BFH #068 What do retriever training and life's toughest challenges have in common? More than you might think. In this heartfelt conversation with CGA member Seth Vaughn, we explore how training a golden retriever named Rusty became not just about creating a hunting companion, but a journey of personal transformation and healing.Seth takes us from his Southern Illinois upbringing surrounded by outdoor pursuits to his pivotal moment witnessing a trained retriever at work in Arkansas. That experience changed everything, setting him on a path that would eventually lead to Cornerstone Gundog Academy. Through candid stories of both struggle and triumph, Seth reveals how patience during fetch-hold-release training created the foundation for Rusty's later success, and how discovering his dog's response to verbal praise unlocked new levels of confidence and drive. The conversation shifts from technical training insights to profound life lessons when Seth shares how dog training became his sanctuary during an exceptionally challenging 2023. Facing critical incidents as a police officer and his wife's serious car crash, Seth found clarity and restoration in those quiet moments working with Rusty. "Go train your dog" became more than advice—it became divine guidance that helped him navigate life's storms. With hunting stories that showcase Rusty's impressive abilities (including diving completely underwater for a duck and marking a teal at 75 yards), Seth demonstrates how solid training translates to real-world results. But perhaps the most valuable takeaway comes in his parting wisdom: "There's really only one thing that you can control—how much effort you put into it." In retriever training as in life, simply showing up consistently is the foundation of success.Ready to transform your relationship with your retriever while discovering unexpected lessons about patience, faith, and perseverance? This episode will inspire you to trust the process and train with your heart, not just your hands.

In this episode we discuss all the constructs and schemas we break down via nostalgia (which isn't cringe), the madlibs that is the genre of “Canadian improvised soap-opera”, the legend of the McDonald's caboose, being at peace with North West being Simba, mystery smells, Facebook memories of humiliating past statuses, how when you see something (a bad show) you need to say something (horrible about it), that classic commuter archetype of the lothario, not being a patriot, sleeper cells awoken by the national anthem, when your Canadian is showing, how Toronto is technically Little America, actors making choices, hooking up on the GO Train, and SO MUCH MORE!!!
We got the bugs worked out since the last episode and we were both able to participate. We both really enjoyed this episode and feel as though there are many great lessons to be learned. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we mark Earth Week by discussing some of the news that happened on this planet. We will travel from Washington D.C. to Kiev where there's finally some good news in that war effort, but it's just too bad that there wasn't any good news when it comes to funding our regional transit system. Also, we will talk and act locally with one of our Guelph city councillors. This Thursday, April 25, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: For a Few Dollars More... At long last, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send much need financial aid to Ukraine. Now three years into their all-out war against Russia, the Ukrainians have been fighting with anything they can as they desperately await help from the States, aid that was mostly held up by Russia's new fair-haired girl, Marjorie Taylor Greene. With the bullets set to flow again, might 2024 be a breakthrough year for our Ukrainian allies? Slowpiercer. Last week, Premier Doug Ford announced expansion plans for several GO Train lines, but not everyone gets improved transit equally. While the Government of Ontario increased frequency on the Kitchener Line, those additional trains don't make it all the way to Kitchener, which is one of many gaps in a system that's desperately awaiting more service for users. Why is Ontario still so far behind on regional transit? The Shroud of Erin. Council is taking the week off, but it's been very, very busy lately on a variety of topics. One of those topics was a series of complaints about the mayor's social media posts, and out of that came a couple of motions about beefing up council's online policies. The author of those motions was Ward 1 Councillor Erin Caton, who will join us this week to talk about about the results, and they will also look ahead to new council business in May. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

There's a new project coming to the Durham Region in Ontario, Canada. It's a mixed-use development, in Pickering's city core. This is the best affordable project in the Greater Toronto Area, with one bedroom condos starting in the $500's, at $1,050 per square foot.Normally I would say don't just buy based on what's cheap, but I'm excited about this project because of the value that you get buying into a master-planned community, all created by one developer. Imagine a new city plopped on top of a thriving mall, with 6,000 units anchored by a 180-store mall, with 300,000 sq ft of office space, community centre, a hotel, and parks. All this density will create new employment opportunities, with entertainment for residents not only in the new towers, but in the overall Durham Region itself.Getting to Downtown Toronto is also easy, with a 6-stop GO Train ride that will bring you to Union Station in 40 minutes. It's also right off the Highway 401, and will be a part of a new bus network.Join us as we do a deep dive into the Pickering City Centre development, and discuss whether or not it is a good buy.If you're interested in learning more about this project and how it compares with other opportunities in Toronto, give us a call.Watch this podcast on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Lzv5gVBLKVISchedule a 15-minute Zoom call with Ken: https://www.broadviewavenue.ca/appointments▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬Subscribe now to keep updated for more information. If you want to chat with us, do the following:1. The Ontario government has promised a fully funded fare integration system across the GTHA by the end of the year. This would allow transit riders to pay one fare as they boarded a bus in York region, hopped on the GO Train, then grabbed the Toronto transit vehicle. It's a proposal that's been promised by governments for generations. How feasible is it? And what would it entail? Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP and TAKE A BEATINGIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase don't beat yourself up. When we say don't beat yourself up, it means that you shouldn't think bad things about yourself after you fail at something. Let's say that you've just gone to take your driver's test. Maybe you're a young person who wants to get their driver's license, and you've gone to take the test and you failed. You did not pass your driver's test. We might say to a person in that situation, "Hey, don't beat yourself up. It's not a big deal. If you work hard and practice your driving, I'm sure you'll pass the next time." So when you say to someone don't beat yourself up, it means don't be sad about that thing that happened. Don't dwell on it. Don't think about it over and over again. When we say don't beat yourself up, we mean just relax, take it easy. If you failed your driver's test, just practice a bit. You'll probably pass the next time. The second phrase I wanted to teach you is the phrase take a beating. And I don't actually know how to describe this. So, let me give you some example sentences. You could say, "Wow, the house really took a beating during that storm." Maybe there was a really bad storm, and there was lots of rain and wind, and maybe parts of the house got damaged. You could say, "Wow, the house really took a beating during that storm." Maybe your favorite team was playing a game, and they lost really, really badly. Maybe the score was 10, nothing in a football game. That's a pretty bad score. You could say, "Wow, my team really took a beating during that game." So when something takes a beating, I guess what we're saying is that things go badly, things don't go well. If you're talking about a thing, maybe there was some damage. If you're talking about a team, it simply means that they didn't win and they got beat by a large margin. So, to review, when you say don't beat yourself up, it means, don't think bad things about yourself. Don't be negative about yourself after a failure. And when we say that you take a beating, it means that things go badly for you and you definitely didn't win. And if we're talking about a thing, maybe it got damaged just a little bit.Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Reza, and Reza says, "Seeing a weaving driver," that's someone who drives like this, like really fast between a whole bunch of cars. "Seeing a weaving driver who cuts me off is when I experience road rage," or "When I'm running late for an appointment and hit a traffic jam." Traffic jams are not fun. My response, is this. Traffic jams are the worst. It's why I almost always take the train when I go to Toronto. I can just sit and relax during the trip. So thank you, Reza for that comment. That is a great comment and great use of the phrase road rage, as well. And thanks for talking about traffic jams.I don't like traffic jams. And I usually go to Toronto every year around this time, usually towards the end of October and beginning of November, I make a trip to Toronto. And this year I'm not able to do it. But, normally when I go, I take the train. There's something called the GO Train. So I drive for a little bit and I jump on the GO Train. I buy a ticket and I jump on the GO Train, and I take the go train to Toronto. And it's just really nice.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)
