What if I told you, back in the 1300's there was an African King wealthier than Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Bill Gates combined. The King's name was Mansa Musa the ruler of then Mali Empire (modern-day countries of Senegal, southern Mauritania, Mali, northern Burkina Faso, western Niger, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, the Ivory Coast and northern Ghana). Mansa Musa controlled both the Gold and Salt and many other agricultural necessities during that time period all while growing his religious faith (Muslim faith) by growing mosques and an educational system throughout the continent of Africa. Many individuals may not know of Mansa Musa and his conquest because we've grown up learning mostly of European and Western conquerors, but Mansa Musa is someone that should be learned about throughout history as he set the stage for many African leaders today who have emulated his rule to power, as well as the wealth placed within Africa. Hosts of the Danso Pitch, Charles and Daniel break down Mansa Musa's emergence to power, and how many of us can learn from his successes and failures in today's world. For more episodes like today's visit us on Spotify, Apple and YouTube @dansopitch

Recently I came across a meme featuring Malian King Mansa Musa and how a person wanted to see a film about the man who was deemed to be one of the wealthiest men who ever lived who gave so much gold away in Egypt on his famous trek in Africa, that it caused the gold markets to crash.  I was first introduced to King Mansa Musa back in high school in the 80's when I saw one of those Budweiser marketing displays about the “Great Kings and Queens of Africa” in a bar that I was not to supposed to be in. I didn't think anything of it other than cool, a African King. It was later when one of the former podcasters I knew used an image of Mansa as his cover art. The show was in part about generating wealth. I then decided to look up information on King Musa and discovered he enslaved people and being a modern slavery abolitionist, I questioned the choice.  So coming across the meme armed with information I had learned previously, I simply stated a fact which was that his wealth was acquired from gold mines worked by victims of slavery and that his “flossing” or “showing off” his wealth, put a target on Africa which brought more and more Arabs and Europeans to Africa. Therefore in my own meme, in the description I wrote that I would like to see the film as well, but only if it is historically accurate. This resulted in some pushback which I will share on this podcast including the research by Balanta scholar by the name of Siphiwe Baleka who formerly identified as African American or Black.  Source Material: THE MALI KINGDOM AND MANSA MUSA WERE IMPERIALIST SLAVE TRADERS: REVISITING AFRICAN HISTORY FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE OPPRESSED

Rate this podcast: https://ratethispodcast.com/mpi There is a story of an African King who had a close friend with whom he grew up that had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and saying, "This is good!" One day the king and his friend were out hunting. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation, the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" To which the king replied - "No, this is not good!" and sent his friend to the deepest, darkest dungeon in the land. About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of. Cannibals captured him and took him to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake, and bound him to the stake. As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb. Being highly superstitious cannibals, they never ate anyone who was less than whole. They untied the king, they sent him on his way. As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for how he treated his friend. Immediately, he went to the jail to speak with his friend. "You were right," he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had just happened. "And so, I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this." "No," his friend replied, "This is good!" "What do you mean, 'This is good'? How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?" "If I had not been in jail, I would have been with you, and not here with you right now." It's up to you to decide what's "good" or what's "bad" in your life. Some people have the most difficult upbringing and end up being the most loving and successful people in the world. They took what was seen as "bad" and turned it into something "good". You get to do the same. Practice saying, "this is good!" regardless of the situation, and your brain will start to look for what is good. When you find it, nurture the good with your attention and watch as it outgrows your challenges. Mansa Musa, King of Gold; Richest man in history, was an African King!

My African cliche of the day is a perplexed look. In the 14th century, Mansa Musa had already understood the importance of education, and worked to make his empire a world reference point in education. Is it not terible that nowadays, African governments seem so little concerned about the quality of programs and schools? Many African capitals shine by the growing number of illegal private schools and poorly funded public schools, trapping smart but desperate students’s futures. I am really perplexed, and as says the quote in Cote d’ivoire, « guys, from Mansa Musa to our current leaders, where di dit go wrong ? Up to you to think about this, about your own clichés on education in Africa today, about the future of our brothers and sisters in Comoros, and elsewhere in our Africa continent. And I hope to see you tomorrow for new features of African histoiry and present.  Thank you

Neo-Nazi groups state King Tutankhamun had been "white," including YouTube videos with titles such as King Tutankhamun's Aryan DNA Results, while others angrily condemned the entire claim as a racist hoax. It played, once again, into the long-running battle over the king's racial origins. While some worried about a Jewish connection, the argument over whether the king was black or white has inflamed fanatics worldwide. Far-right groups have used blood group data to claim that the ancient Egyptians were in fact Nordic, while others have been desperate to define the pharaohs as black African. A 1970s show of Tutankhamun's treasures triggered demonstrations arguing that his African heritage was being denied, while the blockbusting 2005 tour was hit by protests in Los Angeles, when demonstrators argued that the reconstruction of the king's face built from CT scan data was not sufficiently "black."
