The turn of the century was an interesting time to be alive. You had the doomsdayers who were convinced some bug called Y2K was going to wipe out the planet via technological genocide, and others who were convinced the world was going to come to a screeching halt at the stroke of midnight. For every theory was a counter theory, to the point where people were being driven to drink just to maintain some semblance of sanity.Into the world was born an anthemic tune that was just good enough to divert people's attention away from all of the fear and uncertainty in the world and allow us to refocus on the one thing that will never let us down.Music.So when three young upstarts from Adelaide started a sonic movement that bucked the growing tide of uncertainty, its wings spanned the entire world, with people as far away as Transylvania heard running through the streets and yelling four simple words that, when put together, became the voice of a generation. The voice your mother warned you about. The voice of change. I can still picture myself screaming above the live band in those times, shouting those same four words that have now become as much a part of music folklore as Iron Maiden and those that came before or after them. Those words?Turn That Shit Up. And the band responsible?Adelaide's Testeagles, that's who. After putting out just the one sensational metal/indie rock album laced with electronic beats and samples called Non Comprehendus, Testeagles vanished into the abyss. Job done. Order restored.Over the years, there have been many calls for Testeagles to return and finish what they had started, most of which fell on deaf ears until the band was coaxed out of retirement and onto the stage of last year's Froth & Fury Festival. The response was so overwhelmingly powerful and positive, it was only a matter of time before that one-off comeback became a fully fledged reunion, and the band did not disappoint, recently bowing to public demand by announcing a national tour in celebration of 25 years since the world collectively turned their shit up.Returning to our early days of musical indulgence, HEAVY sat down for an entertaining chat with Testeagles drummer "Ady" Matt to fill in the many blanks. We start by asking how rehearsals are going with the first show only weeks away."We played a show last year for the first time in like 20 years or something ridiculous, and that was a nightmare trying to get ready for," Ady laughed. "We had our doubts because we hadn't played properly for a really long time, but this time around we've kept it together ever since we did that one-off show. And we've been jamming. We built this really cool rehearsal space so we get to do this all day, every day, and it's got us really firing."With Testeagles having large electronic components to their music, we ask Ady how their live show has had to change in order to keep up with advances in the music industry."We weren't sure if we should just do exactly the same as what we used to, or if we should spice it up a little," he admitted. "We've ended up making a few changes - mainly due to all the different technology available - and it gives you all these ideas. We sat down and had a chat about it together, and thought about back in the day, and how it would sound now if we never stopped. We were always looking for the latest type of equipment and the latest tricks and things to do. I guess that's how we justify changing now, or thinking if we never got out of it, we would be completely different now to what we were then. So we've embraced some new technology, which is letting us do some extra things. I think it's a way better show now than we ever could have done back in the day, and it makes it probably more entertaining and interesting."In the full interview, Ady conveyed confidence in the band's preparations for the tour after a long hiatus, despite the challenges of relearning older songs and accommodating the health needs of their bass player, Dave. He reflected on the band's musical journey since their formation in 1994, noting their eclectic influences ranging from rock to electronic music. He recounted the unexpected success of their track Turn That Shit Up, which propelled Testeagles into the spotlight, while also revealing some initial doubts about their music's reception before it was released. As the tour approaches, Ady expressed a mix of excitement and anxiety about performing as the main act, emphasising the importance of nostalgia for fans by prioritising classic songs in the set list. The conversation also touched on the eclectic blending of genres at Testeagles disposal and how they get the balance right in the creative process, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersBursting onto the scene in 2005 with a rap/metal hybrid sound that had, by then, all but vanished from the scene, Hollywood Undead almost made it a personal mission to revive the sound.By the time they released their 2008 debut album Swan Songs that mission had already been conquered and Hollywood Undead have been waging - and winning - countless battles ever since. Fans flock to their shows, so-called respectable media outlets have stuck to them like bees to honey, and even the mainstream music market have embraced the Californian metal fusion outfit with their albums and singles charting through the roof. And, despite all of these obvious pre-cursors, Hollywood Undead have never come close to selling out. Not that they have ever needed to.After far too long between visits, Hollywood Undead are on their way back to Australia, forming part of a line-up that also includes Falling In Reverse and Black Veil Brides. It is a monster line-up that has already seen most of the tour sell out. But there are limited tickets left, and if you don't manage to get your hands on one, fear not, Hollywood Undead are also doing a couple of headlining sideshows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Johnny 3 Tears to find out what we can expect, pointing out the quality of the line-up."It's gonna be a lot of fun, man," he smiled. "We've done five or six tours with falling and we did a tour in a van with Black Veil 10, 20 years ago. I dunno, it's been a long time. We've also been on the same festivals. We all run in the same circles so you get to know each other over time. It's very incestural (laughs)."We ask Johnny to run through any changes with the band since their last visit here."It's been ten years since we've been there, and fifteen… 2011 was the last time we did a tour in Australia, so fourteen years," he recounted. "Then we did that festival there in 2015, that's how long it's been. A lot has changed…. well, nothing's changed and a lot has changed, I guess. We're still going, we're just a few more albums in deep, we're ten years older sadly. Closer to the grave, bro but still going strong. We're very much looking forward to coming back and hopefully it's not so long between this trip and the next one."In the full interview, Johnny reveals what we can expect from Hollywood Undead live, the dynamics between themselves, Falling In Reverse and Black Veil Brides, how their headline shows will differ, how they approach support slots in terms of set lists and playing to a crowd possibly not there for them, the early days of the band and where they fit in, the impact of their debut album Swan Songs and their thoughts on the album pre-release, how Hollywood Undead have changed musically from that album to now, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersHouse of Protection, the new venture from Stephen Harrison and Aric Improta, serves as a sanctuary for those who surrender to impulse. Abandoning any regard for tradition and form, they followed a feeling and unearthed a sound that sees them push their limits further than ever before. Bridging the not so disparate worlds of hardcore, electronica, and punk, the two forged a space for boundless creativity and a community fuelled by chaos. The band is a project created by formerly two-thirds of Fever 333 (Stephen & Aric), they're signed to Red Bull Records and backed & produced by legendary producer and ex-Bring Me The Horizon keyboardist Jordan Fish AND are featured on Architects upcoming album. House Of Protection are in Australia for the first time, supporting Bad Omens with Poppy across the nation, and HEAVY caught up with Stephen & Aric not long before their recent show at Brisbane's Riverstage."It's been awesome so far," Aric began. "Honestly, we didn't really know what to expect, especially walking up because Bad Omens audience looks very much like a Bad Omens audience (laughs). They are there for that band, but they have been really receptive. It's cool to be on such an eclectic tour because it doesn't feel competitive. It just feels like everybody's expressing themselves honestly, and that's always a cool situation to walk in to."In the full interview, we spoke about the tour and how it is going, the band's formation from the ashes of Fever 333, their musical direction, getting the mix of styles right in the creative process, their recent EP track by track, plans to come back to Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Many bands three decades into their career would be happy to tread the boards and play for the nostalgia, but not HED P.E. Their most recent and incredibly fifteenth album, Detox, was released in December 2023 and shows a band with no time to sit on their hands and muse about the past. Detox is a crushing return to the G-Punk sound that the band's fans know and adore.HEAVY sat down with frontman Jahred Gomes on the eve of the tour.Jahred described HED P.E's live performances as a journey that incorporates various musical styles, including hardcore, punk, reggae, and hip-hop, and reflected on the positive reception of the album and their recent UK tour. He emphasized the importance of creating new music and touring, despite industry challenges, and acknowledged the band's ability to connect with diverse audiences. A Musical Odyssey With DALE TANNER From OCEAN GROVE

Seldom does a band come along that can genuinely lay claim to being groundbreaking in terms of musical disparity. Sure, many are labelled as such, but how many have actually pushed their music to its limits and beyond and still emerged triumphant? Not many. While not claiming to be revolutionary themselves, Melbourne noise merchants Ocean Grove definitely qualify in terms of freedom of expression and mashing of genres that have no right being mentioned in the same breath, let alone side by side on an album release.Ever since unleashing their 2017 debut album The Rhapsody Tapes, Ocean Grove have effortlessly combined nu metal, metalcore, grunge, rock, punk and rap sensibilities in such an orderly fashion that scribes saw fit to label their music in a completely new category that best sums up each influence and musical note that forms the bands sound. That term is Odd World music and has stuck sufficiently for Ocean Grove to embrace the term themselves, to the point of naming their upcoming, November 22 album Oddworld. It is both a reflection of the band's eclectic sound and an ownership of the phrase, emphatically capturing Ocean Grove in all of their experimental glory. In short, ODDWORLD is exactly as its title suggests: beautifully chaotic, sonically kaleidoscopic and wholeheartedly one-of-a-kind.HEAVY sat down recently with frontman Dale Tanner to explore Oddworld on a deeper level."I'm feeling very, very excited," he enthused when asked how he felt about the impending release of album number four. "It's probably… this is the most excited about anything I've put out into the world, alongside my brothers. I sat down last night and gave the album a listen myself to get a refresh on things, and I thought this feels big and (is) a definitive moment in Ocean Grove's career, and I just want to soak that in a little bit after not having listened to it for a bit. I heard it a million times working on it in the studio and gave it that space to now revisit it and think 'holy fuck, this has some power to it'. I really think it's our best work. It's Ocean Grove operating on all cylinders and there's something there for everyone. It's taking all that was great about everything that we've done up to this point and fusing it with this new-found, child like excitement for the future. Just putting that stamp of this is certified Ocean Grove, and you'd better be here for it."In the full interview, Dale dives deeper into Oddworld musically, how they returned to their roots somewhat for the album, maintaining a flow and consistency despite covering so many genres, the creative process for Ocean Grove, choosing singles to represent Oddworld, finding the balance between styles, how their sound has evolved over the years, their upcoming run of shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris Peters*interview contains some language that may be offensive to some readers/listeners*Since bursting onto the scene in 2015, Melbourne noise machine Dregg have been a musical force unto themselves, throwing an eclectic mix of genres against the wall and making cherry pie with the resulting residue.Their music has always been ferocious, confronting, and, most importantly, different, with a fearless blend of elements of metal, hardcore, rap, and electronic music, crafting a sound that embodies their bold, no-rules attitude. But just when you thought it was safe to go back into the moshpit, Dregg return with a new lineup, increased energy and more metal in the form of new single Dog Cunts. It is a vicious, snarling slab of music that hints at the slightly newer direction Dregg will be taking with more upcoming music.New guitarist Zak Thom sat down with HEAVY to talk more, starting with the early response to the track that came out on May 17."(It's been) Great, actually," he enthused. "I honestly had no idea how it was going to go, because it's my first time being in a band that's had this much reach. So I'm fully just gauging off everything Chris (Mackertich, vocalist) says (laughs)."We ask if he attributes much of that positive response to the use of the suddenly popular C word in the title."Yeah, definitely," he laughed. "If you look at the comments that have been popping up, people are saying 'Dog Cunts, are these guys Aussie?' I feel like it's such a draw. Even when we sent it to our managers over in America, they loved it immediately. Just the fact it says Dog Cunts which is such an Aussie term."In the full interview, Zak talked more about the release of their new single Dog Cunts and the positive response it has received. He also talked about their upcoming album, which will feature heavier and more experimental elements, and their intention to explore diverse musical genres. He discussed the visual concept and storyline of the music video for Dog Cunts and the potential release date and the working title of the next album.Additionally, Zak introduced himself as one of the new band members and discussed Dregg's unique mix of music genres and their process of pushing boundaries in their music. He also talked about the band's upcoming show and how the addition of new members and a slightly more aggressive sound will alter the live performances.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane masters of noise New Clear Vision returned for our listening pleasure last year with a fresh line-up and renewed vigor.A mainstay on the music scene for a number of years, New Clear Vision took a break that many hoped would be fleeting, with frontman and all round nice guy Brad Bromfield promising there was more to come. And hasn't he delivered on his promise! When NCV returned to our stages last year expectation was high. This was a band whose live show borders on legendary, with a full nuclear wasteland type visual component offset by ferocious and scathing lyrics delivered with a rap/metal/nu-metal hybrid unlike anything to come out of the Australian music scene in perhaps forever. Now, with Daniel, Brodie and Zac on board, Bromfield has managed to elevate the legend that is NCV even more, delivering pulsating recent performances that has seen the band added to the whole upcoming Nu Metal Mayhem tour which features Anders Colsefni (Slipknot) and Wayland Reavis (Mushroomhead). But, before that, New Clear Vision are set to explode your senses with a crushing new single The New Rage, which will be premiered via HEAVY at midday, August 31.Bromfield sat down with HEAVY to take us further into the world of New Clear Vision.WARNING: PLACE EAR MUFFS ON CHILDREN BEFORE LISTENING"It's been nearly three years," he almost sighed when asked how long it has been since New Clear Vision have released new music. "It's very, very exciting. It's a better product - and that's no disrespect to anyone that's been there before - but we're finding the sound that I wanted 6, 7, 8 years ago."We ask Bromfield to delve deeper into the musical side of The New Rage."We were supposed to release it when we did the show at Caloundra earlier this year," he explained, "but thank fuck we didn't because we hadn't had it... there's now some samples at the start and some different shit there thast we've never done. I won't say too much about it, but it's hitting those nu-metal vibes that we're all about and always have been. Decisions were made just before we were gonna release it so we had a few things and different ideas. And, again, thank fuck we did because now it's a product of what we represent and what we always should have been."In the full interview, Brad talks more about the musicality of The New Rage, how they have changed the song from it's initial version, releasing it as audio first and why, the planned film clip and what it entails, how The New Rage kicks off a proposed trilogy of sorts, introduces us to the new members and what they bring to NCV, the upcoming run of shows as part of Nu Metal Mayhem, a new album and more.

Interview by Kris PetersWhile many bands of the rock to metal nature often collaborate with rap artists on individual songs or across whole albums, it is generally a one way street in that direction.Seldom does the music world come across a rap artist who integrates rock and metal through their music as par for the course but try telling Houstin innovator Hyro The Hero that and chances are he will greet that comment much the same way as he does everything else in life. With a warm smile and infectious laughter.Hyro has faced all kinds of doubts, knockers and ignorance since releasing his debut mixtape Gangsta Rock on Christmas Eve in 2007.But even then the future seeds of amalgamation were gathering momentum, manifesting themselves to great effect on his 2011 debut album Birth, School, Work, Death which included tracks produced by Ross Robinson featuring Paul Hinojos (At the Drive-in, the Mars Volta, Sparta) on bass, Daniel Anderson (Idiot Pilot, Glowbug) on guitar, and the Blood Brothers alumni Cody Votolato also on guitar, and Mark Gajadhar on drums.Fast forward just over a decade and Hyro The Hero is about to release his latest album Bound For Glory on September 15 which outlines his long journey to achieving success and some of the many obstacles he has endured.Including guest appearances from David Draiman (Disturbed), Brandon Saller (Atreyu), Spencer Charnas and Dan Sugarman (Ice Nine Kills), Chad Gray (Hellyeah), AJ Channer (Fire From The Gods), REDDSTAR and Markus Videsäter (Solence), Bound For Glory is much more than another rap/metal crossover attempt at unification or target audiences. It is a statement of intent from a man who knows only those musical barriers he sets for himself.HEAVY sat down for an interesting chat with Hyro The Hero earlier this week."I'm excited man," he beamed. "I can't wait to put it out there to the world and have everybody take it in and put their thoughts in. I love it man. It's a great feeling making some music and having it put out to the world."We follow up by asking Hyro to explain in more detail what he was going for musically with the album."Basically it's my career, my life on the road," he quipped. "That's why I say Bound For Glory because you know, you take those steps and you know and you feel it in your heart I'm bound to get to this successful spot that I feel in my head. I'm gonna take those steps and work hard and get there. I just want the listener to come in and let them know I'm on the same path as you, let's just go up this road together to get somewhere we wanna be."In the full interview, Hyro speaks more about what drove him to make Bound For Glory, the guest artists and what they brought to the table, getting to record with some of his peers, covering Busta Rhymes and why that was so important to him, mixing rap and metal and why it works, future plans and more.

Interview by Kris PetersPrequels and such talk are usually reserved for the film industry. The blockbuster before the blockbuster, if you will, but in all honesty has it ever really worked?I could drag out a myriad of examples and create all sorts of conjecture here, but at the end of the day you have to admit it is not a word commonly used in the music industry. But then again From Ashes To New are not your run of the mill common band.Since breaking through with their debut album Day One in 2016, the US rock outfit has gone on to amass four Top 10 singles, over 600 million all-time streams and more than 75 million video views to date. So when they announce their intent to make a prequel to an already successful concept album then who cares to stop and argue the semantics of contrasting industries? From Ashes To New are far from a safe band.By weaving hard rock, hip hop, electronic and alternative music into a tapestry of sonic enlightenment FATN have set themselves distinctly apart from an ever clustering swarm of by-the-numbers rock outfits that class experimentation as deciding on which degree of seperation they are feeling on any given day.And so enters the fray an album titled Blackout which acts as a conceptual prequel to Day One, encapsulating the trivialities and nuances of a pre-apocalyptic world that was glimpsed through realistic eyes during the 2020 pandemic during which the album was written. With the release date of July 28 looming, HEAVY sat down with vocalist Danny Case to venture down the rabbit hole that has consumed his thoughts during the making of Blackout."We've been comparing it a lot...," he measured, "...it's a quote, unquote prequel to our debut album Day One. When we were writing the record it was early 2021 when the lockdowns were just starting to end - for us at least - and touring still hadn't come back but we were writing. It was in your face every day. One of the first songs we worked on was Armageddon because it seemed like every day was the end of the world. That was the song that came about early on and we were like, hey, we have our very first record day One. The art on it has a kid on a planet looking back on the old planet as it is falling apart. So why don't we take this record and make it where the kid is on that old planet before he leaves for the new planet. Another thing we were trying to do was capture the same kind of heaviness that the first album had. We wanted to take a step back and look at what do we really wanna do? What do the fans really want from this band? And we found that we really enjoy writing heavy music and that was what put this band on the map. It also tied in with the music we were making in that it was kind of like an apocalyptic record almost."In the full interview Danny talks more about the musical side of the album, writing to a concept, the singles released and how they represent the album, the concept in greater detail, how FATN has changed since he joined the band, the different styles that make up their music and how they successfully integrate them together, future plans and more.

However, we also introduce you to a band that defies all the negative stereotypes and stands out as a true gem in the genre. Whether you're a fan of rap metal or not, this episode will introduce you to a band that deserves your attention.I'll detail exactly what's holding back rap metal from being great through a thorough analysis of the music, lyrics, and performances. I also acknowledge that music is subjective, and what doesn't work for me may work for others. Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne based outfit Liar are an amalgamation of many styles of music, drawing from hardcore, emo rap, hip hop and metal but to categorise their music in any form at all would be an injustice to the band. After showcasing the many sides of their musical personality starting with their debut single Decline and working through Hysteria, Poison and Double Cup, Liar have intensified things even more with their latest single Mania.Created with the intention of expressing the pain of living with a depressed, suicidal internal monologue and how it affects one's relationships with those around them, Mania expands their musical surroundings to a staggering level, punctuated by the arrival of new vocalist Dylan.HEAVY sat down with bass player Con Davis, guitarist Mitch Rice and drummer Adam Spackman to find out more."The song Mania instrumentally is kind of a song where we tried to push the limits on a guitar and all sorts of crazy sounds and stuff that you'll hear," Davis explained. "Vocally, it's a song that I helped write based on past experiences and hoping to touch a few people that have had similar experiences."As mentioned, Mania musically draws from many different realms of the musical spectrum, which the band admits is a feature of their sound."The sound is predominantly a fusion of trap metal stuff," Rice offered, "but we have a lot of weird synth and electronic elements in there.""A lot of stuff has already been done," Spackman added, "so it's a matter of trying to do something new to stand out. I guess the other way to do that is to try combining different ideas."In the full interview, Liar go further into the lyrical component of Mania, the music video and what story it tells, showcasing their sound over multiple singles, new vocalist Dylan and what he brings to the bands sound, refining their sound as they grow as a band, upcoming shows and more.

We talk about Punk influence in hard rock and metal with Danzig, Paul Dianno and Suicidal Tendencies. We then dive into the rise of Rap Metal and talk about Anthrax, Aerosmith & Run DMC, and Ice-T.
