WORLD PREMIERE!"The Gift": song by Robert Miller and arrangement by Michael Abene.I originally wrote "The Gift" as a love song ballad on the occasion of the birth of my first granddaughter. My band, Project Grand Slam, recorded and released the song in 2015 on our "Made In New York" album. In April 2024 Michael Abene was a guest on this podcast. Michael is a Grammy winning arranger and composer who has done arrangements for Germany's WDR Radio Big Band, the Maynard Ferguson Big Band, the GRP All-Star Big Band and many others. He's a true giant in his field. After the interview I asked Michael to listen to the original recording of "The Gift" and see if he might be inspired to come up with something new and different. Michael came back with a Big Band arrangement of the song written as a Samba, with horns. The new version was recorded at EastSide Sound by Lou Holtzman, my longtime studio/engineer, and features me and my Project Grand Slam band mates playing on the rhythm track, plus five horns. Special thanks goes to Marc Irwin for his contributions."The Gift". We're all about happy habits on this podcast and today I'm looking at happiness itself with Professor John Helliwell happiness expert who has studied happiness and the annual world happiness report every year since it was first published in 2012. We ask which countries are the happiest and why? Are those people who are married or in a long term relationship happier than single people? How does an experiment involving dropping wallets in the street, teach us about happiness? Are younger people happier than older people? And crucially what can we do that boosts our own happiness? It's been said that there's no such thing as a pure human, that we're all hybrids of one kind or another. In Tanis Helliwell's book Hybrids: So You Think You Are Human? we take this concept to a new level. In her experience in dealing with psychotherapy clients, Tanis began seeing that we are truly all wired in an archetypally unique way. Able to see into other dimensions, Tanis could see the etheric blueprint surrounding her clients that reflected the elemental world. She identified 22 types of imprints, from Faeries and Elves to Horus and Els, and shares how they affect our personalities and behavior. Take the test and find your type! Enjoy!
Do you want to know what 6 factors contribute most to an individuals and country's happiness?John Helliwell is the co- editor of The World Happiness Report, a landmark survey of the state of global happiness that ranks 156 countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be that has been running for the last decade! He is also the Professor emeritus of Economics at University of British Columbia and a distinguished senior fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. He is one of the first economist to begin to research happiness and its effect on individuals, countries, and even GDP. In this episode we talk about the 6 factors that consistently show the highest correlation to a nation's happiness along with how to measure dystopia, dropping wallets with money around cities, and the effects of COVID on world happiness and mental health!I wanted to rerun this episode because today (March 20th) is World Happiness Day which was founded in part due to the efforts of John Helliwell among others. I interviewed not one, but three of the editors (John Helliwell, Dr. Lara Aknin, Lord Richard Layard) of the World Happiness Report who will all give different perspectives on happiness based on their areas of expertise in the next three episodes. I would highly recommend that you check out the World Happiness Report here!It is an astounding amount of research over a decade with new additions into genetics and even social media as a indicator of the happiness of various regions. Fascinating!www.successengineering.org
Happy St. Patty's Day! Tanis Helliwell thought she had done her part, she had shared her experience living with Leprechaun's at Crumpaun Cottage in Achille, Ireland. When she returned to the site for a much deserved vacation, she had no sooner landed when Lloyd said, "Yer to tell me story." He began dictating to her about the life of Leprechauns and other elementals in the dimension they reside in - the astral plane. With similar social customs and rules, the Elementals are trying to learn from humans even as they assist us in re-connecting with our beautiful Gaia and the Elemental Kingdom. Enjoy! Join me to learn the story around legendary English group, SUPERTRAMP as told by founding member JOHN HELLIWELL. John Helliwell was a small-town computer programmer-turned-musician who embarked on an unexpected journey of success and musical exploration, during which he encountered a dramatic juxtaposition between his musical success and his shy personality. John is a saxophonist and founding member of the British rock band Supertramp. He joined the band in 1973 and is known for his solo on the hit single "The Logical Song" from the album Breakfast in America. John says this solo has been the highpoint of his career. John was born in a small town in the north of England who pursued music full-time and eventually joined Supertramp in 1973. The group struggled to secure a record deal and the album Crime of the Century was recorded and released just after John had turned 29. It was their first success on their climb to international fame. Supertramp hit it really big in 1979 with the album Breakfast in America, which became a worldwide phenomenon. In fact, it was the biggest selling album of that year. John's unique saxophone and clarinet solos, along with the band's two singers and keyboard-oriented sound, made them stand right out from the mainstream. As John's fame grew with the success of the band, his life changed forever. During a Supertramp hiatus in the nineties, he moved back to England to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. However, a scholarly life was to take a back seat in 1996 when he worked with ex-Supertramper Roger Hodgson, and then began recording and touring again with Supertramp. Today John plays music based on his many inspirations – including jazz, funk, blues, soul and rock. He has a jazz group, Crème Anglaise, and also plays around Europe with Leslie ManDoki and Alan Simon. John tells us that Supertramp is currently on hold due to the illness of its founder, Rick Davies, but may continue touring in the future. John now has two more projects : 1) The Super Big Tramp Band - an 18 piece big band playing the music of Supertramp instrumentally with John soloing and acting as master of ceremonies and 2) Ever Open Door – a sextet playing folk tunes and ballads with saxophone and clarinet, a string quartet and Hammond organ. In this episode, John Helliwell gives a candid and frank interview where he reveals that the band was too shy to speak to the audience on stage. He talks about the incredible times that he shared with his fellow members and how their unique sound and songwriting style endeared them to the public across all corners of the globe. I hope you are able to join me this week on A Breath of Fresh Air. If you'd like to know more about John Helliwell and Supertramp head for my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au Please feel free to get in touch with me through the website too. I welcome any comments, feedback or suggestions for future guests you'd like to hear interviewed. Also check out John Helliwell's website www.johnhelliwell.com

In this time of instant gratification and delusion, the casualty has been Truth. So much so that one of the most often stated phrases I hear from people seeking truth is that they don't know what's real anymore. According to Tanis Helliwell, we CAN find our truth once again, IF we start listening to our body, the instrument of all natural intelligence. We've all known for decades that living a lie can show itself in all types of ill health, but we haven't focused on the reverse, which is how to listen to our body for our ultimate truths. Tanis' new book Good Morning Henry was eight years in the making because Tanis needed to live each principle before writing the next chapter. Pearls of wisdom drip from its pages in addressing how the quality of our thoughts, beliefs and emotions chart our future. All of the power is in our own hands to live a peaceful and deeply satisfying life, IF we stop ignoring our body's messages which are informed by the soul, emotions and subconscious mind. Enjoy!

So many of the Eastern and Wisdom teachings instruct us to look to our spirit when seeking meaningful change in our lives. In fact, some of these philosophies suggest that the body is a prison and our lifetimes of endeavour are only useful to catapult ourselves out of Earth's dimension where we can live blissfully as non-physical beings. But this is problematic as we are in Earth bodies with their own wisdom and records. Tanis and I speak about how we need to engage the body itself when looking to lift our spiritual experience on earth and contend with the current Chaos. It's a different twist than is often taught, but makes a great argument for honouring our bodies as the Temple of our Soul during times of Great Change.

I chose to speak with Tanis Helliwell now, at a time when we are witnessing our collective trauma and reactions from the subconscious mind. It is time to dump the debris from our collective past so we can now move into the great Age of Aquarius, which is being ushered in during these winter months. Tanis, in her twinkly and profound manner, speaks about how the heavy body of the subconscious mind can thwart actual free will and our need to dissolve these old thought forms so we can move forward as a species. John Helliwell is Professor emeritus of Economics at University of British Columbia and editor of The World Happiness Report, a landmark survey of the state of global happiness that ranks 156 countries by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. The report has been published since 2012 when the United Nations General Assembly invited countries to measure their citizen’s happiness. And why not? We measure and report GNP, the GDP, the unemployment rate, average income, home sales, but not happiness. Aren’t all these things surrogates for what we should be evaluating, i.e. happiness? On today’s show, John shares the themes he and his colleagues have identified over years of study but also the more recent effects of Covid pandemic and quarantine on our overall happiness. John studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford where he received his PhD. In 1967, John joined the economics faculty at University of British Columbia where he is now Professor Emeritus. In addition to many other distinctions, he was a visiting research fellow at Merton College, Oxford, and a Fullbright Fellow and MacKenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University (it’s near Boston, in case you’ve never heard of it) Take a few minutes to read his work: World Happiness Report. **Please rate and review Crazy Money here. Imagine plopping your luggage down in your rural Irish cottage, which you have rented for retreat, when a family of Leprechauns appears in your living room. The Eldest, who refers to himself as 'Himself' continues on to tell you that you have work to do, That work entails teaching humanity about the Elemental realm, how our worlds work together and what we can learn from one another. In these chaotic times, the Elemental Kingdom says it's simply a "pause" to give Mother Nature a break, and us a break from our habituated lives so we can transform from caterpillars to butterflies - our next level of consciousness. Talk about the 2020 world happiness report and what we can take away from it as we are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
ichard Layard remembers being a history student sitting in Oxford’s Bodleian Library on a misty morning, reading philosopher Jeremy Bentham (he of the famed “It is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong”). As he recounts to interviewer David Edmonds in this Social Science Bites podcast, he thought, “Oh yes, this is what it’s all about.” And while much has changed for the current Baron Layard FBA in the years since that epiphany, his laser-like focus on seeing happiness as the key product of any successful society has remained. Much of his effort as a labor (and Labour) economist has gone into popularizing the idea of happiness as the real measure of national success; he’s written extensively about the concept, ranging from his 2005 book, Happiness: Lessons from a New Science, to his latest, just released this year, Can We Be Happier? (written with George Ward). Layard is also co-editor, with John F. Helliwell and Jeffrey Sachs, of the World Happiness Report. The fundamental impulse of a government, he insists, should be the creation of well-being, and not just wealth. Three basic principles underlie happiness economics, Layard explains: “The way we judge the situation or the state of a nation is by the happiness of the people, especially the happiness of the least-happy people.” “We should try and produce the best state in the world that we can in the way that we live our lives and the people we touch or could touch. So we should be trying to produce the largest amount of happiness in the world that we can, especially taking into account the people who are least happy.” “Governments should also be trying to produce the greatest happiness in people, especially preventing misery. That was the view of Thomas Jefferson; I think it was the right view.” While not spoken about in government circles nearly as much as say gross domestic product, these ideas aren’t revolutionary – both Bentham and Jefferson were active at the close of the 18th century, after all. “It always had some traction,” Layard says, “but I think it’s gaining more traction now, particularly because the new science of happiness is making it practical to aim at the happiness of people. And secondly, because people have become somewhat disillusioned with economic growth — even before the financial crash.” New Zealand, Scotland and Iceland – all with female prime ministers, he notes – all have budgets aimed at wellbeing. In the podcast, Layard explains how a qualitative instrument – asking people how happy they are or are not – turns out be an excellent predictor of future lifespan, work productivity, and whether an incumbent government is re-elected. These happiness-generated predictions prove to be more accurate than predictions based on the economy. “Bill Clinton said, ‘It’s the economy, stupid.’ I’m afraid he was the stupid one. … It is pretty clear in our mental fabric that how you feel is of ultimate importance, and these other things [such as wealth or health] are a means to that end.” In 1990, Layard founded the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics, and was director of the center until 2003. His elevation to the House of Lords in 2000 was followed by some signal policy-oriented projects on happiness, mental health and even climate change. In addition to being a fellow of the British Academy, Layard was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2016.

When it comes to benzo withdrawal, all roads lead to anxiety. Anxiety is not only the most persistent and pervasive symptom of withdrawal, but it's also the catalyst which makes all the others worse. In today's episode, we learn about this mysterious emotional juggernaut called anxiety. What is it? What causes it? Why is it worse in withdrawal? And most of all, what can be done to help ease it? We also have two benzo stories, several news items, and a welcome message to the caregiver. https://www.easinganxiety.com/post/anxiety-the-beast-of-benzo-withdrawal-bfp009Video ID: BFP009 Chapters 00:00 Quote00:40 Introduction07:05 Mailbag13:04 Benzo News18:03 Benzo Stories: Intro19:43 Kathy's Story24:02 Jeff's Story31:30 Feature: Anxiety in Withdrawal47:08 Closing Resources The following resource links are provided as a courtesy to our listeners. New York: Sustainable Development Solutions Network, 2017. http://worldhappiness.report/#happiness2017. Introduction In today's intro, we opened with the quote from Kierkegaard, which I've reprinted below: And no Grand Inquisitor has in readiness such terrible tortures as has anxiety, and no spy knows to attack more artfully, choosing the instant when you are weakest, nor knows how to lay traps where you will be caught and ensnared, as anxiety knows how, and no sharp-witted judge knows how to interrogate, to examine you as anxiety does, which never lets you escape, neither at work nor at play, neither by day nor by night.— Soren Kierkegaard, “The Concept of Dread,” 1844 I followed that up with my pleasant surprise at the increase in likes of the Benzo Free Facebook page and how rapidly it has been increasing. And then I jumped into a welcome message for the caregiver. I wanted to let all of the listeners know that this podcast was as much for them as it was for the patient, and to share a genuine thank you for all they do. We also have some interviews coming and I'll start the first one this weekend. And I closed by mentioning that this episode will probably run a little long, which it did. Mailbag This is where we share questions and comments which were discussed: Did you use any nutritional supplements during your taper and withdrawal? This question was submitted by Jill. I don't have a clear answer for this one since I cannot recommend medication nor supplements nor give such advice. My experience during withdrawal includes B12 supplements prescribed by my doctor since my levels were low, kefir milk which helped my stomach for a while, and I was able to discontinue my stomach medication, again per doctor's instruction. A normal healthy diet which includes generous amounts of fruit and vegetables and a source of protein and fats (from meat or vegetables), and not too much pure sugar or “junk foods,” provides all the nutrients a person needs. There is no general need for dietary supplements or extra vitamins or minerals or for “detoxifying” measures. All these can be harmful in excess. — Prof. Ashton, The Ashton Manual COMMENT from Kathryn, in Camrose, Alberta, CanadaKathryn shared her concerns about a comment I made in a previous episode where I stated that I was “grateful to Dr. Ashton for my sobriety.” Kathryn voiced her concern that the term “sobriety” made it sound like I was referring to addiction. I was not trying to imply anything with that comment and stated that I understood the issue around certain terminology and benzo dependence. I also stated that even if someone is dependent and addicted to benzos, whether they got them on the street or from a prescription, that they are just as welcome here as anyone else. Benzo News Here are the news articles shared in today's podcast: The Deadly Worst-Cast Scenario for America's Xanax ObsessionThis article highlighted the difficulties in Scotland when the government tried to crack-down on benzodiazepines. It includes an interview with Dr. Christy Huff of the Benzodiazepine Information Coalition (BIC). “The Deadly Worst-Case Scenario for America's Xanax Obsession” by Maria Szalavitz on published on Vice.com“Yes, Benzos Are Bad For You” by Dr. Allen FrancesI wanted to bring this article from 2016 back to the attention of the listeners because it is one of the best articles, written by a top-notch U.S. psychiatrist, which lays out the danger and damage caused by benzos. “Yes, Benzos Are Bad For You” by Dr. Allen Frances published on HuffingtonPost.comWhich Misused Prescription Meds Send Americans to the ER? A recent report by US News and World Report states that benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan) are “most commonly implicated in health crisis that lead to an ER visit, followed by prescription opioids.” Of the 360,000 ER visits researchers identified which involved misuse of pharmaceuticals, “benzodiazepines were the primary prescription drug in 47 percent of cases.”“Which Misused Prescription Meds Sent Americans to the ER?” by Dennis Thompson published on U.S. News and World Report Benzo Stories I shared two stories today. One from Kathy in Windsor, Colorado and one from Jeff, in Winfield, Illinois. Jeff's story was the first one submitted to us in audio format, so it was a pleasure to hear him share it in his own voice. Feature Today's featured topic: Anxiety: The Beast of Benzo Withdrawal Today's topic is all about anxiety and we spent a lot of time on it. It is the first in our series on symptoms, and I thought anxiety was a great place to start. In the episode, I discussed an intro to anxiety and shared possible causes. Then I moved onto anxiety in benzo withdrawal, and closed out with a section on how to ease the burden of anxiety.
