Gut health plays a pivotal role in our overall well-being, influencing everything from digestion to immune function and even mental health. The gut houses trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the microbiome, which work to break down food, absorb nutrients, and protect against pathogens. A healthy gut not only supports digestion but also impacts mood, energy levels, and the body's ability to manage inflammation. Recent research shows that a diet rich in diverse plant-based foods is key to nurturing a balanced microbiome, which is why experts like Dr. Will Bulsiewicz advocate for eating “30 plants a week” to maximize gut health and diversity. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. B, an award-winning gastroenterologist and author of Fiber Fueled, to explore how gut health can be optimized through personalized nutrition. As U.S. Medical Director of ZOE, Dr. B offers insight into the latest findings from the world's largest personalized nutrition study. He'll discuss the best foods for gut health, the surprising link between human connection and the gut, how to identify food intolerances, and strategies for tackling common issues like bloating. With over 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications and a large following on Instagram, Dr. B provides valuable, science-backed advice to help you transform your gut health and improve your overall well-being.
Fiber is often overlooked in discussions about diet, weight loss, and immunity, but it shouldn't be. Fiber is essential for digestive health, improving gut motility, and regulating bowel movements. It's also key for weight management, as high-fiber foods are more filling. Research shows that fiber can reduce LDL cholesterol, potentially lowering the risk of heart disease. Additionally, fiber lowers the glycemic load of foods, helping to prevent metabolic syndrome and related conditions. Fiber also plays a crucial role in microbiome health, acting as a prebiotic to support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which positively impacts immune function, mental health, and more. The issue? Most of us don't eat enough fiber or a wide variety of plants. My guest on this podcast is a gastroenterologist who literally wrote the book on fiber and will share his insights on how to heal your gut. Listen and learn: About fiber, resistant starch, and polyphenols as prebiotics Why you should aim to eat 30 plant foods weekly The importance of colorful plant foods How fiber transforms into anti-inflammatory short chain fats in your gut The reward vs. risks of fecal transplants Links: Will's site ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, MD, MSCI, is a board-certified gastroenterologist, gut health expert, and New York Times bestselling author of Fiber Fueled. Our guest today, Will Bulsiewicz, also known as Dr. B, is a gastroenterologist who is also the author of the books Fiber Fueled and The Fiber Fueled Cookbook. He lost more than 45 pounds when he switched to a plant-based diet and now has his own patients take control of their health and reverse their own digestive problems by following his fiber-fueled prescriptions. We first talked to Dr. B in 2020 when he was about to release his first book Fiber Fueled: The Plant-Based Gut Health Program for Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome. During our first episode together, he was nervous about how well it would do in a pandemic. Not to our surprise, it very quickly became a New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller. Today we talked to Dr. B about The Exam Room podcast, how to poop properly, and what to expect from the Fiber Fueled Cookbook that is soon to be released. He also answers important health, gut, and fiber questions taken from our Switch4Good Podcast Facebook group. He believes that all health starts in the gut, and we are honored to have him back on the show to explore exactly what that means. “Stop counting grams of fiber, start counting plants. If you start increasing the varieties of plants in your diet, you will naturally consume far more than the recommended amount of fiber. And that is a beautiful and exciting thing.” – Dr. Will Bulsiewicz What we discuss in this episode: - Why Dr. B recently left his medical practice - The Exam Room podcast - What to expect from the Fiber-Fueled Cookbook - How the health care system is flawed and why it is a complicated issue What “leaky gut” is What constipation really is and why it's important What GROWTH means to Dr.B How to poop properly How to stop counting grams of fiber and start counting plants instead Questions from the Switch4Good podcast Facebook group Resources: Visit his website - theplantfedgut.com Connect with Dr. B on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/theguthealthmd/ Preorder the Fiber Fueled Cookbook - https://theplantfedgut.com/cookbook/ Use code SWITCH for 25% off your order at MaxinesHeavenly.com Purality B12 Deal: https://puralityhealth.com/liposomal-b12/ to buy one B12 and get one free plus 35% off the rest of Purality's products Send us a voice message. I've spoken to 1000s of people about nutritional medicine in clinic. In most part, people who optimise their plates to contain more fibre, mostly plants and variety tend to thrive. They feel better, lighter, happier and in many cases it sparks a new zest for life. The trick is helping people maintain a habit of eating well consistently (which by the way is why I developed my app). But for the minority, the opposite is true. Whatever healthy items they include in their diet … their body reacts negatively. And it can set them up for a life of restriction, anxiety around eating a diverse collection of ingredients and a digestive system that is intolerant to many foods. If this is you. You're not alone. And there are solutions. It doesn't require a barrage of investigations, intolerance tests and supplements but it does require motivation and persistence. My guest today is Dr. Will Bulsiewicz (or "Dr. B") a gastroenterologist and the New York Times-bestselling author of Fiber Fueled and The Fiber Fueled Cookbook. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of ZOE, has authored more than twenty articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and you'll find him on social media as the @theguthealthmd and his website theplantfedgut.com.This is a long episode so for those of you who want the TLDR here it is.Fibre is super importantIt has connections with immune health, mental health, cognition, heart health and inflammation.Everyone's gut is unique and a diverse diet with mostly plants is a great starting point. However … many people have gut microbe imbalances that prevent them from eating a diversity of foods and particularly foods with high amounts of fibre that are paradoxically great for the gut.If this happens to be you, a strategy for improving your guts adaptability and ultimately creating a flexible eating method that allows you to eat tons of food is to:Keep a food diaryRule out other causes such as gallbladder dysfunction or constipationRestrict, Observe and ReintroduceConsider the wider impacts of lifestyle on your gut

Could sausage ever be as healthy as broccoli? This idea has caught fire through the concept of personalized nutrition. It's the idea that your body runs better on some foods and not as well on others. In theory, this means that junk food could be healthier than fruits and vegetables in some cases. But is that too good to be true? Dr. Will Bulsiewicz joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to explore what personalized nutrition actually is, what it could mean for the future of medicine, and whether sausage could actually be as coveted as broccoli for your health. Plus, they answer viewer questions from The Doctor's Mailbag - Universally healthy foods - Eating for your blood type - Microbiome and mental health Also, you'll discover why a traditional Chinese diet may be just what the doctor ordered to lower blood pressure when Chuck reports on a promising study on hypertension.
