Get your surf boards out folks cause we are Escaping L.A.!! If you have never seen the movie or the original Escape From New York, just imagine if Han Solo had to keep doing little side jobs for the emperor to get out of trouble before he met Luke. John Carpenter's Escape From L.A., 1996. Directed by John Carpenter. Written by John Carpenter, Debra Hill and Kurt Russell. Produced by Debra Hill and Kurt Russell. Starring: Kurt Russell, Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Georges Corraface and Cliff Robertson.
In this episode of Lunchtime Movie Critics, we lace up our skates and take a deep dive into Miracle (2004), the film that turns Cold War tensions into the most rousing sports montage of all time. Starring Kurt Russell's aggressively Minnesotan accent as Coach Herb Brooks, this Disney-fied underdog story tells the true tale of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team—the scrappy college kids who took down the invincible Soviet Union and made Al Michaels' voice immortal.Join us as we dissect Russell's grizzled motivational speeches, debate whether hockey hair peaked in the ‘80s, and revel in the fist-pumping glory of one of the greatest sports movie climaxes ever filmed. Is Miracle the ultimate underdog story, or just another by-the-numbers sports flick with an overuse of slow-motion? Find out as we slapshot our way through this one—do you believe in podcasts?!
This week the lads take a look at two vastly different film. One a cult classic the other a festive film that may become a family favourite in time.John Carpenters The Thing is probably his best film to date. Starring Kurt Russell at his best this film is a must watch for sci-fi fans and still holds up today. It's worth watching for the practical effects alone. Hot Frosty isn't. Leaves are falling, the nights are getting longer, and the abandoned Chuck E. Cheese on the other side of our parking lot has temporarily become a Spirit Halloween store. It's officially Halloween season, and this week I have four horror films to recommend that I watch every year to get me into the Halloween spirit. First on my list is Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks' classic Frankenstein sequel/parody released in 1974. Not all of Brooks' films have aged well, but Young Frankenstein still stands up as a classic comedy. The film stars Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein's grandson, who travels to Transylvania to prove to the world his grandfather was not insane. After arriving he discovers his grandfather's notes and equipment and is ultimately able to reanimate a corpse… with mixed results. Wilder is joined on screen by Madeline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman, and Peter Boyle as the monster. Even though I seem to catch bits and pieces (no pun intended) of this on cable throughout the year, I put it on the list because it's best enjoyed all the way through from start to finish. If you remove this one from the shelv but change your mind, be sure to put it, and the candle, BACK.Second on my list is 1985's Silver Bullet, based on a Stephen King novella. In Silver Bullet, a small town in Maine (it's always a small town in Maine…) is under attack by a murderer that turns out to be a werewolf. After a young boy named Marty manages to wound the werewolf, he and his sister set out to determine the werewolf's identity. But when the moon is full, the hunters quickly become the hunted. Starring Corey Haim and Gary Busey, Silver Bullet is a classic that gets me into the Halloween spirit every year.Next on my list is John Carpenter's The Thing, released in 1982. I have long considered this film along with a few others like Jaws and Back to the Future to be essentially flawless films. I've watched The Thing a dozen times and there's not a thing I would change. It's the perfect combination of traditional scares and psychological terror. When researchers discover an alien life form that not only consumes people but can physically imitate them as well, a group of researchers quickly discover who among them they can trust — no one. Starring Kurt Russell and featuring a cast of familiar faces, The Thing is the perfect way to instill fear and paranoia before bedtime. The last film on my list is 1985's Fright Night, a film about a teenage boy who believes his next door neighbor may actually be a vampire responsible for the uptick in murders reported on the news. When Charley's family, friends, and even the police fail to believe him, there's only one person he can turn to: Peter Vincent, host of the late night horror-themed television show, Fright Night. The bad news for Charley is that by the time he discovers the truth about his neighbor, his neighbor is on to him. Fright Night is classic 80s horror — it's a little scary, a little silly, and a whole lot of fun. It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it recently.I hope you are as excited about Halloween as we are here at the Video Store Podcast. Help yourself to a complimentary pair of plastic vampire teeth and fake blood capsules (careful — they'll stain clothing) and take all the candy corn you want (we can never get rid of that stuff). I hope at least one of this week's movies gets you into the Halloween spirit. Let us know your favorite “must watch” films that get you into the Halloween spirit! This is a public episode. DoA and MonteCristo review the first five episodes of the new AppleTV+ show set in the MonsterVerse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Starring Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt, who plays the younger version of Kurt, and set in both the modern day and in 1950's flashbacks, the show ultimately disappoints. Perplexingly, the show contains surprisingly few actual monsters and spends an exorbitant amount of time on the psychological woes of its boring characters. Furthermore, Monarch fails to even explain any of the mysteries surrounding its titular organization, leaving viewers bored and with few answers gleaned from five hours of watching this show.

On this episode the Knerds review John Carpenters The Thing. Starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, and a bunch of other dudes.
Big Trouble in Little China is a seminal 80s movie, and it may just be John Carpenter's best work. Starring Kurt Russell—a frequent Carpenter collaborator—as the braggadocios Jack Burton, it takes a familiar formula (the action/comedy team up) and escorts it into a superbly crafted world of ancient Chinese mysticism and mayhem. It subverts audience expectations in other ways, as well. Burton—for all his witticisms—is not your stereotypical hero. He's actually more a bumbling, albeit well-intentioned, buffoon. The true hero is his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Their natural chemistry, along with the film's out of this world villains, creates something more than your average action movie. It's truly unforgettable, which is why it has persisted in the pop culture zeitgeist. They simply just do not make many movies as delightfully offbeat as this. That's also probably why it flopped, opening to just $2.7 million and finishing its run with just over $11 million. With a budget estimated to be as high as $25 million, that's not great. What is great is the following Big Trouble in Little China has amassed since its release. It may not have been in theaters long enough for word of mouth to spread, but its distinction as a cult classic is more than well earned now. So sit back, get hairy with Yeti Imperial Stout from Great Divide Brewing Co., and stay the hell away from the Chinese standoff! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. This time, we take a look at the body horror isolationist classic The Thing and along the way we ask what's the deal with Kurt Russell's hat, what kind of research happened at Outpost 31 and was this movie spoiled right from the beginning? Let's dive in…. Cast & Crew Directed by John Carpenter: Prior to directing The Thing, he had directed Halloween, The Fog and Escape from New York and had previously passed on the chance to direct this film but the opportunity came back around after directors Tobe Hooper and John Landis passed on the project. Starring Kurt Russell as MacReady: Russell and Carpenter previously collaborated on a television film Elvis as well as Carpenter's action cult classic Escape from New York. Russell was about 10 years into restarting his film career after an injury derailed his burgeoning baseball career Keith David as Childs: This was one of David's first major film roles after having become a prominent stage actor. He's since gone to have starred in other films like They Live, Platoon and and Mrs. Smith as well as several voiceover roles in video games like Halo and the Mass Effect series Wilford Brimley as Blair K. Carter as Nauls David Clennon as Palmer Also Starring Richard Dysart as Dr. Copper Charles Hallahan as Norris Peter Maloney as Bennings Richard Masur as Clark Donald Moffat as Garry Joel Polis as Fuchs Thomas Waites as Windows Before these actors were cast, many other actors were considered for these roles including Christopher Walken, Jeff Bridges, Nick Nolte, Sam Shepard, Brian Dennehy, Kris Kristofferson, Ed Harris, Tom Berenger, Scott Glen, Fred Ward, Peter Coyote, Powers Boothe, Lee Van Cleef, Jerry Orbach, Isaac Hayes and Ernie Hudson Rob Bottin's Legendary Creature Effects Universal had originally set the budget for The Thing at $10 million but this was increased following Carpenter's suggestion as well as storyboards for the visual and creature effects that were to be created by artist Rob Bottin. Carpenter took to Bottin's designs so well that he was able to influence the story as well as the actor's rehearsals. His suggestion that the Thing would retain a little piece of what it had previously assimilated and would be seen in future creatures. He also contributed the idea that whoever was taken over would not be aware that they are the Thing until it would start to reveal itself in a large group setting. Bottin worked so much on the film that he ended having to be hospitalized at different points in production for exhaustion, double pneumonia and bleeding ulcers. He also never took a day off for over a year and lived on the Universal backlot. Bottin was only 21 years old at the time and had previously worked on a horror film titled The Howling and due to his hospitalizations, special effects legend Stan Winston was brought on to assist in production specifically for the Norris Thing scene. Winston even refused to take a credit for his work and instead received a “thank you” in the final credits. What is the Message of The Thing? Carpenter is a fan of incorporating an overall message in his films. His later films are more overt with this messaging and early films hide this in some subtle ways. He has repeatedly mentioned that Halloween is meant to address the notion that the suburbs are safe. The majority of his films have this message in some way but Carpenter is also outspokenly liberal in his political views and this was apparent in the cult classic They Live about disguised aliens that have hidden among the population and have placed subliminal messages to unsuspecting people to “Purchase” and “Reproduce”. While The Thing lacks any sort of major political message, Carpenter addresses themes of nihilism, isolation and the fact that danger can be lurking even in the most remote part of the world. Mystery has continued to surround the themes of the film most specifically aroun...

"We're gonna hide this recording when we're finished. If neither of us make it, at least there'll be some kind of record. The storm's been hitting us hard now for 48 hours. We still have so much to address... One other thing: We think this story rips through your delusions of being a good person when you really understand it. Jared found some shredded self-righteousness earlier but the name-tag was missing. It could be anybody's. Nobody... nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired. That's what happens when you're just out for yourself. To kick off an entire month of horror films, we decided to start with one of the best, John Carpenter's The Thing. Unlike many new horror movies, The Thing builds suspense, and doesn't rely on cheap jump-scare tactics. Starring Kurt Russell, and pretty much no other big names, this film takes you into the Antarctic wilderness to discover alien life. Check out this episode to see what we exactly thought about this cult classic. If you haven't already, check out our website, nothingbutreelreviews.com. We have plenty of content on there that you won't find on our website!
