According to Pew Research, in a comparison of 72 nations, the US fell from 6th place in math performance in 1997 to 38th place in 2017. Yet, by 2017 the US government was spending $12,800 per student. In 2019, the average Math SAT score across the nation came in at 528 out of a total 800. In the same year, classical schools saw an average score of 611 with similar results in reading, writing, and the sciences. For centuries, the kind of education we call classical has produced superior educational outcomes often with far fewer resources. So what is it about classical education that makes such a difference for students and parents? In short, classical education succeeds with tried and true methods of teaching and learning, many of which have been used for centuries or more, and all of which are rooted in what we know about human nature and how and why children learn. In this keynote address, Dr. Jonathan Yonan will examine the values and virtues that make classical education the best possible educational option for students and families. This lecture was delivered live at the Fall Classical Summit, a regional classical conference held at Thales Academy Apex Junior High-High School on October 7, 2022.

You heard right... Today my personal coach is on the show! Life is full of transitions from one season to another. Most of our life is spent in the "in-between." AKA - the space between where we are and the place we want to be. Some of these transitions can be extremely hard to navigate. In 2021, I had an inclination that I was going to be hitting one of these big life transitions soon. So, I hired a personal coach who specializes in exactly that. And let me tell you, I'm sure glad I did. ;) Sarah is a therapist and coach with over 15 years of experience. She supports and challenges her clients to explore the unknown pieces of themselves with safety and authenticity so they learn to broaden their perspectives and trust their own unique path forward. When she's not coaching she's most likely expressing herself through movement, which informs her life and work and is most often expressed through her love of travel, yoga, and Argentine tango. Sarah helped me so much that I had to bring her to the show. In this episode we go deep into how to: Go through big life transitions with grace Trust ourselves Move past limiting beliefs Cultivate core self-awareness Get authentic with ourselves You're not alone in whatever season you're in. ❤️   To Connect With Sarah Further: Instagram | sarahyonan.com | Thrive In Your 30's Facebook Group   To Connect With Chelann Watt Further: Instagram | chelannagain.com   Music Credit: Chelann Again Intro by 7ky Walk Of Life By 7ky

In part two of my far-ranging interview with Washington Post food editor Joe Yonan, we talked about his career in journalism and the ever-evolving world of food media. Joe told me about his winding path to food journalism. After years of reporting local news, he eventually made his way to the Boston Globe. There, he became travel editor, but found himself yearning to write about food, instead. How did he manage to acquire one of the few coveted roles as staff food writer? He told his editor, “I’m going to leave… if anyone's listening and you're able to do this, make yourself indispensable and then threaten to leave." At a certain point, it felt like his career at the Globe was stalling. So when the Washington Post came calling in 2006, Yonan listened. “I just said, ‘I really want to do it.’ I mean, it also was more resources, bigger staff. I thought naively at the time that the Post was in so much better shape than the Globe was.” Little did he know, Joe was about to take on the monumental task of shepherding the Food section into the digital age, transferring thousands of recipes from the papers archive to the Post's online database. Since that was shortly after I launched Serious Eats, Joe and I would have long conversations about where food media was going. "You know, Ed,” he said, “I remember your advice having something to do with my mindset back then… I knew what you were up to with Serious Eats… I remember you told me about Twitter. I mean, you didn't tell me about it, but... I remember asking you. I was like, "You know, I don't know. Should I bother with this? Should I bother?" And you said, "You absolutely should bother." Finally, we got around to talking about Serious Eater, which Joe had just finished reading on the train up from DC. "It's so much more dramatic than I had expected. I think for me what resonated was the passion and the drive to make something work in the face of all of these obstacles. I mean, just one obstacle after another. And just the commitment to keep going and making it work no matter what happened." After all, it’s not a story so dissimilar from his own. I had a blast talking to Joe, and I think you’ll equally enjoy listening to this episode of Special Sauce.  ---   The full transcript for this episode can be found over here at Serious Eats: https://www.seriouseats.com/preview?record=444871

It's always fun to have a longtime friend on Special Sauce because I always learn so much about the person sitting across from me, no matter how long I've known them. And that's just what happened when I sat down with Washington Post Food Editor Joe Yonan. Yonan spent the first ten years of his career writing, reporting, and editing for suburban newspapers in the Boston area, during which time he learned a lot of valuable lessons about telling stories. "You know one of the things that reporting does," Yonan notes, "especially if you start out in a small place, is that you have to learn how to make a water-and-sewer board meeting interesting and relevant to people who have no interest in it." Eventually, he got tired of hard news coverage, and so he did what many other people at the time did: He read What Color is Your Parachute?, the enormously popular self-help book. "You're supposed to sit in a quiet place and have a pen and a pad down and you're supposed to close your eyes and imagine yourself both working and happy, believe it or not," Yonan says, recalling one of the exercises in the book designed to help you find your calling. "And I got all set up to do it, I had the pen and paper and I closed my eyes and in five seconds I was like, 'Oh, it's food.' Food makes me happy, food has always made me happy." I met Yonan when I went to Boston to promote my pizza book in 2005, and I took him on a Boston tour de pizza for the Globe's food section, and during our conversation he reminded me of a sage bit of wisdom I gave him way back then, which I'd completely forgotten. "I don't know how many places we went to," Yonan says, "I mean, it was ridiculous. I remember at one point we're on place eight or nine or something, and I am suffering physically...Do you remember what you said to me? I've repeated it hundreds of times since then. You said to me, 'Joe, the good ones learn to eat through the pain.'"
For anyone interested in writing about food, becoming any kind of journalist, or just coming to terms with who you really are, or even about learning how to eat twelve slices of pizza in a three-hour period, this episode of Special Sauce with Joe Yonan is required listening. -- The full transcript for this episode can be found over here at Serious Eats: https://www.seriouseats.com/2019/05/special-sauce-joe-yonan-1-1.html

What’s at the heart of healthcare disparities in America? In this episode of Add Passion and Stir, Grantmakers In Health (GIH) President and CEO Faith Mitchell and Washington Post Food and Dining Editor Joe Yonan talk about equity, the long-term effects of stress, and healthy cooking. “The interest in what we now call equity really started in the mid-80’s,” says Mitchell about the differences in health outcomes among ethnic and racial populations. “It’s many-pronged effort at this point. You have people in healthcare settings who are trying to equalize outcomes,” she shares. Yonan emphasizes diversity in his own work in the newsroom and recently released America The Great Cookbook, proceeds from which support No Kid Hungry. “The thing I think I’m proudest of about the book is the sheer diversity of the group of people in the book. It’s all walks of life, all colors, ages,” he says. “The same diversity I went for in the cookbook, I want to show up in the food coverage of the Washington Post.” Well-known for his writing on the intersection of food and health and the value of cooking at home, Yonan believes, “People eat healthier food if they make it for themselves.” Mitchell, whose grandfather was a West-Indian chef and caterer, notes the importance of home cooking and family meals in her own life. “These days cooking at home feels very revolutionary,” she says. In both her personal and professional lives, Mitchell believes in the importance how you treat other people on a daily basis. “So much comes down to whether…you’re bringing love to that interaction or whether you’re bringing anger or hostility or stress,” she says. Inspired, Debbie Shore closes the conversation, “I’m going to show some love today!” Share in this wide-ranging discussion about the effects of diversity, equity and healthy eating.

#99 Big Brothers and Sister of Pittsburgh Holiday Special Don't you wish when you were in high school you could talk to someone older, who wasn't your parents, or your teachers. Someone who was just there to give advice, without judgement. Maybe an outside perspective into a job you were eyeing up, but weren't sure was the right fit for you. That is only a small part of what Big Brothers Big Sisters of America does for kids.  My best friend Jhon Yonan has been telling me about his little for over 7 years. I have seen him grow with him, and change for the better himself along side his little. It was something I have wanted to do for quite some time, but life gets in the way. My husband and I are FINALLY in the process of becoming "Bigs", and we cannot wait. I think it is so important, not just to the kids to have someone who helps them as the grow up, but for the "Bigs". As with most things, I didn't know the in's and out's of becoming a "Big". So for this holiday season, I thought, what better way to close out 2017, than to have a representative of BBBS on the show. I invited Counsilman Tom Baker who is the Chief Community Officer of BBBS to come on the show and talk about it's history as one of the oldest non profits around. BBBS started in New York City back in 1904, and has quite an interesting history that we talk about, but my interest also extends to experience. I wanted to know, so I assume others would as well. What the entire process is for becoming a "Big", what you can expect, ideas of where to take your little, and so on. Tom answers all of your questions if you are thinking about joining one of their three ways to become involved. It didn't stop there for me though, for the second half of the podcast I bring in Jhon Yonan, and his little Marvin Jamar Lee Gurley- Boyd to talk about their experience with one another. It is super endearing to hear the two of them reminisce about when they met, the things they have done, and what they have learning from one another through the years. Tune in and happy holidays everyone Come out and support BBBS at "Marta Match- A throwback of The Match Game" at City Theatre on January 5th! YOU could be chosen as a contestant to win big prizes. Join me as I invite personalities of Pittsburgh on stage with me that include- Rick Sebak, Kellee Maize, Day Bracey, and many more. Magic by Lee Terbosic. Drag Show by Deep Violet. Free beer samplings by Helicon Brewery Raffle Baskets Part of the proceeds benefit Big Brothers and Sisters of Pittsburgh Sponsored by- Gaucho Parilla Argentina, Levity, Aldo's Food Service, Helicon Brewery, Specialty Food Service, The Church Recording Studio, and Harris Grill.
