In late 2016, Daniel Troia was struggling with grief. Grief over the loss of his parents and grief over the division he saw unfolding on his TV, night after night. It made him angry, and that made him want to do something to change things, or at least to change his perception of things. So, in 2018, he set out on a cross-country bike ride. His plan was to ride from California to New York—with no food or money. He thought that if he was forced to rely on the kindness of strangers, he would also have an opportunity to connect with the communities he was passing through. In some ways, it went exactly as he'd planned and hoped (people were often kind, generous, and curious about his journey). In other ways, it was a completely different experience than he'd expected (as his appearance changed, so did people's reaction to him). He wound up stretching the trip beyond his original three-month plan: By the time he'd arrived in New York, he hadn't found exactly what he was searching for so he decided to cycle back to California. Seven months later, he returned home—and a year later, he released a documentary about his experience, We Are All in This Together. Read the transcript of the episode. I've always been fascinated with the idea of human endurance. What are we actually capable of doing? It's almost always a lot more than we think. At some point, I want to do a long distance bike ride. So far, the longest I've biked in a day is about 50 or 60 miles. And that was right here in this area, so afterward I went home and slept in my own bed. But I'd really like to bike from here in the Tampa Bay area, across to the other side of Florida, the east coast. It would probably take me like 3 days. I love the idea of that kind of adventure. But my guest today, Daniel, had a much bigger idea. His plan was to ride his bike across the entire US - from San Francisco all the way to New York City. And – he started this ride without carrying any money or any food. He was going to depend on the kindness of strangers all along the way. And that's exactly what he did. But that's not all – he recorded video all along the way. And he turned that into a documentary that's won a ton of awards. So we get to see him struggling to bike up mountains, and across long stretches where he saw no one, and through some scary neighborhoods. But my favorite part, and what made Daniel's journey so magical, are the people he encountered along the way. Host Diana Korte speaks with US Senator Tim Kaine from VA and former Democratic vice-presidential candidate. He is the author of a new memoir-- Walk, Ride, Paddle that describes a bit of history along with adventures and misadventures on the road including too many bear encounters. In 2019, he commemorated both his sixtieth birthday and his twenty-fifth year in public office by exploring Virginia's trails, bike tracks, and waterways. During weekends and in Senate recess weeks, Kaine—over a period of several years—hiked the 559 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Biked 321 miles along the Virginia Blue Ridge and canoed 348 miles on the James River. He's been a Virginia mayor, governor, and US senator and now a bonafide outdoorsy politician. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

Meet Jeff Hashimoto and Langdon Ernest-Beck. This duo climbed the 100 tallest peaks in Washington State and accomplished the feat by riding bicycles for the entire journey. This human powered adventure took 107 days to complete.
In April, journalist and author Clive Thompson set out to bicycle across the entire country — 4,150 miles total — as part of the reporting for his next book on “micromobility.” He documented his trip in real time online: 70 days on the road, broken up by a brief return trip home. Here we discuss what micromobility is and why this ride was so important for him to do, plus some ups and downs of the journey and what cycling across the country does to someone physically, mentally and emotionally. I'm excited to introduce you to our guest today, Jeffrey Tanenhaus. Jeffrey has had an incredible journey that started with giving tours on double-decker busses in NYC, working in a busy event planning company, and eventually deciding to leave it all behind and tour the US on a Citibike with nothing but his bike and a few extra items. On his journey, he made a pit stop in Tulsa, and he's here today to share why this city stood out to him among all the cities he passed through. So, sit back, relax, and let's get to know Jeffrey and his exciting story.ABOUT JEFFREY:After biking from NYC to LA on a rental Citi Bike, Jeffrey Tanenhaus moved to a city that seemed furthest behind on the development curve. When the Tulsa transplant lost his full-time job in the pandemic, Jeffrey pivoted to building a tour company that's now #1 on Tripadvisor. He also opened a tour office filled with vintage Tulsa travel memorabilia in the heart of the Deco District where he sells his travel memoir, West of Wheeling: How I Quit My Job, Broke the Law & Biked to a Better Life.BROUGHT TO YOU BY: THE ROOT COWORKINGHead on over to their website TheRootCoworking.com and schedule a tour, make sure you mention This is Tulsa podcast on your tour for 50% off your first month.Support the showMERCHwww.thisistulsapodcast.com/store/ LEAVE A REVIEWwww.thisistulsapodcast.com/reviews/new/ SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST NEWSLETTERhttps://bit.ly/3BLRCuG #thisistulsa #tulsa #tulsaok #tulsapodcast #tulsabusiness #keepitlocal #travelok #tulsatalks #918 #keeptulsacreative #tulsalove #podcast

She learned about triathlon and signed up for her first race a few weeks later. Seely was a member of the Arizona State University collegiate club triathlon team and a nationally ranked triathlete before her diagnosis. In 2010, Seely was diagnosed with Chiari II Malformation, basilar invagination, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which affect her brain, spine, and connective tissues. After her first surgery, she was back to competing seven weeks later at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships with ASU. She made her debut as an elite paratriathlete in 2012, earning bronze at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships that year. Then in 2013, Seely had her left leg amputated below the knee due to complications and increased spasticity in her foot. That would move her into a new paratriathlon category — but she continued to thrive, winning five gold medals on the elite ITU circuit in 2014. She earned her first two world championship titles in 2015 and 2016. At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Seely made history by winning a gold medal in paratriathlon's debut as a Paralympic medal event. She also competed in track & field at the Rio Games, placing sixth in the 200m. That same year, she was a featured athlete in ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue. Seely has been dominant in the women's PTS2 division since Rio, earning silver at the 2017 World Championships and winning her third career world title in 2018 after an undefeated 2018 elite season. In July of 2019, Seely won an ESPY for Best Female Athlete with a Disability. She faced significant health challenges in late 2020 and early 2021, spending several months in the hospital with endocarditis, severe inflammation of the heart. She returned to full-time training in the spring, regaining her fitness in time to earn a silver medal at the Americas Triathlon Para Championships June 27 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, a key selection event for the Tokyo Games. She says her biggest inspiration in life is her grandma for pushing her to be a better athlete and human and to make the world around her better. She also credits her service dog Mowgli as being a great training and life partner. When she travels for competitions, Seely collects postcards and mini silver spoons from each location. Her favorite spoon is a hand-painted ceramic spoon from Estonia, and some of her favorite places that she has traveled to are Northern Ireland and Poland. She says her name is spelled “Allysa” because of a misspelling on her birth certificate, and of her biggest talents outside of triathlon is creating DIY projects. In this episode, I sit down with author, public speaker, philanthropist, and endurance athlete, David Richman, whose mission is to form more meaningful human connections through storytelling. His first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. I sat down with the team that biked 512ks in 29 hours to raise money for the Nakekela AIDS clinic in South Africa. We talked about how we all got involved, how we trained, fundraising, a little bit about the actual clinic, and the highs and lows of the 30 hours we biked. This was a ton of run to record and I loved talking through the experience with the guys. I was joined by: Jesse Bout @boutjesse Warren Van Sydenborgh John-Michael Bout @aboutjem Arron Post @tallpostcraftcider Scott Dekorte @scott_dekorte Angela Jongsma Rachelle Vanluik @shellluik Josh Bout @joshuabout8 and Thomas Wikkerink weren't able to join us. When it comes to living the life he loves, this 7-time author walks the talk. He has built a multi-million dollar company, pedaled a bike 4,000 miles across the U.S. (twice), run a 100-mile race, and created adventures in close to 50 countries including having walked across seven countries - Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, Italy, France and Japan (750 miles). If you're in the market for a new mountain bike, one of the first things you need to figure out is how much bike you nee... Want. Are you the type who sees no downsides to pedalling a relatively long-travel, heavier machine around all day, even if it's "too much bike" for the terrain? Or are you the opposite, preferring a relatively light-duty machine that might be more exciting to ride, even if you're going slower down the sketchy stuff? It's the old under-biked versus over-biked argument for episode six, with Kazimer and Levy looking at the situation from completely different angles. Of course.
Isabella de la Houssaye is our guest on Discover Lafayette with host, Jan Swift. Isabella is a native of Crowley and has worked and traveled all over the world, first as an international finance lawyer at White & Case LLP, then as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers, and currently as the co-owner of Material Culture, in Philadelphia, a retail establishment and auction house. Isabella is also an endurance athlete, mountain climber, and a certified yoga instructor. She has run marathons in every state in the U. S (and then some), competed in 10 Ironmans, and 20 ultramarathons. A non-smoker, Isabella was diagnosed in February 2018 with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. Lung cancer disease kills more women and men in the U. S. and worldwide than any other cancer. People mistakenly believe that only smokers get lung cancer, when in fact 65% of people who get new lung cancer diagnoses never smoked or are former smokers. Scientists believe the rise in cases even as the rate of smoking decreases is linked to environmental factors such as pollution driven by fossil fuels and exposure to radon. We spoke by telephone on Good Friday, April 10, 2020, as she was in her hometown, Crowley, Louisiana, stopping for a brief visit with family before continuing the last 1000 miles of her 3000-mile cross-country bike ride across the U. S. She is on a mission to raise awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer to facilitate early diagnoses as well as educate on the importance of researching effective treatments. She began her trek on March 10, 2020, in San Diego, CA, and finished April 20, 2020, on the Atlantic coast in Jacksonville, FL. While she had originally had plans to bike as part of a larger group and hold cancer awareness events across the U. S., including the Miles Perret Center in Lafayette, the Covid-19 pandemic changed all that. She plans to come back when it's safe to be in a crowd and hold public events. Isabella de la Houssaye and her husband, David Crane, biked across the U. S. to raise awareness of lung cancer, its symptoms, and the importance of research for treatments. To learn more about Isabella, lung cancer, and enjoy her beautiful blog on mindfulness, please visit https://bikebreathebelieve.org/ Lung cancer is typically diagnosed at late Stage III or IV and there are few symptoms until the cancer has advanced and spread throughout the body. For people with Stage IV lung cancer, the five-year survival rate is less than 10%. When de la Houssaye was first diagnosed in early 2018, the cancer was in her lungs, adrenal glands, bones, spine, and six tumors were in her brain. She had been experiencing severe Level 10 pain in her sacrum in her back area, and doctors initially thought it must be a pulled muscle because she was so active. No doctor thought that she might have lung cancer, and she had continuing racing and winning her age group in marathons and the Ironman competition. But by the time of her diagnosis, her sacrum was 100% eaten up by tumors and she was bedridden, dying. Ironically, an MRI taken to diagnose what was thought to be a sports injury revealed tumors in her spine and a CT scan confirmed Stage IV cancer, yet her insurance company didn't want to approve a PET scan because she was dying. She fought to get this biomarker test and the results allowed her physicians to target the best treatment based upon her specific genetic mutation. Within 24 hours of ingesting Avastin, she felt an immediate difference in her body as it responded positively; she was also able to avoid tough, old-school chemotherapy which would have been much more brutal. The tumors in her spine shrank over the next few months. She was one of the lucky ones for whom the targeted treatment worked. “Never give up. Focus on what you have rather than what you have lost. Stay active. Keep moving. Set goals. It’s not survival of the fittest, but survival of the most adaptable.

I’ve lived in areas where it gets really cold, and I’ve lived where it’s warm most of the time. I’ve lived up north in Ohio and in Maine, and now I’m in sunny Florida. I definitely prefer the warmer climate. But today’s story is about being cold. Really, really cold. Dan Burton brought his fat tire bike to the coast of Antarctica, and he biked from there to the South Pole. That’s 750 miles, and it’s uphill, and it’s against the wind, and it’s in temperatures that are colder than just about anyone would be comfortable with. But he did it – and in fact, he was the first one to do it. And actually, it happened 5 years ago, and no one has done it again since then – at least not at the time we recorded this conversation, which is early 2019. And I learned something really interesting. The elevation at the South Pole is 9300 feet. But only 300 feet of that is actual land. The 9000 feet of elevation on top of that land is solid ice. So at the South Pole Dan was standing on ice that was almost 2 miles thick. In fact, during our conversation he mentions that he actually walked over some mountains but he wasn’t able to see them, because he was actually on top of them because of that thick layer of ice. I’m always intrigued by stories of human endurance like this, so I really loved hearing this story first hand from Dan. Here’s where you can learn more about his expedition: Blog: http://epicsouthpole.blogspot.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/EpicBiking Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SouthPoleEpic/ Book: https://amzn.to/2VVRrHR (Amazon aff link) Here’s the video Dan and I discuss, about the lady that fell into the crevasse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIGbKLmEkKM And if you like this podcast, you’re welcome to buy me a coffee – WhatWasThatLike.com/coffee

If you listen to podcasts on Ironman and endurance events you may have heard of the Ultimate Triathlon. Luke has given a lot of interviews on his journey including a terrific pair of interviews that you can find at www.zentriathlon.com . That being said this is the kind of story that I absolutely love because it is something that if you didn't know he'd already done it you would say that what he did was impossible. But he did it. Luke Tyburski put together the idea of the Ultimate Triathlon because he says he was "escaping from life" and wanted a "massive deep challenge" You can find full details about The Ultimate Triathlon at http://theultimatetriathlon.co/ He swam across the straight of Gibraltar, Biked through Spain to France and then ran the equivalent of 14 marathons across France to Monaco. It's crazy, right? But he did it. You have to hear it to believe it. Because Luke has given several interviews about this event I do try to stick totally to the highlights of the event. Even with that condensing a 12 day event into one interview makes for a nice long podcast. I want to give a great shout out to Warren Pole for connecting me with Luke. Luke made a documentary of his journey which has just released. I haven't seen it myself but I'm going to and Luke ends the interview with a very special offer to anybody who wants to put together a group showing of the documentary. You can find Luke on twitter @luketyburski He's also on Instagram as @luketyburski Thank you very much Luke for being on the Mile after Mile Podcast. And as always check out my adventures at www.amysaysso.com
