This week we donned a smelly neon bib, distributed some tiny cones and shouted things like ‘THAT'S NEVER A PEN' all in order to win the attention of Karen Dobres, one of the sporting world's most genuine game changers. Advocating for equal budgets, facilities and recognition in women's sport with all the tenacity of a crunching, shin-pad obliterating tackle, Karen is the co-founder of Equality FC and the Sistership Network. Her new book, soon to hit the shops, is called Pitch Invasion and tells the tale of her experiences as a feminist on the board of Lewes FC, the world's first (hurray) and only (boo) equal football club. And, with all the creative energy of a box-to-box midfield dynamo, she's also helped establish the #CallHimOut initiative, has served as a judge on the UN Women UK Awards, managed a counselling service at Polygram Records and, just because she could, helped arrange the installation of a statue celebrating bisexual female pirates. It's an episode where we chatter ‘in and around' all things relating to her hopes for women's sport, the impact of equality on crowds and culture and the value of being an outsider.  This episode is proudly dedicated to Marios Christos Sfantos Follow Karen on LinkedIn. ///// Timestamps 06:10 - From Journalism Aspirations to Modelling 08:45 - Transitioning to Counselling and Music Industry 12:40 - Discovering Women's Football 15:31 - Feminizing the Football Environment at Lewis FC 18:14 - Impact of Equality on Crowds and Culture 24:48 - Challenges Faced by Women in Football 27:25 - Creating a Supportive Community through Football 30:37 - Football as a Vehicle for Social Change 32:06 - The Value of Being an Outsider in Football 34:15 - Pitch Invasion: Karen's Book Karen's Book Recommendations are: A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf Why Men Win at Work by Jill Whitty Collins /////

Emerging from the same mid-90s Chicago scene that saw bands like Veruca Salt, Loud Lucy, Menthol, Triple Fast Action, and Local H get signed to major labels, Fig Dish delivered alternative guitar rock that paid homage to the legends of Mt. Rockmore - Zander, Mascis, Mould, and Westerberg - under the Polygram Records (and subsidiaries) banner. Their discovery is the stuff of legend: the band sent demo cassettes to various major labels with a handwritten note from “Steve,” claiming to have found a band worth checking out, banking on the idea that everyone knows a Steve and the label would think it was a genuine tip. Despite their immediately catchy songs that could easily fit into any alternative rock radio playlist, the band (Blake Smith - vocals/guitar, Rick Ness - vocals/guitar, Mike Willison - bass, Andy Hamilton - drums) struggled to grasp the elusive brass ring. Their single “Seeds” was released with a video but saw limited play on MTV's 120 Minutes. Touring across the country, they opened for acts like Juliana Hatfield, Veruca Salt, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Owsley, and Walt Mink. However, their 1995 album, That's What Love Songs Often Do, produced by Lou Giordano, failed to make a significant impact. Their 1997 follow-up, When Shove Goes Back to Push, recorded under challenging circumstances, also ended up in used CD bins despite featuring some of the catchiest rock tunes of the year. In a last-ditch effort, the band filmed a video for “When Shirts Get Tight” featuring adult film stars in humorous, over-the-top scenarios. The video, too risqué for MTV, became more myth than reality. By 1998, Fig Dish's tenure with Polygram ended unceremoniously. They recorded new songs at Andy Gerber's Million Yen studio in Chicago, hoping for a second chance that never materialized. Smith and Willison went on to form Caviar (known for “Tangerine Speedo”), while Ness and Bill Swartz (who played drums on Shove) formed Ness. Recently, Forge Again Records from Chicago reached out to the band to release their two albums on vinyl for the first time. While the band agreed, navigating the bureaucratic red tape with record labels has been time-consuming. In the meantime, Forge Again asked if Fig Dish had any unreleased material, leading to the release of their 1998 demos as Feels Like the Very Second Time on vinyl. In this interview, Smith and Ness reveal there was no dramatic story behind the band's breakup; the members remain friends and stay in touch. While they won't be quitting their day jobs to relive their (less than) glory days, there's a strong possibility that Fig Dish will release new material in the near future.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Burn Bright For Now 13:54 - Pretty Never Hurts Outro - When Shirts Get Tight   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. A perfect pick for a Dig Me Out episode, Fretblanket never seemed to get the mainstream attention the way their peers did. Formed in Stourbridge, England when the members were still in high school, the band caught the attention of Polygram Records in ‘93 and signed a deal before singer/guitarist Will Copley had graduated. A year later, Junkfuel was released with the single “Twisted” gaining a modest amount of airplay on U.S. alternative and college rock stations. Guitarist Clive Powell wrote most of the guitar-rich songs which fit in alongside artists like Sugar, The Doughboys, The Wedding Present and Ride while Copley's grungy vocals earned comparisons to Kurt Cobain. Though they were very much of the time, the biggest touring exposure they had was opening for Oingo Boingo, a sad mismatch that likely didn't earn the band any new fans. In 1997, they released Home Truths From Abroad which leaned more into the Brit rock side of things than the grungier side and caused a minor MTV buzz with their video for “Into the Ocean.” Songs for a third album were recorded in Michigan with Tim Patalan (Sponge, Watershed) but shelved after it was apparent there was no longer label interest and the members went their separate ways. On March 30, 2023, that long lost album, The Distance In Between, was released as a way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fretblanket signing a record deal.   Songs in this Episode: Intro - Twisted from Junkfuel 13:06 - Digging Your Scene from The Distance In Between Outro - Into The Ocean from Home Truths From Abroad   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Fig Dish IS a 1990s rock band based in Chicago. The band signed to PolyGram Records in 1995 and released two full-length albums before becoming inactive in 1998. Fig Dish's sound was influenced by 80s college rock and indie bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements, and has drawn comparisons to Cheap Trick. They were part of a mid-90s Chicago rock scene that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and Local H. They were closely associated and often shared bills with those and other Chicago acts such as Triple Fast Action, Smoking Popes, and Hushdrops. The band's name was said to have been chosen for its resemblance, when pronounced, to the vulgar German phrase fick dich. That's What Love Songs Often Do, Fig Dish's 1995 major label debut album, which had been out of print for years, was re-released in April 2013. Chicago Magazine wrote that the band was a "folkloric Chicago outfit," and quoted Blake Smith's summary of the band's career: "We were too busy being the underdog Midwestern raging partying guys, and it killed us.... We just weren't very good at playing the game, and we drank a lot back in those days." On Jan. 14, 2023, the Music Center (link is external)in Los Angeles had a celebration concert to honor Jerry Moss. Many artists participated, and today's Listening Lyrics  plays some of their music. In 1960, Moss moved from New York to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Herb Alpert,(link is external) forming Carnival Records in 1962 and running the company from an office in Alpert's garage. Discovering that the name was already taken, they dubbed their new company A&M Records. In 1987, Moss and Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram Records for a reported $500 million. Both continued to manage the label until 1993, when they left because of frustrations with PolyGram's constant pressure to force the label to fit into its corporate culture. In 1998, Alpert and Moss sued PolyGram for breach of the integrity clause, eventually settling for an additional $200 million.

Based in Boulder, Rare Silk—originally a female trio consisting of sisters MaryLynn and Gayle Gillaspie and Marguerite Juenemann—started out revisiting tunes from the swing era of the late '30s and early '40s. At the 1978 inception of KGNU, a Boulder community radio station, they created a regular public access show. The three got their break in 1980 when they opened for Benny Goodman, “the King of Swing,” at Macky Auditorium in Boulder. Goodman fell in love with the girls' tight, precisely harmonized material and asked them to accompany his tour. Joined by male vocalist Todd Buffa, the innovative ensemble then began modernizing its approach with stylistic versions of Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea songs. An A&R exec at PolyGram Records soon heard Rare Silk's sound, and the group's debut album, New Weave, made its way to #2 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart. It was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal - Duo or Group at the 1984 Grammy Awards, and Buffa was nominated in the Arrangement - Two or More Voices category. Juenemann was replaced by Barbara Reeves, then Jamie Broumas. Rare Silk recorded two albums on the Palo Alto label and toured perpetually, winning over audiences with perfected harmonies, choreographed sequences and a diverse mixture of material. The group disbanded in 1988. MaryLynn Gillaspie returned to singing circa 2011 and released Secret Language, her solo CD produced by Kip Kuepper, in 2022.

L'album comprenait les populaires « Getting To The Good Part », « Motor Mouth » et « The Bomb ». “From Randy Rhoads to Precious Metal, Lindsey Buckingham to John Carter Cash and all points in between – like a stint working with Meredith Brooks, opening for Midge Ure or appearing with Monte Montgomery – the ongoing tale of singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Robin is a fascinating journey.” – Pollstar Janet Robin can be defined in a single word: Musician. Many people attempt to make music, but few earn that illustrious title. Those in this business reserve that label for the rare individuals who consistently demonstrate a high level of talent, perseverance, taste and sensitivity over a period of time. To these people making music is not simply a pastime; it is a matter of blood and guts. That a serious addiction to making music runs through Robin's veins is made clear from a quick review of her career. A Southern California native, Janet Robin's musical education began the moment she met her guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne). Under Rhoads' tutelage, Janet became an ace six-string player and, while still in high school, parlayed this education into a position as the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. Discovered by Rodney Bingenheimer of the legendary L.A. rock radio station KROQ, Precious Metal was soon signed to Polygram Records. Later moving to Chameleon/Capitol Records, Precious Metal released several albums, wrote with Heart, Poison and Cheap Trick, toured extensively and gained accolades from both fans and critics alike. Following the demise of Precious Metal, Janet was picked by Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, band in support of his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle (Reprise Records). A consummate pro, working with Buckingham profoundly influenced her own guitar playing, singing and songwriting, as well as her general approach to the music business. She has stated, “Lindsey became sort of a mentor and inspired me to do my own solo work.” This new direction led to her 1998 debut solo album, Open the Door. Released on her own label, Little Sister Records, Buzz Weekly described the CD as “smart, savvy, fuzzy, hooky pop.” She has seen songs from this album featured in film and television; most notably on the then popular T.V. show Felicity. Ever the road warrior, she supported the disc by opening for such acts as Heart, Colin Hay, Loudon Wainwright III and the Smithereens, steadily building a wide fan base. She has since continued to tour heavily and averages as many as 150 dates per year. READ MORE: http://getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

The new line-up included Brian Butler (lead vocals), Stephen Butler (lead guitar and vocals), Phil Rizzo (bass guitar), Harry Lewis (drums) and Greg Persun (rhythm guitar). The band's first self-titled LP was released in the fall of 1985 along with an MTV video of the first single, "Living on the Borderline" (directed by Nigel Dick). Smash Palace then toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada with Mr. Mister and the Cruzados. Greg DiDonato (keyboards) joined the lineup for the tour. When Smash Palace's A&R man, Dick Wingate, left Epic Records in 1985 he asked the band to come on over to his new label, Polygram Records. Unfortunately, once the band left Epic, the offer from Polygram melted away. The band recorded demos for tracks that were intended for their second album, including "Cold Wind", "Girl with the Stars in Her Eyes", "Stranger Than Strange" and "I'll Be There" (which was later reworked and recorded on the band's Over the Top CD release in 2004) and these tracks were played on Philadelphia radio station WMMR-FM's local music program Street Beat, but never officially released.

What is Radio Promotion? How to succeed in Radio Promotion. Munsey Ricci of Skateboard Marketing gets REAL!

The Real Deal On...Success!

Skateboard Marketing Ltd. Company Overview:  Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has been at the forefront of independent metal radio promotion for the past 30 years since forming in 1991. The company has worked with legendary rock and metal heavyweights such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Soilwork, Testament, Morbid Angel, Black Label Society and Kid Rock, among countless others. Skateboard Marketing operates within North America and is located in New York. Their concept is to get radio airplay in any place that has metal or rock programming. They still believe in artist development and building a fan base for the unknown artist. Every band has their time to shine, but that takes artist development.    Skateboard Marketing Ltd owner, Munsey Ricci, is a former PolyGram Records executive who was the Director of National Metal Promotion from 1989-1991 and created the first metal department for the label and all affiliated labels, including Mercury, Polydor, RooArt, and London Records. Ricci also worked for the famed Combat/In-Effect Records in Hollis, Queens. Ricci was also on the editorial staff and collated the magazine for CMJ Media and a former syndicated radio programmer prior to PolyGram Records. Ricci spent 5 years as MD/PD for his college station WQCC while attending college.    Covering the entire spectrum of radio with syndicated, satellite, commercial, and college metal. Skateboard Marketing covers over 350 stations nationally for the US and Canada. This includes all the syndicated, commercial metal and rock specialty shows with college and public radio. "It's any outlet where a record can be heard" Artist development starts on the street, in someone's bedroom on their stereo, or even a fan listening to something new in their car. Today a new band will have 20 fans, tomorrow they will have 50. It's all a stepping stone to bring something cool to the masses.  It all applies to heritage artists as well. The only difference is they sold 2 million records to go with it. It's about creating the new fan whether it's for Motorhead and Black Sabbath, or for new artists such as Misery Kills.    The company's staple roster consists of, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Biohazard, Ozzy Osbourne, Doro Pesch, and Sepultura  It's a huge pleasure to be  graced by talent on all levels. There is nothing better than getting on the phones in the morning and "Making something from nothing" Music is in the blood of every band, industry executive and fan.    The companies office is based 25 minutes east of Manhattan, in Neighboring Valley Stream. They have a staff of 2 people covering syndicated, commercial , and college radio, as well as social media on board. New York-based radio promotion powerhouse Skateboard Marketing Ltd., headed by music industry veteran Munsey Ricci, is celebrating its 30th anniversary of taking heavy metal and hard rock music to the airwaves.   “It's been 30 years already,” Ricci says. “Time seems to fly when you're having fun. I've been blessed and graced to have the opportunity to work with the artist roster we have. Every morning I get up and still live to walk into the office and do this gig. I just don't get tired of it and need more!”   Founded in 1991 by the former PolyGram Records executive, Skateboard Marketing Ltd. quickly established itself as the leader in radio and artist development with a focus on all formats of aggressive music for three decades. Love of music, longstanding relationships and profound respect from colleagues and artists have earned the company a reputation as the go-to company to for national radio promotion in North America.   “Munsey and Skateboard Marketing do what they do because they LOVE IT,” says SiriusXM's Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin. “There's no one in the world that is as seasoned and dedicated to the art of metal promotion. I've been helping Munsey spread the good gospel of metal for 25 years, and we're both just getting started! Congrats on 30 f'in years of dominance!”   Syndicated radio host and author Full Metal Jackie adds, “Munsey is integral to the heavy music scene. He carries the torch proudly and at this point he is basically a de facto member of most of your favorite metal bands. Cheers Munsey & Skateboard.”   These sentiments are echoed by the artist's Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has represented, with many noting the integral part the company has played in their success.   “Skateboard Marketing has been part of my team for 20 years now,” says Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. “They understand and connect with my fans and record buying customers which makes the business of music that much better and easier. Happy 30th Skateboard and thanks for all you do!”   Says Overkill vocalist Bobby Blitz, “Congratulations to Munsey and Skateboard on 30 years of keeping the airwaves chock full of the heaviest metal! For decades now we call him the 6th member in the Overkill camp, as he has gone above and beyond to help bring our craft to those who crave it. Happy anniversary Skateboard, from Chaly and the boys!”   Singerman Entertainment's Todd Singerman notes, “Skateboard Marketing, under the enthusiastic stewardship of Munsey Ricci, has helped consistently propel Motörhead's music to the ears and hearts of thousands upon thousands of ears for over three decades.  Munsey remains that rare combination of class and action.”   Add Wendy Dio, “Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing have supported every Dio record throughout Ronnie's career and continue to support us.”   While Director of National Metal Radio Promotion at PolyGram Records, Ricci created the first metal radio department for the label and all of its affiliates, including Mercury Records, Polydor Records, RooArt and London Records, where the artist roster included bands like Mortal Sin, Onslaught, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, Doro Pesch, The Scorpions, Rush, Tony MacAlpine, and Vinny Moore.   Ricci also previously worked for CMJ Media and Combat/In-Effect Records, and programmed radio for five years prior to his label stint, learning and working next to some of the most influential people in the radio promotion world and leading to the success of Skateboard Marketing Ltd.   “I've had the pleasure of knowing Munsey for close to 25 years,” says Rob Rush, Program Director/PM Drive Jock 94.3 The Shark Long Island. “He is a consummate professional and has always gone above and beyond for the bands that he promotes, and the radio stations that play his bands. He is a true class act and I'm proud to call him one of my best friends! Here's to 30 more years of Munsey and Skateboard Marketing!!!”   SiriusXM Volume's “TrunkNation” host Eddie Trunk conquers. “I've known and worked with Munsey for all 30 years of Skateboard Marketing and beyond,” he says. “He's always had a great passion for rock and metal music and all the projects he works. All the best for the next 30 to all at Skateboard!”   Seeing a void for heavy music in the radio trades, Ricci launched Metal Contraband in 2016. Metal Contraband, in conjunction with Radio Contraband, fills that gap as a destination for labels, management and artists looking for accurate information, including a metal chart consisting of commercial, syndication as well as large college stations, a metal news section for up-to-date news on tours and festivals, ad dates and street dates. Also included is an overall release schedule for metal add dates at radio. Metal Contraband has become the most reliable source to gauge the success of a record at radio.   Adds Joey Z of longtime Skateboard client Life Of Agony, “It's hard to believe that Munsey and the team at Skateboard Marketing have been grinding it out for all of us for 30 years. Life Of Agony is so grateful for all the help and support the team has given us throughout the years... We wish them continued success for at least another 30!!”   “Munsey is the only metal radio game in town,” says Adrenaline PR's Maria Ferrero. “Period.”    The company's roster has ranged from the smallest to the biggest heavy metal and hard rock bands. Its staple roster consists of Motörhead, Overkill, Testament, Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Death Angel, Soilwork, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Sepultura, Soulfly, and many labels including Napalm, Nuclear Blast, Century Media, E- One Entertainment, Warner Music, BMG, Sony, Pavement, Metalville, Spinefarm, Fearless and Universal. Skateboard Marketing Ltd. has also worked on radio campaigns with Iron Maiden, Monster Magnet, Crowbar, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Doro Pesch, Veil Of Maya, At The Gates, Body Count, High On Fire and many others.   “Rip Magazine and Skateboard Marketing rolled loud and proud together back in the day,” says Lonn M. "Paula Perry"Female hip-hop MC from Brooklyn, NY. People first heard Paula Perry as a member of Masta Ace, INC, where she proved to be far more than simply a token female crew member. She struck out on her own with her debut single "Paula's Jam," which was a monster underground hit. And she soon released a slew of singles, including "Extra, Extra" produced by Premier. She eventually wound up on Motown Records, but her album, Tales From Fort Knox, got lost in the system. Life and work. Paula Perry grew up in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, an area that at the time consisted mainly of prefabricated blocks of social housing (so-called projects ). It was discovered by rapper Uneek, also from Brooklyn, who introduced her to Masta Ace . In 1992, with Masta Ace, Perry recorded a song called Kick It On The One , intended for the second solo album by Masta Ace, Shelf Life . However, since Masta Ace overcame with his label Cold Chillin ', there was no longer the release of this album. The already completed songs were released years later on two EPs. The recorded with Paula Perry song is located on the first of these two discs, on Shelf Life Vol. 1 , a 2013 published and limited to 300 copies pressing on Chopped Herring Records. After separating from Cold Chillin 'Masta Ace founded the Masta Ace Incorporated crew (Masta Ace, INC.) And joined the group on the label Delicious Vinyl. Paula Perry was also included in the crew. Together, the album SlaughtaHouse was released in 1993. On the occasion of the tenth birthday of the video music show Video Music Box , which started in 1983, Paula Perry and Masta Ace were able to perform their song Who You Jackin from the SlaughtaHouse album live. After Perry had canceled an early tour of the group because she preferred her own professional career of uncertain music career, she then toured regularly with Masta Ace, INC. By her own admission, she received only for these tour performances money from the record label, but not for their participation in the albums. [1]Two years later, in 1995, the crew released the second album called Sittin 'On Chrome . This made it to # 19 on the Billboard Top R & B / Rap album charts and remained in the Billboard Top 200 for months. In 1996, Paula Perry released her first 12 " solo as a solo artist entitled Paula's Jam (on Loose Cannon Records, a 1994-96 imprint of PolyGram Records, whose best-known artist was Buju Banton ). The song received in the music press partly outstanding reviews. In a review it was said:24-year-old Brooklynite Paula Perry fluted glasses of Cristal. "" If we were judging female MCs these days on verbal skills instead of puny poetry, then Lil 'Kim and Foxy Brown would revert to their given names and serve. ""If rappers were to be judged on their verbal abilities and not on their sexualized gutter language, Lil 'Kim and Foxy Brown would have to end their careers (" take their bourgeois name back ") and 24-year-old Paula Perry from Brooklyn would be champagne (" Cristal ") a champagne brand) in crystal glasses. "- Charles Aaron : in the music magazine Spin , issue February 1997, p. 92It was followed in 1998 by the song Down To Die For This (on the label Motown ) as well as collaborations with the Lost Boyz ( The BQE ) and other rappers (Nicki D, Paula Perry, Rah Digga , Heather B , Precious P & Bahamadia - Six-pack ).With the single produced by DJ Premier and recorded at the D & D Studios in New York , Extra !! (in 1998 on Motown) in the style of an extra page of the fictional newspaper Fort Greene Chronicles on her already completed and raring album titled Tales From Fort Knox (the title is a nod to her birthplace Fort Greene, Brooklyn) be pointed out. The song was played internationally on the radio and was also mentioned in the German music press:"Refined by the golden producer hands DJ Premiers, this track delights Paula Perry's debut album [...] from the very first second. The ingenious mixture of hypnotic minimal beats, a gripping funk groove and a voice from which one would like to be told a few stories, captivates sustainably. "- Norbert Schiegl : in the music magazine JUICE , issue 5-1998, p. 82However, the aforementioned album was never released, allegedly because the label (Mad Sounds Recordings, an existing in the 1990s and specialized in hip-hop sublabel Motown ) intended for the release and promotion funds instead for an album by Queen Latifah ( Order In The Court ) used. Most promo CDs of the 17-song album were destroyed by the label, although there had already been reviews in music magazines. Allegedly, there are only fewer than ten copies today, so that individual promo CDs of the album are traded on the Internet at top prices. In addition to the previously published single tracks, the album contained productions of Easy Mo Bee , Clark Kent and Domingo. Guests included Kelly Price and Perry's mentor, Masta Ace, and Que 45, with whom she has a son. Masta Ace produced under the pseudonym Ase One also four songs of the album. Two years later appeared with Y'All Chickens Make Me Laugh another 12 "of the artist under her real name (this time on the label Fully Blown Recordings), which was also played internationally on the radio. One last solo release available on a physical sound carrier was the 12 " I'm So Ghetto / Watch Ya Head , released under the pseudonym" The God Mommie "(in 2003 via Familliar Faces Records). Since then, Paula Perry came out only on the Internet published mixtapes ( Paula Perry The Godmommy, 6 , 2009, and Take Another Shot At It , 2012), as well as through short videos in which she directed herself.Although Paula Perry made a name for herself in her hip-hop underground through her early songs ( Paula's Jam and Extra, Extra !! were underground hits and made it into the Hot R & B Singles of the Billboard charts), she finished her Career as a musician, without ever having made the commercial breakthrough as a solo artist. Janet Robin Biography “Working with Janet was an unforgettable experience. She followed her spirit – no limits. Janet’s love for her art is evident in her impassioned musicianship and inspired songwriting. The music we created together, vibrant and full of energy, encapsulates all that she is.”-John Carter Cash (Producer, owner Cash Cabin Studios) “From Randy Rhoads to Precious Metal, Lindsey Buckingham to John Carter Cash and all points in between – like a stint working with Meredith Brooks, opening for Midge Ure or appearing with Monte Montgomery – the ongoing tale of singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Robin is a fascinating journey.” – Pollstar Janet Robin can be defined in a single word: musician. That a serious addiction to making music runs through Robin’s veins is made clear from a quick review of her career. A Southern California native, Robin’s musical education began the moment she met her guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne). Under Rhoads’ tutelage, Robin became an ace six-string player and, while still in high school, parlayed this education into a position as the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. Following the demise of Precious Metal, Robin joined Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham’s band in support of his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle (Reprise Records). A consummate pro, working with Buckingham profoundly influenced Robin’s guitar playing, singing and songwriting, as well as her general approach to the music business. This new direction led to Robin’s 1998 debut solo album, Open the Door. Robin has since continued to tour heavily and averages as many as 150 dates per year. Encouraged by the warm reception of her debut, Robin released three more albums on Little Sister including the acoustic After the Flood which was recorded in Laurel Canyon and features “Beautiful Freak” which has since become a fan favorite and one of Robin’s defining songs. Also among these records is 2007’s Days of Summer. Recorded with producers David Bianco (Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, Mick Jagger) and Steve Baughman (Eminem, 50 Cent), this acoustic based EP is the work of an artist willing and able to explore the poignant emotional states of adulthood while avoiding the stereotypes brought on by most acoustic singer-songwriters. Working on the album was an experience that greatly affected her style and led Robin to many new and exciting opportunities including multiple tours in Europe. 2012 here in the USA, saw Robin release her album Everything Has Changed that bridges the gap between passionate acoustic music and gutsy rock n’ roll. With the help of her dedicated fan base, Robin was able to raise the funds ($20,000) for that studio effort. The loyal support enabled her to team up with producer John Carter Cash (Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at Cash Cabin Studios outside of Nashville. The son of Johnny and June, Carter Cash was a producer on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and produced several records with his father as well as a Grammy Award winning record for June. Built by Johnny in 1979, this studio is where the country legend recorded much of his later work including his final recording, American V: A Hundred Highways, which was released posthumously and co-produced by Rick Rubin and John Carter. Robin had previously released “Everything Has Changed,” in Europe, with Hypertension Music based in Hamburg, Germany. Coupled with the strength of her growing European following and introduced to the German based label by friend and frequent touring partner Colin Hay (Men At Work), Robin signed a licensing and distribution deal with Hypertension for a Winter 2010 European release of Everything Has Changed. The company also did the booking for Robin throughout Europe and after the initial release in Europe, she secured a January 2010 tour with Midge Ure (Ultravox – co-organizer of Live Aid, Band Aid and Live 8). Janet enjoyed the experience of working with Cash so much that she returned this 2016 to record her latest studio effort "Take me as I am" again with John Carter Cash as executive producer and Chuck Turner producing and engineering: "We have talked at great length about this project and he understands my desire and vision to record an album that is representative of the energy brought out in my live performances," Robin says of John Carter Cash. "It’s just great to work with a producer that lets me be myself, yet brings out the best in my work. There weren’t many restraints working with John and the vibe and history at Cash Cabin is overwhelmingly inspiring. John seems to "get me." The official release for "Take me as I am" in the USA will be Oct. 17th, 2016 and the European/UK one will be in January 2017. She has since had several successful headlining tours in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, UK, and France where she plays solo acoustic shows, and with a her band, to sold out crowds in clubs (200-400 cap venues) and festivals (1,000's) across Europe. Janet recently finished a 34 date whirlwind summer tour in 5 countries in Europe, culminating with a featured solo performance at the renowned "Blues & Jazz Festival" in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. In addition to pursuing her solo career both in the U.S. and abroad, few musicians are able to work with the great variety of artists that Robin has been fortunate enough to be around. Besides the aforementioned Lindsey Buckingham, Robin has toured, performed with, recorded, or written songs with Tommy Emmanuel, Peppino D’Agostino, Meredith Brooks, Monty Montgomery, Michelle Shocked, Maia Sharp, Marcy Levy (co-writer with Eric Clapton on “Lay Down Sally”), Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Garrison Starr, Anne McCue and many more. Her most recent side-woman gig was the touring guitarist of Air Supply in 2009. In 2015, She was featured on the bill for the prestigious "All Star Guitar Night" which features some of the top guitar players in the world, during the LA NAMM convention. Touring nearly 150 dates a year with her own project, she has seen her solo career rise to higher and higher levels each year. Robin has also had songs placed in TV and films such as “One Life to Live,” “All my Children,” “Felicity,” “Free Enterprise,” and many more. She has also recently completed the original score for the short film “Traces” directed by Joseph Culp (actor Robert Culp’s son) and the film was accepted into the prestigious Palm Springs Short Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Awards, in June 2012. In January of 2015, Janet was also hand-picked to coach and consult actress Jennifer Jason Leigh for 2 months on location and in Los Angeles for a special guitar scene in the Quentin Tarantino film, "The Hateful Eight." The actress was nominated for an Academy Award. And in June/July of 2015 she was also hand picked for the guitar position in the musical "Girlfriend" to rave reviews at The Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, California. Along with Janet's busy solo career she has started a side project featuring 4 amazing guitar players- "The String Revolution." Combining 4 guitarists each with their own unique contribution to a "band" sound. They have finished their first release and it was mixed by the prestigious Matt Hyde in London who worked previously with famed guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela. The record was released Oct. 15, 2016 and touring dates to follow. However, one need not base their judgment on Robin solely on those with whom she has been associated. Only a listen to her albums or a ticket to one of her shows will prove the opening claim to be true. For what underlies the Janet Robin labels of singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and road warrior is a single word: musician. After delivering nearly two decades of honest music, Angela Johnson has nothing left to prove. A newly liberated Johnson returns ready to party. Culling the funky sounds of that twilight period between the end of disco and the height of the funk era, Johnson's production rediscovers the rhythmic grooves, propulsive basslines, and memorable chords that once poured from live instruments instead of technology. Johnson gifts her listeners with that rare music her fans can both step to and be moved by, the kind once commonplace “On The Radio.” With It's Personal, Angela tears down the final wall between her perfected image for the stage and the real-life woman who works hard and sometimes stumbles in her effort to keep it sexy for her husband, be a shining example for her daughter, maintain the esteem of her industry, and deliver the kind of music and performances that contributes something real in the lives of her fans. No more illusion, just Angie. Born for music, Johnson enrolled in SUNY Purchase to further study violin. At SUNY, she met her future Cooly's hot-box bandmates and songwriting partner, Christian Urich. Together the eclectic soul and acid jazz band landed a deal with Polygram Records that ended almost before it begun. In addition to her strong family upbringing, the secret weapon that has allowed Johnson to keep so many balls afloat over the last 17 years is her marriage to her manager and Purpose Music co-founder Russell Johnson. The dynamic duo has demonstrated the anti-thesis of every stereotype about Black love, Black family, and the legendary horror stories surrounding female artists with managing husbands. Angela's comic sensibilities are complemented by Russell's straight man stability & orderly business savvy.

Johnson gifts her listeners with that rare music her fans can both step to and be moved by, the kind once commonplace “On The Radio.” With It’s Personal, Angela tears down the final wall between her perfected image for the stage and the real-life woman who works hard and sometimes stumbles in her effort to keep it sexy for her husband, be a shining example for her daughter, maintain the esteem of her industry, and deliver the kind of music and performances that contributes something real in the lives of her fans. No more illusion, just Angie. Born for music, Johnson enrolled in SUNY Purchase to further study violin. At SUNY, she met her future Cooly’s hot-box bandmates and songwriting partner, Christian Urich. Angela’s comic sensibilities are complemented by Russell’s straight man stability & orderly business savvy. This radio art “Rock Story” was produced by Louise Burns in 2010. The text is from a letter she intercepted while working at PolyGram Records in the early 80s. It is based on a piece of fan mail to the group Kiss, written at the time when the group decided to perform without their traditional makeup (1983 – a decision the eventual went back on). This decision upset much of the Kiss Army. This fan mail is the basis for the text. It is performed by Tia Ouimet, Louisa Sage, Detroit Burns and Fortner Anderson as the voice of God. It aired on If You Got Ears and is intro’ed by Alex Moskos.
