Send us a textThe American Curmudgeon, John Davies is back for a nostalgic trip down memory lane about how it was growing up in the 80's.Our generation was left to run wild with barely any supervision. We didn't need all these internet connected devices to keep us busy. We found or created things to do. We had real life skills because the technology didn't do it all for us like today. Did technology dumb us all down to the point where we can't do hard things anymore? The short answer is, YES. Even I find it so crazy that not so long ago if we had to find a party, given some vague address and a few clues, we would just FIND IT. Miraculous!!! Think about it, there's literally NO TRACE of your mistakes, embarrassments, failures, or digital footprints from 40 years ago. You get off scot free, as opposed to today. Take a trip through the puzzle of porta-potties at a free-range event, highway happenings, and the new news about prep. This is deeper than “What is MOOP?” This is the ART of Leaving No Trace. It's part of the Burning Man ethos, and it's why Black Rock City is the world's largest Leave No Trace event. Now nearly 100 other Burning Man events around the globe adhere to this attitude, this mindset. It's an ongoing quest to leave less and less of a trace. As the principle is written, it invites us to leave spaces in better shape than we found them. The 75,000 citizens of BRC pick up after themselves. It's miraculous. And we can do more. Those of us who take on the challenge, we see it as a process, a practice, a stretch goal. We look at ways to get closer to that zero point. Each of us is at a different point on the LNT learning curve. The next level is to develop techniques to do it collectively. It is a set of behaviors to be cultivated. In this episode, we talk with some of the unsung heroes: blue: DPW Logistics & Project Manager of Recycle CampBarbarella: Resto's Highway Clean-Up ManagerDA: Playa Restoration ManagerHazmatt: Associate Director of BRC Business OperationsWe look at what gets left behind, so we can grok our cumulative impact, and make a better choice, a better cascade of choices, to teach good citizenship. Residents of Shannon are calling for the current anti-litter policy to be binned amid claims it's ineffective in preventing illegal rubbish disposal. It follows recent reports of persistent dumping in Shannon Town Park which is a recreational and biodiversity area in the heart of the industrial town. The four-hectare site with walkways, native trees and hedgerows known as Shannon Town Park was opened in 2019 with a €1.5 million investment. Located beside the Brú na Sionna apartments, the park is enjoyed by locals young and old and includes a bandstand, children's playground, basketball court, pump track as well as outdoor seating. Despite holding a Green Flag Award from An Taisce for the last few years, the site has been labelled a "litter blackspot" in recent times owing to reports of frequent illegal dumping around the park and its environs. Shannon native and Independent local election candidate Keith McNamara believes a key reason for the prevalence of rubbish in the park is the poor spread of bins. In February alone, 74 complaints relating to waste disposal and six relating to littering were received by Clare County Council. The latest spike in littering in Shannon has prompted some residents to once again criticise the 'Leave No Trace' policy which is a national campaign that encourages people to "plan ahead, be considerate of others and dispose of waste correctly when enjoying the outdoors". The policy is Ireland's only code of ethics programme for walkways and has been adopted by this county's local authority. Shannon Tidy Towns Chairperson Derek Clune says while the policy is admirable in theory, it isn't working well on a practical level. In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says "daily litter picking occurs on behalf of the Council and the mini road sweeper also services the park", while there are nine bins located in the vicinity. The local authority says its Environmental Awareness Officer also works collaboratively with local groups and organisations and visits local schools on an ongoing basis to highlight the litter prevention message and the role of personal responsibility.

We took to the stage at BAD: Sydney Crime Writers' Festival this year to talk about mystery fiction. If you thought that closed circle mysteries had died with Agatha Christie, think again. They will never die although plenty of people do in the books in this session. Benjamin Stevenson's new Everyone on this Train is a Suspect has several dead bodies on a literary festival train, Michael Trant's Gabe Ahern in No Trace is keeping the lowest of profiles on a remote cattle property when death strikes but no one can escape because of a flood and Michelle Prak's debut thriller The Rush has mother and baby in an isolated pub, bikies and backpackers trapped by rain. What is the attraction of this sub-genre of crime fiction? Why will it live forever? We investigate in the closed Metcalfe Auditorium of the State Library of NSW. Mark your exits…

This week, Cindy Juyoung Ok talks with torrin a. greathouse, a transgender cripple-punk poet and essayist who is the author of the forthcoming DEED (Wesleyan University Press), as well as Wound from the Mouth of a Wound (Milkweed Editions, 2020). Ok and greathouse get into poetic forms—which they liken to open-source software—particularly the beloved “burning haibun” form that greathouse created and that she wrote about for Poetry's “Not Too Hard to Master” series. The essay appears in the July/August issue of Poetry alongside their Springsteen-inspired burning haibun, “Dancing in the Dark,” which greathouse reads on the podcast. They also interrogate the anti-trans rhetoric and language of radical white feminist poets, and greathouse reads “There's No Trace of the Word ‘Transgender' in Adrienne Rich's Biography,” which previously appeared in Poetry.
In July, a small group of hikers was apprehended and ticketed for leaving two Adirondack chairs at the summit of Slide Mountain. Those hikers' actions, while misguided, may have been good-intentioned. But they fly in the face of outdoor ethics and "leaving no trace." At the core of "Leave No Trace" are 7 principles that provide a framework of minimum impact practices for safe and sustainable experiences in nature. Moe Lemire is a licensed outdoor guide and a LNT master educator. We joined him at the epitome of a "high-use" spot -- Kaaterskill Falls -- to learn more about planning for and engaging in minimally-impactful Catskills excursions. Taylor embraces a minimal waste lifestyle and created his own clean up campaign called No Trace Left. Taylor has always loved the outdoors, having grown up spending half the year camping in Byron Bay. He attended agricultural boarding school where learnt about industry practices. Eventually Taylor recognised what was happening to animals was not right and decided to go vegan. Around the same time as going vegan, Taylor made friends with a Sea Shepherd volunteer and went to the Ocean Defence Tour. Taylor signed up as a volunteer and has helped at many festivals, ship tours and beach clean ups, even living on the Steve Erwin for four months while it was docked in Docklands. Being a Sea Shepherd volunteer led Taylor on many adventures and helped form many friendships. Having grown up near the beach, Taylor started picking up rubbish when he was young. Sea Shepherd helped Taylor understand why cleaning up debris was important and as a result, he started his own campaign called No Trace Left. The campaign encourages people to clean up any place you are at, whether it be beach, bush or your own backyard. Taylor enjoys snorkelling, is learning to free dive and uses his time underwater as an opportunity to collect rubbish. Taylor is passionate about living a minimal waste lifestyle as he understands how detrimental single use items are to the environment. He enjoys growing his own food, utilising a suburban backyard to create his own food. In 2020, Taylor quit his job and moved to Eden, New South Wales, where he set up a canvas wall tent next to the river and lived off grid. In this episode, Taylor shares tips on living a minimal waste lifestyle, interesting things he has found during clean ups as well as meeting his partner Amber on Vegan Singles of Melbourne. https://www.instagram.com/no_traceleft/ https://www.instagram.com/tylrdphotography/ https://www.instagram.com/that4wdphotoguy/

Ellie and Angela Green were like many mothers and daughters. Sometimes they argued. Ellie Green had just returned from Italy, after studying abroad. That's when the argument happens. Ellie stays with her boyfriend's family for a few days, and with no word from her mother, Ellie texts her father. Geoffrey Green's reply says Angela has been committed to a psychiatric hospital, and asks Ellie not to visit yet. Over the next three weeks, Geoffrey Green shares no information about Angela Green's treatment. Then, on July 16, Green shows up at the home Ellie shares with her boyfriend and his family with news that Angela has died of a stroke in the hospital. He asks Ellie not to tell Angela's family, who lives in New York. He will do that, just not yet. Months pass, no funeral service planned, no obituary published, and no one informed Angela's family of her passing. When they ask for a copy of Angela Green's death certificate. Ellie goes, herself, to the records office to get it, there isn't one... in the entire state of Kansas. On 30th September 1946, the Judges announce their verdicts. And the sentences to be imposed – death or imprisonment or freedom. But come the night of the executions, Hermann Goering has one last surprise. And now it's time for the verdicts: 11 will be hanged, 7 are given prison sentences and 3 are set free. On August 4th, 1992, 23-year-old Tara Breckenridge vanished without so much as a trace after leaving her job at Houston's The Men's Club. Besides a theory that her car was tampered with, Houston Detectives were ultimately unable to find a single solid lead, even after discovering that Tara had an admirer and that she and her boyfriend were having relationship trouble. After a 2007 DNA match between two other unsolved Houston cases, speculation that a serial rapist and killer was stalking women who worked at adult entertainment venues was the talk of the metropolis. If you have any information about the disappearance of Tara Breckenridge, please call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477. In January of 1985, siblings Michael and Pamela Mayfield were last seen getting into a vehicle willfully on their way home from school. The six-year-old and five-year-old, respectively, were never seen again. Efforts to locate the two children were relatively extensive. The Missing Children Milk Carton Program was new and gaining momentum fast, and the Mayfield Children were featured there, on nationwide news, and at the end of the third broadcast of the Adam Walsh television movie. No trace, however, of what happened to the two vibrant children was ever found. Formerly a translator for the US Navy, Callee was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector in 2017 following an episode of severe depression & alcoholism fueled by not living in alignment with her core values. Callee began hosting this free podcast in August 2018, as well as speaking at events and teaching educational workshops across the country, as part of her life mission to arm you with the knowledge & tools you need to spark positive change in your community. Marek Kamiński właśnie wrócił z wyprawy No Trace Expedition, podczas której elektrycznym Nissanem Leaf przejechał trasę z Warszawy do Tokio i z powrotem. Dlaczego bieguny były tak ważne w życiu Marka i w jaki sposób go ukształtowały?Gdzie spotkał najszczęśliwszych ludzi podczas swojej wyprawy?Czy spotkały go jakieś niebezpieczeństwa?Jak zniósł podróż organizm Marka?Co dała mu medytacja i podróżne rytuały?Czym będzie aplikacja Walk for Life oraz Walk for poles? Witajcie. Tym razem chciałbym zaprosić Was do wysłuchania rozmowy z Markiem Kamińskim, z którym spotkałem się kilka dni przed rozpoczęciem jego obecnej wyprawy do Japonii - No Trace Expedition. Mieliśmy możliwość porozmawiania w samochodzie, jadąc nad Wisłę, gdzie kręciliśmy film promujący No Trace (widoczny poniżej). Projekt No Trace Expedition to najnowszy podróżniczy projekt Marka Kamińskiego. Jego realizacja będzie miała miejsce w terminie maj-lipiec 2018 roku. This is my first real proper techno mix that I've recorded, and I'm pretty pleased with it, it's also the first time that I've tried harmonic mixing, where you mix tracks that are in the same key and shit, it sounds sick when it's done well. Have a listen and let me know what you think of it, there are some quality songs in this mix, like On the Line by Butch and No Trace by Solaris Heights, so, yeah, enjoy.
