In the late 1980s millitant anti-fascists started a cultural project, Cable Street Beat, to counter the rise of a violent fascist music scene which was attacking left wing gigs and attempting to attract a disaffected youth.

This week on “After The Snow,” Rick shares some exciting news about his latest success in the boxing world. He and Dave catch up on his most recent trip to Boston, which is where Dave got his start under the moniker “Go-Go Dave” as the host of the Harvard radio show, Street Beat. The conversation evolves into each sharing their experiences as entrepreneurs; the mindset required, and some of the decisions needed to maintain a successful brand. Even with that, it always comes at a cost, which we see unfolding in “Jingle Bell Rock,” this week's episode (Season 2, Ep. 4) of Snowfall. Teddy gets Franklin a fake ID and a meeting with a banker to help shelter funds overseas, which Franklin feels uneasy about. The crew is feeling the pressure as they are being stretched thin from cooking up rock themselves, and wanting to get more of the profits. Franklin is having to tighten things up as word on the street is spreading, and his crew is left vulnerable. Gustavo and Lucia are being exposed to the real heart behind Pedro's fiancé… or so they think.Tap in! Prior to 2020, Jeff Fairbanks, Alex Jeun, and the rest of the Street Beat Brass Band worked steadily – playing their New York spin on New Orleans second line to venues and events all over the city. After a long, quarantined dry spell, the group was brought back to life by joining the Hells Kitchen Happiness Krewe – the madcap brainchild of Hally-Anne Devlin, a theatrical producer who would spare no expense to bring a little joy back to her beloved Manhattan. Stephen Butler of Smash Palace talks music, teaching music, writing songs, playing the Philadelphia music scene, playing live, the Quincy Jones lawsuit, Columbia records, and the music industry overall.Smash Palace signed with Epic Records in 1985. The new line-up included Brian Butler (lead vocals), Stephen Butler (lead guitar and vocals), Phil Rizzo (bass guitar), Harry Lewis (drums) and Greg Persun (rhythm guitar). The band's first self-titled LP was released in the fall of 1985 along with an MTV video of the first single, "Living on the Borderline" (directed by Nigel Dick). Smash Palace then toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada with Mr. Mister and the Cruzados. Greg DiDonato (keyboards) joined the lineup for the tour. When Smash Palace's A&R man, Dick Wingate, left Epic Records in 1985 he asked the band to come on over to his new label, Polygram Records. Unfortunately, once the band left Epic, the offer from Polygram melted away. The band recorded demos for tracks that were intended for their second album, including "Cold Wind", "Girl with the Stars in Her Eyes", "Stranger Than Strange" and "I'll Be There" (which was later reworked and recorded on the band's Over the Top CD release in 2004) and these tracks were played on Philadelphia radio station WMMR-FM's local music program Street Beat, but never officially released.

This week Pastor James Goodlet and Pastor Jan Tolbert discuss a little bit about what Lewis and Broad is and how the idea came to be. A lot has happened in the year 2020. Change is overflowing everywhere, forcing people to think differently. Everyone wants to hear good news and we are here to deliver it. Lewis and Broad is more than just a media; it is a storyteller that good things are here, and good things are coming. We may come off a little "churchy", but we promise to leave theology at the door. James mentioned the Pew Forum and Barna. Here at United Way, we recently said goodbye to Living Local co-producer Rebecca Schimke, who moved on to an excellent position with Palermo’s Pizza. In her honor, let’s revisit one of her favorite interviews from 2016. This week we talk to Shaquita and Adrienne, two women who spend a majority of their time on the streets. They aren’t homeless but spend their time helping youth who may be experiencing homelessness, young people who need help finding resources, or maybe just need a friend. They are outreach specialists on the Milwaukee Street Beat team through Pathfinders and the Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center.

"He’s a man who is not to be beat." [SIGN] Baker Street Beat is many things: it's a book. It's a website. But more importantly, it's Dan's personal passion that combines many of his life interests. In this episode, Dan Andriacco — author, Sherlockian, journalist and more — joins us to talk about his fascinating history with Sherlock Holmes, how he came to write a number of successful books, from the Sebastian McCabe / Jeff Cody series to a variety of Sherlockian pastiches, the people he has met, and the many interests that fuel his passion. And given that we're posting this on Easter weekend, it's completely appropriate that Dan co-founded a Sherlockian society called The Vatican Cameos. Tune in to hear the greatest compliment about Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes that Dan ever heard and how a session at a library record player started it all... The Deele - Material Thangz (Petko Turner Edit) The Deele was formed in 1981 and originally comprised local Cincinnati musicians drummer Antonio "L.A." Reid, bassist Kevin "Kayo" Roberson, vocalist/percussionist Darnell "Dee" Bristol, lead vocalist Carlos "Satin" Greene, guitarist/keyboardist Stanley "Stick" Burke, and guitarist Steve "Tuck" Walters. Reid, Roberson, and Walters had been members of a previous Cincinnati-based band, Pure Essence. Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, hailing from Indianapolis, would join later in 1981, and Walters left the band before they began recording their debut album, Street Beat. The group would record three albums in total during the 1980s, scoring scored several hit singles. The above-mentioned Street Beat album was released in 1983, and the following year, a single from this album, "Body Talk" became The Deele's first hit, reaching #3 on the R&B chart and #77 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. Burke left the band prior to the recording of a follow-up album. Recorded as a quintet, Material Thangz was released in 1985. It was not as successful as their debut album. Following a brief hiatus, during which Babyface recorded his debut solo album, Lovers, the band regrouped to record. They reached the apex of their career in 1987 with the release of their third album, Eyes of a Stranger, which produced two top-10 R&B singles: "Shoot 'Em Up Movies" and perhaps their best-known song, "Two Occasions." The latter track reached #4 on the R&B charts and cracked the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Music videos were made for both songs. The video for the "Shoot 'Em Up Movies" track was directed by Martin Pitts and produced by Mickey Shapiro. It was during this time that L.A. Reid and Babyface Edmonds began crafting their talents as songwriters for other artists. They wrote and produced "Girlfriend" (which featured backing vocals from Deele members[1] and became a top ten hit) for Reid's girlfriend, and eventual wife Pebbles. During this period, they also wrote and produced The Whispers' "Rock Steady." In 1988, encouraged by their songwriting success with other artists, both Babyface and Reid left The Deele and founded LaFace Records in 1989. At the beginning of the 1990s, Reid and Edmonds would become successful record producers. Although not as recognized as Reid and Edmonds, another Deele member, Kevin "Kayo" Roberson maintained his association with the two, and was an instrumental part of the production team's success behind the scenes as a songwriter, co-producer, and studio bassist.[2] Babyface would also embark on a very successful run as a solo artist. In 1993, Greene and Bristol reunited again as The Deele (without Reid, Edmonds, or Roberson)[3] to record the album, An Invitation to Love. This album found the group adopting a more new jack swing-based sound and incorporating rap into many of their songs. Failing to make a dent in the charts, the group called it quits later that same year. Their hit song "Two Occasions" was referenced by rapper The Game in the song "One Night" in 2006, and by Plies in his 2009 hit song, "Want It, Need It" featuring Ashanti. MF Doom samples the track "Shoot 'Em Up Movies" in his 1999 opus "Red & Gold". Download for free on The Artist Union
Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Mike Grant/Moods & Grooves on Facebook: goo.gl/IIyWhD @mikegrant50 http://www.big50entertainment.com/ At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin. Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills. During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open. During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast. Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance. In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Additionally, he’s remixed the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” been selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selected and participated in DEMF/Movement, and included in the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.
