Dr. Tom Frieden, Resolve to Save Lives (CDC Director 2009-2017,) details the dangerous implications of deep changes underway at CDC—on tobacco, environmental toxins, and communications. It is no less dangerous that CDC should only focus on infectious diseases and not be focused on global threats. What explains CDC's exceptional vulnerability to attacks and the deep skepticism towards CDC? What to make of the Administration for a Healthy America (AHA) advanced by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.? What of the Trump administration response to the measles outbreak in Texas, New Mexico, and beyond?

Two Supreme Court rulings will impact critical Trump Administration deportation cases. First, the court allowed the White House to continue using the Alien Enemies Act, which gives them sweeping wartime authority to rapidly deport alleged gang members. In a second case, the Court extended a deadline for returning Maryland father Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a Venezuelan prison back to the US.  Gregg Nunziata, a veteran of the conservative legal movement, joins the show to discuss the implications of these rulings.  Also on today's show: Jan Egeland, Secretary General, Norwegian Refugee Council; Dr. Tom Frieden, Former Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  Learn more about your ad choices. There once was a time when indoor smoking was allowed in workplaces all across the United States, when trans fats were ubiquitous, and when fast food restaurants didn't have to post calorie information on their menus. That wasn't so long ago, and it's in large part thanks to the pioneering efforts of Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, Health Commissioner of New York City from 2002 to 2009, that these changes were made. Dr. Frieden's city-wide initiatives during this time included steps to reduce tobacco use (by banning indoor smoking, increasing tobacco taxes, and aggressive anti-tobacco ads), to ban trans fats and mandate proper nutrition labeling in restaurants, and to rapidly expand screening for diabetes and HIV. All of these efforts have since been adopted nationwide and have gained practically universal acceptance by the public. Prior to this, Dr. Frieden spearheaded tuberculosis control measures in New York City and India, drastically slashing rates of multidrug resistant tuberculosis. He was also director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during which time he led the CDC's response against the H1N1 influenza pandemic, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and the Zika virus epidemic. Most recently, he leads Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative aiming to prevent cardiovascular disease primarily through advocacy of lifestyle interventions. Over the course of our conversation, Dr. Frieden shares his personal path to a career in infectious disease and public health, lessons learned from his work on tuberculosis control, striking the balance between curbing personal liberties and protecting community health, key insights into effective public health communication particularly when dealing with incomplete information or data, the evolution of the political and partisan nature of health policy, why preventing heart disease is so critical, and more.In this episode, you'll hear about: 3:00 - How a conversation with his father drew Dr. Frieden to a career in public health5:40 - Dr. Frieden's early work tackling tuberculous as a “management problem”9:05 - Balancing individual rights with the health of the public17:55 - The formula Dr. Frieden has used to choose which particular public health issues to focus on 28:08 - Strategies for effective health communication with the public33:08 - The mission of Dr. Frieden's organization Resolve to Save Lives39:16 - Dr. Frieden's thoughts on how to navigate public health communications in the light of changing scientific knowledge45:50 - The important lessons that Dr. Frieden learned from his patients about public health during his time as a clinician Dr. Tom Frieden is the President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives. Dr. Frieden can be found on Twitter/X at @DrTomFrieden. People and Work discussed in this episode: Dr. Karel Styblo Dr. Nancy Messenior's February 2020 COVID addressVisit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.Copyright The Doctor's Art Podcast 2024

Researchers are seeking to learn why bird flu kills some animals quickly but causes only moderate illness in others. In recent years, bird flu is believed to have killed millions of wild and domestic birds worldwide. Other animals such as seals, cats, dogs, and cows have also been infected. The virus is officially known as H5N1. It has largely stayed out of the human population. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that as of April 1, 2024, H5N1 had caused nearly 900 human infections and 463 deaths since 2003. Most of the human cases involved direct contact between people and infected birds. In cases of the virus spreading between humans, individuals involved were found to have had close and extended contact within households. The currently spreading version of bird flu was first identified in 1959. But the illness did not start to cause concern among health officials until a bird flu outbreak hit Hong Kong in 1997. That outbreak caused severe sickness and deaths in some humans. Scientists are still studying possible reasons the H5N1 virus has not heavily affected human populations. But some researchers fear the situation may change. Like other viruses, H5N1 has mutated over time. During the last few years, one particular bird flu version has been spreading quickly and widely. Dr. Tom Frieden is a former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He told The Associated Press about the ongoing outbreaks, “There's a lot we don't understand.”Tom Frieden博士是美国疾病控制与预防中心(CDC)的前任主任。 Frieden also heads the non-profit group Resolve to Save Lives. He added, “I think we have to get over the 'hope for the best and bury our head in the sand' approach."Frieden还领导着非营利组织“决心拯救生命”。他补充说:“我认为我们必须克服‘希望最好并掩耳盗铃'的做法。”Some researchers have theorized flu viruses that started in birds caused severe human pandemics. For example, pandemics that took place in 1918 and 1957 quickly spread among animals and people.一些研究人员提出了理论,认为始于鸟类的流感病毒导致了严重的人类大流行。例如,1918年和1957年发生的大流行迅速在人类和动物之间传播。Many experts think it would be unlikely the currently spreading virus will become a deadly, worldwide pandemic.许多专家认为,目前传播的病毒不太可能成为致命的全球大流行。But to prepare for that possibility, U.S. health officials are developing vaccines that might be needed. At this time, they are not planning other measures. This is because the virus is not causing severe disease in humans and there is no strong evidence it is spreading from person to person.但为了应对这种可能性,美国卫生官员正在开发可能需要的疫苗。目前,他们没有计划采取其他措施。这是因为该病毒未在人类中引起严重疾病,并且没有强有力的证据表明它在人与人之间传播。The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said U.S. animal outbreaks have been reported at numerous dairy cow farms and among more than 1,000 groups of poultry. At least four human infections have been reported among hundreds of thousands of people working at U.S. poultry and dairy farms.美国农业部表示,美国的动物疫情已在众多奶牛场和1000多个家禽群体中报告。至少有四例人类感染报告涉及数十万在美国家禽和奶牛场工作的人员。Worldwide, doctors have so far identified 15 human infections caused by the current version. That count includes one death, a 38-year-old woman in southern China in 2022. But officials said most of the identified people had either no signs of disease or only mild ones.全球范围内,医生迄今已确认由当前版本引起的15例人类感染。这些病例中包括一例死亡病例,即2022年中国南方的一名38岁女性。但官员们表示,绝大多数被确认的感染者要么没有疾病迹象,要么只有轻微症状。Some experts have wondered whether humans have built up some level of immunity after being infected by other virus forms or because of vaccination. But a study involving human blood samples suggested there was little to no existing immunity to this version of the bird flu virus.一些专家怀疑人类是否在被其他病毒形式感染或因接种疫苗后建立了一定程度的免疫力。但一项涉及人类血液样本的研究表明,对这种禽流感病毒版本几乎没有现有的免疫力。

It's been 20 years since former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg effectively banned smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces. At the time, the Smoke-Free Air Act was met with plenty of opposition, with critics saying it would destroy the restaurant and bar industry, hurt tourism and create a dip in tax revenue. Two decades later, the measure has proven to be an overwhelming success, with many other municipalities, both in America and abroad, following in the city's footsteps.    Dr. Tom Frieden was Bloomberg's health commissioner in 2003, and was an integral part of making the law a reality. He joined Errol Louis to look back at how the Smoke-Free Air Act came to pass, while discussing the many struggles that remain in the war against smoking, including the current statewide proposal to ban menthol cigarettes. Resolve to Save Lives was created in 2017, and works with organizations around the world to prevent epidemics and reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease.

One World, One Health

Disease outbreaks are inevitable. Germs are part of our world, and there's no way to completely eradicate them. But epidemics and pandemics are preventable. Vaccines, better treatments, hygiene, improvements in ventilation, and teaching people how diseases spread can all give individuals and communities the tools they need to contain disease outbreaks before they turn into epidemics and pandemics. Trust in public health and in the governments that administer public health measures is key to making them work.In this episode, Dr. Tom Frieden talks to host Maggie Fox about epidemics that were prevented and how they were stopped. Dr. Frieden is the President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives and a former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Carl Bernstein, journalist, author and CNN Political Analyst, joins AC360 to react to the President’s comments and says “we’re witnessing a homicidal president.” Plus, a top spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services claimed, without evidence, the Center for Disease Control has a “resistance unit” to work against Trump.
