The Theatre Podcast with Alan Seales

Jayne Atkinson believes she has this kind of magic superpower of getting what she wants if she puts her attention to it, and she's got a long list of credits to prove just that. She looks back on her childhood and having an English sensibility (and sense of humor) even though she grew up in America. She credits her high school drama teacher as the one who gave her the foundation of her work, and thinks fellow classmate Michael Greif is her “theatre angel”. Jayne talks about her latest play, "Still," which she stars in alongside her old friend Tim Daly. She shares the story of what made her say yes to the play after receiving the script from Will Rucker, and the show's themes of love, connection, and the importance of listening to each other. Jayne gets real as she reflects on the impact of technology on human connection, why she thinks “the SAG strike didn't hit some of the issues it needed to hit”, and the significance of live theater, especially today. With a successful acting career and so many credits under her name, she shares her personal motivations, advising aspirants to prioritize self-care and enjoyment in auditions. Jayne Atkinson is a British American actress who's graced everything from Broadway's grand stages to popular television shows. You might recognize her from her Emmy-nominated role as Karen Hayes on “24” or her powerful performances in “House of Cards” and “Criminal Minds”. Her accolades extend far beyond the screen, including Tony Award nominations for her captivating theater work in the 2000 production of “The Rainmaker” and the 2003 production of “Enchanted April”. Her other TV and film credits include “Parenthood”, “A Year in the Life”, “Gossip Girl”, “Madam Secretary”, and “Death and Other Details”. Jayne is also a three-time Drama Desk Award nominee. She was last seen on stage starring alongside Angela Lansbury in “Blithe Spirit”, and can now be seen in the off-Broadway production of “Still” at the DR2 Theater. This week Kevin goes over American Nightmare on Netflix, Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+, Death and Other Details on Hulu, Self Reliance (also on Hulu), and quickly talks about The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. The episode starts of with a bit of a history lesson with American Nightmare.  It's a 3 part documentary about the infamous "Gone Girl" kidnapping in 2015 in California. Kevin doesn't usually do documentaries, but this one grabbed his attention because it was a story he thought he knew. As it turns out, he really didn't. It's a fascinating look into what can go wrong in a high profile case and is definitely worth a watch. Next up he covers the new Percy Jackson series over on Disney+. It's an adaption of the popular book series and a more faithful version than the 2012 film. It's definitely targeted at the younger set, but Kevin gives it a thumbs up anyways. Just go in knowing that and it's pretty enjoyable.  After that family friendly fare he jumps into the more adult series Death and Other Details on Hulu. It's a weekly whodunit mystery series in the vein of Agatha Christie films like Murder on the Orient Express. Mandy Patinkin leads the cast as investigator Rufus Cotesworth and Violett Bean is Imogene, his reluctant partner. It's only a few episodes in, but very promising so far. He shifts over from TV to film with Self Reliance on Hulu. It's a Jake Johnson led dark comedy and his directorial debut. Overall it's a decent film but not quite the romp Kevin had hoped for. The premise, a game where he's playing for his life, is very promising but it's a little more tame than it should have been, especially starring Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick. Before lowering the curtain on the episode, he gives a quick discussion on the Remaster of the The Last of Us Part II, now available for Playstation 5. There's nothing new in the main story itself, but there are some interesting new additions, including a rogue-like section that is sure to have people playing for a long time to come. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week!
