One nonviolent way to show one's displeasure/disgust/disagreement is to protest. In a letter to the editor, written in a blog, by contacting your lawmakers, taking it to the streets and there are many other ways. Pete Seeger was known for his songs protesting mistreatment of workers and war itself, and over time there has been a great abundance of songs and actions of protest. Marvin Gaye, CCR, Nina Simone, Dylan, Lennon and many others wrote and performed their protest songs from What's Goin' on?, Blowin' in the Wind to Fortunate Son, Give Peace a chance and Strange Fruit. In the future you'll hear an episode of Tales Vinyl Tells dedicated to protest songs. Please send your ideas to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com and yours may well be included. And when you email me, please be sure to let me know who and where you are. I mention protest songs because we kick off with a real kicker from Quicksilver Messenger Service and include Petty, Joni, Cheech, Chong, Nick and more. Thanks for listening. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. The program can also be played and downloaded anytime at podbean.com, Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, iHeart podcasts, Player FM podcasts, Listen Notes podcasts and many other podcast places. And of course you can count on hearing the Tales on studiomillswellness.com/tales-vinyl-tells anytime. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Richard Marx. ABOUT RICHARD MARX:Grammy-winning performer Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums as an artist, but if you only know him from late 1980s ballads such as “Hold on to the Nights” and “Right Here Waiting,” you only know part of the story. A prolific songwriter, Marx has landed fourteen songs at the top of various Billboard charts, and has written a #1 single in each of the last four decades. His genre-crossing songwriting success includes “What About Me” and “Crazy,” which Kenny Rogers carried to the top of the Adult Contemporary and Country charts, respectively; “Edge of a Broken Heart,” a hit for the female metal band Vixen; “This I Promise You,” a Top 5 pop single for NSYNC that stayed at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart for 13 weeks; Josh Groban's debut single “To Where You Are,” which also reached #1; and “Dance With My Father,” which Richard wrote with the song's performer, Luther Vandross, and which earned the pair the prestigious Grammy Song of the Year award in 2004. Additionally, Richard has scored three major hits with Keith Urban: the Top 5 “Everybody,” and the #1 singles “Better Life” and “Long Hot Summer.” Despite all his songwriting success, however, Marx is best known as a singer and performer who today jokes about his 80s hairstyle and of-the-era drum sounds. But the songs are undeniable, all of which Marx wrote and produced himself. His debut self-titled album yielded four Top 5 singles: “Don't Mean Nothing,” “Should've Known Better,” “Endless Summer Nights,” and “Hold on to the Nights.” His follow-up, 1989's Repeat Offender, was even more successful, going quadruple-platinum and earning two number one Billboard pop singles, “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting,” in addition to the Top 5 “Angelina.” More hits followed, including “Keep Coming Back,” “Hazard,” “Take This Heart,” “Now and Forever,” and “Until I Find You Again.” In addition, Richard's songs have been integral to a number of successful film soundtracks. He earned a Grammy nomination for his contributions to St. Elmo's Fire; scored a Top 10 pop hit with “Surrender to Me,” which Ann Wilson of Heart and Robin Zander of Cheap Trick recorded for the movie Tequila Sunrise, and wrote “At the Beginning,” a hit duet for the film Anastasia that Richard performed with Donna Lewis. Over the course of his career, Richard's songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, The Tubes, Sarah Brightman, Monica, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Paulina Rubio, Emerson Drive, Chicago, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vince Gill, Kenny Loggins, LeAnn Rimes, Celine Dion, Julio Iglesias, Berry Manilow, Daughtry, Vertical Horizon, Lifehouse, Dave Koz, Jennifer Nettles, Ringo Starr, and many others. His memoir, Stories to Tell, is available from Simon & Shuster. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A new online menstrual health resource is being launched today to address the gap in adolescents' knowledge about menstruation and common conditions like endometriosis. More than 27 percent of young women miss school each month due to severe period pain, and more than 70 percent of under 24 year olds have bad periods. Endometriosis affects one in nine women and girls, but most experience lengthy delays, an average of 8.7 years, to get a diagnosis. The online platform called What About Me? has been developed by Deborah Bush, who founded Endometriosis New Zealand. It builds on a menstrual health and endometriosis programme which ran in schools from 1998 to 2019, and was a world first at the time. Deborah Bush is the director of What About Me? and has spent the last two years focused on getting her resource to reach a wider audience, by going online.

During this episode I have an opportunity to talk with Laura Schreiner, another AANE certified therapist. Laura is also in a neurodiverse relationship and when her and her spouse discovered he was on the spectrum, she began to ask herself "What About Me?" That question led her to create a support group called "What About Me? (WAM) for neurotypical partners. The group has been meeting for about two years and Laura shares a little bit about the work she is doing with the group. In addition, Laura shares some of the answers she came up with as she began understanding so much more about her own marriage. She also talks in-depth about how she helps neurodiverse couples gain a better understanding of whether they are in each other's universe, galaxy or solar system and how they can visit each other's planet and communicate well when they come from different planets. Astronomy is a shared interest between her and her husband and that helped guide her to create this assessment process. Laura also addresses many other important issues including: The Communication Roundabout. Conversational intimacy. The importance of repair. What is "burden"? How each partner may be different inside and outside of their love relationship. Understanding and being aware of where you are in you relationship. The importance of relaxing your nervous system. How can both partners get their needs met? Stay present in the moment. Don't focus on the past before you knew you were neurologically different. Creating a system to address executive function challenges. What's Up Royals?"Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord." Psalms 27:14This scripture is easier read than lived. No matter if we are waiting on a call or a hamburger. A verdict or a miracle. Waiting is difficult. Especially when you don't have anything to do to fill the time. Particularly when you are watching others around you get their food, their answers their miracle. You want to scream, "WHAT ABOUT ME?!". In this two-part series I dive into waiting with my good friends Antwan and DeeDee Gilbert as they recall a very long season of waiting and what they learned along the way. Stay connected via email at dearkingpodcast@gmail.com, on Instagram @dearkingpodcast and on the website www.dearkingonline.com.
