Are you the type of leader who gets up at 4:00 AM to exercise before work? Then this episode is for you. Are you the type of leader who NEVER gets up at 4:00 AM to exercise before work? Then this episode is for you, too. Kelly and Juliet Starrett are highly regarded exercise and health gurus (they mention working with Barack Obama in the podcast!) and they believe that MOVEMENT throughout the day has a much more profound impact on the body (and mind!) than just doing an hour at the gym each day. Plus, they say you can weave it into your already insanely busy day.   Why a podcast about physical health for the busy educational leader? We want you to be healthier, feel better, and have fewer aches and pains so you can stay in school leadership longer. Your school and your district are counting on you, and these practical ideas can help.  Listen as Kelly and Juliet share some super practical ideas for your own health and longevity, and a few great ideas for your school, too (listen to learn about the StandUpKids nonprofit and the idea of encouraging a WALKING BUS at your school!) As always, send your comments, questions, and show ideas to mike@schoolleadershipshow.com. He created an interesting foundation called Standup Kids to get standing desks into schools and this hits home now that one of my kids is in school.  Ultimately, Kelly wants to instruct the next generation on how to manage pain, on their own, without having to seek medical attention. This would have a monumental impact on the healthcare system and allow doctors to genuinely treat serious ailments. Entrepreneurship may seem like an elusive endeavor in which you have to quit your 9-to-5, jump in head first, throw caution to the wind, sell your soul to investors and live on ramen…     But real entrepreneurship is messier, more complex, diverse (and also attainable) than what the movies, tv shows, and allure of Silicon Valley can make it seem. And while there's no one type of entrepreneur, there is something they all seem to have in common- a burning desire to solve a specific problem.    Juliet Starrett is the perfect embodiment of THAT entrepreneurial path. In addition to her role as CEO of the world-renowned digital health and fitness company — The Ready State, she's also an attorney, mother, and former professional whitewater rafter.    Juliet co-founded The Ready State with her husband, Kelly in 2008. Human beings are designed to move and use their bodies. It's a guiding principle that drives Kelly and Juliet Starrett. Both lifelong athletes and former world-class competitors in white water sports, the Starrett's are on the cutting edge of revolutionizing methodologies for human movement and athletic performance. From training elite athletes to developing mobility exercises for the general population, Kelly and Juliet hope to inspire and provide programs for people to “live ready”—ready for the next race, the next workout, or simply ready to run around with their grandkids. Kelly and Juliet are co-founders of Crossfit San Francisco and StandUpKids.org. They also developed The Ready State Virtual Mobility Coach, an online program that provides guided mobility videos designed and tailored to an individual's body and lifestyle. Kelly also has authored two New York Times bestselling books Becoming A Supple Leopard and Ready to Run. For over a decade, these fitness advocates have been promoting the notion of lifelong mobility. According to the Starretts, “sitting is the new smoking.” Our modern sedentary lives diminish not only mobility but health in general. They have expanded their messaging to include other critical pillars of good health such as nutrition, sleep, and hydration. Aging is inevitable, but aging poorly isn't. It takes commitment to stay physically active and hold onto what your body can do. Adds Kelly and Juliet, “You do not bounce back like you did when you were 17, you cannot do those things, but maintaining your range of motion and being a skilled mover ultimately doesn't have to change. The goal is to live pain-free and feel pretty good, and then fall off a cliff at age 97.” That's a goal we all can live with.

Shawn Faver is an advanced posture therapist who currently works as a physical education coach for children, focusing on healthy posture for improved mobility and overall quality of life. Faver has a background in kinesiology and is invested in learning as much as he can about the body in order to be able to help anyone in any situation. Faver notes that students as young as seven years old are already reporting neck and back pain. He also regularly observes forward neck posture, putting weight on toes when standing (which puts pressure on the back), and shortened hamstrings. He attributes this to the amount of time spent sitting and/or looking at screens. Luckily, posture is more manageable when we are young. Faver states that after having his PE class students do five minutes of posture intervention three times a week for two months, the posture of over 63% of his students improved significantly. Faver also refers us to StandUpKids, an organization dedicated to combatting the health risks of prolonged sitting by encouraging standing desks in school. In addition to the physical health benefits, standing desks have been shown to improve student engagement in classroom activities. Follow the ebb and flow in the reality of your life but seek to have fun with it. Enjoying what you do is the most important thing to a successful health practice over the length of a lifespan." - Dan Pardi of @humanOS_me http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "In order for someone to adopt and sustain healthy behaviors long-term, they should understand why they're doing something, how to do it, if they're doing it correctly, and if it's working. You can see that those are four really discrete factors and so you do need to understand health science. We can't totally outsource research because you're going to be the one that's making decisions in your life; nobody's going to make more decisions that you will. So, having some knowledge about all these things that can affect your health is actually an opportunity." - Dan Pardi "The replication crisis demonstrates that studies should be replicated with a different lab. With a detailed method section, someone should be able to pick up that study, follow the protocol, do exactly the same study, and get a very similar result. Often times, the real crisis is that we're not seeing enough replication because of incentives from the journals. Journals want to publish new, positive information versus what's been done before." - Dan Pardi "Don't you want experts involved in the generation of new compounds that could help patients? Don't you want people that have tons of patient experience that understand the ins and outs of seeing an individual of all different types come into their clinic? Don't you want them to have a voice in the process from the very beginning so that they can guide the clinical development program in a manner that's going to lead us to the best understanding of whether or not this drug can help?" - Dan Pardi "Part of the mindset of someone who is seeking health expertise is someone who recognizes that habits aren't just something that we learn in a week or a month; it's an ongoing process. Part of the right mindset is somebody who thinks of themselves as a regular learner by taking in new information, thinking about it, drawing diagrams, and talking about it in their community." - Dan Pardi "Instead of viewing the Ketogenic as, 'Is this the right diet?' view it as 'I'm going to give it a try. How did I do with it? What did I learn about my body from trying it?' The same thing with the Mediterranean diet; instead of viewing it as the best diet ever, we can look at the benefits of it. It's really impossible to decide which diet is best but it's certainly not impossible to say what diet is best for you because you can try it and if you feel really good, you like the food, and it's sustainable plus you're getting the results you want, then that's great." - Dan Pardi Links From Today's Show Dan Pardi Twitter Instagram LinkedIn humanOS.me Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube humanOS Radio humanOS Radio 031 The Ketogenic Diet and Diabetes - a New Study by Virta Health (Guest Dr. Stephan Guyenet) WFR 012 Dan Pardi: Living A Healthy Lifestyle In A Modern World WFR 088 Dan Pardi: How to Find The Health You're Looking For Virta Health Dr. Stephan Guyenet Dr. Begoña Ruiz-Núñez Dr. David Katz 23andMe Promethease The Feynman Technique WFR 011 Ariel Garten WFR 084 Dr. David Perlmutter WFR 129 Gretch Rubin WFR 183 Dr. Kyra Bobinet WFR 196 Aubrey Marcus  About Dan Pardi Dan’s life’s work centers on how to help people live healthfully. Show Notes In this episode of Food, Success & Life for the Modern Woman, Dan Pardi discusses how he and his team help people make behavior changes, leading to their ultimate goal. They focus on food, movement, and sleep as fundamental domains of your health practice. They provide lifestyle guidance and help you track key behaviors so you know if you’re living within your ‘Zone of HealthTM’ on a daily-to-weekly basis.   What is the Human Operating System? An application to help people implement ideas about how to affect behavior in a positive way. In order to be able to adopt this knowledge and change behavior, you need to be able to answer these 4 questions: Why you should do it? How do you do it? Are you doing it? Is it working? Many people have all the best intentions of making a change, maybe even have a plan, but never quite seem to follow through. With HumanOS, you gain the ability to understand why we change our behavior, one way or another. With the HumanOS model, you have the ability to pull through, and make the change in behavior. We have to disconvenience ourselvess to make change. Like not eating donuts for breakfast every morning. Change can happen in the moment.   Who can use HumanOS? People that are not trying to solve a specific problem right now. These are better-agers. Trying to age gracefully and keep the performance they currently have. There’s motivation to do well. They are optimizers- these are people that care to perform well in activity or mentally or both. They are trying to optimize their experience with new techniques. And then there’s people that want to make a change, like lose weight. They are not at the weight they want to be and have a motivation to make change. And people who have been diagnosed with something and have an immediate pain. For example someone who has diabetes and wants to find a way to eliminate that pain.   Create Lasting Behavior Change There are great direction followers. People who are like that are very good at following direction and getting something done. They’ll get results, but results will not last because they didn’t’ develop a habit, they followed direction. The other group of people are those who learned along the way. They took a good understanding of the subject they were covering. Those people become independent and knowledgeable. This is what we all want. In Dan’s courses, they try to persuade people to understand the subject and believe that it is the right way. And then give people a clear path to get the results. As well as getting feedback from the users. They also take into account failure, because failure is a part of everything and it needs to be built in.   Food, Movement and Sleep For Sleep: Dan encourages people to aim to get complete sleep. Means you’re waking naturally, because you’re getting enough sleep. That’s a goal. Maintain lights off at night because it determines our circadium rhythm. How much light we get will determine how much sleep we get and how restorative it is. Dimming nights in the evening will help.   For Exercise: The best guidance to determine what level of physical activity we need is from the Department of Health and Human Services which put out a weekly exercise recommendation. They’re created by an advisory committee of experts every 8 years. They analyze all the literature that has come out. The next time the committee gets together there will be a whole slew of new information. We also know that just sitting too much is not good. We need to get up and move, low intensity. If it’s easy and simple, more people will do it. We do need to incorporate intensity to maintain muscle.   For nutrition: This is challenging. But we do know a lot by trying to eat whole, fresh foods, and portion control. You will go a long way by consuming the fewest items out of a package. We want to avoid refined and over processed foods. And to have plant substances, fiber, and phytonutrients, the compounds that come out of these plants. They help cure our bodies in very complex ways. Dan’s 3 Habits to Ensure His Health Journey: InTune training: integrative and opportunistic training. I have to admit, I love this story. Two parents saw a problem effecting their children and did something about it. But not only did they try to help their children and their children's friends, they also are trying to help every child in the United States. The guests of this episode of humanOS Radio are Kelly and Juliet Starrett. Kelly is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and the author of the books: Deskbound, Supple Leopard, and Ready to Run. Juliet has a history as a competitive athlete, rowing at UC Berkeley and paddling for the US Women's Whitewater Team from 1997-2000. Together, they founded San Francisco CrossFit in 2005 (one of the first 50 CrossFit Affiliates ever), they run the healthy movement website called Mobility WOD, and most recently, they started StandUpKids.org the mission of which is to put standing desks in every public school in America. I'm also honored to be on the Board of Directors, which I mentioned in this previous post, to help this great organization achieve its mission.

Episode 30 – Kelly and Juliet Starrett Discuss StandUp Kids dot org Have you ever wondered what a guy like Kelly Starrett Considers the most important thing he will ever do?  Wonder no more because he answers that question and more on this podcast. On Episode 30 of the Doc and Jock Podcast Dr. Danny and Coach Joe discuss kids health with Kelly and Juliet Starrett.  The Starretts are on a mission to drastically change the direction of kids health in the U.S.  Their newly launched non-profit StandUp Kids is dedicated to a simple mission, Fighting for Kids health, One Desk at a Time. If you are unhappy with your kid’s spine being stuck for 8 hours a day in a chair, which the only design consideration was stacking and vacuuming, StandUp Kids is a non-profit you need to support.  Partnering up with Donors Choose, the original crowd funder, StandUp Kids is on mission to make global changes to the U.S. educational system. The conversation begins with simply unplugging and engaging in non-structured play and non-exercise activity.  The Starrett’s discus their recent trip to southern Oregon and the Rogue River.  Hanging out in an area with no cell phone reception and without most modern conveniences they were forced to unplug and go with the flow – literally. Juliet then describes an encounter with a Hippo.  Yes that kind of Hippo.  After competing and winning the World White Water Championships in Africa in 1997, Juliet was attacked by an adult Hippo while taking part in a rafting trip.  Amazingly enough she swam 70 yards to shore in crocodile infested water and escaped with only a small scrape – caused by the tooth of the hippo while breaking through her kayak. We quickly understand that StandUp Kids is about effecting the lifestyle of America’s youth, not simply getting kids to do more sit ups and putting a Band-Aid on a huge problem.  The Starrett’s began to notice interesting orthopedic issues popping up with 1st grade kids.  Anyone with pre K kids can attest to the fact that they kids run on the balls of their feet and squat pretty well.  However, the Starrett’s began to notice poor movement patterns associated with a high degree of sitting.  Kelly describes a light bulb moment realizing he had neglected to apply the Mobility Wod model to kids. Juliet also describes a simple calculation she performed that showed that if she stood at a desk, as opposed to sitting, she had the potential to burn an extra 90,000 calories a year! Danny asks if research from the Bogalusa Long term heart study impacted their own research or played into the discovery of stand up desks as a simple fix to a major problem.  Bottom line is folks are working hard to solve the childhood obesity problem.  Across the board, whether its University research or a subjective experience with 5 classrooms in San Fran, the findings are that a movement rich environment is positive for kids health. Kelly also describes some specifics about the StandUp Kids intervention.  If kids are sitting there simply are not many options for kids to move.  By making the simple and effective switch to a standing desk kids have more movement options to manage the learning situation, non of which include turning their backs into question marks.  One of which, however, is sitting on the floor.  The major point here is that sitting in a chair is not natural.  Kelly challenges anyone sitting to attempt to jump, jerk, swim or deadlift with a similar posture and spinal angle.

How To Do Your Workouts Using Biofeedback Natcha says: She has been using an Autoregulatory Training approach (with bio feedback) in her strength training where she measures her body and nervous system response to a workout by going through a range of motion test. If she does the test, and the range of motion increases, then that indicates that her nervous system likes that particular exercise and they recommend that she continue doing the exercise until it becomes more difficult or until it no longer tests well. Is this a good way to increase strength and performance? What do you think of this approach?   Natural Remedies For Stomach Ulcers Anonymous Tummy says: He is looking for ways to treat his stomach ulcers. In my response, I recommend: - -- How You Burn Ketones Chris says: A few episodes () ago you mentioned how Ketones can be used for energy but are unique because they bypass the Krebs Cycle. His limited understanding is that the breakdown of Ketones leads to the production of 2 acetyl-CoA molecules that then go into the Krebs Cycle and get oxidized like any other molecules. He would love to know more about how this works.   Supplementing With Inositol Holly says: She wanted to get your opinion of Inositol. Her naturopath has put her on it for long term management of polycystic ovarian syndrome. He naturopath said that it helps with the metabolic side of things and with shortening the menstrual cycle. She hasn't been able to find any information on long term side effects. Do you have any concerns with it? In my response, I recommend: - How To Know If You're Getting Enough Micronutrients Josh says: He currently eats mostly ketogenic and tracks everything he eats with a cronometer which has built in recommended values for micronutrients. He has heard that those RDA values are not necessarily "optimal" so he is wondering if you have any recommendations for micronutrient values. In my response, I recommend: -- - -

#30 Why Wait Until You're Injured? Most Are 100% Preventable! with Dr. Kelly STARRETT EXPERT GAMEPLAN SESSION: (USA) FORMER US CANOE TEAM MEMBER, CO-OWNER OF SAN FRANCISCO CROSSFIT & MOBILITYWOD.COM FEBRUARY 20, 2015 Dr. Kelly Starrett of MobilityWOD.com & San Francisco Crossfit Hello, World! BACKGROUND A few years back during one of my volleyball seasons, I started to have these random knee issues and I had no idea what actions I needed to take. I came across Dr. Starrett and his “mobility stuff”online and I didn’t know what any of it was. As I continued to research, I found so many things from him that has helped me throughout my career over the years, so I guarantee to all of you who are listening, you will be able to take many lessons away from today’s episode. We will get into all of the basic things athletes, or anyone in general, need to have or do on a day to day basis when it comes to maintaining a high fitness level and staying healthy. He talks about the importance of having a ball sport in your repertoire as a kid as well as being involved in a sliding sport (ie: surf, skate, ski). Today you will learn why Dr. Starrett says that “the first wealth is health.” BIO Born, Kelly Starrett, currently living in San Francisco, California. Share this with one person you think could benefit the most… Hello, World! Key Discussion Points: As far as training and conditioning in youth teams, what are things that can be done to make sure the athletes are being taught the correct technique, as it is often overlooked? Why is MCE the new recovery for injuries? Key Lessons: As an athlete, there is no OFF button; athletes have a tendency to push through knowing something is wrong, coaches need to pay for attention When conditioning properly, we can get leading indicators, signals of possible injuries that may come in the future KS @ 21:38 “How do we know we have a problem? Pain, swelling, numbness and tingling, loss of forced production..that gets our attention, but those are lagging indicators. What we get from better conditioning is a set of leading indicators.” Conditioning is where you reinforce the fundamental positions of particular sport Technique in training is key KS @ 22:44 “The best technique actually mimics the physiology of the human.” Ready positions is ready position and its the same in all sports Training isn’t always about strength, but more so efficiency Icing doesn’t necessarily cure an injury KS @ 41:03 “There is not a single piece of research that shows icing helps an injury We reduce swelling by elevation, compression, and squeezing the inflamed/swollen area Anything you put a brace on is eventually going to become weaker Hello, World!
