In this week's News Roundtable episode, Chris Wright is joined by political commentators, Marina Purkiss, Edward Hardy, and political commentator and Communications Officer for the Institute of Economic Affairs Reem Ibrahim. This week's debate kicks off and remains with the issues surrounding Home Secretary Suella Braverman. She has yet again been called out for the use of toxic language in the public sphere, criticising the Metropolitan Police claiming they have a left-wing bias regarding their treatment of protesters, and calling the pro-Palestinian demonstrations ‘hate marches'. The panel analyses and discusses the significance of language in politics. In a similar vein, the panel discuss and disagree deeply over Carol Vorderman having to step down from the BBC and her radio show. The non-political radio host has been forced out due to her influential online presence as a rather left-wing political voice. The panel get to the bottom of the hypocrisy of this development, similar to that of Gary Lineker's situation some months ago. The panel reflect on the King's Speech and the very British constitution that continues this tradition. Is the world laughing at us?-        Suella Braverman, was she trying to get sacked with her rogue police-bashing article.-        The pro-Palestine protest on Remembrance Day and why the language around it is so important. -        Carol Vorderman forced to leave the BBC because of her political activism outside of her radio show. Is there a Conservative bias in the BBC, and is this cancel culture at play? -        Did King Charles enjoy reading out Rishi Sunak's policies in the State Opening of Parliament? And how the world is laughing at Britain's anachronistic traditions. We'd love to hear what you think of the episode at email@wrightonthenail.fm, or get in touch if you just want to say hi! WOTN Team 'I Hit The Nail Right On The Head' by Billy Bremner. © Fridens liljor/Micke Finell.Rock around the clock productions AB.www.rockaroundtheclock.co This episode was produced by Tom Platts This podcast is published by New Thinking: www.newthinking.com Explore New Thinking podcasts via our website: www.newthinking.com/podcasts

FLOYD ABRAMS: SPEAKING FREELY explores America's dedication to the foundational principles of free speech and free press through the groundbreaking work of attorney Floyd Abrams. A biopic of the First Amendment told through Abrams' important cases, we reveal how this legal giant helped transform the First Amendment from an oft-ignored principle into a bulwark of American democracy. Floyd Abrams: Speaking Freely follows the 50-year career of preeminent First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams. See how his landmark cases—from the Pentagon Papers to Citizens United to Clearview AI—helped define free speech as it is known today. Join Dan Abrams, Ari Melber, Nina Totenberg and more as they explore how Abrams' career has shaped major changes in law, public discourse and civic action since the 1960s. Political discourse in the United States is shaped by audacious ideas of what a society should be. But who are the influencers and disrupters of American political thought that have paved the way for the systems that we currently have—and those still to come? Director Yael Melamede joins us for a conversation on the many reasons why Floyd Abramis rightfully regarded as one of the most consequential advocates for this battered Anerican civil right. as well as how we came to this moment where free speech issues have never felt more complicated and urgent, and where the nation is wondering anew: what price are we willing to pay for free speech? The murders of four Portland women have now been classified as the work of a serial killer. Detectives have linked the murders to a man granted early release from his sentence.  Jesse Lee Calhoun, 38, was granted early release after he  joined a group of inmates fighting devastating wildfires.   Calhoun had been sentenced to four years in prison  for felonies including burglary, unauthorized possession of a stolen vehicle, and injuring a police officer and a police dog as  they attempted to arrest him.  Calhoun's clemency has been revoked, and he is back behind bars.  So far, Calhoun has been named a person of interest, not a suspect in the death of four women whose bodies were found within 100 miles of each other. I plan to present and discuss how I have used art to explore and express my political and philosophical concerns in two contexts: gender identity ideology and American Zionism. I will also attempt a brief summary of American law on the subject of freedom of expression, that will address some of the questions I've heard raised in recent FQT conversations and, hopefully, provide useful ideas for women to take from the private spaces to public ones. Bio: I was raised in the early years of American feminism in the mid-1970's. I am a wife of 40+ years, mother of two sons and two small grandsons. My professional training and work has been in the fields of philosophy, law and historical musicology, and lately, art. I've worked as a legal services attorney for the homeless, as a criminal prosecutor (advocating in cases of violence against women and children), appeals court clerk, and court-appointed child advocate. I spent decades as a semi-professional classical singer, and as fiber artist and community art teacher and leader, with a special interest in art as personal and political expression. Suzanne Vierling - USA - on The impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Warfare on Womanhood Bio: Dr. Suzanne Forbes-Vierling comes with 25 years of leadership experience in Higher Education, Mental Health, Forensic Science, Foster Care and Child Welfare, International consultation and Community Organizing. Her career has encompassed all levels of organizational leadership and management, including as an International Health and Human Services Organizational advisor serving the nations of Malawi, Chile, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Russia, Romania, Georgia, India and Philippines. How do you know what's true, and what's false? What's right, or wrong? How do you know... what you know? You likely heard all of it somewhere, and for you to hear it, somebody had to say it. Because for us to be able to figure out what's true - in order to form a more perfect union - we must be able to speak with one another, freely. "In my generation, it's all new, a black woman on the tour; I better be on my best behavior because I don’t want to mess it up for the next generation. So for [Coco] to have that freedom and to take advantage of that platform, it's fabulous." Leslie Allen is known as “The Professor” and she joins us this week to educate. After a career at USC, Allen competed in the 1970s and '80's, becoming the first black woman since Althea Gibson to win a WTA title. She would reach as high as No. 17 in singles and No. 10 in doubles. She's been a media director, a tournament director, a TV broadcaster, a WTA board director and is the CEO of Win4Life. The 63-year-old is thrilled to see young players like Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka speaking out during the Black Lives Matter movement as it's a freedom she wasn't granted during her era on tour. After always worrying about ruining it for the next black player, she isn't afraid to speak up now. She explains what upset her about the USTA's BLM statement, what exactly systematic racism is and how white people can make a difference, using Alice Marble in 1950 as an example.  Watch this episode on YouTube and Facebook. Claire Lehmann is the founding editor of Quillette, an online magazine dedicated to free thought and open inquiry. Founded in 2015, the magazine has already developed a large and growing readership that values Quillette's promise to treat all ideas with respect, even those that may be politically incorrect. As an Australian, Claire tells Tyler she doesn't think she could have started the magazine in America. Even in risk-loving San Fransisco, where this conversation took place, people are too afraid to speak their minds. "You celebrate entrepreneurs and courage in making money and that kind of thing, but there is a general timidity when it comes to expressing one's honest views about things," she tells Tyler. "I find that surprising, and particularly among people who are risk-taking in all sorts of other domains." She and Tyler explore her ideas about the stifling effect of political correctness and more, including why its dominant form may come from the political right, how higher education got screwed up, strands of thought favored by the Internet and Youtube, overrated and underrated Australian cities, Aussie blokes, and more.
