"Radical trauma requires radical treatment."In this episode we talk with Navy fighter pilot and founder of the No Fallen Heroes foundation, Mr. Matthew "Whiz" Buckley. He tells us about growing up watching for Soviet bombers off the Jersey shore, the disaster-laden start to his Navy career, the sheer terror of a night landing on an aircraft carrier, and the challenges of attending Top Gun as a reservist. We also discuss how his efforts to end veteran suicide became a much bigger endeavor to heal trauma of all sorts through psychedelic assisted therapy. In the Free Fire Area, we reminisce on our own childhoods and the toughest video games we used to play.We need your support: • Like, share, comment, and subscribe. We speak with Army veteran and ARC owner, Mr. Mike Klemmer. We discuss being a broken-hearted college dropout, having a military specialty that gets phased out, driving through mine fields, building a Foward Operating Base from the ground up, and how to go from hating coffee to starting a coffee company. In the Free Fire Area, we discuss which historic sports teams we wanted to be on - despite having minimal athletic abilities ourselves. We need your support: - Like, share, comment, and subscribe. "I had a hit-man tell me that I needed to find God."*This episode discusses the very serious topics of sex trafficking and exploitation of children. Our guest was a federal prosecutor with a focus on those heinous crimes. Please proceed with caution.*In the first episode of our recent road trip, we're at the University of Virgina to speak with Marine Corps veteran and former federal prosecutor (and so, so many other things) Mr. Scott Jones. We discuss his multiple stints at the UVA law school, how searching for IEDs from a jet is ineffective, the way perspective changes after losing friends in combat, why prosecuting traffic violations sucks, the importance of bringing scumbags to justice, and the difficulties of returning to the UVA medical school when you are old enough to be your peers' parent. In the Free Fire Area, we discuss the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's return to the USA, other founding fathers, and our terrible pirating skills. We need your support: - Like, share, comment, and subscribe. Mike Morgan launched Flags of the Fallen on Veterans Day this past year. After the tragic losses of 13 military members in the Afghan withdrawal of August 2021, Mike had an idea. Mike made a connection with 13 service members lost and the 13 stripes on the American flag that these brave men and women were defending. He thought, “How can I show my gratitude?” Not being a veteran himself, Mike consulted several veteran friends to make sure he created these 13 flags with proper protocols and insignia. During those conversations it was impressed on Mike to create these for others too. He found that every veteran he spoke with knew someone that gave that ultimate sacrifice. This was a way to honor and remember them and show gratitude to their families. Flags of the Fallen Flags of the Fallen was founded to “remember those we lost by caring for those they left behind by building wooden flags for their families and loved ones.” They build wooden flags for the families of both fallen military members or first responders. After cross commissioning from Air Force to Army, multiple combat deployments in OIF and OEF, and helping mold young military leaders at both West Point and USAFA… Ret. Maj. Pete Fretwell & Taylor Kiland - Co-Authors of "Lessons from the Hanoi Hotel" Pete was doing a some work for his graduate class when he read Good to Great a business management book by James Collins. The book referenced Admiral James Stockdale and his imprisonment as a POW in the Hanoi Hilton. It wasn't until 2005 that Pete saw a discussion panel on C-SPAN that included several POW's and Taylor, a former naval officer and military history author of over 18 books. Pete contacted her and their project started. For seven years the pair researched to create the book; Lessons From the Hanoi Hilton: Six Characteristics of High Performance Teams. It took all that time to answer the question: "Why are so many of those that were imprisoned, abused, and tortured in the North Vietnamese prison camp so resilient and successful in subsequent years?" The answer would be Admiral James Stockdale and his example of leadership. Pete is looking to expand his research to include Stockdale's farming background as a foundation of leadership. Eryn comes from a military family. Her father served 28 years in the Army and retired as a Colonel, her brother is a graduate of West Point, and her husband is a Captain in the Army. Growing up, Eryn learned every day what it meant to serve one’s country, and after graduating from Florida State University, headed to Jacksonville as a Teach For America high school English teacher. Given Jacksonville’s proximity to two naval bases and the strong NJROTC culture, Eryn got the chance to bring the military into her classroom every day and expose her students to the opportunities the military could provide them. Today, Eryn is the director of Teach For America’s Military Veterans Initiative, helping to ensure that military veterans and spouses are aware of teaching as a second career, and that students across the country benefit from their talent and commitment. Prior to this role, Eryn began TFA’s  Military Spouse Affinity Group to provide support for military spouses on staff who might feel particularly isolated, and gives them an outlet to communicate regularly about the issues facing military spouses – having spouses deployed, transferring to another bases, and leaving community and friends. In 2015 she was named Fort Benning’s Military Spouse of the Year by Military Spouse Magazine. Show Notes:  http://VeteranPodcast.com/012

Jonathan’s dramatic work has been staged at the Guthrie Theater, Library of Congress, Maryland Center for the Performing Arts, Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC and Portland Center Stage in Portland, OR among others. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in the Village Voice, Iowa Review, and the North American Review and Glimmer Train, and his work featured by the New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Inside Higher Ed, the Associated Press, and NPR. He has received support from the Bob Woodruff Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, the Smithsonian Institute, the Library of Congress, Metabolic Studios, Minnesota Humanities Center, Humanities Iowa, Oregon Humanities Center and others. Jonathan lives with his family in Austin, TX. The Purpose The Telling Project is a performing arts non-profit that employs theater to deepen our understanding of the military and veterans’ experience. Greater understanding fosters receptivity, easing veterans’ transitions back to civil society, and allowing communities to benefit from the skills and experience they bring with them. Through this understanding, a community deepens its connection to its veterans, itself, and its place in the nation and the world. The Work The most direct path to understanding veterans’ experience is person-to-person contact.  With the dramatic decline in the numbers serving in the military – less than one percent of the population over the last eleven years of war – this contact will not happen through day-to-day life. It must be created and supported.  Through performance, The Telling Project puts veterans and military family members in front of their communities to share their stories.  We give veterans and military family members the opportunity to speak, and their communities the opportunity to listen.
