Episode 201: This episode was recorded October 3, 2024 and published October 8, 2024. A really fun conversation getting to know the chairman of San Diego Comic Fest, Matt Dunford. SD Comic Fest takes place October 25-27, 2024. Matt is passionate about comics and has a connection to some of the most incredible celebrities in the industry, and yet, he is quite humble. Matt and I talk a bit about mobile filmmaking from his perspective, and his thoughts on '28 Years Later' by Danny Boyle, shot with iPhone and funded by Hollywood studios. But in this episode, you'll enjoy a fun conversation where Matt shares intimate stories of his connection to the comics industry. Matt shares how he learned to read with comics, his first San Diego Comic-Con experience, and then we discuss his role in the Netflix Emmy award-winning documentary series, “Love on the Spectrum.” Matt is in the first episode of season 2. MONSTER PARTY SAYS, "HEY! YOU'VE GOT YOUR WESTERN IN MY SCI-FI!" JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, discuss what happens when a science fiction film or TV show is cross-pollenated with a non-genre concept. It all goes down in an episode with a slightly long-winded title called... SCI-FI MASHUPS: THE MANDALORIAN AND BEYOND!!! Some of the most popular sci-fi franchises borrow heavily from other genres, especially westerns and samurai films. The STAR WARS franchise is probably the most high profile example, with THE MANDALORIAN being the current standard bearer. Of course, there are a slew of other shows and films, that not only follow this same approach, but attempt to blend even more diverse non-science fiction genres. And we're gonna hit them all! Well, most of them. Okay, some of them. Look, the shows can't all be over three hours! In the tradition of our topic, we decided to mash this episode up with an excellent guest! He's a brilliant writer, blogger, attorney, long-time champion of MONSTER PARTY, and host of his own ridiculously popular podcast: THE LEGAL GEEKS. Let's give a Grogu greeting to... JOSH GILLILAND! (BOW TIE LAW, UNLOCKED STORIES: TEN STORIES, ONE PHONE, SAN DIEGO COMIC CON, WONDERCON, SAN DIEGO COMIC FEST, SAN FRANCISCO COMIC CON, GEEKIE AWARDS NOMINATION 2015: BEST PODCAST) WARNING: AFTER THE END MUSIC, THERE IS EVEN MORE BICKERING OVER GODZILLA VS. Chairman, Matt Dunford, gives the Hall H Show an update on what's in store for San Diego Comic Fest 2020. The San Diego Comic Fest is the friendly comic convention with a casual and intimate setting that allows fans to interact directly with professionals and exhibitors. This time, we return to San Diego Comic Fest, for a weekend filled with some of our favorite panels of the year. Listen in and enjoy!
A mock trial based upon Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth featuring law students from Golden Gate University, California Western School of Law, and the University of Kentucky. Recorded live at San Diego Comic Fest on March 9, 2019. Overview of Facts: Harvey Dent had his silver dollar taken away as part of his treatment at Arkham Asylum. Psychotherapist Ruth Adams claimed Dent was being “cured” of his obsession with duality. Dent's treatment was replacing his coin with a six-sided die and then Tarot cards. Dr. Adams next stage of treatment was to introduce Dent to I-Ching. Dr. Adams believed Dent would have a completely functional judgment facility that did not result in black and white absolutes.Result of Treatment: Dent was unable to make basic decisions, such as when to go to the bathroom. The treatment left Dent hollow and sitting under a table the day the inmates took over asylum. The Lawsuit: Attorneys retained by the Wayne Foundation have brought 42 U.S.C.S. 1983 lawsuit against Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, Dr. Ruth Adams, and DOES 1-50, claiming that Harvey Dent's treatment violated the 8th and 14th Amendments. Dent's attorneys have claimed Dr. Cavendish and Dr. Adams demonstrated a “deliberate indifference to a prisoner's serious illness” and subjected Dent to "the unnecessary and wanton infliction of pain" by taking away his coin. Attorneys for the state have brought a summary judgment motion on the grounds that Dent's coin was not taken away as a form of punishment, but a form of treatment.Attorneys retained by the Wayne Foundation on Dent's behalf have brought suit against Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, Dr. Ruth Adams, and DOES 1-50, claiming that Dent's treatment violated the 8th Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. The Defendants have argued that Dent's coin was not taken away as a form of punishment, but a form of treatment.Arguments by Parties The Plaintiffs are seeking a preliminary instruction against Arkham Asylum to cease any treatments on Harvey Dent that deprive him of his coin. The Plaintiff will argue that Arkham Asylum, the late Arkham Administrator Charles Cavendish, and Dr. Ruth Adams, were all deliberately indifferent to Harvey Dent's medical condition, that the treatment amounted to cruel and unusual punishment, and that a preliminary injunction is needed in order to prevent further cruelty to Harvey Dent. The Defendants oppose the motion on the grounds that Harvey Dent's treatment was not punishment or deliberate indifference to the patient's medical needs, therefore there is not a likelihood of success on the merits, risk of irreparable harm, the balance of equities and hardships do not tip in the plaintiff's favor, and an injunction is not in the public interest.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thelegalgeeks)
This week D-$ is joined by Matt Dunford, chairman of San Diego Comic Fest. The two talk the convention's origins and Matt's love for comic books and pop culture. Get to know a whole lot more about one of San Diego's top comic cons.
Aaron Nabus here and one thing I love about podcasting is being able to connect with and share the stories of incredible people in the pop culture and comic book universe. One such person is the brilliant silver age comic book historian, illustrator, author and fellow graphic designer, Arlen Schumer. This episode was recorded at Palm Springs Comic-Con 2017 just before Arlen was set to give a VisuaLecture about the 25th Anniversary of Batman the Animated Series. I enjoyed our conversation that covered meeting his boyhood idol, Neal Adams at 15 years old and then working for him 10 years later...which is an important part of Arlen's life since he lost his own father at young age and considered Neal Adams as a father figure. We also talk about Jim Steranko, another one of his comic book idols that he almost ended up working for as well; our mutual graphic design hero, Saul Bass; why he calls his presentations, “VisuaLectures;” Jack Kirby, Black Panther, the lack of Asian heroes and leading men and more! If you will be at San Diego Comic Fest 2019, which takes place March 7-10, you won't want to miss Arlen's four VisuaLectures covering: The 50th Anniversary of Jim Steranko's Captain America Steve Ditko The 60th Anniversary of The Twilight Zone 50 Years of Neal Adams' Batman Thanks for listening to episode 56 of the Hall H Show featuring my friend, Arlen Schumer...and for episode 57 you'll get even more of Arlen as I had the good fortune of sitting down with him for a few hours at San Diego Comic-Con 2018...enjoy!
It's the start of the convention season and we couldn't think of a better way to welcome it's return than inviting back the current chairman of one of our favorite cons, San Diego Comic Fest, Matt Dunford! San Diego Comic Fest 2019 takes place on March 7-10, at the Four Points by Sheraton on Aero Dr. in San Diego, CA. The emphasis at San Diego Comic Fest is on comics, science fiction and movies, served up with a sense of community that brings professional writers and artists together with fans in an environment of creative exchange. This year's theme will be the celebration of when science fiction became science fact...it's the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing! Welcome back to the show, Matt!
