Episode 134: Tidbits & Trolls Join us for a conversation about new poems by Kelly Egan and a discussion about line breaks, image systems, and the surprise turns poems make. Keep your eyes and ears open, Slushies, the landscape is full of lore. Egan has us pondering possibilities. Once upon a time folks believed in Selkies, shapeshifting seals who make folks fall in love with them in their human form. Who knew it's bad luck to open the door on Christmas Eve for fear trolls will maraud your house? You've been warned. Check out Danish artist Thomas Dambo's mammoth sculpted trolls hidden in plain sight. And if you want to deep dive into another legendary landscape – aka a brick-and-mortar bookstore – be sure to check out Parker Posey's documentary The Booksellers. At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Samantha Neugebauer, Dagne Forrest, Lisa Zerkle, Divina Boko, Jess Fielo (sound engineer) Kelly Egan writes from dream, reverie, and long drives. She is the author of two chapbooks—Millennial, from White Stag, and A Series of Septembers, from Dancing Girl Press. Her poems can also be found in Maiden Magazine, Interim, Colorado Review, Laurel Review, RHINO, Denver Quarterly, and elsewhere. Kelly has an MFA from Saint Mary's College of CA and has participated in writing residencies in Iceland and the Peruvian Amazon. She lives in California's Bay Area. Find her at kellyjeanegan.com.
Ezra Pound had his own complicated relationship with fame, exercising a profound influence upon 20th-century literature but being tried for treason in the U.S. after broadcasting propaganda for the fascists during WWII. Today's poem is a guarded reflection on the never-ending quest. Happy reading. Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe
Human relationships with deer stretch back thousands of years. Archaeologists uncovered red deer skulls at Star Carr in Yorkshire which are 11,000 years old. No one knows what they were used for, if they had practical applications or were used in shamanic rituals. But it suggests some kind of relationship between humans and deer, even if we're not sure what that involved. Deer appear in mythology all over the world, although this post will focus on the British Isles. From shapeshifting deer to fairy cattle, deer cults to white stag legends, let's explore the appearance of the deer in British and Irish folklore and legend in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! The sound of music spilled out of the pub. The White Stag in Monkton was rammed for a Monday. It was karaoke night that attracted the crowd of around 100 people who were finishing off the long Easter weekend with a few drinks and a singalong. Mark McGurk was home a few doors down from the pub when he heard what sounded like an engine backfiring on the street. He got up to look out the window. Mark saw an eye-catching American-style car speeding away, so he decided to go outside to see what the commotion was about. The noise from the White Stag wasn't loud enough to drown out the hysterical cries of a woman, which sounded like they were coming from the house next door. Mark could hear her screaming, “It's a gun! It's a gun!”... *** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Eileen Macfarlane.Edited by Joel Porter at Dot Dot Dot Productions.Script editing, additional writing, illustrations and production direction by Rosanna FittonNarration, audio editing assistance, script editing, and production direction by Benjamin Fitton.Become a ‘Patreon Producer' and get exclusive access to Season 1, early ad-free access to episodes, and your name in the podcast credits. Fall classes have started at the University of Oregon in Eugene with a new president at the helm: Karl Scholz, an internally respected economist who came most recently from University of Wisconsin-Madison where he served as provost. Meanwhile the university is getting ready to consolidate its Portland presence at a new Northeast campus, the former Concordia University. The property that was purchased in 2022 will house the university’s new Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health. UO also plans to move graduate programs currently housed at the White Stag building in the city’s Old Town neighborhood and is putting that building up for sale. We sit down with Scholz in our Portland studios to hear more about the Ballmer Institute, the university’s footprint in the city and how he’s thinking about the rising costs of higher education, both as an economist and a university president.

Nicola Lei Ravello is the Founder of White Stag Investing and the author of stories in #water, #sustainability, and #investing. White Stag Investing is a research platform for responsible investments, focusing on sustainability as a source of value and stability in the long term. Water could be anecdotal in an investment strategy. After all, as a sector, it weights less than 1% of the World's GDP. So, at first sight, it sounds like a topic for the most convinced impact investors. Yet, on the second look, water is on the critical path for many other sectors. Indeed, which industry can boast of being able to run without water? Which building can deem to be entirely safe from any flooding or extreme climate event? And that still totally skips all the sectors that rely on water's quality for their finished good. All of a sudden, water becomes much less anecdotal: it rather becomes a direct and indirect economic risk. And this turns it, as a matter of fact, into an interesting field to investigate, for investors, analysts, and asset managers. Now, if we look at the other side of the coin, there's a great opportunity for the water industry to understand the implications of that economic story. That's what differentiates between water and wastewater treatment being as a cost to be in business and the same players being solution providers that secure a sector's future. Shall we explore it? Well, while you buckle up, let me remind you that if you like what you hear, you can help me up tremendously by sharing that content around you. Please tell your friends, colleagues, or LinkedIn network what you learned of found inspiring in what Nicola shares today, and if you don't like what you hear, please reach out to me and tell me what I should be doing differently or better. Come on, do it, and I'll meet you on the other side.
Welcome back to The Logosians Podcast! This is the 4th and final part of our discussion of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series. Its been a fun ride, and we can't wait to continue with more Narnia episodes in the future. The Lion and the Ring series episode 10 covers everything from the Pevensies meeting Aslan at his camp, to Peter's first kill, the Stone Table, the Deep Magic, and the defeat of the White Witch. We cover Aslan's death and resurrection at the Stone Table, and the significance of Lewis' views on the atonement. The book concludes with the coronation of Peter the Magnificent, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just, and Lucy the Valiant at Cair Paravel, and then the hunting of the White Stag resulting in the Pevensies returning through the Wardrobe to England. Along the way we go down the rabbit hole on duty, honor, courage, and what it means to be a man. This leads us to a discussion on the terrible lack of competent and capable men, particularly husbands and fathers, in television and media today, particularly shows aimed at children. The Logosians Podcast is made up of a fellowship of good friends and is centered around Faith, Freedom, Fatherhood, and Fantasy. Join us on our quest through the entire legendarium of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and more! Featured in today's episode are Joshua Jolly, Dillon Alexander, Charlie Bates, Derek Johnson, and Tim Ellen. Audio edited by Nick Coltharp. On June 28th of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in broad daylight, shot in the rear seat of the one of a kind Gräf and Stift Double Phaeton loaned to him by his friend Franz Von Harrach. Ferdinand's death that day would spark the fire of first World War, but it wasn't the last victim the Phaeton would claim. In fact, over the following years, the cursed car would go on to claim over a dozen lives, leaving very few survivors, and even fewer entirely unscathed. Tune in today as we explore the wrap sheet of the deadliest cursed car we've covered yet in the story of the White Stag Curse.
In part thirteen of this series, I read "Pele", "Hang Tuah", "Druids and the White Stag", & "Enkidu and Gilgamesh" from the book Beneath the Moon by Yoshi Yoshitani (no pronouns). Beneath the Moon is a collection of fairy tales, myths, and divine stories from around the world that Yoshi has also represented in Yoshi's tarot deck Tarot of the Divine. As I read each story I will connect them to the tarot card they represent. I love the Tarot of the Divine deck and all the culture it shows and I immediately wanted the book the moment I knew it existed. Hopefully, you enjoy hearing these stories as much as I love reading them! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/spiritualintellect/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/spiritualintellect/support

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis - Chapter 17
Here is FIRST PART OF the final chapter of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis. Chapter 17 - "The Hunting of the White Stag"
In this one, we do a lot of stuff. A LOT of stuff. Does most of it matter? Let's find out, in the ULTIMATE chapter of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe..;
In the final chapter of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the great battle against the forces of darkness is finally won, and the Pevensie children at last assume the four thrones at Cair Paravel that have awaited them. The prophecy is fulfilled, and all is well again in Narnia. Yet, as King Peter, Queen Susan, King Edmund, and Queen Lucy rule justly and nobly over the restored land, they discover the White Stag has appeared, a magical creature with the power to grant wished to the one who catches it.
The Pine Barrens of New Jersey hold a lot of secrets you can get lost in. But if you do happen to get lost, there may be a way out, but you would need some help from a ghostly source.

This week we have a special show with 3 very special guest. We have Phil and Venice Rembold owners of Imagine Laser Works and Sheryl Kena Freedom (Robinson) who is a certified laser technician and a very dear friend of mine. Laser Acupuncture is mainly used to quit smoking with a 90 percent success rate, however it is used to quit other addictions, ailments, increase blood circulation and overall wellness. In this episode we talk about the ins and outs of that as well as some of the other services offered. It is an interesting episode about holistic healing, metaphysical healing, ancient healing and technological advances and the marriage of these things in western medicine. I also want to note that there is a music bed under the conversation this week and the music is from Katsuk's latest recording which is a guided meditation. However we play just the instrumental version. Its a cool CD and you should check it out. Back to the show. **Zach Notes** First song- Waiting on the Fame by Summerjob (feat. The Lamp-post Listener: Chronicling C.S. Lewis' World of Narnia
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe concludes. "For Mr. Beaver had warned them, 'He'll be coming and going,' he had said. 'One day you'll see him and another you won't. He doesn't like being tied down—and of course he has other countries to attend to. It's quite all right. He'll often drop in. Only you mustn't press him. He's wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.'" Stay tuned for a Listener Feedback segment at the end of the episode. Thanks to Robert, Carrie, Eva, and Amanda for reaching out! We will return to Narnia with Prince Caspian on January 9th! Host Ben Rice travels to Old Town Brewing (Portland, OR) to sit down with their social media manager Jordan Wilson and Portland-area comedian Alex Falcone. We talk about Old Town's recent victory over the City of Portland in a trademark dispute over their White Stag logo and the events that led to the suit. We also chat about why beer tap lists might change during the winter months, adult abductions, haunted breweries, and the three commonalities between Ben, Jordan, and Alex. Plus we talk about Alex's appearances, plural, on esteemed sketch show Portlandia and his work with the Portland Trailblazers and the Portland Mercury News. We also discuss casino comedy nightmares, Ben's day job, and how to make breweries and restaurants more vegetarian-friendly. And what podcast with three chubby white dudes with glasses would be complete without discussing our sad celebrity lookalikes? All this and more, on episode 68 of Barley & Me. Enjoy!
