Dean's Chat hosts, Drs. Jensen and Richey welcome Dr. Hargun Oberai to the podcast! Dr. Oberai was a student pf Dr. Richey's at the Samuel Merritt College of Podiatric Medicine, located in Oakland, CA. A wonderful example of the mentor/mentee relationship that carries out over time. This episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics! Dr. Oberai is now a 2nd year resident at the Chino Valley Medical Center Residency program in California, we discuss the clerkship opportunities for students and the residency program in detail! So to get back to enjoying your running and achieving the results you are capable of, head to www.healthhp.com.au/run Enjoy my chat with Kelly! I think Kelly has really shown how important it is to work on mobility and range of motion. I also found it interesting how important he finds hydration and sleep, all things I know myself and many other runners can improve on. These are all things that we think we can get away with not worrying about, but they all catch up with us eventually. I do know when I don’t sleep or hydrate enough I feel it when I’m running the next day. I also think the longer I’ve been running, the more that mobility work is vitally important, especially if I want to keep running for years to come! Summary:Do you really know how to run? If you are a trained, recreational, or novice runner, then the chances of suffering an injury through participation in this most basic of human activities may be higher than you think! A 2015 scientific review identified that for every 1000 hours of running the rates of injury increased from 2.5 injuries in highly-trained distance athletes to 7.7 injuries in recreational runners, and then up to 17.8 injuries in novice runners. Yet despite this strong correlation between injury rate and the ability, skill and capacity to run effectively, it is common to find that little technique guidance and coaching is provided by fitness professionals to teach others how to run. Today’s show is with Dr. Kelly Starrett where he answers audience questions concerning how he optimizes human performance. Kelly is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of the blog Mobility WOD. Kelly’s work across these mediums has reached large audiences and revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance. In this episode, we discuss: -Allied relationships between physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches -Do anatomical variations impact ideal posture and movement? -Why we should be taking a 30,000 foot view in our culture -How Kelly reconciles pain science and biomechanics in his physical therapy practice -How to build a large platform with the use of social media -And so much more! Kelly advocates that every human should be incorporating a mobility regime into their day to day lives. He states, “What does it mean foundationally to be a human being, what are the things we should be able to do? We remain agnostic about the way you want to train, but you better have a movement practice or at least express full range of motion if you plan on moving fast, lifting heavy, going up and down stairs, or picking up your kid.” Kelly stresses that enhancing movement is a continual process and every day is a movement screen. “We don't expect movement competence to happen overnight. This is a process but eventually we should all be moving better and better and better because that is what it means to acquire skills as a human. It takes 10,000 repetitions as a baby to integrate a movement pattern. That means we have some tolerance in the system to buffer some less than ideal biomechanics. Overtime we should be refining that.” Kelly challenges the physical therapy profession to focus more attention on educating the public on preventative care. He stresses, “When you have a fever, you take some Tylenol. If you have a cold, you don’t go see your doctor. If you have a cut, we teach people basic first aid. [Physical therapists] are not doing a good job teaching basic first aid around the body to everyone.” We also discuss Kelly’s widely successful online fitness platform and the best ways to target and gain influence in your own local community. He states, “People are looking for advocates, they are looking for help… if you set out to influence a bunch of people, you influence no one. It’s not authentic, it’s not real. Solve a set of problems and be of use to your community and people will find you.” For more about Kelly: Kelly Starrett is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of [mobilitywod.com], which has revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance. Kelly Starrett is a coach-physical therapist whose 2013 book, Becoming a Supple Leopard, is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree in 2007 from Samuel Merritt College in California. He runs his own physical therapy practice that emphasises returning athletes to elite level sport and performance. In the podcast, Kelly enthusiastically draws on his background as an elite athlete and national level coach to suggest that sport physiotherapists should consider being very well trained in the practical aspects of strength and conditioning coaching. He argues that including the ‘coach’ element in the physiotherapist’s scope of practice will provide better results for patients. He calls for physios to be able to understand, and communicate, in ‘actionable language’ for customers – potentially elite athletes. He refers to the physio-coach as someone who is ideally poised to treat musculoskeletal conditions. Plenty of practical tips on how to get there. He currently runs his own physical therapy practice at San Francisco CrossFit—one of the first 50 CrossFit affiliates—and focuses on performance-based Orthopedic Sports Medicine with an emphasis on returning athletes to elite level sport and performance. His clients see exceptional results from his progressive blend of manual physical therapy and strength training. Since 2009, Kelly has been traveling the country teaching his "Movement, Mobility & Maintenance Course" in an effort to spread his message that good mobility and proper movement are the keys to good performance and that all humans should be able to perform this basic maintenance on themselves. Kelly's clients have included Olympic gold-medalists, Tour de France cyclists, world-class extreme skiers and X-Games medalists, dancers with Smuin, San Francisco, and Sacramento Ballet Companies, military personnel, and competitive age-division athletes.
