Tonetta is the stage name used by a reclusive singer-songwriter and visual artist who since the early 1980s has been recording and sharing his original music and videos (originally on VHS and cassette). In 2008, he became an international cult celebrity after starting his first YouTube channel containing music and video that often contain explicit sexual content and a unique do it yourself aesthetic. Tonetta’s detractors call his music vile filth whereas fans call it the work of a pure outsider artist. In this episode of Nighttime, I’m joined by my good friend and band mate Aaron Corbett for a discussion surrounding an artist unlike any you've ever heard of. The Importance of Nevada Day for African Americans Nevada Day commemorates the admission of the state of Nevada into the union on October 31 1864. Some of you may ask why this should be any more important to African Americans than any other state. Fair question and that is why I am doing the show…J. Nevada played an important role in ensuring victory for the North and the end of Slavery for Africans in America. Nevada Day gives us a moment to reflect on that freedom and the role that Nevada played. Nevada has become an important state politically. Often it is seen as a bellwether for the rest of the country. Nevada also has the largest African American population per capita West of Texas. There are opportunities in Nevada that are not prevalent in other states for all and specifically for African Americans If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call (347) 826-9600. Welcome to Our Own Voices Live with your host: Rodney Smith. Our Topic(s) today: “Community Leadership” If you have a question, comment or just want to listen, give us a call (347) 826-9600. Press 1 to speak Community Leadership Community leadership is a specific form of the general concept of leadership. It is frequently based in place and so is local, although it can also represent a community of common interest, purpose or practice. It can be individual or group leadership, voluntary or paid. In many localities it is provided by a combination of local volunteers, business and government and is best served by what is called "place management", ie. a combination within a region of Government resources, professional and business skills and the energies of the local community [Sorenson & Epps, 1996:115-117; Osborne & Gaebler, 1993] A community leader is someone who is perceived to represent the community’s interests and plays the role of protecting them. This role could be paid for or voluntarily, most communities have held this role as a voluntary one. Community leaders have a vast range of roles that range from mobilizing communities for a common cause to designing courses of action to overcome common challenges. Physically he is no longer with us but he will still be seen through us.” Mr. Sam Smith, who many called just Sam, is the man who started the Gathering. He was the only Black book store owner in the state for a while. He got more Black people on fire department than any other locally. He is the man I admired more than any other I met. This in no way is all that Mr. Smith accomplished during his time with us but merely a snapshot. We affectionately referred to him as, The Mayor of the Bistro and the Oracle of Las Vegas. When I think of things I have done inspired by him and what wouldn’t have happened in my life had he not been in it, I see such a void. My life is fuller because of him and the community has been enriched by him through me. He said, “we should always be excellent.” When I am in the community my goal was to be excellent so they could see his excellence in me. It was a way to show a living respect to him and also for his approval. I admired him and wanted his approval probably more than any other man I have known. A very close military buddy asked, “Who is Sam Smith?” I simply said, “He was the man I would have wanted to call me son.” Our Own Voices Live is a radio show featuring people and stories from our community in Las Vegas, the surrounding area and some place near you. Civil Rights Act and Independence Day The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Pub.L. 88–352, 78 Stat. 241, enacted July 2, 1964) is a landmark civil rights and US labor law in the United States that outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It prohibited unequal application of voter registration requirements, racial segregation in schools, employment, and public accommodations. Powers given to enforce the act were initially weak, but were supplemented during later years. Congress asserted its authority to legislate under several different parts of the United States Constitution, principally its power to regulate interstate commerce under Article One (section 8), its duty to guarantee all citizens equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment and its duty to protect voting rights under the Fifteenth Amendment. The Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964, at the White House.
