CONDUCT is both an expression of our integrity with the View of the Buddha Shakyamuni's teachings cultivated through meditation, and a potent influence on our experience, our world, and our spiritual development. In the third of three episodes on view, meditation, and conduct, Lamas Yeshe and Zopa explore what conduct is generally and in the context of this triad, as well as how the three elementsrelate dynamically to one another, and cohesively to other paradigms of the Buddha's teachings.Full lyrics and audio with melody for the Milarepa song "Profound Definitive Meaning Sung on the Snowy Range," translated into English and arranged for song by Jim Scott and Ari Goldfield, which is used for the contemplation segment of this episode, is available at:https://ktgrinpoche.org/songs/profound-definitive-meaning-sung-snowy-rangeThis episode was recorded at Pullahari Monastery in Nepal--can you catch the songbirds, aircraft, and dogs that are part of our daily soundtrack here?Make a dana offeringPRAJNA FIRE is a United States 501(c)(3) nonprofit religious organization. Attachment is like a rope that binds us—tying our happiness to people, possessions, and circumstances. In Buddhism, attachment isn't just about clinging to things we love; it's the grasping, craving, and fear of loss that keep us trapped in cycles of dissatisfaction. The tighter we hold on, the more suffering we create. But don't worry—there are antidotes to this challenging habit of attachment! In this episode, we'll uncover practical tools from the Buddhist path to help us shift from attachment to true freedom. How can we love without clinging? Enjoy without suffering? These antidotes aren't just abstract teachings; they're actionable, life-changing practices that can transform our everyday experiences. Him I call a brahmana, who, in this world, has given up sensual pleasures, and leaving the home-life has become a bhikkhu; who has eradicated sensual desires and has come to the end of existence. --Buddha, The Dhammapada, Verse 415 References and Links Buddha (1986).The Dhammapada: Verses and Stories. Trechos do livro “The Peaceful Stillness of the Silent Mind”, de Lama Yeshe.

VIEW takes primary place in the Buddha Shakyamuni's path of spiritual practice. It encompasses the perspective, the belief systems, the worldview that knows who things are as we find them, and leads onward to liberation from samsara and buddhahood, the perfect and complete embodiment of our mind's true nature. Lamas Yeshe and Zopa explore what view is, how it helps us navigate our lives with skill and grace, and lay the groundwork for exploring two important related elements, Meditation and Conduct. A reading for meditation taken from the text, 'The Peaceful Stillness of the Silent Mind: Buddhism, Mind and Meditation' by Lama Thubten Yeshe. Lama Thubten Yeshe was born in Tibet in 1935. At the age of six, he entered Sera Monastic University in Tibet where he studied until 1959, when as Lama Yeshe himself has said, “In that year the Chinese kindly told us that it was time to leave Tibet and meet the outside world.” Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, together as teacher and disciple since their exile in India, met their first Western students in 1967. By 1971, they settled at Kopan, a small hamlet near Kathmandu in Nepal. In 1974, the Lamas began touring and teaching in the West, which would eventually result in The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition. Lama Yeshe followed the Gelug tradition, and was considered unconventional in his teaching style. He died in 1984.

Exploring the mind in Mahamudra practice brings us increased intimacy with its qualities. Lamas Yeshe & Zopa describe the nonconceptual character of mind, and its empty essence, as well as our thought, feeling, sensory and other experiences. Contemplate quotes about mind's nonconceptuality and follow a guided meditation to connect with raw sense impressions free of conceptual overlays. PRAJNA SPARKS follows the lunar calendar. Lamas Yeshe and Zopa invite everyone into the loveliness of celebrating the Buddha Shakyamuni throughout the year in the practice of du chen - grand times, festivals, or quite simply, holidays at four points in the Tibetan calendar. The Lamp Prayer recited during the meditation portion of this episode is available here including Tibetan pronunciation and English text. https://www.prajnafire.com/sparks-songs This is the English text for ease of reference: May the bowl of this lamp become equal to the outer ring of this world realm of the great Three Thousands. May its stem be the size of the King of Mountains, Mt. Meru. May its oil fill the surrounding oceans. In number, may a hundred million appear before each and every buddha. May its light dispel all the darkness of ignorance from the Peak of Existence to the Incessant Hell and illumine all the Pure Realms of the buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions so they are clearly seen. OM VAJRA ALOKE AH HU¥ Emaho! I offer this amazing, wonderful, bright lamp To the one thousand buddhas of this fortunate aeon The lamas, yidams, dakinis, dharma protectors, And gatherings of deities in the mandalas Of all pure realms of the infinite ten directions. My parents in the fore, may every sentient being In this lifetime and all the places they take birth See the pure realms of the perfect Buddhas directly And then become inseparable from Amitabha. Out of the power of the truth of the Three Jewels And the deities of the Three Roots I've made this prayer. Please grant your blessings that it be quickly accomplished. Episode #158: Following a family tragedy when she was just a teenager, Ayya Yeshe set off on a spiritual journey, becoming a nun in a Tibetan lineage at just 23. However, she soon learned that female renunciates weren't treated with the same respect as males, and left to train under Bhante Sujato in the Ajahn Chah tradition, before taking Bhikkhuni ordination in 2006 at Thich Nhat Hanh's Plum Village.“Engaged Buddhism is the way I practiced going forward,” she says. “A monastery in Asia is more than just a place where you go and sit alone and find liberation from the world, separate from the world…[it] is a community,” she explains, adding that in the West, “we are disconnected from community… from the planet.” While Ayya Yeshe also values the need for periodic seclusion, she feels that Westerner practitioners overemphasize this, overlooking the traditional Buddhist value of communal practice. She is also not afraid to call out Western yogis who remain disengaged, indifferent or apathetic in the face of injustice. She points to the danger of spiritual bypass, and encourages meditators to examine when they are passively benefiting from systems of oppression.Ayya Yeshe is a strong feminist because of her experiences as a nun, being treated as a second class citizen just because she was a woman, that simply her gender was “bad karma.” But she knew that the Buddha taught that women had every potential of awakening as did men. So “it was by necessity that I became a socially Engaged Buddhist, because I literally had nowhere to live as a nun!”She joined forces with Bhikkhuni Vimala soon after the military coup, encouraging Buddhist monastics around the world to photograph themselves with their alms bowl upside down as a sign of solidarity with the resistance movement. She understands that the military atrocities need to be resisted in some form. However, she notes the importance of deferring to those actively engaged on the ground, and doing more listening than leading.

The word enlightenment is a translation of two Pali words that mean “awakened” and “freed from all fetters.” To become enlightened then means we wake to the true nature of reality, and we free our mind from all the shackles of the delusions, like ignorance, anger, and attachment. The basic nature of the mind is purity. No matter how troubled or deluded someone's mind is currently, their basic nature is purity. In this episode, we try to get an understanding and an experience of the basic nature of the mind: purity, clarity, and awareness. “The deep, peaceful clarity of our essential mind is in the nature of love, and in this calm atmosphere the disturbances of hatred and anger have no place. While absorbed in this deep state of awareness, there is no chance for a harmful thought to agitate us. It is not a question of consciously deciding to refrain from anger and behave virtuously; this loving, benevolent feeling arises spontaneously and effortlessly, from the depths of our being. As this feeling of spaciousness grows and as we become closer to the correct view of nonconcrete non-self-existence, a sense of unity between ourselves and everything else will arise. Instead of feeling suffocated and oppressed by our surroundings — “It's me against them” — we will feel as if there is room enough for everything in the world. There is space for everything. Within the clear space of nonduality, everything flows freely in a constant process of coming and going, growing and dying, arising and disappearing. Within this expanse of non-self-existent reality, all things function perfectly without obstructing one another. There is no conflict, no confusion, and no separation. Instead of feeling alienated from our environment, from others, or even from ourselves, we share in the experience of universal harmony.” —Lama Yeshe Excellent are tamed mules, Thoroughbreds, horses of the Indus valley, Tusked elephants and great elephants. But even more excellent Are people who have tamed themselves. Not by means of these animals could one go To that place not gone to, Where a self-tamed person goes By means of a well-tamed, disciplined self.
