Asia hosted recent multilateral meetings but it is the US' bilaterals with India and Vietnam that really matter. Synopsis: Every fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the biggest global talking points with expert guests. The East Asia Summit in Jakarta, and the G20 in New Delhi, broadly solidified US relations in the region, but it is the bilaterals with India and Vietnam that really mattered. The US was represented in Jakarta by Vice-President Kamala Harris. But the G20 saw President Joe Biden attending and supporting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's moment as global statesman in his role as chair of the grouping. In contrast, China's President Xi Jinping was absent. New Delhi also saw a reiteration of the increasingly close US-India relationship. Of equal significance perhaps in terms of competition with China, was President Biden's trip to Hanoi, Vietnam, where the two countries formally elevated their relationship. To unpack the significance of these meetings, ST's US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh hosts two guests in this episode: 1. Ambassador Scot Marciel, the former US diplomat to Myanmar, Indonesia and Asean, who is now a senior advisor at Bower Group Asia 2. Dr Lynn Kuok, Shangri-La Dialogue senior fellow for Asia-Pacific security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies Highlights (click/tap above): 3:40 Why the G20 cemented India's image as a global diplomatic and strategic player 5:26 Why the so-called "double upgrade" of the US-Vietnam relationship is significant 6:18 Why Asean's and the world's approach to Myanmar has been flawed 11:08 Why the US focus should be a lot less on talking to South-east Asia about China, as the region already knows China well 14:35 Do US administrations really understand South-east Asia well enough and how to engage the region? Do US state governors have emergency powers to suspend the Second Amendment? That's our topic today. The Democrat governor of New Mexico believes she has the legal authority to suspend a constitutional right. We're going to look at her shocking press conference last Thursday, and talk with Mr. Anthony Segura, executive director of the New Mexico Shooting Sports Association. New Mexico's Democrat Governor Gun Grabber Grisham arbitrarily decreed last Thursday that she has the legal power to suspend the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. Gov. Grisham justified her unconstitutional action by first declaring a public health emergency. No, there wasn't another outbreak of the Fauci-Wuhan manmade biological warfare virus. And it wasn't an outbreak of Hantavirus spread by New Mexico's desert rodents. She declared a health emergency over gun shootings committed by criminals and illegal immigrants who are protected by radical leftists who control Gov. Grisham's Democratic Party. Her solution to a crime problem is to disarm law-abiding citizens so that they are defenseless when in public places amongst the criminals who will still be armed. Gov. Grisham's illegal and unconstitutional decree applies to the City of Albuquerque and surrounding Bernalillo County. It will be in effect for the next 30 days and can be extended. It bans all citizens from carrying firearms in public, including citizens with concealed carry permits. Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Rising tensions between Washington and Beijing have had significant impacts on international trade in the form of US 301 Tariffs on a wide range of imports. In this episode, Birgit Matthiesen and Leah Scarpelli highlight what businesses need to know. Highlights of the conversation include: Do US 301 tariffs (the tariffs) apply to all products entering the US? Do these 301 tariffs apply to all products entering the US market? Can an importer request an exemption or waiver of these duties, and if so, under what conditions and how? Do the tariffs apply to products with inputs or components from China that were assembled and exported from elsewhere? Is the 301 tariff applied at the time of import separate and apart from other tariffs? What can we expect in 2022?

After a stint of being a comedian, Sara Polon started to spiral downhill and it wasn’t until she decided to do a triathlon, that she started to move her life around. But how did she decide to feed herself? With her mother’s soups of course. And that’s kind of how Soupergirl started. With constantly changing innovative flavors such as Split Pea Mint and Mexican Black Bean Sweet Potato and speedy delivery service, Soupergirl is growing fast. Soupergirl has been featured in the press multiple times and has critical acclaims of the taste and health benefits of the Polon’s family soup. Rumor has it, they’ll be appearing on Shark Tank very very soon. Check the show notes for more details. Anyways, super insightful interview with Sara Polon. I learned a ton about passion, motivation, and high pressure processing. A quick note, we talk about Alexa during this interview and while editing, Alexa added 5 apples to my shopping cart… NEW Sponsor - FoodLabelPro.com Is your product packaging compliant with the new FDA rules? Daily Candy – begged them to not get the scoop What is the hardest part of the business?: Growth is hard. You have to keep people interested, loyal and still have great quality What are ways to manage growth: Try to hire proactively. Some of the worst mistakes I’ve made was reactively hiring. Do you have any books about leadership?: Actually. No. It’s more about people. How do you choose advice?: You have to be passionate about it. There’s barely any guidance for this. You need a lot of physical assets that are hard to get. More people are getting sick in food because your food comes from everywhere Maker’s Space shuts down Cottage Industry Laws One thing in the food industry you’d like to know more about?: The future. Things are changing so rapidly. The tension between retail, farmer’s market, so much technology is going on. Trends will boom, but there are niches that will never go away Coconut Oil Who inspired you to get into food?: My mother and Michael Pollan What’s your favorite kitchen item?: Just a knife and a cutting board. I also use my Vitamix. However, to make soup, you just need a knife and cutting board Food Mills Why are you closed on Friday and Saturday?: I’m Jewish and we’re a kosher company so I have to follow the law. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but I’m glad that it forces me to have a vacation How many of your customers are orthodox jewish?: A lot of my customers are not orthodox and vegan. We get it from a kosher bakery Any advice to get into the food industry?: Life is short, do it! Regret is the worst feeling in the world. Start small, don’t invest too much until you’re ready. A wave of corporate inversions over the past several years has generated substantial debate in academic, business, and policy circles. The core of the debate hinges on a couple of key economic questions: Do US tax laws disadvantage US-domiciled companies relative to their foreign competitors? And, if so, does inversion reduce or eliminate that tax disadvantage, and increase the competitiveness of US multinational firms for making investments both abroad and at home? In a B-School for Public Policy seminar, Professor Michael Knoll addressed these questions and their implications for tax reform discussions, drawing insight from newly published research. He joined Lori McMillan, law professor at Washburn University in Kansas, and Daniel Hemel, assistant professor of law at the University of Chicago, in the Knowledge@Wharton Business Radio studio for an interview with host Dan Loney. Flavor is coming! The iconic Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” contest is back with three new finalists and their amazing flavor creations all in the running for the $1 million grand prize! In an exciting twist, flavor fans nationwide were asked to submit their latest and greatest ideas for the next great potato chip flavor through a “pitch” that captured the inspiration behind their flavor ideas. Now, three of those creations will be brought to store shelves for potato chip lovers to try, share and fall in love with. In July 2012, Cheesy Garlic Bread submitted by Karen Weber-Mendham, a children’s librarian from Land O’Lakes, Wis., was selected as the first million-dollar winner. The contest returned to the U.S. for a second time in Jan. 2014 where Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger submitted by Meneko Spigner McBeth, a nurse from Deptford, NJ, was crowned the winner. And last but not least, in 2015 Southern Biscuits and Gravy submitted by Hailey Green, a travel agent from Noblesville, Ind., was crowned the third million-dollar winner. Now, it’s time to see what flavors have made it to the final running, vying for the most fan votes.

Then we come up with some alternatives of our own to add to the list. Is the Federal Reserve waiting for a “perfect moment” that will never materialise to raise interest rates? That’s the view of Alexandra Frean, The Times US Business Editor, who says the Fed is in danger of missing their moment. She tells us why the upcoming Fed meeting on interest rates is seen as so important to investors and also explains the effect China has on the possibility of a rate rise. Do US voters care that much about the economy though? Not if the Republican nominations is anything to go by, she argues. Meanwhile Kathryn Hopkins, The Times property correspondent, tells us why she has started to sound like a broken record when it comes to housing supply and demand in the UK. Safe as houses? Think again. Richard Fletcher, The Times Business Editor, quizzes Kathryn on whether changes made by the Chancellor to buy-to-let mortgages means trust is ebbing away from brick and mortar as a safe investment. They all join presenter Robert Miller in this week’s podcast from The Times’ Business team.... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The US State Department has voiced displeasure with Israel's appropriation of 400 acres of land in the Gush Etzion settlement block as 'state-owned land,' and has demanded that Israel's government rescind the controversial designation. Do US demands challenge Israeli sovereignty? Bobby Brown, former adviser to Prime Ministers Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, claims that Israel has full rights to designate the land following an extensive legal investigation, while VOI's Dan Diker, former Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress, suggests that the timing of the announcement is problematic.
We review the 2014 Lay's Do Us a Flavor flavors: Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Mango Salsa, Wasabi Ginger, and Cappuccino.
