The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N takes everything you'd expect from a battery-electric vehicle and throws it for a loop. Hyundai's performance-oriented BEV gives you battery-electric bonafides like 601 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque but throws the brand's N image into the mix. That translates to fake shift points, hilarious engine noise, and a package that is still useful despite the hilarity. This combination of performance and cartoonish enthusiasm makes the Ioniq 5 N one of the most exciting battery-powered vehicles on the road today. Eschewing battery power, but also stuck with high-strung downsizing, the Toyota GR Corolla takes the tried-and-true enthusiast car path and features gobs of power for not a lot of mass. This GR Corolla packs a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine under the hood that throws 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission and into a standard all-wheel-drive system. Like the Ioniq 5 N, the Corolla shape and the potent powertrain have turned the GR Corolla into an instant enthusiast darling.   On this episode of Talking Car with the Boss, Natalie Neff and Wesley Wren discuss their respective times in these machines. The two talk about the Ioniq 5 N's effect on battery-electric cars, the hilarious simulated features, and what makes it so interesting for non-EV shoppers. They also talk about what makes the GR Corolla so special in today's marketplace. Closing the show, the pair both pick which machine they'd add to their collections.

America on the Road's Co-Host Chris Teague finally went and did it — he bought himself a brand-new 2024 Toyota GR Corolla. Not only that, but he took delivery of his hot, new ride right in the midst of a miserable Maine winter. Now the question is, does the 300-horsepower, all-wheel-drive car live up to his high expectations for it? And how is it standing up to the difficult weather conditions January in Maine is throwing at it? We'll have the answers to those questions and more in this episode. While Teague was putting his new ride through its paces, Host Jack Nerad had the opportunity to wring out the 2024 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Meridian Edition. The Meridian Edition is the most off-road-oriented of the CX-5- crossover models. It offers a blown engine that belts out in excess of 250 horsepower, and it's equipped with a very trick all-wheel-drive system. Mazda is well-known for its excellent on-road suspensions and top-notch handling. But what kind of capabilities does the CX-50 have off the pavement? We'll offer our opinions. Beyond the road tests, there is plenty of fascinating automotive news this week. According to an exclusive report from Reuters, Tesla is planning an all-new $25,000 car to be introduced in the middle of next year. The Texas-based carmaker is lining up suppliers for what promises to be its lowest-priced offering ever. We'll have details on that startling development and our thoughts as well. In other news this week, that electric vehicle thing isn't going as well at Ford Motor Company. Its conventionally powered SUVs and trucks are selling so well that the carmaker is bringing in a third crew to meet the demand for the Bronco and Ranger. But at the same time, it is cutting production of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck in light of slower-than-expected sales. And finally, an auto executive has the guts to say what so many are thinking these days. Despite all the hype and buzz around the inevitability of electrification, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda predicts EVs will only reach 30% market share and level off there. We'll have more of his comments and our reaction coming up. We also have additional thoughts from Toyota for you this week. Our special guest is Cody Wilhide, Toyota truck marketing manager and an expert on the all-new Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup. We'll chat with him about the details of that very popular truck a little later in the show. All that and more are coming up on America on the Road. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the coolest and weirdest cars to ever leave a Toyota factory. The combination of an altered Yaris shell, a high-strung turbocharged three-cylinder, and an all-wheel drive system made hot hatch fans in the U.S. jealous. Well, Toyota finally answered the calls of bringing over a rally-inspired hatchback to the U.S., but in the larger Corolla shell. Still sporting a highly strung 1.6-liter I3 under its hood, the GR Corolla helps give North American Toyota fans a rally-inspired option. That 1.6-liter sends 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission and into an all-wheel drive system. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Jan. 6 at 6 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Treasury has announced that the nation's gross national debt has surpassed $34 trillion. The record high comes after Republican lawmakers and the White House agreed to temporarily lift the nation's $31.4 trillion debt limit last year after the government ran up against its legal borrowing capacity and needed to implement “extraordinary measures” to avoid a default. That agreement lasts until January 2025. Congress is gearing up for another funding fight. Most of us struggle with making those New Year's resolutions stick. This year, add some fuel — or even electricity — to your personal improvement fire with cars that can help you see your goals through to the end. Whether you want to get fit or get out, Edmunds picks five vehicles to keep you motivated. On our list are the Toyota GR Corolla, Ford Bronco, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Mercedes-Benz GLB. Four years after the last census, almost a dozen small communities in the Midwest are going to be counted again in hopes of getting more state funding. Eleven municipalities in Illinois and Iowa are the only cities in the U.S. so far to have signed agreements with the U.S. Census Bureau to recount their residents in 2024 and 2025 in a repeat of what happened during the 2020 census. The first year in which the special censuses can be conducted is 2024. The cities' populations have grown so fast in three years that they are leaving state funding on the table by not including the extra growth. Investment guru Warren Buffett topped The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the biggest charitable donations in 2023, with his $541.5 million gift to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named for his first wife, who died in 2004. The 2023 list of gifts from individuals or their foundations totaled more than $3.5 billion. Four universities received big gifts, along with four scientific research institutes and a health-care system. The other gifts went to a family foundation and a racial justice group. The list has 11 gifts because of ties. Eight of the donors are multibillionaires, and their combined net worth is $305.1 billion. NEW YORK (AP) — New York City has banned vendors from the Brooklyn Bridge. The change ends a bustling market that supplied cheap goods to tourists on the iconic crossing. Police officers were stationed in pairs Wednesday along the mile-long span. The ban is aimed at easing congestion on the bridge's heavily trafficked pedestrian walkway. Sellers acknowledge the bridge has recently been inundated with tabletop businesses selling such items as New York-branded hats and keychains, but the vendors say the city's total ban went too far. Mayor Eric Adams is defending the prohibition as necessary to ensure pedestrian safety and clamp down on what he described as growing disorder. NEW YORK (AP) — A new version of the federal student aid application known as the FAFSA is available for the 2024-2025 school year, but only on a limited basis as the U.S. Department of Education works on a redesign meant to make it easier to apply. That means that the application students can usually fill out starting in October isn't yet available to everyone. The redesign brings major changes such as fewer questions, the ability to list more colleges and availability in more languages. However, students will get their financial aid offers later than usual because the form hasn't been available. A soft launch period opened last week. NEW YORK (AP) — More U.S. hospitals are requiring masks and limiting visitors as health officials face a post-holiday spike in flu and other illnesses. New York City last week instituted a mask mandate for the city's 11 public hospitals. Similar measures were ordered at some hospitals in Los Angeles and Massachusetts. Flu and COVID-19 infections have been increasing for weeks, with high levels of flu-like illness reported in 31 states just before Christmas. Updated national numbers are to be released Friday, but health officials predict infections will grow in many states well into January. Crib cameras are offering a clue to a rare but devastating tragedy — when seemingly healthy young children suddenly die in their sleep and autopsies can't tell why. Similar to SIDS in babies, it's called sudden unexplained death in childhood, or SUDC, when it happens after age 1. In a small study, researchers analyzed video that captured the deaths of seven toddlers and found seizures sometimes play a role. Now they must figure out why. Researchers from NYU Langone Health reported the findings Thursday in the journal Neurology. A Connecticut woman who pushed for expanded access to Vermont's law that allows people who are terminally ill to end their lives has died in Vermont. Lynda Bluestein, who had terminal cancer, ended her life by taking prescribed lethal medication on Thursday. Her husband says her last words were that she was so happy that she didn't have to suffer anymore. The group Compassion & Choices filed a lawsuit against Vermont in 2022 on behalf of Bluestein. She claimed Vermont's residency requirement in its medically assisted suicide law violated the U.S. Constitution. The state settled the case last year, allowing Bluestein and later anyone else in her circumstances to take advantage of the law. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The falling-block video game Tetris has met its match in 13-year-old Willis Gibson. In late December, he became the first player to officially beat the original Nintendo version of the game — by breaking it. Technically, Willis — aka “blue scuti” in the gaming world — made it to what gamers call a “kill screen,” a point where the Tetris code glitches, crashing the game. That might not sound like much of a victory to most people, but it's a highly coveted achievement in the world of video games. And it's a very big deal for Tetris, which has long been described as an “unbeatable” game. NEW YORK (AP) — A small, rare herding dog called the Lancashire heeler is the latest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The organization announced Wednesday that the breed is now eligible for thousands of U.S. dog shows. Lancashire heelers historically were farm helpers that could both drive cattle and rout rats. The dogs are short-legged, long-bodied and active, and owners say contented heelers sometimes pull back their lips in a move that resembles a human smile. The Lancashire heeler is the 201st breed recognized by the AKC. Heelers' history goes back centuries in the United Kingdom, where they're now deemed a “vulnerable native breed” at risk of dying out in their homeland. HANAPEPE, Hawaii (AP) — A salt patch on the island of Kauai is one of the last remaining in all of Hawaii. Salt makers from 22 Native Hawaiian families gather here in the summer months to do the hard work of making paakai or Hawaiian salt. An important part of this cultural and spiritual practice is to give away the salt. It can never be sold. The existence of this salt patch is being threatened by climate change, rising sea levels and pollution. These challenges have shrunk the salt-making season and reduced the quantity of salt produced. But the salt makers are looking for solutions to preserve this unique practice and pass on their knowledge to future generations. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. Editor's Note: This is the repeat of one of our most popular episodes in 2023. It originally aired on Saturday, November 25, 2023. Jack and Chris will be back with an all-new episode on January 6, 2024. Happy New Year to you! In this era of crossover vehicles and electric-powered appliance cars, fewer and fewer models on the road get an enthusiast's blood boiling. But one vehicle that does just that is the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla Morizo edition. First off, it serves up 300 horsepower from its highly sophisticated turbocharged three-cylinder engine. In a vehicle the size and weight of a Corolla, that is a heady way to begin. But that's just the start of what the Morizo edition provides. As Host Jack Nerad discovered during his week test driving the GR Corolla, the Morizo Edition's close gear ratio transmission, shorter differential gears, forged wheels, stiffened chassis, front brake ducts, mono-tube shock absorbers, and Ultrasuede seats make a great car even greater. While turning the GR Corolla into a two-seater takes the edge off versatility, it does show Gazoo Racing is serious about lightweighting the car. Torque is a stout 295 pound-feet, giving the Morizo Edition gratifying acceleration. In this episode of America on the Road, Nerad will give more detail on the GR Corolla and describe his experiences in the car. Happily, its straightline acceleration is matched by its ability to corner, an ability that has been enhanced by a stiffer body, upgraded suspension, and stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague gets in the driver's seat of the 2024 Toyota Prius. While it is hardly the equal of the GR Corolla, it is now a fun-to-drive small car in its own right. With nearly 200 horsepower on tap and the added benefits of electric-motor torque, the current Prius is the most fun-to-drive version ever. If that sounds like the automotive version of the world's tallest midget, you'll just have to listen to Teague's report to hear how good the new generation Prius really is. Topping the news segment this week, the Los Angeles Auto Show is finishing its run, and we will bring you the most important news from that international show. Hyundai, Honda, Kia, and Lucid showed very interesting vehicles in Los Angeles, and we'll give you details. Hyundai unmasked an all-new Santa Fe SUV and announced that it would begin selling cars through Amazon next year. Honda previewed an old performance coupe favorite, and Kia displayed a couple of battery-electric concept cars. Meanwhile, Lucid Motors might have stolen the show with its impressive three-row Gravity SUV. And there is drama at General Motors as the two top executives of the company's Cruise self-driving effort exit the company in the wake of safety issues that are dogging it. We'll have details and commentary on that Byzantine tale in this show. Our very special guest this week is Steve Center, Chief Operating Officer of Kia America. We had the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss the many challenges and opportunities the brand faces as the market landscape shifts. Center is one of the smartest guys in the car industry, and we're certain you'll enjoy what he has to say. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

“Performance Corolla” is an oxymoron up there with “jumbo shrimp”, but the GR Corolla is not part of the Marvel alternative multiverse. It's real, and loads of fun. Starting at just $36,995 with shipping from the specialized factory in Japan, the GR is a performance bargain. 300 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and structural improvements all help to make it the most potent Corolla to date. And the Gazoo Racing visuals get attention… not always welcome. Tom Voelk checks out a Circuit edition that MSRPs at around $44K.

Sons of Speed Publisher Paul Herrold sits in for Jill this week. Paul and Tom opened the show talking about the discontinued Fiat 500X and related Jeep Renegade small crossovers. Tom asked Paul if he thought Jeep's recent sales decline came—at least in part—as a result of the brand's small, too-conventional crossovers, such as the Renegade, Compass, and Cherokee. Paul talked about four new Sons of Speed videos available for viewing at WeAreMotorDrive.com. The videos feature lap time at Road America race track, and include the Toyota GR Corolla, Volkswagen GTI, BMW M2, and Toyota Supra. Following up on Jill's EV charging issues from a week earlier, Tom shared a tale of similar frustration, including broken Evgo charging units—which were listed as operational on the provider's app—and Electrify America's over-hyped “Super Fast” charging. In the second segment Paul and Tom welcome Ram Communications Manager Trevor Dorchies to the show. Trevor updated the hosts on product in the Ram pipeline, including the redesigned 1500 pickup, the RAM REV electric pickup, and the extended-range plug-in-hybrid Ram Ramcharger. Also discussed is the new, ultra-luxury Ram 1500 Tungsten. In the last segment Paul is subjected to Tom's “Best Mileage” quiz, which includes a surprising Burger King bonus question. The hosts wrapped up the show by discussing why Tom's test vehicle, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, makes Tom want to shoot a water buffalo.

He'll tell us why he settled on the Golf R and how it's been working out for him so far. In our other road test this week, Host Jack Nerad is going big and going home. His road test vehicle is the Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup. Available with two terrific engines, including a Cummins turbodiesel with immense amounts of torque, the Ram 2500 is the perfect upscale toy hauler. It's not cheap, but it's fitted out like a luxury SUV. Among its many niceties is one of the best infotainment systems on the planet. Jack will tell you all about his time at home with it in his detailed report. It's Monterey Car Week, and we'll give you a report on some of the important news coming from that event. BMW is showing a very interesting vehicle that could have big ramifications aboutits future. Then Sami jumps into the exotic world of Lamborghini. However this isn't just any Lambo he drove, but the 2024 Huracan Sterrato, an off-road oriented version of the supercar that's never been done before. We are back! It's been a minute. This is episode 201, the crazy drunken 200th episode will come soon, so this is episode 201. First bit of news is the Mk5 Toyota Supra is now coming with a third pedal, which is awesome news; three pedal all the things! We then talk about the 400Z which we all now like unanimously, and the Toyota GR Corolla. Then we talk about how Subaru is completely in the toilet, and car crashes we've seen lately. We take a quick break, to ensure the existence of this episode, and come back talking about the Aston Martin Valkyrie, and do some shout outs. We then talk about some of what we've done to our cars since we've been off air. And we end talking about nonsense, some things haven't changed.
