What if you could control what happens in your dreams? Turns out you can by doing something called lucid dreaming. Science journalist Alice Robb digs into the phenomenon in her book Why We Dream. The book discusses the ways ancient Greeks and modern research alike have tried to explain the purpose behind dreams, as well as why we should even pay attention to them. On the pod, Alice talks about her journey to becoming an experienced lucid dreamer and gives tips on how you can also control your dreamstate. We get into what modern research and academics are doing to understand dreams and lucid dreaming, and how the existence of new practices like dream retreats and dream groups are helping people form meaning from their unconscious. Plus, we talk about why we all seem to have those weird dreams about losing our teeth and failing an exam, and what they even mean in the first place.
In Episode 8, Jeff and Mel attempt to explain why humans sleep and what the purpose of dreaming is. They also talk to dream coach Cordell Jacks about healing trauma through your dreams. Dreams are not just something we put up with when we sleep. You can control them. Learning to control them can help you navigate problems in your waking life. I am currently reading Why We Dream by Alice Robb which really got me thinking of how I can be more effective in my day to day life. Monitoring sleep and learning to control my dreams may be the answer. Everyone has different strategies to planning, some prefer to plan more, some prefer less but there is a state of overplanning. Sometimes when we get extremely passionate about something we also get nervous of messing things up which can cause overplanning. Keep an eye on how much you plan, and put in the action to balance out planning vs action. What is your vision of success? Success is defined by you, it may be found in relationships, career, legacy or something else. Only you can define it. So what's your definition of success? Time management is difficult. Especially when you're working full time and also trrying to build a company. And sometimes there needs to be a clear boundary between the two. Reason being, sometimes the company you're building can leak into your full time job. That means you stop meeting the expections of the company you work full time at. It's a balance game, one that I am still working on. Don't forget to leave a review/comment. Ep. 505 | Original Air Date February 26, 2019 Poets, rock stars, authors—and even we mere mortals—all share a nightly sojourn—a temporary stay–in the land of dreams. Alice Robb argues they are not just flights of fancy, but critical to health and happiness in our waking hours too. Robb is a science writer whose work has been published in The New Republic where she was a staff writer, The New York Times, The BBC, The Atlantic, among others. She graduated from Oxford with a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology. Her book, Why We Dream, published in November of 2018, is described by Houghton Mifflin: “Robb draws on fresh and forgotten research, as well as her experience and that of other dream experts, to show why dreams are vital to our emotional and physical health. She explains how we can remember our dreams better—and why we should. She traces the intricate links between dreaming and creativity, and even offers advice on how we can relish the intense adventure of lucid dreaming for ourselves.”
Alice's new book, Why We Dream ... All the wrong ways we used to think about dreams ... The unusual discovery of REM sleep ... When scientists thought dreams were a paranormal gateway ... Alice describes participating in a "dream group" ... What do events in dreams really mean? ... Why do we have nightmares? ... How to get started with lucid dreaming ...
