TAKING the Bible "Transfigurally" with Kevin Vanhoozer (ep. 69)

On this episode of the podcast, we interview one of my most trusted teachers, Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer (who also happens to be a world class theologian!) It's a conversation about what it means to read the Bible “transfigurally”: to take seriously the literal meaning of the text but also to make sure we follow the text as it leads us to see and savor Jesus Christ. Among the questions we discuss: How do we take each passage of Scripture on its own terms while also being attentive to the way it points us to Jesus? Is there value in a "step-by-step" method for reading the Bible? What does it mean (and not mean) to take the bible "literally"? What are some of the bad reading habits we've picked up and what are some better ones? What does it mean to be "biblical"? On this episode, Chad chats with Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School about his latest book "Mere Christian Hermeneutics: Transfiguring What It Means to Read the Bible Theologically" with Zondervan Academic. Dr. Vanhoozer explains his thesis of how we ought to read and respond to the Bible through the lens of Christ's transfiguration. He received his PhD from Cambridge University, served as Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Edinburgh, has written over 20 books, and is currently Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity. His work covers many areas of theology and has inspired and influenced many to study the Bible, including Chad. We're thankful to Dr. Vanhoozer for taking the time to meet and to Zondervan for providing a copy of his book!Stay on the lookout for more episodes coming soon and we hope you enjoy!uy "Mere Christian Hermeneutics"Subscribe to our Patreontwitter: @theologyxianFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ahistoryofchristiantheology

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Kevin J. Vanhoozer about his recent work in biblical hermeneutics. In our conversation, we discuss Mere Christian Hermeneutics: Transfiguring What It Means to Read the Bible Theologically (Zondervan). Topics include: What does it mean to be biblical? What is the literal sense? Can biblical interpretation change the world?   Vanhoozer is Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His other books that we mention in this discussion are Is There Meaning in this Text, Dictionary for Theological Interpretation, and Biblical Authority after Babel.     This podcast is hosted by Ched Spellman (https://linktr.ee/chedspellman). “Many Christians wonder how to read the text of Scripture well, rightly, and faithfully. After all, developing a strong theory of interpretation has always been presented by two enormous challenges:A variety of actual interpretations of the Bible, even within the context of a single community of believers. The plurality of reading cultures—denominational, disciplinary, historical, and global interpretive communities—each with its own frame of reference. In response, influential theologian Kevin J. Vanhoozer puts forth a "mere" Christian hermeneutic—essential principles for reading the Bible as Scripture everywhere, at all times, and by all Christians. To center his thought, Vanhoozer turns to the accounts of Jesus' transfiguration—a key moment in the broader economy of God's revelation—to suggest that spiritual or "figural" interpretation is not a denial or distortion of the literal sense but, rather, its glorification.Irenic without resorting to bland ecumenical tolerance, Mere Christian Hermeneutics is a powerful and convincing call for both church and academy to develop reading cultures that enable and sustain the kind of unity and diversity that a "mere Christian hermeneutic" should call for and encourage.”Youtube - https://youtu.be/HxTlkNAkbh4Audio - https://andymilleriii.com/media/podcastApple -  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/more-to-the-story-with-dr-andy-miller/id1569988895?uo=4Check out this book here - https://zondervanacademic.com/products/mere-christian-hermeneuticsIf you are interested in learning more about my two video-accompanied courses, Contender: Going Deeper in the Book of Jude andHeaven and Other Destinations: A Biblical Journey Beyond this World , visit courses.andymilleriii.comAnd don't forget about my most recent book, Contender, which is available on Amazon! Five Steps to Deeper Teaching and Preaching - Recently, I updated this PDF document and added a 45-minute teaching video with slides, explaining this tool. The more we are online, the more disembodied we are. As Christians, we want to be rooted in a time and in a place. In The Art of Living in Season, Sylvie Vanhoozer invites readers to join this community of little saints and to follow them not only at Christmas but also throughout the whole year. Each chapter introduces a new santon (little saint) and opens up another aspect of our annual pilgrimage toward Christ. Structured as weekly reflections and illustrated with Vanhoozer's own botanical illustrations, this book invites us to follow Christ in our own places and seasons of life, beginning by keeping in step with the rhythms of nature and the church calendar. The Art of Living in Season is a companion for everyday saints who wonder how they can follow Jesus-what they can give him-wherever, whenever, and whoever they are. Check out Sylvie's website and get the book.If you want to purchase a santon from France or another here. Preaching is an instance of “speaking into the air” (i.e., oral communication), but how effectual is this form of the ministry of the Word? In this 2023 CPT conference message, Dr. Vanhoozer begins by contrasting bully pulpits (an influential public platform from which to persuade) and “kata-pulpits” (speaking “in accordance with” Scripture) and commends the metaphor of the preacher as curator: one who uses the pulpit as a place to exhibit (to preserve, present, and promote) Scripture as the word of God, taking as his “text” Heinrich Bullinger's claim in the Second Helvetic Confession that “the preaching of the word of God is the word of God.”

Despite efforts to raise starting pay and implement a step-and-grade pay plan, there remain 90 to 105 openings among the budgeted 716 full-time sworn officers. VanHoozer has engaged in community outreach, explaining his policing philosophy, and gathering feedback from civic groups and officers. The department has also focused on improving technology, including the use of a real-time crime center to enhance crime-solving capabilities and precision policing. The chief is also working on initiatives like the Community Assistance Response Team (CART), a civilian program to respond to low-level calls and free up sworn officers for serious crimes. Additionally, efforts are being made to increase community engagement, particularly with high school students and communities experiencing higher levels of crime. The ultimate goal is to create a safer community and build trust between the police and the public.   STORY 5: cabin   Cobb Landmarks arranged for a log cabin restorer, Vic Hood, to evaluate the Power-Jackson Cabin in east Cobb. The purpose was to assess if the cabin could be preserved and to determine the scope of restoration work needed. The cabin is a rare example of a "rived log house," where logs are split, creating a rounded exterior and a smooth interior surface. The cabin's preservation was in question as a developer had proposed an 18-home development on the site, but the application was withdrawn in May. Cobb Landmarks awaits Hood's report on the cabin's potential restoration.   Story 6: rugby   Atlanta's professional rugby team, Rugby ATL, will be relocating as it has been acquired by a new ownership group. The specific location of the team's new base has not been disclosed yet. The team was originally founded in 2018 by Marcus Calloway and played its games at Lupo Family Field at Life University in Marietta. After suffering flooding damage, the team's home venue was moved to Silverbacks Park in Atlanta. Rugby ATL had a successful run, including two consecutive playoff berths and winning the Eastern Conference Championship in 2021. The new ownership group's decision to relocate the team marks the end of its time in Atlanta, but the league CEO didn't rule out a potential MLR return to the city in the future.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Drake- Ingles 4- Powers   Story 7: SPORTS   (Piece will have intro-outtro pieces built in)   *****Sports Report*****   We're back with final thoughts after this     Break: JRM - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Cobb's police chief defended the department's use of a controversial facial recognition technology Tuesday as county commissioners approved a new contract with firm Clearview AI. The unanimous vote will extend the department's use of the technology for three years after an initial trial period, costing the county around $18,000 per year. Cobb's use of the technology — which uses artificial intelligence to “scrape” photos across the internet and find possible matches of criminal suspects — will be limited to narrow investigative functions, VanHoozer said. Practices like scanning crowds at public events will be barred under departmental policy, he assured commissioners and the public. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As this podcast approaches the 50th episode, I thought it might be interesting to create an episode of highlights, some of the best moments. The guests who were the most surprising, most unexpected, and who had the greatest impact, at least to me -- were the theologians. I expected these scholars and churchmen to have some pushback, even the ones who seemed to have a clear affinity for the arts. We live in a culture drowning in entertainment, amusing ourselves to death, as Neil Postman put it. Surely, these men must have some cautions and concerns for us. But what they gave us was a clear picture of the WHY Christian films are important, and the WHAT'S that Christian films should be. They painted a very noble view of the importance of good Christian filmmaking. These 3 men helped to frame a strategy and glorious purpose for Christian filmmakers. I met Dr. Mark Coppenger when I visited the Franklin branch of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mark helped me form an advisory board for Glorious Films and has become a good friend. More than once he walked me off the ledge when I was close to abandoning Christian filmmaking. Dr. Coppenger was a Professor of Christian Philosophy & Ethics at Southern, where he supervised -- and this is where it gets interesting -- he supervised a graduate program called Christianity and the Arts. And within that program, Mark was responsible for a track called Aesthetic Theology. So Marc has spent a significant part of his career thinking about the relationship between theology and aesthetics, and he wrote a book called “The Skeptic's Guide to Arts in the Church.” Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer wrote a book called Pictures at a Theological Exhibition. The title intrigued me, and I bought it, but it sat on my shelf for some time -- until I had to fly to a shoot for a commercial I was directing, and I threw this book in my bag to read on the plane. I couldn't put the book down. In fact, I couldn't get out of the first chapter. I had to read it, underline it, and then write out what engaged me in this book. When I told Dr. Vanhoozer that he took it as a critique that he had not written well enough. But that wasn't the case. What his book expressed were ideas so new to me, and I wrestled with them to apply the lessons to being a Christian filmmaker. It was like water for a parched filmmakers soul. I knew I had to try to get him on the podcast to engage with him on these issues. Dr. Vanhoozer is a prolific author, and Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. It was an honor to have him as a guest. I knew Dr. Coppenger and Dr. Vanhoozer both had an affinity for the arts, but I wasn't sure where the men at 9 Marks Ministries stood. I've listened to almost every podcast 9 Marks produced, and I wanted to know what they thought about Christian film, so I reached out to them and the editorial director, Dr. Jonathan Leeman, accepted my invitation. Jonathan did not disappoint. He gave me a lot to think about, and he introduced me to the brilliant concept of a right moral ecology. While he is an editorial director, a pastor, and author of a number of books -- he is also an adjunct professor for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Reformed Theological Seminary. So there you have it -- three theologians who believe there is an important role that Christian filmmakers can play in the life of the church.

The Philosophical Task of the Interpreter- Culturology Sometimes it is difficult for people to equate the ministry with the head, since the essence of spiritual life seems to have a heavy bent to wards matters of the heart. Thus, when people think of biblical interpretation, whether for practical application or ministerial/teaching tools, the emphasis is normally outside the realm of philosophical thought. However, although Christianity is much more than an intellectual pursuit, it is certainly not less than such a pursuit! The interpretive task is performed and taught by humans conscious of the world they live in, which brings Christianity into the realm of philosophy and worldview. Orientation That introductory paragraph is something that I am quite confident of, but not something I have always been aware of. In recent months, I have personally been forced to walk within this philosophical awareness in my own transition from a life-long upbringing in a Free-will Baptist denomination to the Presbyterian and Reformed denomination. My transition to a new denomination was possible by two factors: biblical conviction, and a growing awareness of presuppositions and culture. In God's providence, my own transition took place in tandem with enrolling with Moody Bible Institute. How this background experience relates and informs the philosophical task of the interpreter will be made evident in the following sections. Connections Interpreting Scripture has taught me a necessary question to ask in the interpretive process: Is there a true correlation between philosophy, culture and spiritual formation? The textbook “Everyday Theology” has been an excellent study in seeking an informed answer to the question. Kevin J. Vanhoozer implies that this is so: “describing culture as a process of spiritual formation is not to say that we are helpless and hapless victims but rather to call our attention to the fact that spiritual formation is happening to us and to our children all the time” (31). As this process of life happens, we all develop a worldview with a growing array of presuppositions. It is simply impossible to separate this reality of human existence from our processing of information, especially when it comes to biblical interpretation. This is the subjective element of philosophy that must be realized- that everyone who comes to the text of Scripture comes with presuppositions, or to put it strongly, biases. This philosophical awareness has flourished tremendously in this class, but it has done so from the foundation of a previous class Story and Structure of the Bible in which the textbook “Introduction to Biblical Interpretation” introduced me to the concept of presuppositions, defined as preunderstanding: “preunderstanding may be defined as a body of assumptions and attitudes which a person brings to the perception and interpretation of reality or any aspect of it” (Klein et al. 154). While this concept was a minor point in that class, I can see that it laid a healthy foundation for the cultural aspect of this class. Insights The way that Vanhoozer builds upon that foundation of preunderstanding and connects it to the whole pursuit of the philosophical task is by calling readers to implement Romans 12.2 in a comprehensive way: Christians must learn to read the Bible and culture alike […] ‘Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind' (Rom.12.2). The apostolic exhortation confronts us with a question: In which cultural world of meaning do we dwell? (Vanhoozer et al. 35) This concise analysis of Romans 12.2 connects the practical and ministerial task of interpretation with the philosophical task, since the call of Christian growth is a renewing of the mind, and proper obedience to that text requires one to come to terms with the preunderstandings and cultures to which we belong. This has been an incredibly impactful point, since it helps me to avoid undue separation of the philosophical aspect of interpretation from the practical and ministerial aspects, as if they are parallel lines that never intersect (or overlap). Further, the philosophical or preunderstanding dilemma may only be downplayed by those who do so precisely because of a preunderstanding! Conclusion Although philosophy does not answer all the questions of interpretation, I am convinced by this class and Vanhoozer's implementation of culture and Romans 12.2 that the philosophical task is an indispensable facet of the Christian life. Further, one does not interpret in a vacuum. Instead they “wend their Christian way through particular times and places, each with its own problems and possibilities” (16). Since culture is directly tied to life, the philosophical task of biblical interpretation is tied to an awareness of culture and the presuppositions that belong to all of us. This is a pursuit that I wish to implement for the rest of my life, and one that I see as being especially helpful in my upcoming philosophy and theology classes with Moody.

Interpreting the Bible and Culture- Culturology The interpretation of culture and the Bible are two disciplines which work to arrive at meaning. This represents a presupposition of an objective quality, both in cultural texts and biblical texts. That is to say, there is a tangible, definitive message in cultural texts and biblical texts that can be interpreted, else the disciplines of interpretation would be exercises in vanity and uncertainty. To understand both disciplines properly, they must be explored in their relative qualities, not only in the way that they are similarly performed, but also in the way in which they overlap in the interpretive process. First, the terms should be defined. Cultural interpretation is that which seeks to uncover the worldview behind a cultural text, in the cultural text, and brought out from the cultural text (Vanhoozer et al. 45). Biblical interpretation consists of uncovering the meaning of the biblical text, both in content and context. This is normally performed by a step by step process, such as investigating the categories of culture, time, and situation (Duvall and Hays 41). Since a cultural text is sometimes abstract, consisting of an icon or word, it is important to understand where it comes from, what it is, and where it is going. This lends to a multiperspectival interpretation, meaning that right interpretation occurs by utilizing multiple disciplines to uncover the thickness of what is occurring in any given cultural text (Vanhoozer et al. 45). In concise terms, a cultural text comes from a worldview of the author(s), contains a worldview in the text itself, and seeks to cultivate a worldview in the reader(s). In like manner, biblical interpretation considers the content alongside the context of the author and the audience. Furthermore, the implications of the text are also explored, investigating the impact and significance upon contemporary readers, commonly defined as application. What can be noticed in both cultural and biblical interpretation is the presence of culture within the interpretive process. In cultural interpretation, culture is the object; in biblical interpretation, culture is the subject. Nevertheless, culture is that which must be dealt with if meaningful interpretation is to be performed. In the process of biblical interpretation, culture is an element of separation between then and today. Consequently, biblical interpretation does not understand meaning without understanding right application of the text, which can only be done when one properly understands their own contemporary culture. Thus, there is a front-end element of culture and a back-end element of culture, whereby the interpreter must do due diligence in understanding the original cultural audience and the contemporary cultural audience. In like manner, cultural texts can only be significant if the meaning of the text is understood alongside the cultural context. The cultural icon of Walmart's yellow smiley face is largely insignificant if the reader does not understand the cultural context that it represents and the world it promises to create in its customers (i.e. low-price purchase options). Conversely, the biblical text, “When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.'” (English Standard Version, John 11.43) is largely insignificant if the context of the statement is not understood, such as Jesus being the speaker, Lazarus being called to come to life, and the presence of a watching crowd. Contextual understanding is required both in the interpretation of culture and the Bible. Whether pastors or teachers, one can hardly overemphasize the importance of cultivating a hermeneutic of culture and the Bible. Living in a wealthy society, or a free-market economic system such as the United States, requires a perception of the culture when teaching on the Bible's warning against topics such as the love of money and possessions. Being ignorant to the cultural trends in place can cause one to miss important opportunities in biblical application. Furthermore, scripture impresses upon its readers not be “conformed to this world” (Romans 12.2a), which can only be understood in light of culture. For proper teaching and learning, cultural and biblical interpretation must be considered as necessary aides to one another.

At the heart of the Protestant Reformation is the conviction that Scripture alone is the infallible source for the Christian faith. Perhaps no doctrine is more fundamental to the divide between Protestants and Catholics/Orthodox than sola scriptura. No small amount of ink has been used, not to mention the blood shed, in the debate over this Protestant principle. In this episode, I'm joined by prolific Evangelical scholar Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer who is well known for his influential works on hermeneutics and Scripture. We talk about his book, Biblical Authority After Babel, and ask questions like, "what does it mean for the Bible to have authority?" and "what did the Reformers mean by sola scriptura?" We sought to clarify misunderstandings, and of particular interest, Dr. Vanhoozer responds to some of the most common objections to sola scriptura. It was an incredibly enjoyable conversation, and I hope you enjoy it. A few years ago I got on an airplane with a book called Pictures at a Theological Exhibition. I thought I'd be able to get through 5 or 6 chapters. I only made it through half of the first chapter. I crawled through the chapter bit by bit, reading and rereading, underlining and taking notes on the end papers - Not because it was hard reading, but because the concepts and implications were fascinating. It took the return flight home to get through that first chapter, which was titled The Discarded Imagination: Metaphors by which a Holy Nation lives. That chapter alone is worth the price of the book. A few months later I took the same flight and same book again, and returned to that same chapter to digest it even more. The author of that book is my guest on this episode. His name is Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer. Dr. Vanhoozer is Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
