What if listening could change everything? This raw and captivating episode with guest Avi Kluger reveals how listening and the “space between” people can unlock new ways of seeing, feeling and transforming, and profoundly reshape how we lead, connect and grow.  A pioneering researcher in feedback and organizational behavior, Avi shares his personal journey to understand the power of listening and its potential to unlock unexpected depths in ourselves and others. Beyond theory, he shows us the real-world stakes of genuine human connection. In a world where productivity often overshadows humanity, this conversation is a call to reimagine our workspaces and relationships as places of connection, resilience and hope.  Watch this episode on YouTube. Key Topics 02:56 A Personal Journey: Growing Through Feedback Avi reflects on his early life and how the intense feedback he received from his father shaped his career and lifelong dedication to understanding the impact of feedback. 08:06 Limitations of Traditional Psychology and Statistics in Understanding Interpersonal Dynamics Avi discusses how his personal experiences led him to realize the limitations of traditional psychology and statistics in understanding interpersonal dynamics. 13:54 Creating Space for Change: Transformation Through Connection Heidi and Avi discuss the “invisible space” between people during meaningful interaction—a dynamic that invites growth, fosters transformation, and becomes a unique shared experience. 22:43 The “Togetherness” That Opens Us Avi introduces concepts like “positivity resonance” and “togetherness,” suggesting that growth occurs in a mutual space of connection, though such intimacy can be short-lived. 28:13 Feedforward vs. Feedback: A New Approach to Growth Avi describes “feedforward” as a process focused on growth and exploration rather than judgment, contrasting it with traditional feedback that often triggers defensiveness. 33:42 Listening as Developmental: The Art of Being Present Exploring methods for effective listening, Avi highlights the importance of being present and co-exploring with the other person, using specific questioning techniques to guide them in self-discovery. The conversation delves into how leaders who embraced their humanity, admitting uncertainty and fostering relationships, tended to succeed more. Drawing on a study and the insights from the book Embracing MESSY Leadership, Sean emphasizes the critical role of emotions in building trust, cultivating teamwork, and enhancing problem-solving capacities. He argues for a shift from controlling to exercising and utilizing emotions as strategic tools in leadership. The podcast also touches on the practical aspects of having difficult conversations and the importance of authenticity, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness in leadership roles. Sean concludes by underscoring the evolving understanding of leadership as beyond a series of tasks, advocating for emotional adeptness as a key leadership skill.Maybe the emotionless leader is not quite correct. MESSY Leadership came out of the pandemicThe leaders who were able to make personal connections, build relationships and show vulnerability did quite well. Exercise your emotion rather than controlling your emotions.Admit uncertaintyPose questions back to teamHigh level of self-awareness and self-confidenceEveryone wants to feel like they matter and they want to belong. You are part of this community. Don't we want to be authentic ourselves?Get communication cards.Leadership as a series of tasks and duties. Making people feel happy on a surface level. What's putting you in the box? The saying goes, "there's no tired like teacher tired." Teachers have exhausting schedules, and if you've ever time stamped a teacher day, you'll know that a teacher day is simply impossible to get through in a day. That feeling is not confined to the classroom. For those of us who have deeply held beliefs about what a student-centered school environment looks like, feels like and ignites learning like, education can be tough, whatever the role. I am humbled at how incremental the change is in the grand scheme of things. That humility makes me want to cry into a glass of milk. That humble place is also a place of remembering: “Define Your Why“, as author and educator Barbara Bray says. Either I believe that I can be an agent of change one small bite at a time, or I don't. The system needs to change, that's why I do what I do. And so, I'll dry my tears and start over. Because futility and hopelessness are just not an option. Care for a few ideas to help get you through? Read on. Encouragement from M.L. Brown – If laughter and strategies no longer work, rise up with this Medium article from an educator who decided that enough was enough. Equity Is More Than an Initiative

As the opposition to educational change grows, especially when talking about issues like learning gaps, teacher retention and inclusive environments, it's left to teachers in the trenches to help shape our future. That burden is immense, as seen in the droves of teachers experiencing burn-out and leaving the profession in years 1-5. The sector's lack of healthy, well supported and experienced teachers especially impacts our most vulnerable students, who often lack access to tenured, experienced teachers in the classroom. Equity initiatives have pushed the thinking on what it means to create safe, inclusive spaces in schools. However, the impact of these initiatives has not yet shown up in the form of academic gains. My answer to this is to use SmallBites to provide more support for the classroom, which is where equitable access has never really been equitable. Follow the podcast, connect with me on social media or host me for professional development on your campus. But mostly, listen and reflect on what 'equity in education' means. It's not another PD or training module. It's in how we show up for the students who need us most; and that starts with equitable access to good teaching. After all that time of living this way, she started to wonder: where were all the other people who lived like I did? Why didn't I know them? Why didn't I share my story? She started asking women in her community if they had chronic pain―only to find that I was surrounded by women also battling in silence. The more I spoke to people, the more she found common themes and experience—feeling silenced, experiencing humiliation and shame, struggling in relationships and work—proving that my stories of pain were not unique, and neither were her feelings of loneliness and seclusion.About the Guest:Francesca Grossman is a writer and writing instructor. The perennial debate over school choice is ramping up once again in state legislatures across the country. At least 11 states are considering or have passed legislation this year that would allow public funds to go toward private school tuition or homeschooling, according to EdWeek. But critics of school vouchers worry they divert money from public schools and that there's little to no oversight of how the money is spent. We take a look at which states have school choice programs, which students they work for, and who they leave behind. This conversation is part of our Remaking America collaboration with six public radio stations around the country. The series explores Americans' trust in institutions and the health of our democracy. Remaking America is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Want to support 1A? Reference Article: https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/whatever-happened-with-texas-anti-crt-law/2022/12It's been almost a year and a half since Texas's anti-CRT Legislation (HB3979 and SB3) has been in effect. What's it been like for educators? Has it had the desired effect? We read an article in Ed Week for reference. Curiously, despite the efforts of the author, Ileana Najarro, no conservative educators responded to follow-up questions but the article does include the voices of educators of color. Despite assurances from lawmakers, there remains confusion about what's out of bounds and also confusion about the consequences for violating the law. Stick with us as we continue to follow what's happening on the ground and explore this contentious issue.

There is arguably nothing more important to our future economy than the quality of our education system, and there is nothing more important to that than the quality and availability of teachers. But as anyone who's followed the news in the last couple of years knows, we are currently facing something of a crisis in the availability of qualified teachers. Here are some stats to put that crisis into perspective. According to EdWeek, there are over 3.1 million full-time equivalent teachers in public schools in the fall of 2022. But the National Education Association estimates that there is a shortage of roughly 300,000 teachers in public schools. So 10% of needed teachers are missing. We should have 3.4 million. But in fact, the number of full-time—not full-time equivalent teachers—is less than 3.1 million. That full-time equivalent number, includes aides and part-time teachers, so in fact, the missing 300,000—maybe more like missing 20% of full-time teachers.According to EdWeek, again, there are nearly 50 million students in public schools across the country. So using the teacher-to-student ratio of 50 million students and 3.4 million teachers, that works out to just under about 15 kids per teacher.  So missing 300,000 teachers works out to about four and a half million kids without sufficient teacher-led instruction. Without a major shift in education policy, there is not much that can change on the demand side that is in the school system to attract much more supply.  But our guest today,   Mallory Dwinal-Palisch, has come up with not one but two initiatives. One, to help increase the supply of trained teachers, and the other, to remove friction in the system so supply can better meet demand. She has an MBA, but also a Ph.D., and her dissertation was about labor supply and Teach for America. She's taught in the classroom and founded charter schools. She is the Chancellor of Reach University and the CEO of Craft Education Systems.Enjoy part 1 of the episode and Thanks for Being Curious!
