to discussing an important bellwether lawsuit that was just settled involving a climber who didn't clip himself in properly to an auto belay, and still came away with a whopping settlement in his favor. But first, your favorite climbing podcast hosts talk about the nebulous rules and etiquette for passing people on a multi-pitch climb. When should you let people play through? And is it ever OK to just pass without permission? Last but not least, our Final Bit comes to us from listener, climber, fellow dad, and self-proclaimed “normal guy” from Boise, Idaho, Alan Keller. HIs band is called Prairie Mountain Plain and this new song “North Bound and West” is from their latest album While They Sleep. Though comic book writer Alan Moore has officially finished his final projects and begun a well-deserved retirement from the medium of sequential art, he has also full turned his eye to, among other mediums, film — which, at least in adaptations, has treated him poorly. After a cycle of hometown prequel short films, some of which were gathered in the anthology feature Show Pieces, Moore's collaboration with Northampton director Mitch Jenkins was finally released in cinemas and VOD this fall: The Show. On this episode, I'm joined by comic book/film/TV/pop culture writer Rich Johnston to discuss:- how Moore's influence from film helped his innovative comics work from his career's outset;- what early projects, like his Fashion Beast screenplay, may have taught him of writing for film;- why his best adaptation might be a Justice League Unlimited episode;- and yet, why a string of insultingly stupid adaptations, ones that often completely ignored the source material, soured him on the medium for such a long period, leading to him taking his name off V for Vendetta, the Watchmens, and The Killing Joke.And:- How, by the way of Watchmen's flashback influence on Lost, Moore influenced all modern American television;- why The Show's funny world-building works better with subtitles and rewatches;- how Edgar Wright might have contributed to The Show finished film;- and why the proposal of its prequels, feature, and five seasons (with a pilot written by and those seasons plotted by Moore), leads to the promising prospect of Moore (and Jenkins) mastering the film medium.Rich Johnston is the founder of the Bleeding Cool website, is the longest-serving digital news reporter in the world (since 1992), and is author of The Flying Friar, Holed Up, The Avengefuls, Doctor Who: Room With A Deja Vu, The Many Murders Of Miss Cranbourne, and Chase Variant. He lives in South-West London, works from Blacks on Dean Street, shops at Piranha Comics, is a political cartoonist, and a father of two.The Show is available on VOD.
Marvel Comics never learn from their mistakes. Their trailer for Daniel Kibblesmith's New Warriors miniseries became one of the most mocked and downvoted videos in YouTube history. He's been rewarded with a Blade one-shot. Only in comic books. (00:00:00) We are living in a new era of comic books that is filed by a singular issue: there are no consequences. No matter your job performance or unprofessional behavior, if you are part of the right click you will always get a new opportunity or promotion in comic books. (00:10:32) Bleeding Cool' Rich Johnston is tying himself in knots trying not to address the real criticism people have about Marvel's United States of Captain America. (00:29:33) James Tynion IV opened up about not wanting to work on DC's planned 5G event. Turns out it was for good reason. The scrapped event was planning on destroying a loved hero. (00:41:43) Valiant Comics named Rob Levin new executive editor this week. Until they acknowledge their issues, readers won't return. (00:57:31) Mark Pellegrini noticed a lot of Mirage and Archie era TMNT comics have went from the dollar bin to high-price status lately. (01:16:24) Loki Executive Producer and Director Kate Herron won't return for the second season on Disney+. (01:35:02) Wes and Dok roast Chris Cantwell's latest comic Iron Man #10 (01:46:01). Finally, Wes reviews the debuts of Moon Knight (02:05:21) and Superman and the Authority. (02:23:25) Support Thinking Critical at Ko-fi. Many lawyers choose public service early in their careers. In a public agency, attorneys may find that they are getting more responsibility than they might get at the same stage in private practice. Assistant district attorneys, for example, find themselves trying cases almost from day one. Lawyers working for agencies that regulate industry may be given a lot more responsibility for crafting policy than they might otherwise be exposed to as an associate at a law firm. But salaries in the public sector generally lag far behind salaries in private practice and for many lawyers, the career path often runs from government into the private sector. In truth, there are many opportunities for lawyers who are further along in their careers to move in the other direction. At the highest levels of government, politicians often turn to the most successful attorneys in private practice to head agencies or craft policy later in their career. For these senior lawyers, it is a win-win. It is a chance to give back and find another burst of career satisfaction at a time in life when the economics are less important. My guest in this episode, Rich Johnston, did just that in 2015. After a long and successful career as a litigator at Wilmer Hale (a firm that was Hale and Dorr for most of his professional life), Rich was brought on by Maura Healy, the Attorney General of Massachusetts, to be her Chief Legal Counsel. In this episode, I speak with Rich about his path to the Attorney General’s Office, what he loves about public service, and advice he has for lawyers thinking about making a move like this after a lengthy law firm career. Friday DC Comics announced they were partnering with 2 other distributors than diamond to put out the month;y comics starting Tuesday April 28th. I thought this was great news for retailers, but it's more complicated than that. To explain while this "solution" may not be feasible for all comic shops, I spoke to Bleeding Cool's Founder Rich Johnston and Patrick Brower Co-Owner Of Challengers Comics in Chicago for a retailer's point of view
What is revival? Could God use the current situation to pour out a special blessing on the Church? In this wide ranging interview we talk about the Lewis revival, and an experience I had when I was a child at school. I also recount a time Terry Virgo mentioned feeling something of a touch of revival hearing Lloyd-Jones preach. Rich asked to turn the tables on me and ask the questions for a change. We go through my story, including the roots that go back to my Christian grandparents one of whom was a Scottish tent preacher, and my childhood growing up in the Newfrontiers movement. We also talk about what it has been like for me to experience my life coming to an abrupt halt through sickness. I almost feel now that the rest of the Western World is learning something of how life can be awkwardly interrupted when we least except it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adrian-warnock/message

Currently, he's the Head Writer and Founder of BleedingCool.com, a site known for breaking comic book news long before DC or Marvel issues a press release. Bleeding Cool has quite a reputation among comic book professionals, and we dig in on how Rich feels about all that, as well as how he sources stories and the people who've helped him along the way.

Briggs will discuss his illustrious career with Mike and Mike, talking about how he got into the sport of racing and how his journalism career began. TRIGGER WARNING! Matt and Brett and special guest Jordan D. White are diving into easily the heaviest comic book that’s ever been read on this show. Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows’ polarizing, controversial ode to H.P. Lovecraft is discussed, and things get serious. So, in all seriousness, here’s a legit trigger warning for sexual abuse and violence, because it’s impossible to discuss this heavy work of horror without addressing those topics head-on. Brett even read up on criticism of Neonomicon and Alan Moore’s general handling of sexual violence in his work. Here’s what he read, just in case you want more information and context. Change, My Dear, And Not A Moment Too Soon After 19 months and 46 episodes, Steve and Andy have decided to call it a day. Join us at the start of this episode as we broadcast live to the world to exclusively announce who the next hosts of the Fantasticast are. The betting has been hot, Rich Johnston keeps naming other potential hosts other than the ones who will be announced, and shortly, the secret will be revealed. Here's hoping all of the anticipation isn't in aid of a 30 second opening gag that ultimately changes nothing... Hello and welcome to the 46th episode of the show. For real. Steve and Andy are trying a new way of recording, hoping to make Steve sound like a normal human being, and we hope you'll notice an improvement in the sound quality of the show. It's a shorter episode than normal, as there's only one comic up for coverage this time around. So, we take a bit of time to trawl through the e-mails and feedback we've been receiving recently. Then it's into Fantastic Four #41 as the Frightful Four make their return with devastating consequences for the team. Send in your feedback to fantastic4podcast@gmail.com, leave your comments at the libsyn site, or at fantasticflameon.wordpress.com. Follow us on twitter, where we are @fantasticast
This is the first of two installments for Episode 79. Yes, in an attempt to see what listeners prefer, we are bringing back the two hour long installments in a week approach. This time around, Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester talk about Assbutts and iPhones, Alan Moore's latest interview, Rich Johnston and the need for a comics scapegoat. Plus, Graeme and I wonder if and when our discussions of comics and creators have gone too far. If you have a comment on that situation, we'd welcome it at either the comments thread for this episode at SavageCritic.com, or via email at waitwhatpodcast@gmail.com. As always, we hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!
