In this episode, we will be heading back to Big Bear CA to try our luck at Gold Mountain 3N69. Gold Mountain is one of the more challenging offroad / 4x4 trails on the Big Bear Mountain Range. The trail starts by immediately winding its way up to just over 8,000 feet. Due to the technical challenges of this rock crawling trail and its unique location overlooking Big Bear Lake, this trail is a popular destination for many off-roaders. Besides the simplicity of the location, Gold Mountain offers drivers two different technical ledge/waterfalls, the most significant rock garden on the mountain - the best spot for group photos, and the best views of the resort town. But be ready; the trail can easily deceive most drivers resulting in body damage to your rocker panels or something worse. Monique wields both a wrench and a flatiron (for her hair) and gives wise insights on how each tool has played an important role in her adventures in her 100 series Toyota Landcruiser. Unfortunately, her well-known and loved Landcruiser is no more. Monique joined the rollover club on the the Dempster Highway last fall, totaling her rig and leaving her stranded in the remote Arctic. Tune into the podcast to hear Monique describe what it felt like to experience a crash of this magnitude and walk away with minor injuries. The easiest way to get into overlanding is to simply just go. “You need a shelter, you need food and water, and you need some safety gear.” says Brad Kowitz, the creator of TrailRecon, a wildly popular YouTube channel dedicated to all things overlanding. “That's my advice, just get the basics, get out there, and go have a good time.”   Helping folks get outside and experience the benefits of nature is the whole reason Brad and his wife Regena started TrailRecon. The channel debuted in 2015 with a video that Brad and Regena's son Jordan made of their trip to the mud caves in California's Anza Borrego State Park. The video gained an audience and soon the Kowitzs were posting about all their camping trips. The channel went viral. Now, with almost half a million subscribers, TrailRecon covers every aspect of the overland adventure, from camp cooking to vehicle mods to detailed trail reports.   Even though Brad has reached next level YouTube fame, getting on a trip with TrailRecon is not out of reach. Brad is the face of E3 Overland — a nationwide overland community that helps to educate, empower, and entertain folks on the trail. In addition to web-based learning, E3 focuses on in-person events that get members together all across the country. Brad says joining members on E3 events keeps him grounded and connected to people who love the outdoors. You can hear more about how you can join TrailRecon on an overlanding trip in 2022 on episode 13 of the Gaia GPS Offroad podcast. Plus, you won't want to miss Brad's take on overlanding with a full-size pickup, the benefits of traveling with an offroad trailer, and Regena's sage advice for making a reluctant spouse fall in love with roughing it in the great outdoors. If you want to follow in the tread of TrailRecon and plan custom overland trips far away from the crowds, you're going to need Gaia GPS Premium. From rooftop tents to camp cookware, Jason points out the gear worth the investment and the gear that's a hard pass. “I don't want to turn people away from the passion to buy stuff, because we do live in a consumer-driven economy." Jason says on the podcast. Casey Kaiser was on a solo trip in Eastern Oregon's remote backcountry when all of the sudden his yellow Jeep Wrangler burst into flames. "And I just noticed out of the corner of my eye, it looked like a little steam coming out from underneath my hood," Casey says on the Gaia GPS Offroad podcast. "And as soon as I lifted the hood, flames erupted from underneath there... I have a serious problem here." Casey unloaded a fire extinguisher onto the burning engine block, but the fire kept raging. Flames quickly engulfed the entire Jeep, burning it to the ground and taking all of Casey's personal items with it. Soon, the blazing Jeep quickly became the least of Casey's problems. The fire threatened to spread into the surrounding sagebrush - a virtual tinderbox of fuel. All alone, Casey worked for hours to contain the blaze. And with the embers finally dwindling in the darkness of the night, Casey took shelter under a Juniper tree and watched as his generously upgraded Jeep smoldered into a pile of ash in the sand. Tune in to the Gaia GPS Offroad podcast to learn how Casey narrowly escaped disaster in the high desert. Casey delves into the lessons he learned from this catastrophe, including the expensive reality of insurance coverage. Find out how Gaia GPS helped Casey's friends find him 30 miles off the pavement and in the middle of the night. Plus, learn why Casey played the odds and replaced his totaled Jeep with, you won't believe this, another brand new, fully upgraded Jeep Wrangler. However, I'm working to get better and the first step towards that is picking up Gaia GPS. In this episode, we sit down again with Bruce Nguyen. We spoke to Bruce last November in episode 18 after his amazing Moab 240 finish. We asked him to come back to discuss his gear. Specifically, all the gear it takes to run and crew a successful 200+ mile multiday race. Bruce just returned from crewing his buddy Michael Li on his amazing JamOnTam200 Fatass, where Michael completed a record 21 repeats with over 56K feet of vert from the historic 1929 Lytton Square Clock in Mill Valley, CA to the top of Mount Tamalpais. This was also a shake-out for the new Ultra Taj Mahal (or UTM for short) which is Bruce’s new off-grid travel trailer that he plans to use as a mobile aid station at both Cocodona 250 and Tahoe 200. The UTM is equipped with a full-sized bed, shower, restroom, salon, and electric stove for some down-home cooking. It’s a major upgrade from sleeping on a cot in his family’s minivan. But don’t get too comfortable just yet. Mt Tam threw them a curveball of high winds, rain, and hail while summiting the second night. The UTM was only a few miles away and they had chosen to travel light. They had no rain gear and were forced to huddle in the ladies’ restroom at the summit for an hour doing jumping jacks as they waited for the storm to pass. Lesson learned…be prepared for that 2% chance of rain.Bruce is a busy family man and more of a weekend warrior. Through COVID he has relied on fat races and adventure runs to keep him challenged and trained. But don’t peg him just yet, his race planning is legit. Moab 240 2020 required detailed logistical planning. He spent many hours educating himself on the off-grid lifestyle and what he would need to keep his soda cold and his Elevated Legs Recovery Boots charged. Prepare for the worst. Mountain races have a good 20 miles between aid stations, and anything can happen. Bruce carries two emergency bivy sacks. You can sleep on them, crawl inside, or wear them as a poncho. Make sure your pacer has their own! Bruce also carries a Garmin InReach and his smartphone equipped with Gaia GPS app to keep him safely on the right trail. He also has been known to use walkie-talkies to give his crew a heads up of his arrival and start chatting about food options. Don’t forget to pack your drop bags with your DUPLICATE cold and wet weather gear. Yes, You Need DUPLICATES. Walkie-talkie your crew and they can run, grab your drop bag and have it ready at the UTM. Find out if your race moves/bounces drop bags forward. Keep several pairs of dry socks in your pack for river crossings. Oh, there is so much more… Remember Bruce’s motto: Have a plan but live in the moment and you will find Zen.Elevated Legs: Elevated Legs Recovery BootsGaia GPS: https://www.gaiagps.com/CalTopo: Home - CalTopoCocodona 250: cocodona.comTahoe 200: - Tahoe 200 Endurance Run Ultra---Your hosts: Greg Larkin / Mike Turner / Jessica HarrisArtwork/logo by Krista Cavender: https://www.kcavenderdesign.com/ | IG: https://www.instagram.com/kristacavender/Intro/outro music: Joseph McDade - Elevation: https://josephmcdade.com/music/elevationSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/themile99interview)

This quarantine situation is hitting us all pretty hard. Those of us that are use to chasing horizons and exploring twisting dusty paths to nowhere are clawing at the walls. At least I am. Today we're going to look at a quick list of five things we can do right now to prepare for our next adventure. Echoes of Adventure: Season 2, Episode 6 - Right now many of us are cooped up with no ability to travel. Now is a perfect chance to prepare for our next adventure. In this episode we look at five things we can do right now from the comfort of our own home. 5 Things To Do Right Now: #1 - Nut and bolt your rig while using your mobile tool kit.  Inventory what’s in there, make a list, and check to see what’s missing or what’s in there that you don’t need. #2 - Practice camp cooking in your back yard.  Same idea as your tool kit, do an inventory and see what’s missing and what’s extra.  Also, check expiration dates and if your seasonings are clumping. #3 - Inventory and inspect your recovery gear.  Check your synthetics for snags.  If need be, wash it.  Again, check to see what’s missing from your kit, or what’s extra you don’t need to carry. #4 - Do some digital exploring.  Never been to Moab? Hit up google maps, Trail damage.com, and other online resources.  Interested in a BDR?  Hit up their site and put together a plan for running one of those routes.  See what other resources you’ll want like the Purple Lizard or Lat40 maps, and gazetteers. #5 - Learn a new skill.  Do you have your HAM?  Now’s a great time to study for the test.  Not familiar with Gaia GPS? There are great videos on YouTube.  First Aid skills rusty, pick up a book or do some research online.  Maybe make the jump from WFA to WFR. We’re all in this together even if we’re apart.  So don’t hesitate to reach out to your fellow enthusiasts to see what they’re up to and how they’re passing the time.

Today on the 20 Minute Fitness podcast we bring you the popular mini-series special, our favorite health & fitness apps of the month. To take full advantage of our last summer month, we dedicated this episode to outdoors activities. Because why would you want to get stuck in a gym, when you can exercise in the fresh air as well?Listen on to find out which are the outdoors physical activities that are not just efficient, but also fun and which apps you should download for them! What You Will Learn1) Our Favorite Hiking Apps - Gaia GPS App & Maps 3D ProThe best form of physical activity that takes full advantage of the weather and the beautiful nature is hiking. While we might think of hiking as more of a casual sport, it actually also brings significant fitness gains to the table. With an hour of hiking, you can burn as much as 370 kcals. Our ultimate go-to hiking apps are Gaia GPS App & Maps 3D Pro. Gaia GPS App has an over 1 million people community and a great database of hikes. For each trail, you can check its length, difficulty level and how long it takes to complete it before you get on the road. The Gaia GPS app uses intelligent routing tools, and tracks your distance, altitude climbed and elevation change.Just like Gaia GPS, Maps 3D Pro will also allow you to download maps and use them offline and track a bunch of metrics during your hike. But what's really special about Maps 3D Pro is its 3D visualization feature of the trails. So if you're struggling with topography, you can ask Maps 3D Pro for help! Listen to this week's episode to find out which of the hiking apps is the one for you!2) Our Favorite Mountain Biking App - Trailforks AppIf you want to opt for something of a bit more an extreme sport, try mountain biking. With Trailforks you can discover more than 130,000 trails in 95+ countries that you can ride through with your bike. The app acts similarly to a crowdfunding campaign, as every user can submit new trails to the library. Similarly to the hiking apps, Trailforks also has an offline map feature and gives you a bunch of info about each route. These include route popularity, elevation profiles, topography and points of interest. And if you don't want to ride alone, you can use the heatmap feature to discover where you might find some other bikers. Based on the heatmap, you'll also be able to discover the most popular trails in your area. So, are you ready to hop on your bike?3) Our Favorite Rockclimbing App - Mountain ProjectTo up your extreme sports game, you can also go for an exciting rock-climbing trip. This sport is not only fun but as you can imagine elevates your heart rate and hence has great cardiovascular results.Finding the best climbs might be tricky sometimes, but the Mountain Project is here to help. This app has almost 200,000 routes right at your fingertips. Once a climber finished a route, they can leave comments and also add pictures to it, so other users can find the perfect spot for themselves. Additionally, you can also filter the climb database of Mountain Project based on difficulty level, star rating, and discipline. To keep track of your climbs, you can log each one you've completed and add data, such as date tried, style, whether you've climbed solo and attach pictures. Besides the app, Mountain Project also has a great desktop version. Here you can find additional climbing information, such as blogs and forums, which can come handy for both beginners and pros. Press play to learn more about why Mountain Project should be your ultimate rock-climbing buddy!

Episode 043 of F-Stop Collaborate and Listen with Seattle-based landscape photographer Bryan Swan! I have been following Bryan's work for several years, ever since I moved to (and left) Portland, Oregon. Bryan is the creator of the incredibly comprehensive waterfall databases, Water Falls Northwest, and the World Waterfall database. He's also an incredibly good landscape photographer! Bryan and I got a chance to meet-up this past fall in Ridgway, Colorado and camped together for a couple of nights along with Trevor Anderson, another great landscape photographer out of Seattle. When I posed the idea of having Bryan on the podcast, he was totally excited, so we finally made it happen a few months later.  We covered some great topics this week, including: Bryan's journey into landscape photography Bryan's decision to not become a full-time professional photographer The Northwest Waterfall survey and the delicate relationship between the internet and photography locations Tips for photographing waterfalls Stamp collecting vs. exploration & wilderness exploration Scouting tools in the age of the internet, including Gaia GPS and Google Earth Special announcements: Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon! Let’s keep the conversations going! I recently set a goal of $1,000 in monthly contributions which I will use to seed a $1,000 landscape conversation award. This will only be possible if people contribute on Patreon!Additionally, we have collaborated with The League Magazine.  $50 supporters of the podcast on Patreon will get you a free subscription to The League if you sign up on Patreon between now and the end of February, 2018. The League subscription would normally cost you $50, so basically you are getting it for free while supporting the podcast! Supporters already at the $50 level will get the subscription too! League is an annual collectors’ compendium of unique, thoughtful photographic art comprised primarily of work from the League of Landscape Photographers. Two key principles underpin the publication: contributors espouse a mindful, ethical code of behavior in creating photographic work; and contributors wrestle with or promote dialogue about contemporary issues facing humans and the landscape. Lastly, I am happy to announce that I'm now a Formatt-Hitech filter ambassador. Listeners to the podcast get 10% off their order if they use the code "PAYNE10" - thanks for supporting the podcast!
