His grandfather's gripping, historically significant account, just published by Amsterdam Publishers, revisits Ignacy Chiger's desperate struggle to evade Nazi persecution in wartime Lvov, Poland, where he hid with his family for 14 months in the city's underground sewers, with the help of an unlikely hero. The book stands as a compelling companion piece to Krystyna Chiger's 2008 international best-seller, the inspiration behind the 2011 film "In Darkness," from acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Time magazine film critic Richard Corliss called the movie "a thrilling adventure picture—as if Anne Frank had found an Inglourious Basterd to help her make 'The Great Escape.'" Majdan je to nejsilnější, co jsem zažil. Ve Lvově jsem hrál na cimbál klukům bez nohou, bez rukou„Češi si to nechtějí připustit nebo se na to snaží zapomenout, ale Ukrajinci – alespoň ti zakarpatští – nás skutečně mají rádi. Znají nás, jezdí sem pracovat, jejich řeč je velmi podobná moravštině. Tyhle vztahy jsou pro nás bohatství,“ říká v nové epizodě sourozeneckého podcastu Hej, Slované cestovatel Jiří Eibensteiner. Spolu s bratry Jakubem a Lukášem Novosadovými vzpomíná mimo jiné na to, jak navštívíl kyjevské náměstí Majdan, kde zažil atmosféru revolučních dní, nebo jak ve Lvově ve špitále muzicíroval zraněným vojákům či na Koločavě postiženým dětem v dětském domově. „Na Majdan jsem jel, protože jsem nechápal, jak je možné, že celý svět sleduje, co se tam děje za zvěrstva a je mu to jedno,“ uvádí Eibensteiner. „Byl jsem tam sice jenom dvě noci, ale zažil jsem neskutečné naštvání lidí, kteří byli odhodlaní nenechat si ukrást stát. Kdo tam nebyl osobně, nemůže to pochopit. Když jsem vylezl v Kyjevě z náraží, jako bych přijel doprostřed apokalypsy. Rozbité centrum města, barikády, lidi formující se v polovojenské jednotky. Žáci ve věku dvanáct a třináct let v kuklách, s baseballkami, s přilbami z motorek se sešli a snažili se vyjádřit nesouhlas s tím, co se tam tenkrát odehrálo. Nikdy jsem nic takového neviděl, ale bylo neskutečné pozorovat, jak se během pár dní dokáží lidi zmobilizovat a zformovat.“„Na Vánoce a Nový rok jsem několikrát naložili starou škodovku hudebními nástroji a vyrazili jsme hrát slováckou muziku na Ukrajinu. Byli jsme ve Lvově, Ivano-Frankivsku nebo Koločavě a dalších městech. No a ve Lvově jsme hráli klukům, kteří neměli ruce, neměli nohy, leželi ve špitále a my jim tam hráli na cimbál. Vlastně to byla bizarní, ale velmi lidská situace. Díval jsem se jim do očí, někteří měli výraz veselejší a zdravější než já, který jsem zrovna byl drobně nachlazen, ale někteří měli naprosto mrtvý výraz a já jsem tušil, že ten se až do konce jejich dnů nejspíš už nezmění. Tehdy jsem brečel,“ dodává Eibensteiner.„No a dětem jsme hrál ve Vilšanech, což je dědina kousek od Koločavy. Překonáš patnáct kilometrů strašlivé cesty a přijedeš do dětského domova, kde jsou děti opuštěné rodiči, je jich tam asi dvě stě a jsou to děti s mentálním nebo fyzickým postižením. Některé nemají končetiny, plazí se po zemi, další mají třeba obrovitánské hlavy. Ale pořád jsou to děti. Před válkou to v domově fungovalo tak, že tam bylo asi čtyřicet zaměstnanců a během roku neustále přijížděli dobrovolníci z celého světa. Dneska je tam včetně ředitele zaměstnanců pět nebo šest, často tam nefunguje elektrika, ale dětí musí domov obhospodařit pořád stejně. Dovedete si to vůbec představit?“ ptá se Eibensteiner.Takových historek je nejnovější epizoda plná. Po mesecu dni se je v ponedeljek v ljubljanskem Cankarjevem domu sklenil Festival Literature sveta - Fabula, in gost zadnjega večera je bil vsestranski intelektualec Philippe Sands, avtor knjige »Vrnitev v Lemberg« (Lemberg je zgodovinsko nemško ime mesta Lvov v Ukrajini) – ki je bil tudi naš gost – eden od njegovih ključnih motov pri opisih razlogov in posledic strahot druge vojne je »potrebno je razumeti klavca in ne le žrtev«. Pripravili smo tudi poročilo z okrogle mize v okviru Tedna slovenske drame v Kranju, na kateri so ta teden gledališčniki iz Madžarske, Slovaške, Srbije, Avstrije in Slovenije govorili o umetniški svobodi gledališč na kocki v politično zaznamovanih okoliščinah. Izpostavljamo tudi izvirno razstavo z naslovom »Ne uničujte Slovenski Jezik!!« (zadnji pridevnik in samostalnik z veliko začetnico in neustrezen sklon pa sta seveda povzeta citata iz enega od dopisov inštitutskim jezikoslovcem) in podnaslovom »Pisma inštitutu«, na kateri je avtorica Agata Tomažič razstavila izbor dopisov Inštitutu za slovenski jezik Frana Ramovša ZRC SAZU o takšnih in drugačnih predstavah o spremembah našega jezika. Ljubljanska galerija ŠKUC, dediščina progresivnih študentskih generacij druge polovice prejšnega stoletja, gosti razstavo z naslovom »Jedka Palestina«, palestinske avtorice Samire Badran, v kateri na svojstven način upodablja izkušnje židovskega uničevanja Palestincev v Palestini. Za zaključek smo pripravili pogovor s fotografom Klavdijem Slubanom, ki je v Viteški dvorani ljubljanskih Križank pripravil razstavo analognih posnetkov trenutkov ustvarjanja našega programa z naslovom »Tihi pogled na Ars« - svoje pa je v pogovoru povedala tudi odgovorna urednica programa Ingrid Kovač Brus. Rýžování zlata na Aljašce si můžete vyzkoušet i dnes, ale rychlé zbohatnutí nečekejte. Nový plán izraelské vlády umožní vznik dalších židovských osad. Přijímání uprchlíků během migrační krize bylo pro německé obce povinné, někde jich ale vzali víc než museli a rozhodně nelitují. Ukrajinské úřady zadržely podezřelého ze spáchání sobotní vraždy bývalého předsedy ukrajinského parlamentu Andrije Parubije. V neděli to podle agentur Reuters a AFP oznámil ukrajinský prezident Volodymyr Zelenskyj. Atentát proběhl v sobotu ve Lvově. On the afternoon of September 6, 1848, the progressive Rabbi Avraham Kohn (1807-1848) of Lemberg (Lvov in Polish) in Austrian Galicia, was poisoned to death. Who assassinated him? What were their motives? With the Austrian takeover of Galicia following the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, the ancient, large and prestigious Jewish communities of that region experienced seismic changes. Lvov was the largest and most prominent Jewish community in all of Galicia. In this large urban center, many factions within the Jewish community arose in the early decades of the 19th century. When the minority progressive faction imported a rabbi from Austria and installed him as rabbi of their temple in 1843, tensions rose, and the Orthodox elite establishment, as well as the Orthodox majority of the community were vehemently opposed to his arrival. The Baal Shem Tov sends his talmid Moshe Meshel to deliver two letters, both to residents of Lvov. The first, to the Av Beis Din R. Chaim Rappaport, contains mysterious instructions for an upcoming journey. The second, to R. Chaim Yisroel the Potter, is delivered in silence. Unbeknownst to anyone, Chaim Yisroel is a hidden tzaddik who must act soon to prevent a calamity.

Meanwhile, R. Chaim Rappaport must travel to an abandoned estate outside Lvov to learn the first four chapters of Hilchos Brochos. A torrential rain almost prevents the journey, but as soon as the Rov begins to learn, the clouds part and the sun shines forth. He drinks a cup of water from a nearby spring before returning to Lvov.

Several weeks later, in Elul, R. Chaim Rappaport visits the Baal Shem Tov in Medzibuzh and hears the underlying story behind his mission to the abandoned estate. 160 years previously, a talmid chacham from Prague moved to Lvov. Known as “R. Shmuel Tzadok, the opponent of Kabbalah and Mussar", his hostility to Mussar, and to Kabbalah in which he had no faith, he implanted in his sons R. Moshe and R. Yehudah Arye.

Poet's don't typically compete for “coolest book cover,” and it's probably because Zbigniew Herbert won years ago. Today's poem is his tender look at poverty, pleasure, and irretrievable loss. Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924, in Poland in the city of Lvov, which is now a part of the Ukraine. His grandfather was an Englishman who settled in Lvov to teach English. His father, a former member of the Legions that had fought for restoration of Poland's independence, was a bank manager. Herbert's formal education began in Lvov and continued under German occupation in the form of clandestine study at the underground King John Casimir University, where he majored in Polish literature. He was a member of the underground resistance movement. In 1944, he moved to Krakow, and three years later he graduated from the University of Krakow with a master's degree in economics. He also received a law degree from Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun and studied philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Henryk Elzenberg.During the 1950s, Herbert worked at many low-paying jobs because he refused to write within the framework of official Communist guidelines. After widespread riots against Soviet control in 1956 brought about a political “thaw,” Herbert became an administrator at the Union of Polish Composers and published his first collection, Struna swiatla [The Chord of Light] (Czytelnik, 1956). The book immediately placed him among the most prominent representatives of the “Contemporaries” (young poets and writers associated with the weekly Contemporary Times).In 1957, Herbert published his second collection of verse, Hermes, pies i gwiazda [Hermes, the Dog and the Star] (Czytelnik). Four years later, he published his third book of poems, Studium przedmiotu [Study of the Object] (Czytelnik, 1961). In 1968, his Selected Poems, translated into English by Czeslaw Milosz and Peter Dale Scott, was released in both the United States and England, making Herbert one of the most popular contemporary poets in the English-speaking world. In 1971, he released the first Polish edition of Selected Poems.Herbert's 1983 collection, Raport z oblezonego miasta i inne wiersze [Report from the Besieged City] (Instytut Literacki), dealt with the ethical problems Poland faced while under martial law. The book was issued simultaneously through an emigré publishing house and as an underground edition in Poland. He also published a number of essay collections and works of drama. In 1962, he released his famous work, Barbarzyńca wogrodzie [Barbarian in the Garden] (Czytelnik), which was eventually translated into numerous languages.Herbert's numerous awards include the Kościelski Foundation Prize, the Austrian Lenau Prize, the Alfred Jurzykowski Prize, the Herder Prize, the Petrarch Prize, the Bruno Schulz Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize for the Freedom of the Individual in Society.Herbert was a coeditor of the poetry journal Poezja from 1965 to 1968 but resigned in protest of antisemitic policies. Rav Dov Ber was the foremost disciple of, and ultimate successor to, the founder of Chassidus, Rav Yisroel Ba'al Shem Tov. A brilliant child prodigy, he went to Lvov to learn under the great Pnei Yehoshua, while still a youngster. After the Ba'al Shem Tov's petirah, the authority of Rav Dov Ber was recognized by one and all. Among his illustrious talmidim were: the Rebbe Reb Shmuel Shmelke HaLevi Horowitz, and his brother, Reb Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, the Ba'al Hafla'ah; the Rebbe Reb Zushya and his brother, Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk; Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev; Rav Nachum of Chernobyl; and the Ba'al Hatanya, Rav Shneur Zalman of Liadi. I would like to share a wondrous illustration of the great brilliance of Rav Dov Ber, which he exhibited as a mere child. When Dov Ber was a young boy in Yeshiva, the Rebbi was teaching the talmidim the dispute between Rashi and Tosafos regarding the correct conduct for one who finds himself in the middle of his “silent shemoneh esrei” (עמידה), when the chazzan is reciting קדושה: Rashi (סוכה לח: ד״ה הוא אומר ברוך הבא) is of the opinion that he should stop davening and listen to the chazzan, and it will be considered as if he himself recited the words (שומע כעונה). Tosafos (ברכות כא: ד״ה עד) object to Rashi's statement, because if his listening is considered as though he himself actually said the words, that would constitute an interruption in his personal shemona esrei!! (״אדרבה - אי שומע כעונה, הוי הפסקה אם שותק!!״) Young Dov Ber proposed an ingenious answer to Tosafos' question: “Chazal teach us that when it comes to Mitzvos, Hashem considers a thought like it's an actual deed, but when it comes to Aveiros, He does not - ״מחשבה טובה הקב״ה מצרפה למעשה, וכו׳״ (See Kiddushin 40a). “So”, said little Dov Ber - “as regards the Mitzvah of saying Kedusha, it is considered as if he said the words, as that is a Mitzvah. This week I have been tantalizing my followers with the promise of a tall, dark, handsome singer who was born on January 1. I shall keep you in suspense no longer: he is the great Polish baritone Andrzej Hiolski, born in Lvov in New Year's Day 1922 and died in Krakow on 26 February 2000. I have known of Hiolski for years because of his association with the works of the late Krzysztof Penderecki, but I began digging deeper into his legacy a few years ago and was absolutely stunned at what I found: a singer with a near-perfect technique with a powerful voice with a slightly burred timbre characterized by both beauty, range, and subtlety of expression. I have been collecting his recordings for a few years now and have featured him at every possible opportunity on the podcast, including twice already in the current season. But this episode is devoted entirely to him and it may well serve, strange as it may seem for an artist who is so revered and treasured in his native country, as an introduction for many of my listeners to one of the great baritone voices of the twentieth century. The episode features recordings and performances, many of them exceedingly rare, ranging over more than 50 years, and includes music by Verdi, Wagner, Schubert, Mahler, Bach, Leoncavallo, Mozart, Tosti, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, and Giordano, but also a generous helping of music by Hiolski's compatriots, including Karol Szymanowski, Frédéric Chopin, Augustyn Bloch, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Stanisław Moniuszko, Tadeusz Baird, Tadeusz Szeligowski, as well as, of course, Penderecki. Nezisková organizace Post Bellum dokumentuje prostřednictvím projektu Paměť národa zapomenuté příběhy, a to nejen z bývalého Československa. Už v roce 2019 založila pobočku v ukrajinském Lvově. „Komunisté vždy s minulostí manipulovali. Studium historie používali k ideologickým záměrům. Teď máme poslední šanci mluvit s těmi, kteří se ve 20. století postavili proti totalitním režimům,” popisuje svou práci Mikuláš Kroupa, ředitel Post Bellum a vedoucí projektu Paměť národa.

Prague has had its fair share of characters throughout its storied history, yet Shlomo Yehuda Rapoport (1790-1867) or Shir as he was known was definitely one of the more interesting ones. Born into a rabbinic family in Lvov, Shir married the daughter of Rav Aryeh Leib Heller, the author of the Ketzos Hachoshen. Though he remained a scholarly, observant and rabbinic Jew for the remainder of his life, he also associated with the emerging Galician Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) of his era.  His intellectual pursuits included the study of medieval Jewish philosophy, languages, general science, history and literature, while his social circles included the famous maskilim of Galicia. In an attempt to alleviate his financial struggles his friend Yosef Perl arranged for his appointment to the rabbinate of Tarnopol. He shares Adam Zagajewski conjuring a life lost to his family (“To Go to Lvov”), Gerald Stern recognizing the fortunate circumstances of his domestic and writing lives (“Lucky Life”), and Li-Young Lee traversing his own psychic landscape (“I Loved You Before I Was Born”).
