Gender is, of course, one of the most contentious ethical and political topics you can find at the moment. There are numerous practical and policy debates - for example those relating to medicine, prisons and sport - which can seem completely intractable, and which provoke the strongest possible opinions on all sides.Sitting behind these practical questions, however, is a cluster of theoretical questions, which can be summarised as questions about what gender actually is. Graham Bex-Priestley, a Lecturer at the IDEA Centre, has a novel approach to these questions. He suggests that we should think of someone's gender as being something like their name. In this interview, he explains why.Graham's article on this topic is here:Bex-Priestley, Graham. “Gender as Name.” Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 23, no. 2 (November 2022): 189–213.And here are some articles defending the other views mentioned in the conversation:Biological view: Byrne, Alex. “Are Women Adult Human Females?” Philosophical Studies 177, no. 12 (December 2020): 3783–803.Family resemblance view: Heyes, Cressida. Line Drawings: Defining Women through Feminist Practice. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2000.Social position via perceived reproductive role view: Haslanger, Sally. Resisting Reality: Social Construction and Social Critique. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012.Social constraints and enablements view: Ásta. Categories We Live By: The Construction of Sex, Gender, Race, and Other Social Categories. New York: Oxford University Press, 2018.Critical gender view: Dembroff, Robin. “Beyond Binary: Genderqueer as Critical Gender Kind.” Philosophers' Imprint 20, no. 9 (April 2020): 1–31. Note the “critical gender” view is about rejecting and destabilising dominant gender ideology and is not to be confused with the “gender critical” movement, which accepts the biological view.Existential self-identity view: Bettcher, Talia Mae. “Trans Identities and First-Person Authority.” In You've Changed: Sex Reassignment and Personal Identity, edited by Laurie Shrage, 98–120. What Gender Should Be. London: Bloomsbury, 2024.Performative view: Judith Butler's early books (Gender Trouble, Bodies That Matter) are the classics, but they can be difficult. In contrast, Butler's latest book is written for a public audience: Butler, Judith. Who's Afraid of Gender? Allen Lane, 2024 (many of the topics in this book are discussed in their Cambridge public lecture of the same title).Ethics Untangled is produced by the IDEA Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds.Twitter: @EthicsUntangledFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ideacetlLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/idea-ethics-centre/
In this edition of the show, Elle talks about the idea of the 24/7 news cycle, and how it creates predictable waves of outrage throughout our culture, and into our lives. She reflects on the common denominators of the cycle as described by author Mark Manson (from the Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck) in a block post, and explores how these dynamics are uniquely experienced by trans and gender expansive people. Elle talks about her experiences of feeling pressure to "have a take" when the news cycle hits, and anxiety about how that take or lack of a take may be received. Some of the resources discussed in the show include: Better, Faster, Farther, by Maggie Mertens The work of Erin in the Morning Church Redwood Trees Scandal As always, to learn more about Elle and her work, or to explore the possibility of accessing psychotherapy from her, please visit her website at www.estherloewen.com. Send us a Text Message. In this lively and unfiltered episode of "Not Well," hosts Bobby and Jim dive into a myriad of topics, blending humor, personal anecdotes, and candid discussions on controversial issues. The episode kicks off with the hosts bantering about their recent experiences, including unexpected and awkward encounters with strangers. They recount a night out where Bobby found himself in an alley with a surprise penis in front of him, leading to a hilarious recounting of their adventures. The conversation then shifts to Bobby's attempts at playing a game of seduction, which he humorously admits is not going well. Jim teases Bobby about his direct approach to flirting and seduction, contrasting it with his own more coy and strategic methods. They discuss the concept of seduction techniques, drawing from the book "The Game," and how these tactics apply (or don't apply) in the gay community.Bobby shares his thoughts on the privilege and entitlement of celebrity children, particularly targeting Northwest and her Broadway debut, which he humorously compares to a "Make a Wish" performance. The hosts also delve into their own childhood memories, touching on moments that may have hinted at their sexual orientation from a young age.A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to a discussion on neurodivergence, with Bobby and Jim reflecting on their own experiences and traits that might suggest they are on the autism spectrum. This leads to a broader conversation about how they navigate social interactions and sensory overloads in crowded or noisy environments. The episode takes a serious yet comedic turn as the hosts express their frustration with societal expectations and the constant need to censor themselves to avoid offending others. Bobby passionately declares that he will no longer hold back and will speak his mind, regardless of potential backlash. The hosts wrap up the episode by encouraging listeners to call in and share their most unfiltered thoughts and opinions, promising to protect their anonymity. They emphasize the importance of authenticity and honesty in their interactions, both on the podcast and in their personal lives.Support the Show.As always you can write us at nowellpodcast@gmail.com or call us at (614) 721-5336 and tell us your Not Wells of the week InstagramTwitterBobby's Only FansHelp us continue to grow and create amazing content, like a live tour or just help fund some new headphones when needed. We live in an age where we are told to define and live our own truth, including the most fundamental truths about our human identity. Over against such self-determination, Scripture gives us a vision for life based on the identity of God as the transcendent Creator, of human beings as image-bearing creatures, and the fundamental givenness of the world.

Right now, trans rights are a minefield, and people just want to be able to live in a body they feel comfortable in without being persecuted. Some believe trans and gender non-conforming identities are a new fad, but history proves otherwise! In this episode, Charlotte talks about 7 people throughout history who prove that trans and non-binary identities have always existed, since the beginning of time. --- Where to Find Us: Head to our website, learnaboutpod.com, to read the full episode notes and see a list of links and resources used to research this episode. When our guest Phil Illy found out he had a sexual orientation that he'd never heard of, he set out to understand it. Following an extensive review of nearly a century of research from clinical sexology, Phil describes and demystifies autoheterosexuality, and how this much misunderstood sexual orientation can set someone on a path to becoming transgender. He helps spouses and partners of trans people learn how the course of autoheterosexuality progresses, how to better understand the ones they love, how to contextualize what is happening during transition, and have the best information to make decisions for their lives. For this episode I spoke to Professor Fiona Woollard. Professor Woollard is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton. She has research interests in normative ethics, applied ethics, epistemically transformative experiences and the philosophy of sex and pregnancy. She has published on topics including the distinction between doing and allowing harm, climate change and the non-identity problem, the moral significance of numbers, pornography and the norm of monogamy. Her recent research has led her to ask a question which turns out to be surprisingly difficult to answer: what is a mother? Not necessarily, in her view, a woman with a child. In this interview she explains why she doesn't think this is the right way of defining a mother, and what she thinks is a better way. To get there, we tried to get to grips with some vexed questions about gender.Professor Woollard's page at Southampton is here. Here's the advert we refer to at the start of the interview. Some of the books and papers Professor Woollard talks about in the interview:Ashley, Florence. Writing a book on transgender idendities as a non-trans person is a bit bold, some might say audacious. This is why I decided to open myself up to my friend Seda, who is a transwoman. Seda read my book Embodied and appreciated a lot of things in it, but she does have some disagreements, which we discuss in this podcast. Seda has become a friend over the last year and has been an incredible dialogue partner. –––––– PROMOS Save 10% on courses with Kairos Classroom using code TITR at kairosclassroom.com! –––––– Sign up with Faithful Counseling today to save 10% off of your first month at the link: faithfulcounseling.com/theology –––––– Save 30% at SeminaryNow.com by using code TITR –––––– Support Preston Support Preston by going to patreon.com Venmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1 Connect with Preston Twitter | @PrestonSprinkle Instagram | @preston.sprinkle Youtube | Preston Sprinkle Check out Dr. Sprinkle's website prestonsprinkle.com Stay Up to Date with the Podcast Twitter | @RawTheology Instagram | @TheologyintheRaw If you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review. www.theologyintheraw.com

In this episode I'm joined by Annika, a woman who formerly identified as trans who also married a trans-identified man. We walk through her initial discovery of the trans experience and how her support of a trans identified friend left her asking new questions about her gender and sexuality. She discusses her confusing introduction to goddess culture, in which women-only language and spaces were challenged by trans-identified men in the group, and about the influence her trans identified housemates had on her self-perception. Annika details her marriage to a trans-identified man who exhibited Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder), the monumental abuse she endured while isolated with him, and the extreme internal resources she developed to survive even as one of her husband's alters set plans in motion to have her killed. We cover her harrowing journey to piece herself back together after being gaslit by both mental health professionals and her husband, and her intuitive work in illuminating the trans experience as a maladaptive mechanism of internal parts work. In today’s episode, Jonathan shares his story as a teenager working with a gender therapist who dismissed his preferences for treatment in favor of uncovering his “reasons” for being trans. We also speak with Beck Gee-Cohen about best practices in working with trans kids and how many modalities of psychotherapy exclude trans narratives. Thank you for listening. Trans, non-binary, genderqueer, and agender college students deserve respect and welcome at Indiana University's career fairs. But if you're a trans job or internship seeker, how do you decide what name to use on your resume? Can you include your pronouns on your clothes or on your application documents? What if it's important to be recognized as who you are -- but it's important to have the opportunity to build experience, too? Maria talks through early ideas to consider as you decide whether or how to disclose your gender identity at a career fair.
P.H. Dee and Jess Marshall, two former educators, are here to school the children. One's a queen, the other's a fan, and both want to shed light on the drag scene in the flyover states. On the syllabus today, we welcome a non-performing visiting lecturer to help us school the children on the convergences and divergences between trans identities and drag artists, and give some advice to those struggling in lockdown.Further information and donation options:www.gendernexus.orgwww.damien.orgRoyalty Free Music from Bensound

So this one took some unexpected twists! From a conversation about Materialism in the most capitalistic sense, and breaking down our value systems we somehow stumbled into a discussion on Trans-Identities! Should it be acceptable to identify as another race? Rachel Dolezal also became the centre of our discussion as we attempted to discuss the difference between her experience, and that of trans/gender-fluid individuals. Any thoughts? Let us know!!
