They may have been a B list, 1st wave band from the 80's, but this album is a pleasurable A in our book.  A nice cross between Blondie, Devo and Kraftwerk. Terri Nunn is a babe, with a high, but powerful and sexy voice. Great Bass player, Great Synths on World of Smiles, and even the few Guitar solo's ripped. It went platinum, but it seems forgotten. We believe it deserves better. The hits on this album were "Sex, I'm a..." and "The Metro".  "Masquerade" gets a lot of listens, but we put it as a non hit. We both felt the hits were better as a group, but not by much. Fun podcast to make as well. Michael Scott from the Office starts the intro with "Sex! A Breath of Fresh Air
TERRI NUNN on BERLIN's 45 year legacy, motherhood, music and regrets. A conversation with one of the female pioneers of the music industry and how she's survived it.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2023 52:00

Singer songwriter and actress TERRI DUNN is best known for being one of the creators and the front person for the 80s band BERLIN. One of the female pioneers in an industry so heavily dominated by men, Terri tells us how difficult it is to be a woman in the music industry due in part to the amount of traveling required. She says that the pandemic allowed her to spend more time with her daughter, who had become depressed and she is very grateful for the opportunity to rekindle their relationship.  Terri Dunn is a woman who has survived the music industry for 45 years and this week she shares the genesis of the band and the music itself.   Terri tells us the band grew out of a group called The Toys, formed in 1978 in Orange County, California, by John Crawford (bass guitar), Dan Van Patten (drums), Chris Ruiz-Velasco (guitar), and Ty Cobb (vocals). After a few shows, the band changed its name to Berlin, discharging Cobb as lead singer in the process. After a brief stint with Toni Childs as lead singer, Terri Nunn joined the band after answering an ad through the Musicians Contact Service in Hollywood in 1979. Despite its name, Berlin did not have any known major connections with the capital of Germany; the name was chosen to make them seem European and exotic. They were inspired by the keyboard work of Kraftwerk, Devo, Sparks and The Screamers. The band's first single, 'A Matter of Time,' was released in 1979 and the group appeared on television for the first time. Nunn left the group later that year to pursue an acting career forcing the band to replace her.. The band released the 1980 album ‘Information', without her but the band struggled to sign with a mainstream label so by later that year, Berlin had effectively broken up. Terri Nunn rejoined the band as singer in 1980 and they released a double A-sided single, 'Tell Me Why' / 'The Metro'. The single was intended as a one-off, since Crawford was by then focusing on his new band and regarded Berlin as a side project. However, the single was a success, helping to finance the EP album, Pleasure Victim. In 1984, the band released their next album, Love Life, and the single 'No More Words', whose subsequent video saw Terri Nunn and bandmates re-enact a Bonnie and Clyde-style car chase and shoot-out, became their first top-20 hit. 'Take My Breath Away' (from the movie Top Gun) became their best-selling single in 1986 and a huge international hit, but also their last big hit. The band's sound was innovative at the time, incorporating synthesisers in a way that hadn't been heard before in America. This innovation caught the attention of MTV in 1982, providing Berlin with a larger platform to showcase their music and garnering more significant attention. The success of the band was undoubtedly influenced by Terri's captivating presence in their videos, drawing in fans and solidifying Berlin's prominence in the music scene. During our conversation Terri delves into her experiences joining Berlin and how opportunity and passion intertwined. Grateful for the chance to be part of such a revolutionary musical project, Terri discusses auditioning for John Crawford under false pretences and the importance of following one's dreams to overcome challenges and explore new opportunities. Now, after more than 40 years apart, the original trio has reunited and are making music again. I wanted music so much, it scared me. - Terri Nunn For more information about Berlin and Terri Nunn head for the band's website https://www.berlinpage.com/ To contact me with feedback, comments or suggestions for other interviewees, go to my website https://abreathoffreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy this week's episode - a conversation with Terri Nunn from 80s band Berlin.

The song was co-written by group members John Crawford, Terri Nunn and David Diamond and sung as a duet by Crawford and Nunn.Released as the album's second single in February 1983, the single became a cult hit on American radio and brought the group into the mainstream. Despite the significant attention, the song's racy lyrics resulted in it being banned from several radio stations. Perhaps because of this, the single ultimately peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in late March and early April 1983. The song was also the first single release from the band's new label, Geffen Records.#Berlin #sex#Berlin #TakeMyBreathAway #VevoBerlin - Take My Breath Away (Official Video)Berlin's official music video for 'Take My Breath Away'. Terri Nunn is the lead singer of Berlin, which many remember from the height of MTV music video days as the sexy trio who brought us “The Metro,” “Sex,” and their runaway Top Gun soundtrack anthem “Take My Breath Away.” The track earned them an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.  Here we are 40 years and 8 albums later, and the band introduced their newest album titled “Strings Attached” featuring the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra re-visiting the band's most iconic tunes. In early 2021, host Thea Wood conducted this remote interview with Terri Nunn.  In This Episode Terri shares — The change in mindset that set her free to be happier and take more risks — Getting the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to sex it up a bit (tell us if you think it worked) — Recording a video in an active dungeon with a “big reveal” at the end — Discussing the sexual nature of her art with her kids — The most memorable words her mother shared before passing on from cancer — Her life-long fear of people and fear of “losing it all” Credits Guest: Terri Nunn of Berlin Host: Thea Wood Engineering/Production: Shea Carothers Photo credit: Marc Green Song: “Now It's My Turn” from album “Strings Attached” featuring the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite the fact that Berlin would be considered the standard for early 80's European new wave, the band actually originated in the Los Angeles area.  The band had no actual connections with Berlin, but chose the name to make them seem more European and exotic than their own Orange County.  Pleasure Victim is Berlin's second studio album and the one that was their breakout success. The group was formed after lead singer Terri Nunn put an advertisement in a musicians magazine that read, “Girl singer looking for a weird rock group.”  The other members of the band for this album were John Crawford (bass, synthesizer, vocals, and primary songwriter), David Diamond (synthesizer, guitar, vocals), Daniel Van Patten (percussion), Chris Ruiz-Velasco (guitar), and Ric Olsen (guitar).  Ron Learned plays drums on the opening track for the album.Berlin reveled in controversy, being banned on several radio stations for the lyrics from their second single, "Sex (I'm A...)" and reaping the benefits of the publicity that ensued.  Rumors about Nunn's underage appearance in Penthouse also boosted the bands notoriety (the rumors were eventually confirmed).Terri Nunn had a career as an actress before joining Berlin, and briefly left the group to continue acting.  She auditioned for the part as Princess Leia in "Star Wars" in 1976, losing out to Carrie Fisher for that role.Berlin was influenced by groups like Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane and David Bowie, and their synth-driven new wave sound is a time stamped icon of the early 80's.Pleasure VictimThe synth-driven title track was the first single released from the album.  The song is about a woman who has finally found the person she wants.  “You're the passion in me.  You've broken down the system.  You're the vision I see - a pleasure victim.”Sex (I'm A...)This song is the second single released, and the one that really propelled the group's success.  Although many radio stations banned the song, it was a staple of dance clubs everywhere.  The song describes a variety of sexual role-playing the woman undertakes.  Crawford and Nunn sing this as a duet.MasqueradeThis track is a deeper cut, but still gets some airplay on 80's oriented radio.  You really get a sense of Terri Nunn's vocal quality in this tune.  The song itself tells of the travails of the singers and bands trying to make it in the music industry. The MetroThe third single from the album was a big hit on both radio and MTV.  John Crawford wrote this song about a reverie on a Paris metro after a breakup.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Ain't Nobody's Business” by B.B. King (from the motion picture “The King of Comedy”)This movie was a satirical comedy, but was a flop.  However, it produced a great blues cover from King. STAFF PICKS:Dirty Laundry by Don HenleyBrian's staff pick features former Eagles drummer and vocalist Don Henley on his debut solo album after the Eagles had broken up (or as we would learn in the 90's, took a 14-year vacation).  It is a scathing indictment of the media.  “Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here.  I just have to look good, I  don't have to be clear.  Come and whisper in my ear.  We love dirty laundry.”Der Kommisar by After the FireRob brings us a cover of a song originally recorded by Falco in German.  After the Fire was started by Yes keyboardist Peter Banks, and evolved from a prog rock band to a new wave outfit.  The song lyrics have a spy theme, chronicling a couple trying to avoid the police.  The repeating German line translates to “Everything OK, Officer?” This single US hit became a hit after the band had disbanded. What About Me by Moving PicturesBruce's staff pick features a group popular in Australia which was essentially a one-hit wonder in the States.  Songwriter Garry Frost was inspired to write the song when he was working with autistic children in his day job, and watched a small boy not being noticed waiting at the lunch counter one day on his lunch break. Forever Now by The Psychedelic FursWayne's wraps up our staff picks with a fast paced and much deeper piece from a “second British Invasion” group.  It is about being in the moment and not wanting the time to end - "Let it stay forever now."  Todd Rundgren was producer and a guest musician on this album, and the "wall of sound" approach has Rundgren's imprint.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth by MetallicaA surprisingly early instrumental by the band that would come to define thrash metal in the years to come closes out this episode.  This is off Metallica's debut album.

New Wave band Berlin has gone through multiple incarnations during its four-decade tenure, seeing members – including lead singer Terri Nunn – come and go over the years. After Nunn rejoined the band in 1980, the underground success of Berlin's second single led to their debut EP, Pleasure Victim, which spawned the national hit “Sex (I'm A...)” in 1982, followed by “The Metro” the following year. The band's music would go on to be iconic, thanks to the massive success of the Giorgio Moroder written and produced song, “Take My Breath Away,” featured on the soundtrack to the 1986 action film, Top Gun. That song would go on to win both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and has come to the band's defining cut. The band would break up in 1987, and while Nunn would reform the band–sans any other original members–in the late '90s, it wasn't until an episode of VH1's Bands Reunited in 2004 that the group's founding players would get together. However, just last year, fellow founding members John Crawford (bass and synthesizer) and David Diamond (synthesizer and guitar) reunited with Nunn once again for the band's Transcendance album. Now, Berlin–with Crawford, Diamond, and Nunn–release Strings Attached, a re-imagining of many of the band's best-known songs with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. That album is out this Friday from August Day, and it was a real joy to hop on the phone with Nunn to discuss the band's catalog, the new album, and performing once again with Crawford and Diamond.

Episode 10 will be looking at the influential women of punk and new wave that revolutionized the way women were seen, heard, and represented in the music industry.  Women have made significant contributions to punk rock music and its subculture since its inception in the 1970s. In contrast to the rock music and heavy metal scenes of the 1970s, which were dominated by men, the anarchic, counter-cultural mindset of the punk scene in mid-and-late 1970s encouraged women to participate. This participation played a role in the historical development of punk music, especially in the US and UK at that time, and continues to influence and enable future generations. Women have participated in the punk scene as lead singers, instrumentalists, as all-female bands, zine contributors and fashion designers. Bands Include: Debby Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Exene Cervenka, Wendy O Williams, Annabelle Lwin, Souxsie Sioux, Dale Bozio, Terri Nunn, Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox, Belinda Carlisle, Poly Styrene, Ari Up, Joan Jett and Lita Ford

–One of her videos was banned in the early days of MTV–Terri Nunn fronted the Eighties synth band Berlin, who first rose to prominence with their controversial single “Sex (I’m a…)” in 1982. MTV refused to play that steamy bit of erotica, but did put other Berlin tracks like “The Metro,” and “No More Words” into heavy rotation. The band eventually hit pay dirt with “Take My Breath Away” from the Top Gun Soundtrack, which rocketed to number one in 1986. But, that stab at commercialism tore the band apart and Nunn went solo. Now, she is readying her first set of original material in nine years, which she hopes to release later this fall.
