So, recently I started looking for my first software job. The first offer I received was from a company looking for an intern. The internship had the following conditions: 1) the first 3 months of it are unpaid 2) you have to sign a contract after the 1st month of it that obligates you to stay at the company 2 years after the internship is ended. I rejected it because I felt like you never know what that company may turn out to be. For example, it may try to exploit you and pay you the bare minimum for the job you're doing preventing your career growth and your only option may be to wait for that contract to expire and then start looking for a higher position at another company. I'd like to ask your opinion about: unpaid internships internships that obligate you to stay at the company for 1 or 2 years once the internship is ended companies that follow both of these practices Unpaid internships and indentured servitude
Internships can give a leg up to students starting their careers. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, more than half of internships lead to full-time jobs. But 47 percent of U.S. interns were unpaid in 2022, creating tough decisions and disparities for many. Washington Post reporter Kelsey Ables joins John Yang to discuss her reporting on this issue. For most young people, an internship is an introduction to the work space especially in their selected field of study. An internship can last between 3 to 12 months and depending on what industry you are in, you either get paid or not. What do you think? Should a student be paid during an internship?
Students and advocacy groups are arguing for social work and teaching students to be paid for their mandatory vocational internships, amid growing cost-of-living pressures. Unions New South Wales argues that unpaid full-time internships are denying struggling students the chance to earn any supplementary income.

This year is all about going where the money resides. I do not know whether to be upset about the fact that unpaid internships are still, "a thing" or to just be appalled at the fact that there is still conversation surrounding being a part of an unpaid internship setting. The last time I checked, inflation was at an all-time high and the cost of goods and services keep rising. In this case, whether you are a recent college grad, a full-time student, or maybe in your senior year of high school, it is important to know, that YOU have value and you should apply to internships that compensate for your willingness to learn and contribute to their organization with some kind of stipend. It is only fair. Let me know your thoughts! #EndUnpaidInternships

In this episode, we answer a controversial question: overall, do unpaid internships help or hurt your professional career? We look at unpaid internships' pros and cons and their alternatives for those who want to go through a different path. I'll also share my personal experience with unpaid internships, what I think of them, and the results they gave me. If you enjoyed the show, please leave us a five-star iTunes review.
Most, if not all, students have encountered a point in their academic lives when they have needed to do an internship. The unfortunate truth is that we have been conditioned to believe that internships are "meant" to be done for free, or that they are not "real" work, worthy of payment. Such a line of thought does nothing to alleviate the insecurity of an already vulnerable section of the population, and is deeply problematic by extension. Our second short-form episode takes us into the world of unpaid internships, and the many things wrong with it. Morally and materially, unpaid internships benefit far fewer people than they exploit, and that exploitation is exacerbated when one is from an underprivileged group. Several studies (linked below) have revealed that oppressed castes in India and racial minorities abroad, as well as lower classes globally, not only find it much harder to secure an internship, but also to find steady jobs afterwards. Economic affluence is a necessary condition to be able to accept an unpaid internship without a second thought, so the question we need to ask ourselves is: are we not contributing to oppression by doing internships for free? It is not an instance of neutrality - one isn't simply being "neutral" by accepting an unpaid internship, but rather actively enforcing the status quo. Seeing as most of our listeners are from the same demographic as us, we thought this short episode would resonate well. Do reach out to us with any thoughts you have, or even if you simply want to rant about how you were coerced into working for free. We're here to listen, and here to speak against it. Is it legal to hire unpaid interns or have multiple vehicles registered under one license plate? Ahmed Odeh gets us all answers all to your exciting questions on #LEGALISH.This Week's Questions: “Is it legal to hire interns in the UAE? And is it legal ta have people work for you for free, under the pretense of giving them experience?” “My neighbor has five cars, four of them have no number plate and he just takes the plate off and drives the car for the day. He has four cars and one license plate. They are not luxury cars. They are economical. Is this legal? I'm not a snitch, but I'm curious about what is legal or illegal here.” “My father passed away at the end of January. And we're trying to get a hold of his HR end of service, plus his life insurance provided by the company that he used to work for. We hired a legal consultant in Dubai to work on the case and he charged us about 15,000 Dirhams to handle all the matters in regards to my dad's estate, including bank account closure since they were frozen, when we reported that he passed away. RTA matters, and so on as well, we're also included. The issue I'm having is that once the lawyer saw the end of service and life insurance amount and the court files, he is now demanding more money from us. And saying that he will deduct a percentage from the inheritance before depositing the money into my mother's account. He's asking for 100,000 dirhams, apart from VAT. He's saying that the lawyers actually charge 1%. And if he had known the inheritance amount was large, which obviously we're not aware of it ourselves, the terms would have been different. Is there anything I can do in this situation at all? I'm at loss on to who to call or where to go for this.” Send your questions to hello@dukkanmedia.com or slide in our DMs, and we promise to keep it anonymous.Check out the episode on your favorite podcasting platform.#WeCauseCultureHosted by OT, Reem, and Ahmed Odeh, Legal-ish is brought to you by the audiophiles at Dukkan Media.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
