Thank you to Donna Marcantonio for leading our February 14th Empower Women Event, Looking Forward: Real Estate Trends in 2023. Donna discussed five emerging trends that we expect for 2023 and beyond. She talked about issues around low inventory and how that impacts housing affordability, how market fundamentals are “normalizing” as some markets weaken due to diminishing pandemic tailwinds, and the potential for a cyclical economic downturn. She also looked at how the pandemic forced structural shifts in how and where we live, work, and recreate in ways that seem destined to endure. Donna Marcantonio, a real estate agent with The Petrowsky Jones Group, represents buyers and sellers from all walks of life and is equally experienced working with developers on ground-up construction and managing luxury rentals in the commercial real estate realm. Fascinated by urban planning, she is perpetually curious about how urban plans contribute to the quality of life for members within the community. A creative visionary who thrives on finding innovative solutions, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more dynamic realtor. Ultimately, Donna knows that buying or selling a home is a transformative experience and she is renowned for being exceedingly thoughtful in her approach. We hope you enjoy this episode! Thank you to Nina Frusztajer, MD, MS., for kicking off our 2023 Empower Women series with her talk, Overcoming Obstacles to Healthy Eating. Even if we know what to eat, how do we put the principles into practice and address what gets in the way? Nutrition information can be confusing and contradictory. Dr. Frusztajer discussed what healthy eating looks like and she addressed common obstacles like no time for meal prep, lack of recipes for simple and nutritious meals, over-reliance on takeout, a lifestyle that revolves around food-centric events, lack of self-care, and eating-driven by emotions and stress. Nina Frusztajer, MD, MS, is a physician with a master's degree in nutrition, an author, a certified life coach, and a yoga instructor. She has worked in the field of nutrition for 30 years, helping people lose weight and use food as medicine to feel and look their best, including clients with medical issues. We'd like to thank Ellen Glickman-Simon for hosting our April 12th Empower Women Event, Estate Planning for Serenity and Empowerment. An increased sense of serenity and empowerment are two of the main reasons to plan for your legal health. Many of us, especially parents of young children, do not realize how comforting it can be to have a plan in place in case of illness or death. Instead, we feel apprehensive about the choices involved in the estate planning process: who to name as beneficiaries, fiduciaries (e.g., health care agents), or guardians. While it takes courage to do this work and discipline to make the time to do it, the rewards are great. Feelings of relief, pride, empowerment, and solace often follow a completed estate plan. Ellen offered a manageable, step-by-step approach to creating your Will, Health Care Proxy, Durable Power of Attorney, Trust (for certain situations) and related estate planning documents. Ellen Glickman-Simon, J.D., L.L.M. Ellen graduated from Tufts University in 1982, received her law degree from Northeastern University School of Law in 1987, and her master's degree (L.L.M.) in tax law from Boston University School of Law in 1988. She practiced law in the tax department of a major Boston firm as well as a suburban business firm before establishing her own office in Sudbury, MA, in 1995 where she has over 25 years of estate planning experience. Thank you to Maggi Alexander for leading our November 9th Empower Women Event, Establishing Year End Philanthropic Goals. Many donors struggle with being “an inch deep and a mile wide” in their giving and aspire to develop a coherent, strategic plan and a clear sense of the legacy they wish to leave to their communities and families. However, they may not know how or feel rushed at the end of the year to make quick decisions about donations. This workshop aimed to help participants better define their goals for philanthropy, uncover their deepest interests and passions, and begin the process of zeroing in on a focus and structure for their giving that provides both meaning and impact. Participants left the program with renewed sense of purpose and practical tools for getting from here to there. Maggi Alexander is a Partner at TPI and directs TPI's Center for Global Philanthropy. In this role, she supports individuals and families, foundations, and corporations in aligning their philanthropy with their values in ways that are more strategic. An entrepreneurial leader, Maggi has spent over 30 years focused on philanthropy to improve the quality of life for low-income children, families, and communities in the United States and over 30 countries worldwide. She has extensive experience building partnerships and alliances that cut across traditional divides and has worked in the corporate, philanthropic, nonprofit, and public sectors. Maggi's experience in organizational development spans the early start-up process to achieving scale and sustainability; she is passionate about turning great ideas into reality. We had a great conversation with Rebecca Moore for our June Empower Women Series event. The single most energizing force in our lives is to know and live out our unique purpose. Yet financial challenges and inequities remain for women who want to follow their calling and care for their families. The pandemic has amplified the need for women to redefine their purpose and the workforce. Every day, Rebecca meets ordinary yet extraordinary mid-century women who have taken stock of their lives and rediscovered their purpose through entrepreneurship. She outlined a framework for how you too can better understand your unique set of strengths, clarify your mission, and make a meaningful impact while earning an income. Rebecca Moore earned her BA in art history from Smith College. While working for the Smithsonian Institution, she earned an MBA from Boston University's Questrom School of Business where she caught the entrepreneurial “bug.” She was then hired by an environmental start-up and years later started her own marketing consulting firm. In 1997 she founded and grew her own venture-backed dot-com until their exit strategy was thwarted by the fallout from 9-11, and they decided to wind down the company in 2002. For the next 15 years, as she grew her family, she continued to work with startups and nonprofits in the retail, arts, education, internet, and service sectors. In 2017 she founded InANutshell Consulting to advise female founders on business development, marketing, and growth strategies. In 2019, she founded the Women's Impact Mastermind to guide small groups of founders to accelerate their business through interactive peer training and accountability. The curriculum is based on coursework with world-renowned experts and focuses on guiding founders to master their mindset, margins, and messaging and up-level their businesses with more ease and joy. Tax planning can be overwhelming to navigate so Jennifer was here to talk about how to plan for both your personal and business taxes. She discussed topics such as how to take advantage of the tax laws, old and new to get the deepest reduction that you are entitled to, and how to make sure you’re taking advantage of your retirement plan. She also answered business tax questions, such as what’s your choice of entity for your business? How does the PPP Loan work? And what advantages can I take if I am just an employee and do not own my own business? Jennifer Chase-Williams, CPA, MBAA of McLaren and Associates, has over 30 years of experience with a profound understanding of tax issues—especially those concerning the ramifications of stock options and other employee incentive programs. Owning and managing five daycare centers in Central Massachusetts gave Jennifer firsthand experience in running a business, and she enthusiastically shares the lessons learned. Taking a hands-on approach to clients’ needs, she works with the McLaren and Associates team to uncover options that others miss and help to reduce their taxes. On this episode, Susie Panduku, Wealth Advisor at Lexington Wealth Management joined the conversation to add a higher perspective about planning and how it all interacts. We are extremely excited to have Sarah Hinman for our March 9th Empower Women conversation, Investing with Purpose. It’s no secret that COVID-19 altered the world as we know it, including the investment universe. With ESG (environmental, social, governance) investing already trending upward pre-pandemic, this public health crisis and its subsequent economic impact seems to have accelerated this development with no signs of slowing. During this interview we focused on Mission-Aligned Investing™, we walked through the key areas that we believe are necessary to understanding the benefits, drawbacks, limits and opportunities with this type of investment. On September 8th we hosted "My loved one has been diagnosed with Dementia. Now what? " This event was led by Melissa McGee, Director of The Courtyard at Youville Place and Susan Snow, Director of Marketing at Youville Place. Finding out that a loved one has been diagnosed w/ any form of dementia including Alzheimer’s can be life-changing and bring about many questions and concerns for the family. Currently, there is no cure, and often a family member becomes the primary caregiver. While this is an act of love and can often make a difference in your loved one’s quality of life, it can also be a very stressful and emotionally overwhelming journey. But take heart, there are many resources available in the area to help you navigate this journey. In the conversation we delved into those supports and discuss when and if it makes sense to seek the supports of an assisted living community. We hosted a conversation with Jennifer Sullo on Sustainable Investing. Investors are more aware than ever before of how large corporations are impacting the world we live in. It is difficult to ignore headlines and social media about how climate change or poor corporate governance are negatively affecting communities. Sustainable investing is the practice of investing to achieve market-rate financial returns while pursuing positive environmental, social and/or governance (ESG) factors and their impact. Over the past few years, sustainable investing has evolved from a niche investment idea to attracting enough capital to start having an impact on global challenges at a meaningful scale. Jennifer Sullo is a Principal at Rocaton Investment Advisors where she works directly with institutional investors on a wide range of issues, including asset allocation, investment structure design and investment manager selection. She’s predominately focused on corporate retirement plans (DB / DC), insurance portfolios, and the wealth channel. Jen joined Rocaton from J.P. Morgan where she was a Vice President and led a cross-functional team responsible for institutional outsourcing solutions. Prior to her role at J.P. Morgan, Jen held various positions at Voya Investment Management and GE Asset Management, working within US and EMEA institutional distribution and global fixed income trading channels. Jen graduated from Fairfield University with honors and an M.S. in Finance; she graduated from Trinity College with honors and a B.S. in Economics. Thank you to all that joined the live webinar. On April 14th for we hosted, Estate Planning Across the Spectrum- How Young Adults and Senior Citizens Benefit from Estate Planning, with by Pam Pardoe. Estate planning has little to do with age or assets; it is not only for families with children or the wealthy. Once an individual reaches the age of majority, 18 in most states, including Massachusetts, their parents will no longer be able to access medical information or make healthcare decisions for their child and will no longer be able to act on the child’s behalf in financial transactions. At the opposite end of the spectrum, elderly folks may benefit or require help with healthcare needs and financial decisions; if the proper documents are not in place, the result could have a dramatic and costly result. There are a few simple estate planning documents that a young adult or senior citizen can complete which can direct health care providers and medical professionals as well as banks and financial institutions to communicate with those people identified in the documents. Proper estate planning can provide peace of mind to parents who will be able to stay involved in their children’s healthcare and financial decisions. Similarly having the estate planning documents in place can provide peace of mind to those caring for their parents so they can help make healthcare and financial decisions if the need arises. Pamela Pardoe is the founder of Pardoe Law, P. C. a family law and estate planning law firm based here in Lexington, MA. She works with individuals and families on creating estate plans tailored to each client. Pamela has experience with all aspects of guardianship and conservatorship proceedings for minors and adults.
