Smack and Gabi are facing off in their 4th Annual Showdown Throwdown in which we compete to see who had the better reading experience during Mysterious Galaxy's Summer Bingo. Gabi actually won Mysterious Galaxy's black-out bingo lottery this year, so we begin with an accounting of how those winnings were spent (on books, of course). Then we get into Showdown Throwdown proper, with Smack trying to redeem herself after losing last year largely due to her inability to win our tie-breakers (rock-paper-scissors). Unfortunately, she's up against some heavy hitters as Gabi has had a pretty great reading year and managed to stack her draft picks (a little bit). However, Smack does have some impressive contenders in her corner, including a sequel to a book we both loved (and Smack rated as in her top three books of all time) and a novel by T. Kingfisher, queen of blending fairy tales and horror. Time will tell whose line-up will triumph! In this part one of two, the books showdowned throwdowned include: The Witches' Blade (Five Crowns of Okrith #2) by A.K. Mulford v. Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis Those Beyond the Wall (The Space Between Worlds #2) by Micaiah Johnson v. Murdle: Vol. 3 (Murdle #3) by G.T. Karber The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo v. A Pirate's Life for Tea (Tomes & Tea #2) by Rebecca Thorne Calamity (Uncharted Hearts #1) by Constance Fay v. Murdle: Vol. 2 (Murdle #2) by G.T. Karber Court of Tricksters (Fae Tricksters #1) by S.L. Prater v. The Imposition of Unnecessary Obstacles (The Investigations of Mossa and Pleiti #2) by Malka Older Grief is for People by Sloane Crosley v. Lone Women by Victor LaValle A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher v. Gwen & Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them by Barbara F. Walter v. The Assassin's Blade (Throne of Glass #0.1-0.5) by Sarah J. Maas Bitter Medicine by Mia Tsai v. Thank you For Listening by Julia Whelan Slewfoot by Brom v. These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights #1) by Chloe Gong Caught in the Basilisk's Gaze (Monsters of Faery #4) by Mallory Dunlin v. Mysterious Galaxy's annual summer bingo is in full swing and we are (still) getting ready to throwdown!!  This week to complement the accounting of Smack's reads last month, Gabi details some of her recent reads that will be feeding into our annual Throwdown next month.  We begin by spending way too much time talking about a book of murder-themed logic puzzles - proving that Smack absolutely kills (haha) at birthday gifts - then discuss some incredible worldbuilding in an excellent anti-empire werewolf fantasy novel and a couple of novellas featuring sapphic Sherlock Holmesian stories on Jupiter.  After a quick lesson on tardigrades and bemoaning her attempt to dip another toe back into the world of Sarah J. Maas, Gabi finishes by celebrating her first impressions of the Scholomance series, which has set the bar high for the rest of the trilogy, so we'll see how that goes... Books discussed this episode include: Murdle Vol. 1 by G.T. Karber The Silvered by Tanya Huff Mossa & Pleiti series by Malka Ann Older The Three Little Tardigrades by Sandra Fay The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas The Scholomance by Naomi Novik

Mysterious Galaxy's annual summer bingo is in full swing and we are getting ready to throwdown!  Smack went to StokerCon and spent some time cat-sitting for Gabi by the beach, during which she read quite the spread of bingo books.  Highlights included an excellent historical horror novel about a Black woman with a mysterious trunk trying to survive in rural Montana, a Goose Girl retelling that perfectly blends fairy tale and horror, and a memoir about a woman's journey dealing with Complex PTSD that made Smack's list of best books of the year.  Meanwhile, Gabi details her mission to hunt down a title and author that she can't remember from an old book that she didn't even like and shares fun facts about deep sea beasties.  We close with a classic ITBR PSA, this time about taking heat seriously this summer - drink water and make smart choices! In this special episode of Postcards from a Dying World we are talking about the international bestselling anthology Never Whistle at Night co-edited by Shane Hawk. Never Whistle at Night is the type of anthology like Dark Forces, Revelations, or Dark Matter that will live on for Generations. Fans of short horror fiction should not miss this collection but it is also a must-have for horror readers that want to explore the genre through the work of diverse authors. What makes this book so special is it features twenty-plus stories by Indigenous native American authors. Shane Hawk is a young author who hit the local and national scene and was so passionate about this project that they thought they might have to fund this book by Kickstarter, but it ended up with a Big Five publisher and on the bestseller list here and in Canada. So we talk in this interview about the amazing story behind this book. This episode was recorded at the book launch here at our amazingly awesome local bookstore Mysterious Galaxy, so the song is not perfect. There is also no video this time. I was honored to be asked to do this interview! Shane is awesome and the book is great. Enjoy!

Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick and Becky's birthaversary. Instead of our usual chapter discussion of The Red Pyramid, we have a fun chat with Graci Kim about her series, now that it's done, and what's coming up next for her. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:00:59) A very happy birthaversary to Rick and Becky, who celebrated their 59th birthday and their 38th year of marriage on June 5. Rick even wrote a blog post about it, which included some pretty fantastic pictures. Congratulations to Charlie Bushnell, who just graduated high school! Brave + Kind Books is re-streaming the Atlanta The Sun and the Star event on June 12 at 5pm ET. There are still signed book available, and they'll even ship internationally! We also announce the countries of the people who won our international giveaway! This Hollywood Reporter interview doesn't have a lot of new info, but it's still nice hearing Rick talk so passionately about combating the racism Leah has experienced since her casting. Read Riordan has a whole article on the bulgae from The Last Fallen Realm. If you missed the Last Fallen Realm virtual event from Mysterious Galaxy, you can watch it on YouTube and even order a copy of the book with a signed bookplate! Karen goes through some of the highlights from the event in case you don't have time to watch the whole thing yourself! The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim (00:16:25) What is this book about? We give you a very short synopsis. Read Karen's Last Fallen Realm book review! This book takes place in Vegas! Have we ever been there? Reality is collapsing, and even though it's cool to see the Godrealm's version of our stores, it's not a good thing! People are so skeptical, they didn't think any of what was happening was actually real. Everyone is back for this book, and it was a lot of characters to keep track of! Did anyone else vibe something more between Dahl and Taeyo? We really love how Riley's parents adopted Dahl into the family. We get to meet the other goddesses in this book, and they're pretty interesting! Do we have a favorite? We're kicking off the spoiler section at 00:31:19. What did we think of the Water Dragon Goddess? And we finally get some answers about Hattie! It was really beautiful seeing Hattie support Riley and help her combat her imposter syndrome. We would TOTALLY have Moon Bunny ears if we could. The mini golf tournament had total Alice in Wonderland vibes. How useful would it be if we could fold space?? We absolutely loved the bulgae and what the second trial ended up being. If you've watched The Good Place, you've heard of the Trolley Problem. Emmett and Riley finally admit how they feel about each other. We feel so BETRAYED by what the Mayor did in this book. Let's take a moment to pour one out for Dahl. Did anyone see that Taggy reveal coming? Okay, it's time to talk about the ending of The Last Fallen Realm. Kristen has an alternate ending—what do you think!? We don't like being sad, but that doesn't mean this ending didn't have its merit. WE TOTALLY DIDN'T ALMOST CRY WHILE WE WERE RECORDING THIS EPISODE. Where do all the rest of the characters end up? This book made us feel a little bit better about the world, and honestly, what more could we ask for? Interview with Graci Kim (01:12:10) Check out the written interview here, in case you want to follow along! The first thing we want to know is…how is Graci doing now that the Gifted Clans series has come to a close? What were the challenges of writing The Last Fallen Realm? Had Graci ever been to Vegas before? We learn why Riley Oh dealt with so much imposter syndrome in this book. Was it difficult to balance Hattie and Riley's personalities? Is Hole-in-One-Riley based on Graci's real life!? Let's talk about all the wonderful food in this book! Why is the Tree of Life such a consistent symbol across multiple cultures? The spoiler section for these questions starts at 01:34:52. Okay, we've gotta talk about the mayor's betrayal. Graci explains why she ended Riley and Dahl's story like that, and the surprise she came across after she drafted this book. Has she thought about Riley's life after this book at all? Would she revisit this world at some point down the line? Graci also talks about how Rick Riordan Presents has started to change the publishing world. Would Graci ever be involved in an adaptation of her series? Lastly, she gives us an update on the new series she's working on! Stick around to listen to us discuss a few of her answers and give our input! Fans of either writer will want to grab that episode as well because this couple is one of the greatest things going on in sci-fi right now. Both appeared on panels at the Cymera Festival in the UK.I enjoyed this conversation so much, as we delved into a lot about Galla-Deia, the humanoid protector of our species born from a gemstone and raised by a sentient robot. Dianne's series is part Star Wars, part GoT, and we discovered, as we talked, that it's also part Foundation series and My Fair Lady as well. It's just really good, and Galla-Deia's character is a big part of that. The series is four books long, but the one that we focus most of our discussion on is book two, Ephemeris, which actually serves as both a prequel and sequel to Heliopause, book one. What is this supply chain issue? Why can't I always get the book I want at an indie bookstore? What does it mean to be an indie bookstore? Is pre-ordering really a thing? Well, all these questions and more get answered on today's episode! I had a wonderful time sitting down with booksellers from East City Books in DC, Mysterious Galaxy Books in San Diego, and Savoy Bookstore & Café in Rhode Island. What happens in a classroom of refugee and immigrant youngsters learning English? Their fresh approach to language can result in remarkable poetry -- some of which is collected in the anthology England: Poems from a School. Also, new language among healthcare professionals: the term cohorting describes the act of grouping patients with COVID-19 in designated facilities. But what's the word for reintegrating them into the general patient population after treatment. Decohorting, maybe? Finally, who can resist all those independent bookstores with tantalizing names like Moon Palace and Mysterious Galaxy? Also, black-hearted buzzard, nesh, livid, muckle, Fiddler's Green, Come go home with us, and a confounding puzzle about words containing the letters C-O-N. While recapping the first chapter of Part 3 we also wander into some brief thoughts on gun ownership (spoilers: we do not want them to take your guns away) and then we jump right into American Gods: how the show is really different from the book and how much we LOVE IT. Then it's on to the San Diego Book Crawl, last weekend's Transformers Earth Wars “Victorion” event, Gregory McGuire, Phillip Pullman, and a little bit about Pokemon Go that segued into Zombies Run. No, we don't know either. (Also we don't have much new news on the IDW Transformers situation, but we're always up for some rampant speculation.) The outro music this week is a clip from "Roll Out" by Mount Holly, which they wrote for the Transformers Earth Wars trailer. Listen to the whole song on the Hasbro youtube feed. https://youtu.be/_GPmZyHJzX0 Correction: the one bookstore Elizabeth missed when mentioning the book crawl was Mysterious Galaxy, which is also a very cool shop. https://www.mystgalaxy.com/

Star Wars day comes but once a year on May the 4th, but you know what? EVERY day is Star Wars day, in my heart. Here’s the I Wanna Party With Bob Star Wars celebration, featuring songs by John Cougar Concentration Camp, Supernova and MC Chris - all Star Wars in nature. There is an interview with Star Wars fan and San Diego radio person (91X) Tim Pyles, who also took the time to do a Star Wars Madlib with me and answered 9 Star Wars trivia questions, as well! I talk a little about my thoughts on Star Wars and what makes the galaxy far, far away so special to me. This episode was brought to you by the fine people of Mysterious Galaxy bookstore and Rad Coffee company. Lightspeed to Endor!
