Director Catherine Hardwicke's latest film is MAFIA MAMMA, and you probably know her as the director of TWILIGHT, LORDS OF DOGTOWN, or THIRTEEN. Julian Shah-Tayler, Aka The Singularity Frontman and multi-instrumentalist Julian Shah-Tayler (formerly of the band Whitey) childlike fascination with science, space and the big questions that trouble the human condition has fueled the creative output of his electronic rock and roll. “Everything burst out of the center of a supermassive black hole,” remarks Julian, “and we are going back there one day, so let's just enjoy it.” A Londoner relocated to LA, Julian's prolific catalog of music exceeds 300 songs, many of which have been featured in films and hit TV shows including Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Newsroom, while also turning up on broadcasts ranging from UK television's Popstar to NBC Sports. In 2014, Shah-Tayler won the “Golden Trailer” award for his work with Lana Del Ray on Disney's Maleficent trailer. He also performed one of his songs in front of Bill Clinton, Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese for the Unite For Humanity charity at the Oscars. Three of his songs were the “hits” for the focus band in the music movie Plush, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Lords Of Dogtown). "Lords of Dogtown" chronicles the rise of the California-based Z-Boys skate team in the 1970's. This skate team revolutionized skateboarding and changed the sport forever. But how did the real life Z-Boys feel about their portrayal in the film? We hear from former Z-Boys Nathan Pratt and Peggy Oki, as well as Victor Rasuk, who played Tony Alva in the film.

We continue our Sports series, in which we're looking at four films about sports directed by women, with Catherine Hardwicke's sophomore effort from 2005, ‘Lords of Dogtown.' Is it more than a biopic? Can we identify with the protagonists? And how's the skateboarding?

Dogtown and Z-Boys was a successful documentary when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, and did great for itself in its theatrical release afterward. That success spurred Stacy Peralta, the director of the film and one of the Z-boy skateboarders featured in the doc, to write a fictional telling of the story to be made as a feature film. That script went through several director's hands – David Fincher and Fred Durst, specifically – before landing with Catherine Hardwicke. She had had great success a few years earlier with her debut film Thirteen (which we talked about on the show here). So how does this hold up as her sophomore effort? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Sports series with Hardwicke's 2005 film Lords of Dogtown. We talk about skateboarding, biopics, and more as it relates to Lords of Dogtown. We both recount our own beginnings with skateboards. Were we ever any good? No. But certainly they were foundational memories for us. That gives us a jumping off point to get into this film as we look at how our three central characters – Jay, Tony, and Stacy – find their connection to skateboarding in the 70s and turn it into a sensation. How does the story work for us? It's very much a biopic. That's taken both for the bad and the good. It tells the story about interesting characters, but the beats feel very standard and expected. Is there something Hardwicke could've done or is this the best that could've come from Peralta's script? And that's another point we discuss – can a biopic script written by one of the characters in the story every really be more than gentle with its story? This is a common complaint with many musician biopics these days because the featured figure(s) is (are) alive and producing, writing, or giving their blessing to the project. Can Peralta be objective? It doesn't feel that way. Still, the film is full of energy. That certainly feels like something Hardwicke brings to her early films. And the actors bring it as well. Emile Hirsch, John Robinson, Victor Rasuk, Heath Ledger – so many faces in this film that warrant calling out. Because they do tremendous work throughout the film, whether their scripted parts shine or not. In the end, though, it's hard to separate what's great in this film with the problems we have with the script. As strong as the performances and direction are, the story always feels a bit flat. But it's still interesting and entertaining. So check it out. It's worth looking at, and you can check another off your bucket list. Then tune in to this week's show! A drought in 1970s Southern California has an unexpected side effect: as people empty their swimming pools, a group of teen surfers from the Dogtown area of Venice Beach move in with skateboards, and a new sport is born. Based on a true story, this film follows "Z-Boys" skate team members Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch), plus manager Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger), as their fearless "pool surfing" leads to fame, fortune -- and misfortune.   Nathan is BACK!  Whew!  Nathan brings us his "Surfer" genre with 2005's Biographical drama Lords of Dogtown.  The boys look back on their own experiences or non-experiences with surfing and skateboarding alike while reviewing this film.  The non-pragmatical elements of the film where we see the real life instances of these young men is often under appreciated when you think about the world of skating today. Catherine Hardwicke has achieved things most directors dream of and so very few accomplish. Her directorial debut, thirteen, garnered Oscar attention. Her adaptation of YA novel, Twilight, was a global blockbuster, and turned relative unknowns Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson into movie stars and household names. In 2005, between these films, she directed Lords of Dogtown; a gritty period drama that captures the birth of skateboarding as a sport, and the rebellious youth responsible for it.

This week, we look into a skateboarding icon, who many say invented the modern style of skating. He was just a kid, when he turned professional, but he certainly lived like an adult. An adult on the edge. He blew off commercials that he landed, and got into the LA punk rock scene, leading to his starting the ball rolling on a terrible murder of one man, and the near death of another. From there, his life continues to be a mess. He shoots cocaine, gets addicted to heroin, and makes terroristic threats. In, and out of prison, only to finally get out... and somehow be even weirder. Sean and Cody exchange the gently-waving bamboo forests of China for the sizzling streets of Southern California as they skate their way into this 2005 sports drama, based on a true story. In Lords of Dogtown, urban surfers Stacy (John Robinson), Jay (Emile Hirsch) and Tony (Victor Rasuk) are having a sad in 1975 coastal California as the waves are flat and blown-out. But then spaced-out surf shop owner Skip (Heath Ledger) gets some groovy new plastic skateboard wheels and sends the boys out to carve up concrete and hopefully drum up some business. All it takes is the Dogtown lads and a drought of Biblical proportions to launch a whole new professional sport and cultural craze. Environmental issues discussed include the history of droughts in Southern California, the psychology behind water conservation, the rise and fall of amusement park piers, the linkage of pop culture fads to climate change, and the design of swimming pools and backyard gardens.
